TOPIC- THE FAKEER OF JUNGHEERA AS A
METRICAL TALE
SUBMITTED TO- SMT. S.B. GARDI DEPARTMENT
OF ENGLISH & M.K. BHAVNAGAR UNIVERSITY
2. Derozio’s metrical poem,The Fakeer of Jungheera
and his prose writings reveal his concept of
aesthetics and ideas of syncretistic, democratic
culture within early colonialism.
The poem is written in an iambic, anapestic,
trochaic and dactylic metres to suit the different
rhythms ranging from the normal spoken voice and
slow description to the racy battles and the chant of
priests and women.
3. A single reading of this poem reveals its
romantic nature.
Derozio in the starting lines is describing the
natural beauty for example small angels are
moving slowly on the flowers, in the air or wind,
on grass as the breeze passes.
Canto first reminds us of the love poems
during the Elizabethan age.
4. In the starting lines, it is clearly indicated that Derozio must
have come under influence of Elizabethan poets.
Derozio’s style and choice of words which is called Diction show
how successfully Derozio has embedded a set of poetic
technique from those poets. These lines are-
Affection are not made for merchandise-
What will ye give in barter for the heart?
Has this world wealth enough to buy the store of hopes, and feelings,
which are linked forever
with woman’s soul?
5. Derozio changes patterns according to the varying moods of
the poem. Sometimes the music is harsh and sometimes it is
very sweet.
We can say that it is not just his choice of words but also his
care in organizing these words in an order, which produces
the same mood as is produced by the words. This quality
makes him a true poet.
Personification is used by Derozio in the words “Viewless
Winds”.
6. Derozio’s poems are easy to understand and can be set to
music too as there are rhymes and rhythms.
“Chorus of Brahmins” states out because of musicality. No
one can fail to hear how the mood is created through the
repetition of sounds.
In hymn to the sun, the rhyme scheme is ABAB. We can say
that poem has been made a fine collage by Derozio of
thoughts, music, expression, cultural belief and indelible
expressions.
7. Derozio uses simile in this poem. Beginning of the day is
compared with the awakening of the child as his smile
brings heavenly feeling likewise the morning is a time when
everything is new.
That feeling is immortal. Sun is also used as an simile. Sun
is compared to a golden urn.
8. CONCLUSION
Finally we may conclude that through the use of
images and rhymes, Derozio has written this
beautiful poem.Through this poem he uses the
similes, metaphor and rhyme scheme. Here
Derozio also narrates beautiful description of
nature and Fakeer and Nuleeni’s life.
