Describe main features of mauryan administration
Here are some main features of mauryan administration-
● Monarchical System: The Mauryan Empire was a monarchy with a
hereditary succession system. The ruler, often known as the emperor,
held the highest authority and played a central role in decision-making.
● Chandragupta Maurya’s Establishment: Chandragupta Maurya, the
founder of the Mauryan Empire, established a strong centralized rule.
He overthrew the Nanda dynasty to establish the Mauryan rule, marking
the beginning of a new political era.
● Ashoka’s Rule and Governance: Ashoka, one of the most well-known
Mauryan emperors, contributed significantly to the polity. His rule saw
the expansion of the empire and the implementation of policies based
on moral and ethical principles, known as Ashoka’s Dhamma.
● Administrative Divisions: The empire was divided into provinces, each
headed by a governor. This administrative division helped in efficient
governance and ensured that the emperor’s authority reached all
corners of the vast empire.
● Royal Court and Advisors: The emperor had a council of ministers and
advisors who assisted in decision-making. The Arthashastra, attributed
to Chanakya, served as a guide for governance, providing insights into
statecraft, military strategy, and economic policies.
● Military Influence: The Mauryan polity placed significant importance
on a strong military. The emperor maintained a well-organized army to
defend the empire, expand its territories, and maintain internal order.
● Law and Justice: The empire had a structured legal system to maintain
law and order. Local courts dispensed justice, and the emperor served
as the highest appellate authority. The legal framework aimed to
ensure fairness and justice for all citizens.
● Diplomacy and Alliances: The Mauryan rulers engaged in diplomatic
efforts to establish alliances and maintain stability in the region. This
helped in preventing external threats and promoting trade and cultural
exchange.
● Propagation of Dhamma: Ashoka’s adoption and promotion of
Dhamma as a guiding principle for governance influenced the polity.
Dhammabemphasized moral values, tolerance, and compassion,
aiming to create a just and humane society.
