4. BACKGROUND:ISSUES
Solid waste is increasing:
• increasing by 500 thousand tons per year in UB [2]
• increased from 139 thousand tons in 2011 to 990 thousand tons in 2013 in UB [1].
But only 3.2-6.4% of this waste is being re-used/recycled in UB [1].
• MNT 7 billion in 2011 was spent to build a waste recycling facility[1], but was not realized.
• USD 3.5 million was spent to build waste separation and recycling facility by KOICA’s in Dec
2011 at Narangiin enger disposal site [4], but is not operational.
No proper waste paper recycling
• The existing toilet paper companies do not meet requirements (use old, inefficient
technologies).
• Waste paper represents 41% of household waste, glass or glass products 37% and plastics
10% [2].
• But only 0.2% of waste paper has been re-used as of 2013.
