3. Introduction
Today’s society is known as Information Society. Information is all around us
and we need to gather it and manipulate it to get the maximum out of it. Open
access is a platform where any information is available free of cost.
4. What is open access?
Open access is a term used to describe a publishing model where the researcher
makes his/her publication freely available online, thereby eliminating
subscription, legal or financial barriers.
5. What is open access journal?
•Open access journals are scholarly journals which can be read online without
any forms of barriers like legal, financial or technical other than being
accessible through internet.
•There are two types of open access journals
Fee based open access journals: Here either the author or someone on behalf of him
has to pay to the publishing house.
No fee based open access journals: Here no one has to pay the fees.
6. History
•Most early open access journals were in 1990’s founded by individual scholars
and used as a business model based on voluntary works in spirit to open source
development of software.
•In the mid- and late- 1990’s open access journals were new electronic-only
journals founded by academics.
•From 2002 there have been increase in number of journals and articles

♔Many are publicly funded research.
♔“Free for readers, not free for producers” as said in Budapest Open Access
Initiative.

12. Conclusion
Every coin has two faces, in the same way, open access has its different faces. It
is upon us to use or misuse the information and to provide authenticity to the
information given through open access.
