Abstract
The National Society of Black Engineers takes engineering to a whole new level within the
African American and minority community. The National Society of Black Engineers also
known as NSBE has created a design for success with a road map to excellence. NSBE is
bringing back the tradition of building and creating within the minority community. This
initiative of knowledge learning by NSBE has set the bar for what is to be expected within the
African American and minority community for the present and future learning engineer.
Introduction
The National Society of Black Engineers is not an organization that discriminates against any
member, fellow, or student learner. NSBE which was founded in 1975 was attempting to open
the doors to African Americans with the opportunity to do what is natural to them and that is to
build and create. NSBE has developed an assortment of opportunities for all age, groups, and
genders to surpass and do well within life. NSBE diversity and opportunity within the inner
cities has poured hope back into children by allowing them to do what they love, and teaching
them that earning a degree in any aspect of engineering is doable along with showing them the
benefits of earning an engineering degree.
NSBE teaches students the importance of working teams for particular projects to ensure
success along with sponsorship. “Harvard Business Essentials stated, “Whether a project is
formed by a manager or by a group of staff members, it must have a sponsor. The sponsor
authorizes the project” (HBE, 2004). Sponsorship is extremely important within any studies
because this means that someone or some organization believed in that business or students
development. NSBE was generally formed to help black engineers to succeed and do well
within their careers and life endeavors. “The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), was
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 3
founded in 1975 at Purdue University located in West Lafayette, Indiana by six undergraduates
and a faculty advisor. It is one of the largest student-run organizations in the United States, with
core activities centered on improving the recruitment and retention of Black and other minority
engineers, in both academe and industry. NSBE is an organization that provides opportunities
for personal and professional success, and remains unmatched by any other organization to date”
(Wikipedia, 2015). Within this essay discussion I will intricate on the organizational diversity of
NSBE and how they are such a help within diverse communities when it comes to education,
development, careers, sponsorship for the youth, college students, and the job seekers alike. The
topic discussion will be on; Relevant Historical Information, Industry Information, Sales Figures,
Mission Product, Location, Customer, Audience Base, Diversity within NSBE Leadership and
Commitment, NSBE Reputation, Policies, Procedures, Practices, and Diversity, and Strategy to
Improve NSBE Performance. This informative essay discussion will give more of a synopsis of
whom NSBE is as not for profit organization and a for profit business.
Thesis Statement
The combined missions of NSBE clearly shows that NSBE is for the science, technology,
engineering, and math aspects of engineering and by implementing this knowledge within
children at an early age will give each child a better outlook within life and their education
influences.

Relevant Historical Information
Anthony Harris whom was an undergraduate at Perdue University had become aware of the
attrition rate by minorities while obtaining their college education. The ideal came to life in
1971 and formed in 1975 to help Black engineers succeed within their educational endeavors and
career placements. “There was quite a bit of initial resistance, but finally a fledgling Black
Society of Engineers (BSE) was founded in 1975 by John Logan, Edward Coleman, George
Smith, Stanley Kirtley, Brian Harris, and Anthony Harris (nicknamed ‘The Chicago Six’), along
with their designated faculty advisor, Arthur Bond. Anthony Harris proposed that the group
change its name to The Society of Black Engineers (SBE) in 1976, which was changed again in
2000 to the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)” (Wikipedia, 2015). NSBE which
personified the attributes of never giving up was evident within these six men from Chicago
whom blazed a trail to help other Black Engineers who may have been weary while in school or
who did not know what to do next once they were completed with their collegiate studies. Hilary
Clinton stated within her book ‘Leadership Secrets of Hillary Clinton,’
“We all get discouraged at some point in our lives. We reach a point
when we wonder if it wouldn’t be easier to just give up. We begin to
doubt our own abilities and lose faith in others. The “thrill of victory”
is no longer so sweet, and the “agony of defeat” doesn’t seem so bad.
Our energy is drained, and ‘we’ve stopped having fun. This is when
you need to dig deep inside yourself and find that well of determination
and inner strength that will help you face your fears, counter the ensuing
complacency, and keep you committed to reaching your goals” (Shambaugh, 2010).
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 5
When these men created NSBE it was evident that they were before their time when it
came to organizational development that would make a ground breaking-breakthrough
for the African American community within the genre of engineering and development.
The strength of the visionary came out through the vision, flexibility, courage, and
simplicity to just do.
Industry Information
Within engineering you have such a broad list of diverse forms of engineering from
Aeronautical, Biomedical, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Sustainability Design, Electrical and
Electronics, Systems, Biomechanical, Photonics, Computer Software, Computer hardware,
Nuclear, Mineral, Agricultural, and many more to choose from. Then from this list you have sub
groups to choose from for instance within the Biomedical engineering classification you have:
Engineering Associate, Software Engineer, Executive Administrative Assistant so if you choose
to go into the field of engineering you have many different options to choose from. The entire
engineering career and development is where NSBE becomes a big influence to the young
minority students, college grads, and careers seekers alike all from diverse populations and
classes. They help direct engineers into the correct direction and give them the needed support
that is required by peers. This is something like a safety net to ensure success once the education
is completed. Engineers can earn $55,000 per year starting to $158,980 or more ending.
Engineers are diverse within nationalities and this is a good thing because within diverse
countries diverse cultures are needed to ensure the right to cross bodies of water. NSBE made
the correct choice to develop an organization to help pull minorities out of the shadows of
poverty and bring light into their lives. By NSBE teaching students about engineering, and how
it could financially, and educationally change their lives for the betterment of community, and
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 6
family. “According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1.4 million engineers were employed
in the United States in 2004. This federal agency predicted that over the period between 2004
and 2014, overall job growth for engineers will increase by only 9 to 17 percent. Job
opportunities are expected to remain favorable for this profession because the number of
graduating students from engineering programs should be about equal to the number of job
openings expected to become available” (McDavid, 2007). NSBE has collaborated with top
engineering firms and companies to ensure proper placement of their interns and college
students.
Sales Figures
Since 2013 to date NSBE has obtained several grants from diverse corporations and other
501c organizations. Because NSBE is a 501c not for profit organization their total expenses and
revenue are low making the total revenue $5,900 and the expenses are $16,616, but the grant
funding is astounding by all means in the millions which balances out the organization and puts
them on the stock market due to the grand amount of investor relations. The chart below taken
from the NSBE scholarship page shows the amount of funding that they obtain from external
sources and internal sources for students.

stakeholders and sponsors are major corporation whom are investing millions within NSBE and
the students of NSBE. “A sound stakeholder communications system is also important. These
people will want continuous updates on project status and progress” (HBE, 2004). It is
extremely important that NSBE continue to reach out to corporations like GE electric to ensure
proper placement of students for fellow programs and other organizations to ensure grants and
funds are available to students who are in need of financial assistance with college. According to
the Harvard Business Review “Stakeholders will generally want regular updates and status
reports, consult with them to see how much information they’d like and in what format (2004).

Mission
The overall mission of NSBE is to help youth, developers, colleges, and career seekers bridge
the gap through opportunity which will allow students and scholars to link up with corporations,
scholarship funding, and other venture opportunities for the growth. NSBE mission statement is
quoted as such: NSBE’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black
Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the
community” (NSBE, 2015). The National Society of Black Engineers also has a program for
elementary and middle school students called ‘Seek’ this Saturday and Summer program is to
help youth understand the fundamentals of robotics and computer science within a classroom
setting. The mission statement of seek is stated as “To increase elementary school students’
aptitude in math and science and their interest in pursuing STEM (science, technology,
engineering, math) career fields, by having them engage in interactive, team-based engineering
projects” (NSBE Seek, 2015). The combined missions of NSBE clearly shows that NSBE is for
the science, technology, engineering, and math aspects of engineering by implementing this
knowledge within children at an early age will give each child a better outlook within life, and
their education influences. I would have to say this is a form of molding of a child’s mind, and
developing them into future engineers and developers.
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 10
Product
The National Society of Black Engineers offers products and services. The products that they
currently sale are clothing which can be purchased online at http://nsbestore.org/collections/all
for a reasonable price. These T-Shirts, jackets, and hats that are showcased produce funds that
go back into NSBE’s 501c fund. The services NSBE offers is through their mentor programs,
scholarship programs, fellows, and Seek summer youth programs. These training services help
develop future engineers in the art of communication, education, grooming, and career
development. All these products and services are available to every aspect of race, religion,
color, and culture. NSBE does not discriminate in any shape form or fashion when it comes to
their future engineers. Harvey Mackey stated in his book” The Mackay MBA of Selling in the
Real World. “Wouldn’t you love to have the energy and optimism of a little kid? There is
nothing you couldn’t do or learn or be” (Holtz, 2011). For these engineers and teachers to come
down to the level of children by reaching them, to teach them is phenomenal by all means this
train of thinking ensures success for our youth.
Location
Every locations of NSBE is ordinarily within major cities they also have programs in the
suburbs of major Cities. In the Bay Area of California NSBE currently has a location in Oakland
and Pittsburg, California. These chapters are recognized as RVI NSBE Jr. Chapters, RVI
Collegiate Chapters, and RVI Professional Chapters. Each NSBE location around the world has
influenced other countries to get involved and open associate chapters for their community.
NSBE has chapters in: Europe, The Middle East, Canada, Africa, West Canada, Baha Mexico,
Asia, South Pacific, Australia, Mexico, Central America, South Africa, Dominican Republic and
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 11
the list goes on and on, and chapters are still opening up daily to ensure the development of the
engineer. The purpose of these charters are for the people whom are called engineers to be
industrious, build and create civilizations.
The Objective and Prospective
Like all major companies, organizations, and businesses there must be an objective and
prospective to flourish. “Set your objectives. Like all promotional activity, decide what you
want to accomplish. The objective of a corporation or organization is usually to convey to
customers that you are in business to stay. NSBE’s objective is to be diverse and cross many
bodies of water to develop the endeavors of engineers all over the world. The Engineers have
somewhat of the same ideology and philosophy of the Moors (Mohr) to be industrious and build
civilizations. Setting the prospective is what The National Society of Black Engineer are doing.
Not by shrinking down the skills and talents of each individual, but allowing student learners and
professionals to study, set an agenda, a plan, and develop a Master plan for success. The Free
Online Dictionary referred to the perspective as, “A mental view or outlook, an understanding
of how aspects of a subject relate to each other and to the whole, Subjective evaluation of
relative significance; a point of view, and The ability to perceive things in their actual
interrelations or comparative importance (2015). NSBE is setting the perspective
by staying focused on their agenda and plan to create engineers for the future. By developing in
rural areas and rural countries along with educating students and professionals within cities has
created a new generation of learners.
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 12
Customer
The audience and customer are actually student learners and professionals. They are not just
customers but they are members as well. The memberships are classified as such:
 NSBE Jr. – Pre-college: Grades 6-12 -only $5 per year!
 Collegiate – Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible -only $15 per year!
 Professional – Includes technical professional and graduate students -only $50 per year!
 Lifetime – Make the ULTIMATE commitment to NSBE. Dare to SOAR in RARE AIR…
 International - For individuals who reside outside of the U.S. and Canada. International
The customers could also be consider the corporations that invest into NSBE like GE Electric,
Ford, and all other corporations that invest and funds NSBE and their associate chapters.
Audience Base
The audience base is the investor whom funds the programs the NSBE develops. The
audience is also the people and the parent partners that send their children to NSBE for training
programs that want to see their children grown, learn, and shine. What The National Society of
Black Engineers has done is created a community of engineers, developers, and doctors that
brings the audience in through proven success factors and teaching. “Another very powerful way
to build client relationships and generate referrals is to bring your prospects and clients together”
(Jantsch, 2006). Since NSBE knows the diverse population of people per country they know
how to target the correct audience, cliental, and customer base. Many of their customers also
come from the collegiate community along with major corporation that are on the forefront of
society to date. Josh Jantsch the author of ‘Duct Tape Marking’ also went on to state, “I think a
couple of things are at work here. When you bring a group of your customers together, they can
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 13
indeed see firsthand that others, very much like them, put their trust in you” (2006). Showcasing
and window shopping are ideal right now for NSBE and their student/professionals. For certain
NSBE’s investments will continue to flow in by them being doers, being diverse in culture, and
through excellent collaborations.
Leadership and Commitment
Leadership means everything when it comes to major corporation, major building, and
development. If you want to build an empire you must always build it with those who took the
time and effort to obtain the needed education, book knowledge, and practical application
through trial and error to success. These people who have built companies rather they be big or
small can tell you what works and does not work. The correct leadership usually demonstrates
this in every way possible. Breaking through the glass ceil in 1975 is what NSBE did for the
African American Community and minorities of diverse populations all over the world. This
should be the norm within management and leadership. Leaders in any major infrastructure need
to stay committed whether they be a CEO, CFO, CCO and COO of the organization. NSBE has
made it possible for minorities and woman alike to break through the class ceiling through
education, training, and development of their craft. “A review of corporate middle management
reveals that the numbers of women and minorities in managerial positions are at an all-time high.
This is a breakthrough worthy of celebrating” (Nigro, 2003). For NSBE whom made a brilliant
move by bringing on a woman by the name of Sossena Wood as the Executive Board of the
National Society Of Black Engineers. By employing her as the new Executive Board member
this made it evident to women and minorities alike that the door to become an engineer is
available more now than ever.
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 14
NSBE Reputation
The National Society of Black Engineers has an awesome reputation and proven track
record for success. By taking children whom come from all walks of life; some from poverty,
and giving them a better way of living through education and mentoring them is pure genius.
This fundamental way of thinking, teaching, and learning is how you teach a child to become
self-sufficient through education, and by giving them the tools they need to succeed. Engineers
and doctors are at the top of the food chain within society and education by all means. This is
the plan of NSBE is to allow students and professionals the chance, and opportunity to rise and
shine which is currently in full force. Johnson & Blanchard of the ‘One Minute Manager’ stated,
“The best minute I spend is the one I invest in people” (Blanchard and Johnson, 1981). NSBE
reputation to invest in the futures of college students and youth is ideal thinking to ensure that
engineers have an outlet, brother/sisterhood, and group of people whom have the same mind
setting and philosophy of excellence. The reputation of NSBE stands above many other
engineering association programs and groups when it comes to giving back to the community
and country.
Policies, Procedures, Practices, and Diversity
The National Society of Black Engineers are governed by: Policies and procedure, alumni
operations guidelines, bylaws, and privacy policies. “All organizations should have a set of
bylaws which specifies: how the organization is governed, what its object or purpose is, how
someone can become a member, the duties and obligations of members, how officers are elected,
and each officer's duties, how many business meetings there are in a year, the names of the
standing committees, the name of the parliamentary authority, and how the bylaws are amended”
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 15
(WDYBS, 1995). The privacy policies just inform the client, student, customer, and investor
that he or she’s information will be guard from 3rd parties and also fraudulent interactions. The
Alumni Operations Guidelines enforce measurements and rules to all alumni on behavior,
conduct, dues, and membership. They also illustrated the function of the elected board and their
duties as a board member. The bylaws of NSBE follow under the Robert Rules of Order for
corporation and are formatted in that particular order of doing business as a corporation. NSBE
uses the parliamentary law to conduct business and business meetings which is the best way
because it bring upon order. "The application of parliamentary law is the best method yet
devised to enable assemblies of any size, with due regard for every member’s opinion, to arrive
at the general will on the maximum number of questions of varying complexity in a minimum
amount of time and under all kinds of internal climate ranging from total harmony to hardened or
impassioned division of opinion” (Robert Rules, 2013).
NSBE is a national organization with national delegates this involves dealing with diverse
populations and cultures therefore they do not discriminate against people regardless of race,
nationality, ethnicity, or gender. From the look of things NSBE has a very set agenda and
strategy to improve their collaborations with corporations and joint ventures within schools and
communities. The rules regulations, bylaws, and policies give a written foundation on what is to
be expected from the members to exemplify excellent within the organization. “In 2015, we will
build our legacy - one black engineer at a time" this was stated at the National Convention for
NSBE in Anaheim California. The phrase black does not exclude Latinos, Asians, or any other
minority group from becoming a member, but NSBE always works on the home front within
regards to their mission statement. NSBE does not discriminate against anyone with disabilities
as long as they are teachable.
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 16
Summary
From researching and collecting information in regards to The National Society of Black
Engineers it is evident that they are on the move and rising to newer heights due to their diverse
population of engineers, mentoring programs, and venture within other countries. NSBE has
increased their opportunities for minorities and collaborated with major corporation to ensure
longevity and to also ensure that future sustainable is accessible.
Conclusion
There are many other engineering groups within the United States like;
American Engineering Group (AEG), MSIDC-Engineering Groups, Professional Engineering
Groups, Inc., American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and many more engineering
associations and organizations. For NSBE it is clearly evident that they are making moves by
obtain superb investors and funding for their programs like Seek that truly believes that you must
invest in your youth. The National Society of Black Engineers stated, "We are excited about the
continued growth and sustainability of the program," said NSBE Executive Director Karl W.
Reid, Ed.D. "We're proud to provide this educational opportunity to 4,500 students this year,
many of whom may not have engaged in this kind of learning otherwise” (NSBE, 2015). The
opportunities that these children and scholars are obtaining are massive which I call a once in a
life time chance to explore the development of engineering through, math and robotics. For
college grads internships are available for students whom are seeking advancement within their
career in the line of engineer along with the chance to receive a scholarship from a major
corporation. As long as NSBE keep all the channels of opportunity open and exceptional
collaboration at hand then NSBE should always do well. Unless they turned a student or child
ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 17
learner away which should never happen. The National Society of Black Engineers should
never let down their guard of excellence ever.
With senior board members whom prepare an annual staff development plan linked to the
organization’s strategic plan it should show in detail how NSBE will for the next 20 years
continue to implement programs along with a doable marketing plan that will outsource to more
corporations, and businesses that are willing to invest in the brand of NSBE and their student
members. NSBE should always have a six month goal appraisal meeting in regards to the entire
infrastructure, and within this meeting it would be in the best interest for them to have a set
agenda, list of goals that can be meet, and appraisal evaluation in regards to the quality of the
organization (how can they improve). NSBE from here on out should be nothing but
extraordinary, exceptional, and astonishing in all they do and deliver, and by all means thus far
The National Society of Black Engineers is impressive!

The National Society of Black Engineers-NSBE-

  • 1. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 1 Organizational Diversity The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) By: Tunisia I.E. Al-Salahuddin Leading Diverse Teams-ORG 555-1 University of Colorado State Global-Campus Wednesday, May 20, 2015
  • 2. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 2 Abstract The National Society of Black Engineers takes engineering to a whole new level within the African American and minority community. The National Society of Black Engineers also known as NSBE has created a design for success with a road map to excellence. NSBE is bringing back the tradition of building and creating within the minority community. This initiative of knowledge learning by NSBE has set the bar for what is to be expected within the African American and minority community for the present and future learning engineer. Introduction The National Society of Black Engineers is not an organization that discriminates against any member, fellow, or student learner. NSBE which was founded in 1975 was attempting to open the doors to African Americans with the opportunity to do what is natural to them and that is to build and create. NSBE has developed an assortment of opportunities for all age, groups, and genders to surpass and do well within life. NSBE diversity and opportunity within the inner cities has poured hope back into children by allowing them to do what they love, and teaching them that earning a degree in any aspect of engineering is doable along with showing them the benefits of earning an engineering degree. NSBE teaches students the importance of working teams for particular projects to ensure success along with sponsorship. “Harvard Business Essentials stated, “Whether a project is formed by a manager or by a group of staff members, it must have a sponsor. The sponsor authorizes the project” (HBE, 2004). Sponsorship is extremely important within any studies because this means that someone or some organization believed in that business or students development. NSBE was generally formed to help black engineers to succeed and do well within their careers and life endeavors. “The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), was
  • 3. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 3 founded in 1975 at Purdue University located in West Lafayette, Indiana by six undergraduates and a faculty advisor. It is one of the largest student-run organizations in the United States, with core activities centered on improving the recruitment and retention of Black and other minority engineers, in both academe and industry. NSBE is an organization that provides opportunities for personal and professional success, and remains unmatched by any other organization to date” (Wikipedia, 2015). Within this essay discussion I will intricate on the organizational diversity of NSBE and how they are such a help within diverse communities when it comes to education, development, careers, sponsorship for the youth, college students, and the job seekers alike. The topic discussion will be on; Relevant Historical Information, Industry Information, Sales Figures, Mission Product, Location, Customer, Audience Base, Diversity within NSBE Leadership and Commitment, NSBE Reputation, Policies, Procedures, Practices, and Diversity, and Strategy to Improve NSBE Performance. This informative essay discussion will give more of a synopsis of whom NSBE is as not for profit organization and a for profit business. Thesis Statement The combined missions of NSBE clearly shows that NSBE is for the science, technology, engineering, and math aspects of engineering and by implementing this knowledge within children at an early age will give each child a better outlook within life and their education influences.
  • 4. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 4 Organizational Diversity Relevant Historical Information Anthony Harris whom was an undergraduate at Perdue University had become aware of the attrition rate by minorities while obtaining their college education. The ideal came to life in 1971 and formed in 1975 to help Black engineers succeed within their educational endeavors and career placements. “There was quite a bit of initial resistance, but finally a fledgling Black Society of Engineers (BSE) was founded in 1975 by John Logan, Edward Coleman, George Smith, Stanley Kirtley, Brian Harris, and Anthony Harris (nicknamed ‘The Chicago Six’), along with their designated faculty advisor, Arthur Bond. Anthony Harris proposed that the group change its name to The Society of Black Engineers (SBE) in 1976, which was changed again in 2000 to the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)” (Wikipedia, 2015). NSBE which personified the attributes of never giving up was evident within these six men from Chicago whom blazed a trail to help other Black Engineers who may have been weary while in school or who did not know what to do next once they were completed with their collegiate studies. Hilary Clinton stated within her book ‘Leadership Secrets of Hillary Clinton,’ “We all get discouraged at some point in our lives. We reach a point when we wonder if it wouldn’t be easier to just give up. We begin to doubt our own abilities and lose faith in others. The “thrill of victory” is no longer so sweet, and the “agony of defeat” doesn’t seem so bad. Our energy is drained, and ‘we’ve stopped having fun. This is when you need to dig deep inside yourself and find that well of determination and inner strength that will help you face your fears, counter the ensuing complacency, and keep you committed to reaching your goals” (Shambaugh, 2010).
  • 5. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 5 When these men created NSBE it was evident that they were before their time when it came to organizational development that would make a ground breaking-breakthrough for the African American community within the genre of engineering and development. The strength of the visionary came out through the vision, flexibility, courage, and simplicity to just do. Industry Information Within engineering you have such a broad list of diverse forms of engineering from Aeronautical, Biomedical, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Sustainability Design, Electrical and Electronics, Systems, Biomechanical, Photonics, Computer Software, Computer hardware, Nuclear, Mineral, Agricultural, and many more to choose from. Then from this list you have sub groups to choose from for instance within the Biomedical engineering classification you have: Engineering Associate, Software Engineer, Executive Administrative Assistant so if you choose to go into the field of engineering you have many different options to choose from. The entire engineering career and development is where NSBE becomes a big influence to the young minority students, college grads, and careers seekers alike all from diverse populations and classes. They help direct engineers into the correct direction and give them the needed support that is required by peers. This is something like a safety net to ensure success once the education is completed. Engineers can earn $55,000 per year starting to $158,980 or more ending. Engineers are diverse within nationalities and this is a good thing because within diverse countries diverse cultures are needed to ensure the right to cross bodies of water. NSBE made the correct choice to develop an organization to help pull minorities out of the shadows of poverty and bring light into their lives. By NSBE teaching students about engineering, and how it could financially, and educationally change their lives for the betterment of community, and

This federal agency predicted that over the period between 2004 and 2014, overall job growth for engineers will increase by only 9 to 17 percent. Job opportunities are expected to remain favorable for this profession because the number of graduating students from engineering programs should be about equal to the number of job openings expected to become available” (McDavid, 2007). NSBE has collaborated with top engineering firms and companies to ensure proper placement of their interns and college students. Sales Figures Since 2013 to date NSBE has obtained several grants from diverse corporations and other 501c organizations. Because NSBE is a 501c not for profit organization their total expenses and revenue are low making the total revenue $5,900 and the expenses are $16,616, but the grant funding is astounding by all means in the millions which balances out the organization and puts them on the stock market due to the grand amount of investor relations. The chart below taken from the NSBE scholarship page shows the amount of funding that they obtain from external sources and internal sources for students. These people will want continuous updates on project status and progress” (HBE, 2004). It is extremely important that NSBE continue to reach out to corporations like GE electric to ensure proper placement of students for fellow programs and other organizations to ensure grants and funds are available to students who are in need of financial assistance with college. According to the Harvard Business Review “Stakeholders will generally want regular updates and status reports, consult with them to see how much information they’d like and in what format (2004).

  • 9. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 9 Mission The overall mission of NSBE is to help youth, developers, colleges, and career seekers bridge the gap through opportunity which will allow students and scholars to link up with corporations, scholarship funding, and other venture opportunities for the growth. NSBE mission statement is quoted as such: NSBE’s mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community” (NSBE, 2015). The National Society of Black Engineers also has a program for elementary and middle school students called ‘Seek’ this Saturday and Summer program is to help youth understand the fundamentals of robotics and computer science within a classroom setting. The mission statement of seek is stated as “To increase elementary school students’ aptitude in math and science and their interest in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) career fields, by having them engage in interactive, team-based engineering projects” (NSBE Seek, 2015). The combined missions of NSBE clearly shows that NSBE is for the science, technology, engineering, and math aspects of engineering by implementing this knowledge within children at an early age will give each child a better outlook within life, and their education influences. I would have to say this is a form of molding of a child’s mind, and developing them into future engineers and developers.
  • 10. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 10 Product The National Society of Black Engineers offers products and services. The products that they currently sale are clothing which can be purchased online at http://nsbestore.org/collections/all for a reasonable price. These T-Shirts, jackets, and hats that are showcased produce funds that go back into NSBE’s 501c fund. The services NSBE offers is through their mentor programs, scholarship programs, fellows, and Seek summer youth programs. These training services help develop future engineers in the art of communication, education, grooming, and career development. All these products and services are available to every aspect of race, religion, color, and culture. NSBE does not discriminate in any shape form or fashion when it comes to their future engineers. Harvey Mackey stated in his book” The Mackay MBA of Selling in the Real World. “Wouldn’t you love to have the energy and optimism of a little kid? There is nothing you couldn’t do or learn or be” (Holtz, 2011). For these engineers and teachers to come down to the level of children by reaching them, to teach them is phenomenal by all means this train of thinking ensures success for our youth. Location Every locations of NSBE is ordinarily within major cities they also have programs in the suburbs of major Cities. In the Bay Area of California NSBE currently has a location in Oakland and Pittsburg, California. These chapters are recognized as RVI NSBE Jr. Chapters, RVI Collegiate Chapters, and RVI Professional Chapters. Each NSBE location around the world has influenced other countries to get involved and open associate chapters for their community. NSBE has chapters in: Europe, The Middle East, Canada, Africa, West Canada, Baha Mexico, Asia, South Pacific, Australia, Mexico, Central America, South Africa, Dominican Republic and
  • 11. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 11 the list goes on and on, and chapters are still opening up daily to ensure the development of the engineer. The purpose of these charters are for the people whom are called engineers to be industrious, build and create civilizations. The Objective and Prospective Like all major companies, organizations, and businesses there must be an objective and prospective to flourish. “Set your objectives. Like all promotional activity, decide what you want to accomplish. The objective of a corporation or organization is usually to convey to customers that you are in business to stay. NSBE’s objective is to be diverse and cross many bodies of water to develop the endeavors of engineers all over the world. The Engineers have somewhat of the same ideology and philosophy of the Moors (Mohr) to be industrious and build civilizations. Setting the prospective is what The National Society of Black Engineer are doing. Not by shrinking down the skills and talents of each individual, but allowing student learners and professionals to study, set an agenda, a plan, and develop a Master plan for success. The Free Online Dictionary referred to the perspective as, “A mental view or outlook, an understanding of how aspects of a subject relate to each other and to the whole, Subjective evaluation of relative significance; a point of view, and The ability to perceive things in their actual interrelations or comparative importance (2015). NSBE is setting the perspective by staying focused on their agenda and plan to create engineers for the future. By developing in rural areas and rural countries along with educating students and professionals within cities has created a new generation of learners.
  • 12. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 12 Customer The audience and customer are actually student learners and professionals. They are not just customers but they are members as well. The memberships are classified as such:  NSBE Jr. Dare to SOAR in RARE AIR…  International - For individuals who reside outside of the U.S. and Canada. International The customers could also be consider the corporations that invest into NSBE like GE Electric, Ford, and all other corporations that invest and funds NSBE and their associate chapters. Audience Base The audience base is the investor whom funds the programs the NSBE develops. The audience is also the people and the parent partners that send their children to NSBE for training programs that want to see their children grown, learn, and shine. What The National Society of Black Engineers has done is created a community of engineers, developers, and doctors that brings the audience in through proven success factors and teaching. “Another very powerful way to build client relationships and generate referrals is to bring your prospects and clients together” (Jantsch, 2006). Since NSBE knows the diverse population of people per country they know how to target the correct audience, cliental, and customer base. Many of their customers also come from the collegiate community along with major corporation that are on the forefront of society to date. Josh Jantsch the author of ‘Duct Tape Marking’ also went on to state, “I think a couple of things are at work here. When you bring a group of your customers together, they can
  • 13. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 13 indeed see firsthand that others, very much like them, put their trust in you” (2006). Showcasing and window shopping are ideal right now for NSBE and their student/professionals. For certain NSBE’s investments will continue to flow in by them being doers, being diverse in culture, and through excellent collaborations. Leadership and Commitment Leadership means everything when it comes to major corporation, major building, and development. If you want to build an empire you must always build it with those who took the time and effort to obtain the needed education, book knowledge, and practical application through trial and error to success. These people who have built companies rather they be big or small can tell you what works and does not work. The correct leadership usually demonstrates this in every way possible. Breaking through the glass ceil in 1975 is what NSBE did for the African American Community and minorities of diverse populations all over the world. This should be the norm within management and leadership. Leaders in any major infrastructure need to stay committed whether they be a CEO, CFO, CCO and COO of the organization. NSBE has made it possible for minorities and woman alike to break through the class ceiling through education, training, and development of their craft. “A review of corporate middle management reveals that the numbers of women and minorities in managerial positions are at an all-time high. This is a breakthrough worthy of celebrating” (Nigro, 2003). For NSBE whom made a brilliant move by bringing on a woman by the name of Sossena Wood as the Executive Board of the National Society Of Black Engineers. By employing her as the new Executive Board member this made it evident to women and minorities alike that the door to become an engineer is available more now than ever.
  • 14. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 14 NSBE Reputation The National Society of Black Engineers has an awesome reputation and proven track record for success. By taking children whom come from all walks of life; some from poverty, and giving them a better way of living through education and mentoring them is pure genius. This fundamental way of thinking, teaching, and learning is how you teach a child to become self-sufficient through education, and by giving them the tools they need to succeed. Engineers and doctors are at the top of the food chain within society and education by all means. This is the plan of NSBE is to allow students and professionals the chance, and opportunity to rise and shine which is currently in full force. Johnson & Blanchard of the ‘One Minute Manager’ stated, “The best minute I spend is the one I invest in people” (Blanchard and Johnson, 1981). NSBE reputation to invest in the futures of college students and youth is ideal thinking to ensure that engineers have an outlet, brother/sisterhood, and group of people whom have the same mind setting and philosophy of excellence. The reputation of NSBE stands above many other engineering association programs and groups when it comes to giving back to the community and country. Policies, Procedures, Practices, and Diversity The National Society of Black Engineers are governed by: Policies and procedure, alumni operations guidelines, bylaws, and privacy policies. “All organizations should have a set of bylaws which specifies: how the organization is governed, what its object or purpose is, how someone can become a member, the duties and obligations of members, how officers are elected, and each officer's duties, how many business meetings there are in a year, the names of the standing committees, the name of the parliamentary authority, and how the bylaws are amended”
  • 15. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 15 (WDYBS, 1995). The privacy policies just inform the client, student, customer, and investor that he or she’s information will be guard from 3rd parties and also fraudulent interactions. The Alumni Operations Guidelines enforce measurements and rules to all alumni on behavior, conduct, dues, and membership. They also illustrated the function of the elected board and their duties as a board member. The bylaws of NSBE follow under the Robert Rules of Order for corporation and are formatted in that particular order of doing business as a corporation. NSBE uses the parliamentary law to conduct business and business meetings which is the best way because it bring upon order. "The application of parliamentary law is the best method yet devised to enable assemblies of any size, with due regard for every member’s opinion, to arrive at the general will on the maximum number of questions of varying complexity in a minimum amount of time and under all kinds of internal climate ranging from total harmony to hardened or impassioned division of opinion” (Robert Rules, 2013). NSBE is a national organization with national delegates this involves dealing with diverse populations and cultures therefore they do not discriminate against people regardless of race, nationality, ethnicity, or gender. From the look of things NSBE has a very set agenda and strategy to improve their collaborations with corporations and joint ventures within schools and communities. The rules regulations, bylaws, and policies give a written foundation on what is to be expected from the members to exemplify excellent within the organization. “In 2015, we will build our legacy - one black engineer at a time" this was stated at the National Convention for NSBE in Anaheim California. The phrase black does not exclude Latinos, Asians, or any other minority group from becoming a member, but NSBE always works on the home front within regards to their mission statement. NSBE does not discriminate against anyone with disabilities as long as they are teachable.
  • 16. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 16 Summary From researching and collecting information in regards to The National Society of Black Engineers it is evident that they are on the move and rising to newer heights due to their diverse population of engineers, mentoring programs, and venture within other countries. NSBE has increased their opportunities for minorities and collaborated with major corporation to ensure longevity and to also ensure that future sustainable is accessible. Conclusion There are many other engineering groups within the United States like; American Engineering Group (AEG), MSIDC-Engineering Groups, Professional Engineering Groups, Inc., American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and many more engineering associations and organizations. For NSBE it is clearly evident that they are making moves by obtain superb investors and funding for their programs like Seek that truly believes that you must invest in your youth. The National Society of Black Engineers stated, "We are excited about the continued growth and sustainability of the program," said NSBE Executive Director Karl W. Reid, Ed.D. "We're proud to provide this educational opportunity to 4,500 students this year, many of whom may not have engaged in this kind of learning otherwise” (NSBE, 2015). The opportunities that these children and scholars are obtaining are massive which I call a once in a life time chance to explore the development of engineering through, math and robotics. For college grads internships are available for students whom are seeking advancement within their career in the line of engineer along with the chance to receive a scholarship from a major corporation. As long as NSBE keep all the channels of opportunity open and exceptional collaboration at hand then NSBE should always do well. Unless they turned a student or child
  • 17. ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY 17 learner away which should never happen. The National Society of Black Engineers should never let down their guard of excellence ever. With senior board members whom prepare an annual staff development plan linked to the organization’s strategic plan it should show in detail how NSBE will for the next 20 years continue to implement programs along with a doable marketing plan that will outsource to more corporations, and businesses that are willing to invest in the brand of NSBE and their student members. NSBE should always have a six month goal appraisal meeting in regards to the entire infrastructure, and within this meeting it would be in the best interest for them to have a set agenda, list of goals that can be meet, and appraisal evaluation in regards to the quality of the organization (how can they improve). NSBE from here on out should be nothing but extraordinary, exceptional, and astonishing in all they do and deliver, and by all means thus far The National Society of Black Engineers is impressive!
