2. Medical Abbreviations:
• Medical Abbreviations are used often in the medical field by
healthcare workers such as doctors and nurse to communicate
within each other in a standard form. For instance, nurses
making notes on their patients use them to communicate with
other nurses. Doctors use them when writing out medical
orders or patient histories.
3. There are three main reasons abbreviations are
helpful and necessary in the medical field:
Universal Communication
Maintain Confidentiality
They Save Time
4. One reason why they aren't helpful and necessary
is.
An Increase In Errors
5. PE:
PE stands for Pressure Equilizing tube
PE are tiny cylinders, usually made of plastic or metal, that are
surgically inserted into the eardrum. An ear tube creates an airway
that ventilates the middle ear and prevents the accumulation of
fluids behind the eardrum
7. BC:
• BC stands for bone conduction
• Bone conduction is the conduction of sound to the inner ear
through the bones of the skull. Bone conduction transmission can
be used with individuals with normal or impaired hearing.
9. OM:
OM stands for Otitis media.
Otitis media is a group of inflammatory diseases of the middle ear.[1] The two
main types are acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME).[2]
AOM is an infection of abrupt onset that usually presents with ear pain. In young
children this may result in pulling at the ear, increased crying, and poor sleep.
Decreased eating and a fever may also be present. OME is typically not associated
with symptoms.
10. EM:
• EM stands for emmetropia.
• Emmetropia is a state in which the eye is relaxed and focused
on an object more than 6 meters or 20 feet away. The light rays
coming from that object are essentially parallel, and the rays are
focused on the retina without effort (an emmetropic eye does not
need corrective lenses).
12. EOM:
• EOM stands for extraocular movement.
• The extraocular muscles are the six muscles that control
movement of the eye (there are four in bovines[citation needed]) and
one muscle that controls eyelid elevation (levator palpebrae). The
actions of the six muscles responsible for eye movement depend
on the position of the eye at the time of muscle contraction.
13. VA:
• VA stands for Visual Acuity.
• Visual acuity is a measure of your central vision, the ability to distinguish
details and shapes of objects.
• Each eye is tested separately - and an overall score is given for both eyes or
binocular vision. So a person's Snellen test scores might be:
Left eye Right eye Binocular vision
6/6 6/6 6/6
6/12 6/6 6/6
6/12 No vision 6/12
