Essay On College Goals
When the challenge of beginning college presented itself, I had no goals in mind. When you're 18 and have a high school diploma in your hand,
people tend to see you as a piece of molding clay. Your friends and family can't resist telling you what you should do and how you should do it.
They also never fail to pile on the questions. Not having the answers to such seemingly simple questions like, "What do you want to be?" "Where do
you want to go?" "How are you going to do it?" can make a young, ambitious person question herself. But the reality was, I just did not know yet. I
considered becoming a business manager, a dental hygienist, an accountant, a nurse. Originally, I thought not having a solid plan meant I wasn't
prepared for college. However, I discovered that no matter what students aspire to pursue during their postsecondary education, everyone must complete
General Education Requirements, so that is where I began my journey.
As far as where I wanted to go, my sights were set on the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. So in 2014, I left my hometown of Haines, moved

At UAS, I had the option to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Science, but I felt completing my Pre–Nursing Qualifications
through UAF would be the better choice. By following that path, the next step would be applying to UAA's School of Nursing to pursue a Bachelor
of Science in Nursing degree, my ultimate goal. So in the summer of 2015, I moved from Juneau to Fairbanks, and now, I find myself in the final
semester of my pre–nursing requirements. Now, what's left?
This March, I will be sending in my application to the University of Alaska Anchorage School of Nursing, and hope for admission for the fall of
2017. I currently hold a Certified Nurse's Aide license for the State of Alaska, and plan to utilize its employment advatages until I acquire my nursing

Graduation Speech : High School
In the spring of 2014, I graduated as valedictorian from Klukwan High School located in the Panhandle of Alaska. During my high school career, I
maintained status on the high honor roll and received the title of Student of the Month the first month of every school year for four years. In 2011 and
2012, I was selected to attend the YouthLeadership Institute in Anchorage as a student delegate for the Chatham School District. There, I met other
high school students from all over Alaska. We spent our time at the conference exercising our newfound leadership skills in fun icebreaker games and
group activities. We also learned about our own unique leadership styles, and how we can apply them to various situations back home or anywhere.
In the fall of 2014, I was accepted to the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau as a full–time student. Before saying my goodbyes to my hometown,
I reflected on just how attached to the community I had become. Since my first year at Klukwan School, my K–12 classmates and I often spent our
time participating in community events within our village such as Moose Camp or beautifying the Community Garden. Every year on Earth Day, my
class and I organized ourselves into groups, set–up routes, and initiated our annual Village Clean–Up. While Village Clean–Up always concluded with
a delightful barbeque, our favorite event was always Culture Days. Culture Days consisted of inviting other schools and community members to
participate in a week full of fun

The Human Web: Class Notes
Part VI – Spinning the worldwide web (1450–1800) пѓ Beginning in around 1450, peoples of the earth increasingly formed a more single

Essay on Hawaiian Navigation
Hawaiian Navigation
How did the Polynesians find their way to Hawaii, over two thousand miles from any other land? Was it over population at home, or political turmoil?
Whatever reason for leaving these people used amazing knowledge and skill of the ocean and of the sky to navigate them to this new land. They faced
the unknown and braved into the wide–open ocean for long periods of time. The real focus in this paper is on the navigation techniques that they used
in these voyages throughout the Pacific.
It's impossible to teach someone the significance or the act of loving the stars and the ocean but that's what makes navigation without instruments
(wayfinding) so beautiful. One can "give the heavens a meaning his own meaning" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then in the 1980's came the voyages of rediscovery navigated by Nainoa Thompson from Hawaii to Tahiti and from Tahiti back to Hawaii.
Thompson was the first Hawaiian to sail this route in over 500 years. The voyages in between took the Hokule'a (some 16000 miles) to the Society
Islands, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa and back home via Aitutaki, Tahiti, Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Archipelago (Baybayan, Kawaharada,
1996). The Hokule'a became the symbol of pride in Polynesian heritage that links all the people of Polynesia together.
In the 1990's there were more voyages to Marquesan Islands and from the West Coast of the United States up to Alaska. This is when education
became the focus of the voyages of the Hokule'a. They then built the Hawaiilo'a, another Polynesian voyaging canoe, this one made of traditional
materials. The Hawaiilo'a added to the curiosity and the revival of culture throughout the world. The natives of all ands throughout the world are
figuring out the importance of their cultures and bringing back the knowledge. Now all cultures worldwide can help each other save the past and use it
for the future.

Nainoa Thompson created the star compass, as the basis for direction finding in non–instrument navigation. The horizon is divided into 32 sections
called "houses." Nainoa has placed

The Four Types Of Welding Career
Welding
Most of the dangers in welding are related to the wielder. Others are due to the environment that they have to go to. In welding, most people can do
most all things people would want to do. The four main types of welding are Shielded Metal Arc Welding (The stick or SMAW), Metal Inert Gas
welding (Mig or GMAW), Oxyfuel Gas Welding (Oxyfuel or OFW) and Tungsten Inert Gas welding (Tig). Welding is also a great career path because
it pays well. The only drawback to it is that the wielder will have to travel. In welding, there are three main careers they can go into. There are
structural, pipe, and Tig welding. Welding has a lot of big names. Lincoln and Miller are two of the biggest welding companies in the world. Even
though welding is a dangerous job, welding is a good career because there are many different things people can do in a welding career and many types
of jobs in a welding career.
There are a lot of dangers in welding. Some of the dangers are ergonomic, electric shock, ultraviolet light, toxic fumes and gases, heat, and noise.
Ergonomic is a danger because the work environment the wielder never knows where the wielder will be working. The work conditions can range
from really cold to really hot. In the workplace the wielder could be welding anywhere from the top of skyscrapers to the bottom of the oceans. The
ultraviolet light in welding is harmful because it is like the radiation from the sun and it can damage the wielder's skin. The ultraviolet light is

Ethnicity And Ethnicity
Literature Review
The concept of ethnicity is not clearly defined is social science research However, it is often associated with culture, nationality and language of
defined groups (Chandra, 2006; Shah and Davis, 2017). In 2015, the Office of Management and Budget revised the Standards for the Classification of
Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity (See Table 1). Socioeconomic status (SES) includes income and educational attainment, financial security and
perceptions of social class (Shavers, 2007; Nicklett, 2011). Numerous studies have suggested that a strong relationship between ethnicity and
socioeconomic status exists in America. SES pervades many human functioning to include physical and mental health (Nicklett, 2011; Williams,
Mohammed, Leavell, and Collins, 2010). Studies have suggested that ethnicity is related to illness, impairment and death rates (Williams, Mohammed,
Leavell, and Collins, 2010). Communities in American are often segregated by SES, race, and ethnicity. Minority communities commonly share
characteristics of low economic development, poor health conditions and low levels of educational attainment. Low SES has consistently been
implicated as a risk factor for many of these problems that plague communities. Research indicates that there are large health disparities based on social
status that are pervasive and persistent (McGuire, and Miranda, 2008; Fiscella, Gold, and Clancy, 2008). These health disparities reflect the inequalities
that exist in

Biological And Environmental Influence Of Biomes On Earth
Biomes is an area on earth that can be classified according to plants and animals that live there. Each biome consists of many ecosystems whose
communities have adapted to the small differences in climate and the environment inside the biome. There are many different types of biomes on
earth's surface. The divisions are based on climate patterns, soil types, animals, and plants that inhabit the area. There are five basic types of biomes
which includes; desert, aquatic, grasslands, forest, and tundra. The tundra is a biome typified by permafrost, permanently frozen ground, that is found
in polar regions and isolated patches at the tops of mountains. The tundra is located all over the world. Places such as Alaska, Northern Canada, edges of

Online instruction is referred to as teaching and learning that is mediated by a computer (Jones, 1997). Although the motivation for enrollment and
retention in an online program for adult students is discussed in the literature review, the types of instruction may vary from simple correspondence or
asynchronous communication through electronic mail, chat rooms for classroom discussion, and video–taped classes.
Online programs and virtual universities are an answer to adult students who are very busy with their lives in their careers and family life and cannot or
will not attend a traditional university that holds sessions in a classroom on a campus, most often during the daytime hours when adult students are at

Profiles of Online Students
The Colorado Community College (2001) or CCC found that students were "older, more mature" meaning perhaps that they were not the usual age
ranges of eighteen to twenty–one. The gender was 63% female, and 37% male, as opposed to the ratio of 40% females and 60% males for CPU
(Drews, 2001, personal communication) which includes not only Americans, but Asian and Southeast Asian students as well. Ten percent of CCC
students are from abroad from countries in South America, Africa, and in the Caribbean (CCC, 2001). Lakeland College (2001), gave a profile of
online students as forty–four percent being between the ages of twenty–six to forty. Sixty–five percent female, 52% have a family income of $25,000 to
$50,000 per year, 60% employed for thirty or more hours per week, 83% having their own computers, and 79% accessing the Internet from the home

GPA of 3.0 or higher, completed more than thirty college credit hours, with an internal locus of control and an abstract learning style. For CPU, as
confirmed by the president and administrator, the students are also older, ranging from mid–twenties to sixties, with full–time employment, good

Solution To Plastic Pollution
I am writing this letter because our ocean's ecosystem is in danger due to plastic pollution. According to the United Nations, approximately 60 to
95 percent of the pollution in our oceans is caused by waste, specifically plastic. In a study conducted by Plymouth University, they found that at
least 700 marine species are negatively impacted by plastic pollution and approximately 100 million marine mammals are killed each year from
plastic pollution. That being the case, plastics have affected a large amount of marine species. We see plastic everywhere; plastic bags, drink
bottles, Styrofoam, micro plastics, and so on. Plastics also releases different types of toxins that are both harmful to marine animals and humans.
Marine animals are dying every day because they are ingesting plastic waste. They also get tangled up in the debris and slowly die because they
are unable to move and escape. Greenpeace reported there are at least 267 different species that have suffered from the ingestion of plastic and
entanglement. One of these species is the loggerhead sea turtle. The jellyfish are a source of nutrition for these sea turtles and they have mistaken
floating garbage as their source of food. In addition, these sea turtles have been found with ropes, soft plastic, and monofilament lines inside their
stomachs. The ingestion of these plastics has led to blockage inside their gut causing death. According to research more than half of the sea turtles are
ingesting plastic. Seabirds are also facing the consequences of plastic debris in the oceans. When seabirds use plastic as a source of nutrition, their
stomach reduces in volume and they eat less leading to their death. For instance, Albatrosses are a popular species of bird that suffer from the
consequences of plastic pollution. Observations from Captain Moore and his team found that the birds were eating plastic and specifically picking the
red, pink and brown colors. Moore stated that the reason they were picking these colors were because the birds thought the plastic pieces were shrimp.
Consequently, the ingestion of the plastics killed the albatrosses since the plastic blocked their intestinal track or stuck to their windpipes causing
suffocation.

Higher Education Enrollment
Higher education in the U.S. has grown to become a vast enterprise comprising some 7,253 colleges and universities, 17.3 million students, 1.5 million
faculty and staff members, and aggregate annual expenditures exceeding 515 million dollars (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016).
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2016), in fall of 2014, undergraduate enrollment saw an increase of 31 percent increase
from 2000, when enrollment was 13.2 million students. Interestingly enough, while total undergraduate enrollment increased by 37 percent between
2000 and 2010, enrollment decreased by four percent between 2010 and 2014. Furthermore, of the total 17.3 million students, 10.6 million were
enrolled in four–year institutions, with the remaining 6.7 million enrolled in two–year institutions. To accommodate student enrollment, enrollment
increased by 44 percent in four–year institutions and by 29 percent in two–year institutions, majority of which occurred in for–profit institutions. Of the
total number of students enrolled, 56 percent were White, 17 percent were Hispanic, 14 percent were Black, six percent were Asian, and the remaining
seven percent were American Indian/Alaska Native or Pacific Islander (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016).

The three famous Alaskans my dad would bring to dinner would be Wyatt Earp, Joseph Juneau, and Gunner Kaasen. The reason why he would bring

says in recent years Alaska has become too political to the point where politics has taken over the state. For example, our Permanent Fund Dividend is

fact that commercial fishers are more important. The most significant event that happened in Alaska while my dad has lived here was the death of Ted

Since the dawn of history, volcanoes have been an awe inspiring feature of the earth that has frightened and intrigued mankind. Volcanoes have taken
the lives of over 250,000 people in the last three hundred years and changed the lives of millions of others, but up until recently humans have had very
little understanding of the volcanic processes that presage an eruption. The advent and implementation of new technologies and scientific methods has
allowed us to begin to comprehend the inner workings of one of nature's most powerful forces. Through understanding how volcanoes work,

The graph to the right displays the number of earthquakes in the months leading up to three eruptions that occurred on June 27, August 18, and
September 16–17 of 1992 at Mt. Spurr, located 80 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska. The vertical red lines indicate the eruptions. The graph shows that
there was an erratic but visible increase in the frequency of seismic activity leading up to the first eruption. It also shows that the second and third
eruptions were not preceded by a marked increase in seismic activity, and that during two weeks following the last eruption in November and
December, a large frequency of earthquakes took place without an eruption occurring afterwards. This illustrates how difficult it can be to predict when
an eruption is likely to take place and underscores the importance of using several methods concurrently to predict volcanism.
Monitoring ground deformation in the vicinity of a volcano is another valuable tool for understanding what's going on underground. When magma
rises, it often causes the rock above it to deform or uplift in the form of a dome, and these domes indicate activity below the surface that could be a
warning sign of an eruption. One of the most dramatic occurrences of uplift occurred prior to the Mt. St. Helens eruption of 1980 when the volcano's
north side bulged out over 100 meters in only two months. Scientists and technicians measure both horizontal and vertical ground

Alaska Personal Narrative
Alaska is my home. I've never known anything else, so when deciding on a college, staying instate was emotionally and financially viable. I chose the
University of Alaska Fairbanks because it was the strongest science schools out of the UA system and the administration awarded me a slew of
scholarships just as enticing as the freedom the interior of Alaska offered. Figuring the interior of Alaska would be a welcome change to the lush
rainforest of my hometown Juneau, I was jazzed to continue learning without falling into debt. The beginning of my college experience was as typical
as any other: I missed my family, friends, and home. Being uprooted from familiar soil and forced to settle in a garden teeming with (obnoxious)
roommates, communal

Cause And Effect On Climate Change
Climate change is an issue that is becoming more and more evident in today's society. "Climate change is a variation in the unusual weather found
in a place.'' According to NASA researchers; People who study earth have noticed the Earth is getting warmer. "Earth's temperature has increased by
1 degree Fahrenheit in the last one hundred years. This may not seem like much, but small changes in the Earth's temperature can have big effects."
(NASA). After many researches, scientist have come to believe there will be more snow and ice to melt and the ocean level will rise, get hotter, and
other places will have colder winters with a lot of snow while other places have more rain than others. For example, Hurricane Harvey in Texas and
Hurricane Irma in Florida. This climate change will have a significant impact on the environment, biodiversity, and on human health.
To start off, climate change is an issue that is impacting the world. After many researches, it is illustrated that the major effect climate change has is on
the environment. One problem being the emission of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases have being problem since the late 1900s. During the
industrial revolution, the environment was severely impacted; the use of enormous amount of chemicals and the burning of fuel resulted in an increase
of water, and air pollution to the environment. "Global climate change is real, and developing alternative energy sources and reducing global carbon

My Argument With Knowledge There Is Power
I believe with knowledge there is power. Therefore, those who choose to become educated allow themselves the ability to become powerful.
Those who have succeeded in this pursuit range from those who participate in the political aspect of how our country is ran, to those who own
small businesses and employ others in need of a job. While the phrase "powerful" can be interpreted as controlling or barbaric, or is reserved only
for those who control the lives of many, it can also pertain to having power over your own life, and controlling how it will be ran. I believe the ability
to have such power comes not only from strong will and determination, but also a solid education, which is exactly what I am after. By pursuing
employment in the state

Zombies In Vampires And Zombies
Vampires and zombies are popular characters for Halloween party costumes. Both ghastly creatures taken from urban myths have one thing common
that is real. It is rabies, an infectious disease spread through the bite of an infected animal such as the dog.
Inside Science reported that the mystery behind how the tiny virus exerts its influence has been revealed. Researchers found that a fragment of one of
the proteins of the virus can change animal behavior.
Altering animal behavior
The fragment of the virus' protein blocks vital chemical messengers in the brain. It was enough to stop the pumping of the digestive tracts of worms and
make rodents run frantically around their cages. When rabies infects dogs, the animal becomes bold and highly aggressive.
It will attack people and other creatures that will flee. The rabies–infected animal loses the ability to swallow, causing its mouth to overflow with
infectious saliva. When an infected dog bites a person, the virus will die without infecting anyone. But the human bite–victim often behaves in
disturbing and extreme ways. Thiravat Hemenachudha, a rabies researcher and neurologist at the Neuroscience Centre for Research and Development,
said the bite victims often scream and overreact to any stimuli, both light and sound. The patient must be injected with up to 480 milligrams of
intravenous valium daily. It is 96 times the dose which sends people to doze right away.
Patients injected with valium will sleep immediately. It is an

Jenna Ethinicity In Looking For Alaska
A race is a group of people who see themselves, and are seen by others, as having hereditary traits that set them apart (Hughes & Kroehler, 2013, p.
213). People naturally make judgements about a person based on their looks, especially when they don't share the same hereditary triats. I have
judged a person based on what they looked like without even knowing them. You have to make a conscious effort to change the way you think. You
truly can't judge a person until you know who they are, which means looking past their outter apperance. In our book they talk about a little boy
named Gregory who had the outer apperance of a white person. Later people found out that his father was actually black and because of that he was
then viewed as black (Hughes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the employees kept on eye on her, her friends, and family. She noticed that peoples demenar changed while talking to a white person comapred to

the end of our conversation I asked her how we could change the problem our society has with racial differences. Jenna stated " I think that it will
hard to educate people because they are already set in their ways; but if we can teach kids about these problems early on in school hopefully we will

But the company "Iraq Petroleum Company" still remains extant as a name on paper,[37] and one of its associated company–Abu Dhabi Petroleum

The intensified power struggle between oil companies and host governments in Middle East, along with the oil price shocks that followed the 1973 oil
crisis; meant British Petroleum lost most of its direct access to crude oil supplies produced in countries that belonged to the Organization of Petroleum
Exporting Countries (OPEC), and prompted it to diversify its operations beyond the heavily Middle East dependent oil production. In 1978 the
company acquired a controlling interest in Standard Oil of Ohio or Sohio, a breakaway entity from former Standard Oil following the anti–trust
litigation of 1911.[40] In Iran, British Petroleum continued to operate until the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The new regime of Ayatollah Khomeini
confiscated all of the company's assets in Iran without compensation, bringing to an end its 70–year presence in Iran.[citation needed]

stand out to me. The teachers here at KHS have always been able to provide as much help as needed. Not only have the teachers been a part of my

about managing the change process in my school.
The complex social and historical foundations of education are rooted in the need to create a population of citizens capable of contributing to the

globalization has created the compelling need for technology infused education in our schools (Friedman, 2005). As an educational technology leader, I

A Brief Note On Iowa Beef Packers ( Ibp )
While America's economy has fluctuated significantly throughout the last century, growth has remained consistent in the meatpacking industry;
companies like IBP Inc. reported profits of $198 million on sales of $12.5 billion back in 1997 (Hettena, Seth. 1997). Today, Iowa Beef Packers
(IBP) is one of four companies including ConAgra, National Beef and Excel that collectively comprise the meatpacking industry in United States.
Excel is a subsidiary of Cargill, which alone controls 85 percent of the market (Gzedit. 2001). Unions, which are in place to prevent workers' rights
from being overlooked, now find themselves far removed from the locations of factories owned by these companies, and more undocumented workers
are being hired with little to no incentive for change. "Decades ago, meatpacking was centered in labor–friendly urban areas. But the giant stockyards
of Chicago, Fort Worth and Kansas City are long gone. The industry built huge plants closer to the livestock–and in right–to–work states where unions
are far less popular" (Sharon. 2006). Unions are not providing adequate protection for the workers, and more undocumented workers are being hired,
which raises a question: are illegal immigrants taking advantage of the system, or is the system taking advantage of them? Risks and Subsequent
Changes The risks associated with working in meatpacking factories have plagued the industry for a long time. Upton Sinclair's The Jungle exposed

The Wide Spread Of Higher Education Essay
Today, colleges and universities have assumed an important role far beyond their role in earlier times. Since the 20th century, economic and social
changes have transformed higher education into a primary gateway to the middle–class, providing minorities and women with opportunities to advance
against longstanding exclusion from mainstream higher education (Eckel & King, n.d.). Given the change, Americans now view access to higher
education as a necessary component of the nation's ideal as a "land of opportunity" (Eckel & King, n.d.). With this recently developed opportunity, jobs
have demanded more knowledgeable and well–trained adults with the skills required to practice in a given profession, manage a wide variety of
organizations, and complete an increasing proportion of tasks in a more technologically sophisticated economy (Eckel & King, n.d.; Bok, 2015). The
wide spread of higher education opportunities has helped to strengthen America's democracy by providing its future leaders knowledge and ideas to
create new industries, protect us from disease, preserve and enrich our culture, and inform us about our history, our environment, our society, and
ourselves (Bok, 2015).

My Career As A Part Time Student
I'm thirty one years old and ready to fulfill my goals of becoming a criminologist. I work full time and I'm a mother of two, furthermore, I will be
pursuing my career as a part–time student. My short–time goal is to receive an associate's degree of arts at the University of Alaska Southeast. I need
to focus on one degree at a time, which involves working towards my associate's degree to start with. With the feeling of ambition running through
my veins, I am aware that in order to become a criminologist, it takes time. My midterm goal is to transfer to the University of Fairbanks to complete a
bachelor's in sociology. I will attend to the University of Fairbanks classes online. I have chosen a degree in sociology for reasons of interest and the
variety of job types obtainable with a sociology degree seems greater. A master's degree in criminology will be a long–term goal. At this time, I don't
have a projection for where I will obtain my master's degree, however I anticipate that I will reach a course that will be lead in a positive direction.
At a rate of two classes per semester, I will be able to attain my bachelor's degree in eight years. I have not been to school in over ten years,
therefore, I feel two classes will be my minimum. I am hoping with time I'll be able to handle three, or complete summer classes to jump ahead. Once
I comprehend a feel for how much work I can handle, I will have an accurate timeframe for completion time. I am excited to begin my journey

Solar and Lunar Eclipes
Procrastination is part of the human condition. We avoid what's painful and stay in our comfort zones. That's why we occasionally need a little cosmic
kick in the pants to push us off the fence and into action. Eclipses are these agents of change. They fall four to six times a year and turn things
upside–down. In our disoriented state, we may act out of character or see turbulence in the world. Eclipses can also help break patterns and shift
dynamics. However, most astrologers suggest waiting a week or so before taking drastic action, allowing the eclipse energy to settle first. A lunar
eclipse occurs when the Moon passes behind the Earth so that the Earth blocks the Sun's rays from striking the Moon. This can occur only when the Sun,

Essay On Hawaii Volcanoes
Hawaii: Geology's Volcanic Wonder of the World It is well know that Hawaii is very volcanically active and is home to the world's most active
volcanoes. Hawaii is unique because the islands are caused by a 'hot spot' in the middle of the Pacific Plate, one of the largest crustal plates on earth.
There are only a few 'hot spots' on earth and they occur in an area where the plate is thin and weak creating volcanism, where molten magma ruptures
the earth's crust. For Hawaii, the 'hot spot' is under the sea floor, it creates under sea volcanoes. Over millions of years these volcanoes build up to sea
level and become islands. As for Hawaii, the Pacific Plate has moved northwest across this 'hot spot' creating what we know today as the Hawaiian
Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. In all, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

moved and began high school in a different state I started to notice that many of the students, professors, and even local officers were, for lack of a
better word, racist to not only African–Americans but also Hispanics and Middle Easterners. One example of this is the Trayvon Martin case where in
the end a man who was clearly guilty was acquitted because of the fact that the suspect who he killed, Trayvon, might have been a "17 year old
undisciplined punk thug" who was putting Zimmerman's life in "danger"(Qtd from Sundance). It hurt me to see that as a world we have not learned
from our past mistakes. After seeing so many cases of swayed judgment due to racial bias, I wanted to look further into how race affects the judgment of
others and if that leads to racial profiling. I found many sources that look at the creation of racial profiling, clear evidence of the occurrence of racial
profiling, and how it has affected the lives of the people who are wrongly accused. One source I found is a scholarly article written by Professor David
D. Cole, a professor at

Essay On College Goals

  • 1. Essay On College Goals When the challenge of beginning college presented itself, I had no goals in mind. When you're 18 and have a high school diploma in your hand, people tend to see you as a piece of molding clay. Your friends and family can't resist telling you what you should do and how you should do it. They also never fail to pile on the questions. Not having the answers to such seemingly simple questions like, "What do you want to be?" "Where do you want to go?" "How are you going to do it?" can make a young, ambitious person question herself. But the reality was, I just did not know yet. I considered becoming a business manager, a dental hygienist, an accountant, a nurse. Originally, I thought not having a solid plan meant I wasn't prepared for college. However, I discovered that no matter what students aspire to pursue during their postsecondary education, everyone must complete General Education Requirements, so that is where I began my journey. As far as where I wanted to go, my sights were set on the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. So in 2014, I left my hometown of Haines, moved into the brand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At UAS, I had the option to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Science, but I felt completing my Pre–Nursing Qualifications through UAF would be the better choice. By following that path, the next step would be applying to UAA's School of Nursing to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, my ultimate goal. So in the summer of 2015, I moved from Juneau to Fairbanks, and now, I find myself in the final semester of my pre–nursing requirements. Now, what's left? This March, I will be sending in my application to the University of Alaska Anchorage School of Nursing, and hope for admission for the fall of 2017. I currently hold a Certified Nurse's Aide license for the State of Alaska, and plan to utilize its employment advatages until I acquire my nursing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Graduation Speech : High School In the spring of 2014, I graduated as valedictorian from Klukwan High School located in the Panhandle of Alaska. During my high school career, I maintained status on the high honor roll and received the title of Student of the Month the first month of every school year for four years. In 2011 and 2012, I was selected to attend the YouthLeadership Institute in Anchorage as a student delegate for the Chatham School District. There, I met other high school students from all over Alaska. We spent our time at the conference exercising our newfound leadership skills in fun icebreaker games and group activities. We also learned about our own unique leadership styles, and how we can apply them to various situations back home or anywhere. In the fall of 2014, I was accepted to the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau as a full–time student. Before saying my goodbyes to my hometown, I reflected on just how attached to the community I had become. Since my first year at Klukwan School, my K–12 classmates and I often spent our time participating in community events within our village such as Moose Camp or beautifying the Community Garden. Every year on Earth Day, my class and I organized ourselves into groups, set–up routes, and initiated our annual Village Clean–Up. While Village Clean–Up always concluded with a delightful barbeque, our favorite event was always Culture Days. Culture Days consisted of inviting other schools and community members to participate in a week full of fun ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Essay on Hawaiian Navigation Hawaiian Navigation How did the Polynesians find their way to Hawaii, over two thousand miles from any other land? Was it over population at home, or political turmoil? Whatever reason for leaving these people used amazing knowledge and skill of the ocean and of the sky to navigate them to this new land. They faced the unknown and braved into the wide–open ocean for long periods of time. The real focus in this paper is on the navigation techniques that they used in these voyages throughout the Pacific. It's impossible to teach someone the significance or the act of loving the stars and the ocean but that's what makes navigation without instruments (wayfinding) so beautiful. The voyages in between took the Hokule'a (some 16000 miles) to the Society Islands, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa and back home via Aitutaki, Tahiti, Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Archipelago (Baybayan, Kawaharada, 1996). The Hokule'a became the symbol of pride in Polynesian heritage that links all the people of Polynesia together. In the 1990's there were more voyages to Marquesan Islands and from the West Coast of the United States up to Alaska. This is when education became the focus of the voyages of the Hokule'a. They then built the Hawaiilo'a, another Polynesian voyaging canoe, this one made of traditional materials. The Hawaiilo'a added to the curiosity and the revival of culture throughout the world. The natives of all ands throughout the world are figuring out the importance of their cultures and bringing back the knowledge. • 6. The Four Types Of Welding Career Welding Most of the dangers in welding are related to the wielder. Others are due to the environment that they have to go to. In welding, most people can do most all things people would want to do. The four main types of welding are Shielded Metal Arc Welding (The stick or SMAW), Metal Inert Gas welding (Mig or GMAW), Oxyfuel Gas Welding (Oxyfuel or OFW) and Tungsten Inert Gas welding (Tig). Welding is also a great career path because it pays well. The only drawback to it is that the wielder will have to travel. In welding, there are three main careers they can go into. There are structural, pipe, and Tig welding. Welding has a lot of big names. Lincoln and Miller are two of the biggest welding companies in the world. Even though welding is a dangerous job, welding is a good career because there are many different things people can do in a welding career and many types of jobs in a welding career. There are a lot of dangers in welding. Some of the dangers are ergonomic, electric shock, ultraviolet light, toxic fumes and gases, heat, and noise. Ergonomic is a danger because the work environment the wielder never knows where the wielder will be working. The work conditions can range from really cold to really hot. In the workplace the wielder could be welding anywhere from the top of skyscrapers to the bottom of the oceans. The ultraviolet light in welding is harmful because it is like the radiation from the sun and it can damage the wielder's skin. The ultraviolet light is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Ethnicity And Ethnicity Literature Review The concept of ethnicity is not clearly defined is social science research However, it is often associated with culture, nationality and language of defined groups (Chandra, 2006; Shah and Davis, 2017). In 2015, the Office of Management and Budget revised the Standards for the Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity (See Table 1). Socioeconomic status (SES) includes income and educational attainment, financial security and perceptions of social class (Shavers, 2007; Nicklett, 2011). Numerous studies have suggested that a strong relationship between ethnicity and socioeconomic status exists in America. SES pervades many human functioning to include physical and mental health (Nicklett, 2011; Williams, Mohammed, Leavell, and Collins, 2010). Studies have suggested that ethnicity is related to illness, impairment and death rates (Williams, Mohammed, Leavell, and Collins, 2010). Communities in American are often segregated by SES, race, and ethnicity. Minority communities commonly share characteristics of low economic development, poor health conditions and low levels of educational attainment. Low SES has consistently been implicated as a risk factor for many of these problems that plague communities. Research indicates that there are large health disparities based on social status that are pervasive and persistent (McGuire, and Miranda, 2008; Fiscella, Gold, and Clancy, 2008). Although the motivation for enrollment and retention in an online program for adult students is discussed in the literature review, the types of instruction may vary from simple correspondence or asynchronous communication through electronic mail, chat rooms for classroom discussion, and video–taped classes. Online programs and virtual universities are an answer to adult students who are very busy with their lives in their careers and family life and cannot or will not attend a traditional university that holds sessions in a classroom on a campus, most often during the daytime hours when adult students are at work. • 10. Solution To Plastic Pollution I am writing this letter because our ocean's ecosystem is in danger due to plastic pollution. According to the United Nations, approximately 60 to 95 percent of the pollution in our oceans is caused by waste, specifically plastic. In a study conducted by Plymouth University, they found that at least 700 marine species are negatively impacted by plastic pollution and approximately 100 million marine mammals are killed each year from plastic pollution. That being the case, plastics have affected a large amount of marine species. We see plastic everywhere; plastic bags, drink bottles, Styrofoam, micro plastics, and so on. Plastics also releases different types of toxins that are both harmful to marine animals and humans. Marine animals are dying every day because they are ingesting plastic waste. They also get tangled up in the debris and slowly die because they are unable to move and escape. Greenpeace reported there are at least 267 different species that have suffered from the ingestion of plastic and entanglement. One of these species is the loggerhead sea turtle. The jellyfish are a source of nutrition for these sea turtles and they have mistaken floating garbage as their source of food. In addition, these sea turtles have been found with ropes, soft plastic, and monofilament lines inside their stomachs. The ingestion of these plastics has led to blockage inside their gut causing death. According to research more than half of the sea turtles are ingesting plastic. Seabirds are also facing the consequences of plastic debris in the oceans. When seabirds use plastic as a source of nutrition, their stomach reduces in volume and they eat less leading to their death. For instance, Albatrosses are a popular species of bird that suffer from the consequences of plastic pollution. Observations from Captain Moore and his team found that the birds were eating plastic and specifically picking the red, pink and brown colors. Moore stated that the reason they were picking these colors were because the birds thought the plastic pieces were shrimp. Consequently, the ingestion of the plastics killed the albatrosses since the plastic blocked their intestinal track or stuck to their windpipes causing suffocation. ... During my high school career, I maintained status on the high honor roll and received the title of Student of the Month the first month of every school year for four years. In 2011 and 2012, my sophomore and junior years of high school, I was selected both years to attend the Youth Leadership Institute as a delegate for the Chatham School District. There, I met many other high school students from all over Alaska where we exercised our leadership skills in fun icebreaker games and group activities. We also learned about our own unique leadership styles, and how we can apply them in various situations back home or anywhere. In the fall of 2014, I was accepted to the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau as a full–time student. Before I left Haines, I had plenty of memories to reflect on. My small school was constantly searching for opportunities to help our Tlingit village of Klukwan. My class and I had done everything from personally visiting elders' homes to ensure they were having a good day, to picking up highway trash because we were bored. Every year on Earth Day, my class and I strategized and initiated a Village Clean–Up that we were rewarded a barbeque with afterwards. More notably, my school organized and invited other schools and community members to visit us during our annual Culture Days. Spurr, located 80 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska. The vertical red lines indicate the eruptions. The graph shows that there was an erratic but visible increase in the frequency of seismic activity leading up to the first eruption. It also shows that the second and third eruptions were not preceded by a marked increase in seismic activity, and that during two weeks following the last eruption in November and December, a large frequency of earthquakes took place without an eruption occurring afterwards. This illustrates how difficult it can be to predict when an eruption is likely to take place and underscores the importance of using several methods concurrently to predict volcanism. Monitoring ground deformation in the vicinity of a volcano is another valuable tool for understanding what's going on underground. When magma rises, it often causes the rock above it to deform or uplift in the form of a dome, and these domes indicate activity below the surface that could be a warning sign of an eruption. One of the most dramatic occurrences of uplift occurred prior to the Mt. St. Helens eruption of 1980 when the volcano's north side bulged out over 100 meters in only two months. It is rabies, an infectious disease spread through the bite of an infected animal such as the dog. Researchers found that a fragment of one of the proteins of the virus can change animal behavior. Altering animal behavior The fragment of the virus' protein blocks vital chemical messengers in the brain. It was enough to stop the pumping of the digestive tracts of worms and make rodents run frantically around their cages. When rabies infects dogs, the animal becomes bold and highly aggressive. It will attack people and other creatures that will flee. The rabies–infected animal loses the ability to swallow, causing its mouth to overflow with infectious saliva. When an infected dog bites a person, the virus will die without infecting anyone. But the human bite–victim often behaves in disturbing and extreme ways. • 30. Personal Narrative: Growing Up As A Kwaj Spartan Growing up as a Kwaj Spartan...what does this mean to me? Having to attend the Kwajalein Jr/Sr High School is a true blessing. As my time at this school is approaching its end, I can't help but to look back on all the special opportunities this school has provided me. A few of these aspects stand out to me. The teachers here at KHS have always been able to provide as much help as needed. Not only have the teachers been a part of my great experience, the students have also made my years here memorable. Even outside of the school, the entire community has made my life on Kwaj an enjoyable experience. All of these factors combined have thoroughly prepared for my next journey to college. The school would not have made such an impact on my education without the accommodating teachers. I have never had trouble finding a teacher to stay after class with me to help me understand anything I struggle with. It's apparent that they truly care about my education and want me to succeed in my future endeavors. Even outside the school itself, they show their support for me and my fellow classmates through things such as extracurricular activities. Whether it was a basketball game, volleyball game, or softball game, I have always seen my teachers in the stands supporting and cheering us on. This is completely unique to Kwaj... Essay on My Technology Integration Vision The coursework I have completed through the Distance Educational Technology Masters Program at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS), has immersed me in educational technology research supported by collegial discussions. Through the supervised field–based activities from the UAS program and my ongoing professional activities, I have developed a shared vision for the comprehensive integration of technology. Now, I strive to create an environment that supports learners with ongoing feedback related to project–based and technology–infused learning experiences. I have used Ron Berger's book titled An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship with Students as a guide for this process. The process of class critiques, as described by Berger, has been especially effective in creating a safe and collaborative learning environment (Berger, 2003). Applying the strategies suggested in my research has helped me manage the change process in my classroom and has given me insight about managing the change process in my school. The complex social and historical foundations of education are rooted in the need to create a population of citizens capable of contributing to the continuing economic and political stability of our nation. First we were an agricultural society, then industrial, and now we are educating students for futures with that are yet unknown (explainvisualthinking, 2007). The new dynamic, created by the recent and rapid expansion of technology driven globalization has created the compelling need for technology infused education in our schools (Friedman, 2005). As an educational technology leader, I collaborate with other educators and families to create technology initiatives that will support educational technology in our schools. • 32. A Brief Note On Iowa Beef Packers ( Ibp ) While America's economy has fluctuated significantly throughout the last century, growth has remained consistent in the meatpacking industry; companies like IBP Inc. reported profits of $198 million on sales of $12.5 billion back in 1997 (Hettena, Seth. 1997). Today, Iowa Beef Packers (IBP) is one of four companies including ConAgra, National Beef and Excel that collectively comprise the meatpacking industry in United States. Excel is a subsidiary of Cargill, which alone controls 85 percent of the market (Gzedit. 2001). Unions, which are in place to prevent workers' rights from being overlooked, now find themselves far removed from the locations of factories owned by these companies, and more undocumented workers are being hired with little to no incentive for change. "Decades ago, meatpacking was centered in labor–friendly urban areas. But the giant stockyards of Chicago, Fort Worth and Kansas City are long gone. The industry built huge plants closer to the livestock–and in right–to–work states where unions are far less popular" (Sharon. 2006). Unions are not providing adequate protection for the workers, and more undocumented workers are being hired, which raises a question: are illegal immigrants taking advantage of the system, or is the system taking advantage of them? Risks and Subsequent Changes The risks associated with working in meatpacking factories have plagued the industry for a long time. • 35. The Wide Spread Of Higher Education Essay Today, colleges and universities have assumed an important role far beyond their role in earlier times. Since the 20th century, economic and social changes have transformed higher education into a primary gateway to the middle–class, providing minorities and women with opportunities to advance against longstanding exclusion from mainstream higher education (Eckel & King, n.d.). Given the change, Americans now view access to higher education as a necessary component of the nation's ideal as a "land of opportunity" (Eckel & King, n.d.). With this recently developed opportunity, jobs have demanded more knowledgeable and well–trained adults with the skills required to practice in a given profession, manage a wide variety of organizations, and complete an increasing proportion of tasks in a more technologically sophisticated economy (Eckel & King, n.d.; Bok, 2015). The wide spread of higher education opportunities has helped to strengthen America's democracy by providing its future leaders knowledge and ideas to create new industries, protect us from disease, preserve and enrich our culture, and inform us about our history, our environment, our society, and ourselves (Bok, 2015). Higher Education Enrollment Higher education in the U.S. has grown to become a vast enterprise comprising some 7,253 colleges and universities, 17.3 million students, 1.5 million faculty and staff members, and aggregate annual expenditures exceeding 515 million dollars (National Center for Education ... I need to focus on one degree at a time, which involves working towards my associate's degree to start with. With the feeling of ambition running through my veins, I am aware that in order to become a criminologist, it takes time. At a rate of two classes per semester, I will be able to attain my bachelor's degree in eight years. I have not been to school in over ten years, therefore, I feel two classes will be my minimum. • 38. Solar and Lunar Eclipes Procrastination is part of the human condition. We avoid what's painful and stay in our comfort zones. That's why we occasionally need a little cosmic kick in the pants to push us off the fence and into action. Eclipses are these agents of change. They fall four to six times a year and turn things upside–down. In our disoriented state, we may act out of character or see turbulence in the world. Eclipses can also help break patterns and shift dynamics. However, most astrologers suggest waiting a week or so before taking drastic action, allowing the eclipse energy to settle first. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes behind the Earth so that the Earth blocks the Sun's rays from striking the Moon. This can occur only when the Sun, ... • 39. Essay On Hawaii Volcanoes Hawaii: Geology's Volcanic Wonder of the World It is well know that Hawaii is very volcanically active and is home to the world's most active volcanoes. Hawaii is unique because the islands are caused by a 'hot spot' in the middle of the Pacific Plate, one of the largest crustal plates on earth. There are only a few 'hot spots' on earth and they occur in an area where the plate is thin and weak creating volcanism, where molten magma ruptures the earth's crust. For Hawaii, the 'hot spot' is under the sea floor, it creates under sea volcanoes. Over millions of years these volcanoes build up to sea level and become islands. As for Hawaii, the Pacific Plate has moved northwest across this 'hot spot' creating what we know today as the Hawaiian Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. In all, ... The world's largest active shield volcano, Mauna Loa, is also located on the Island of Hawaii. Mauna Loa's last eruption was March 24 through April 15, 1984, and has been heavily monitored since 1912 because of its immediate threat to population centers. • 40. Is It Really All About Race? Essay As an American, I have noticed that race is a contributing factor to how the justice system treats many Americans. Growing up as an African American child I was never affected by racial discrimination. I grew in up the suburbs of south Florida and had many friends of all races. As a child, I was raised to judge people by who they are and what they do rather than on the color of their skin. However, when I moved and began high school in a different state I started to notice that many of the students, professors, and even local officers were, for lack of a better word, racist to not only African–Americans but also Hispanics and Middle Easterners. One example of this is the Trayvon Martin case where in the end a man who was clearly guilty was acquitted because of the fact that the suspect who he killed, Trayvon, might have been a "17 year old undisciplined punk thug" who was putting Zimmerman's life in "danger"(Qtd from Sundance). It hurt me to see that as a world we have not learned from our past mistakes. After seeing so many cases of swayed judgment due to racial bias, I wanted to look further into how race affects the judgment of others and if that leads to racial profiling. I found many sources that look at the creation of racial profiling, clear evidence of the occurrence of racial profiling, and how it has affected the lives of the people who are wrongly accused.
