The document discusses various color scheme options for a rock music magazine, including black, red, and white; yellow, blue, white, and black; purple, black, and white; black, red, yellow, and white; black, green, green, and white; and blue, black, white, and blue. It analyzes the symbolism and associations of each color combination in relation to conveying the magazine's rock genre. While some color schemes are rejected for being too associated with other genres, blue, black, white, and blue is ultimately selected for its boldness and ability to convey the magazine's focus on rock without being overly subtle.
2. BLACK, RED, WHITE
These colours are used on the most
famous inidie rock magazine called Q,
it is also repeated on NME, and other
genres of music. It is a classic and
simple colour theme as the red
really is bold and makes it stand out.
In most magazines you would find that
they do used black and white
throughout as they are the consistent
colours, however they are sometimes
not really classed as a colour to the
colour theme. Most magazines do stick
to the three colours for their colour
scheme as black and white are not
counted in this. The red certainly
would give my magazine a hard hitting
edgy and rock feel as red is a
powerful colour which enhances its
fierceness and anger, which is
presented in my genre. However this
colour is definitely over used as it has
also been used a lot in other genre
3. YELLO, BLUE, WHITE, BLACK
The colour theme of this is very
different to what I have seen in
existing magazines. However it
came up to be the most popular in
my questionnaire. I chose the
colour yellow because it was one
of the main colours in which
Kerrang magazine had used for
their brand to be associated with.
Because the three colours of
yellow, black and white and so
familiar if I were to add this in,
then it could infact reinforce my
genre as people would associate
this with Kerrang. I then wanted
to add in another colour to make
it slightly stand out and thought
that blue would be a good choice.
As yellow and blue both contrast
with each other and make the
other stand out. Blue is associated
with the gender male, which is a
4. PURPLE, BLACK, WHITE
These three colours go together
really well, as they are all
dark colours. The purple
represents the power and
royalty with the black and white
on either side would be like good
and evil, pure and dark. I feel if
were to use purple it may give
the wrong impression as not
many rock magazines actually
use the colour purple as their
theme, it is most popular with
the rap and R&B genre. It would
be too much of a pop and girlie
colour to use as the main theme.
I do consider its strong points
5. BLACK, RED, YELLOW, WHITE
Again I have used the colour
red and yellow to trail the
black and white colours.
Because red has already been
a well known popular and
bold colour, by adding a
softer yellow, contrasts
with it making it clash at
times however also standing
out. They go well together
because all four colours
show a hard hitting, bold,
edgy rock theme which
would convey my magazine.
However the colours do seem
6. BLACK, GREEN, GREEN, WHITE
Picking out the colour green does not
seem like a rock kind of colour as it
seen as pretty earthy and to do with
nature. However I have seen it been
used on Kerrang. A lot of magazines
have a three basic colour theme that
is presented throughout the whole
magazine, however on the front
cover there is an additional one
which changed every time depending
on the season or topic.
Green does represent new things and
a fresh start as my magazine is about
new music it could be a metaphor
for that. It is not used in any other
7. BLUE, BLACK, WHITE, BLUE
I then thought about taking away
the yellow and adding different
shades of blue, because I have seen
this been done in previous rock
magazines as it does give off the
vibe I want it to. Espishily as my
issue is dedicated to a band called
the Ocean’s Eyes there will
definitely be a lot of pun in that,
associating it with the ocean and
sea, as well as a special edition
issue. The colours do seem a bit
more water like than rock
however they are strong bold and
show that this magazine is not
anything else but rock. There are
no bright soft colours which oozy
it down and make it subtle, as a
lot of other genres do.
