IKEA is privately owned international home product retailer that sells furniture accessories and
kitchen item in their retail stores around the world. The company which took the initiative furniture
at affordable and cheap prices, is now the world's largest furniture retailer.
IKEA founded by 17 year old Ingvar Kamprad, in Sweden. The company's name is drawn from the
initials of Ingvar Kamprad, Elmtaryd (the farm where he grew up), and Agunnaryd (his hometown
in Småland, southern Sweden). The company is known for modern designs, in various appliances
and furniture, and its interior design work with eco–friendly simplicity. Furthermore, the firm is

Ikea Research Paper
IKEA is founded in Sweden by Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd which is the initials for
IKEA. The company operating in 45 countries all around the world, Ikea is from Sweden and it's not
a coincident that the color of the stores are blue and yellow as the Sweden national flag. I will write
this essay about my experience at the IKEA store in my hometown, Uppsala Sweden. The store is
one of the biggest stores in EU and not that old either so it's a little different from other IKEA store
in other cities nearby. Just want to say how I like the costumer strategy IKEA is using, there markets
in such a way that everything you have at home could improve their products. Their furniture is
adapted simply and quality manner. Their audiences are primarily families, students and newly
married couples because their products cheap and they are very easy to put and build together.
People around here in Sweden is saying that Ikea family is the "Sweden's best home–loving loyalty
club" that is there loyalty program, are you a member of Ikea family gives you more of IKEA and

But of course that I have been at IKEA a couple of times, mostly with my family or girlfriend who
loves IKEA. When the time come to plan the trip to the store it's usually planned 1–2 days ahead,
Ikea store are very big so I feel that people who is traveling to nearest store have cleared there
schedule for at least a couple of hours. In most cities IKEA is in the suburbs and I can by a 15–20
minute drive from the city. In US, people there have Walmart, Target and Amazon, in Sweden, we
doesn't have a lot of big "find everything here stores" so IKEA have a huge influence with home
furniture (Due to good prices) in Sweden and all over

"Trends come and go, but combining a low price with good design and function never goes out of
style" – This quotation tells us a lot about IKEA, a world–wide leading Home Furnishings brand,
which was originated in Smaland, Sweden in 1943. Since then, IKEA has officially opened its stores

Shortages of raw materials
Firms making products that require scare resources face large cost increase. It causes companies like
IKEA to use natural resources in an economical way or to look for recycled resources.
For instances, although water is called infinite resource, it is predicted that by 2030, more than one
in three people all around the World will not have enough water to drink. That is why IKEA's code
of conduct IWAY also includes requirements on water treatment and IKEA managers always support
suppliers to reduce water consumption in manufacturing process.
IKEA believes in using the fewest resources to make the best possible products, without having a
negative impact on their functionality or appearance. b. Increased pollution
Firstly, IKEA has set clear goals to minimize the amount of wastes generated in the manufacturing
process, and if possible use them in the production of other products. Most IKEA stores provide
collection points for customers to return wastes, such as electrical and electronic equipment,
discarded packaging, spent batteries and low–energy bulbs, for recycling. Moreover, IKEA attempts
to repair products rather than simply discarding them. These products are used as spare parts or sold
at reduced prices in specially designated areas of the store.
Secondly, their aim is also to refrain

The, By Vilhelm Moberg
Willie, a mere boy, swelled with superiority as he contemplated the hilarity of those silly old folks,
fooled by an owl and believing in ghosts.4 The belief in the Sinkhole spöke possibly lived on
beyond the sighting of the owl, as old–timers recalled stories of jötunn, the ancient Norse race of
giants, with their powers of shape changing and their inclination for trickery. If they could change
into wolves, as they did in the Norse tales, they certainly could transform into an owl.5 In his two
volume history of the Swedish people, the eminent writer Vilhelm Moberg, relates that during his
childhood in Småland, an isolated and backward province, he met elders that not only believed in
fairies, but actually saw them.6 Willie probably encountered similar mind–sets, since his birth
occurred seven year prior to Vilhelm Moberg's and numerous people from Småland immigrated to
east–central Minnesota.7 Willie normally concluded the telling of the Sinkhole spöke tale with a
prideful proclamation, "My generation was the first modern generation. My generation was the first
not to believe in that stuff."8 Egged on by the allure of the Sinkhole spöke tales and not willing to
be a passive bystander, Willie stepped into the scene alongside the spöke and attempted to harass
and frighten the gullible adults. After capturing fireflies and coated his thumbnails with their natural
luminescent substance, he lurked on the edge of the Sinkhole road waiting for unsuspecting
travelers.

Operations management is not only important for IKEA, but this is important forco most companies.
And this is important for IKEA because the company aims to reduce wastages, increase
productivity, time, and resources management in order to make sure that the production cost is low
and at the stores the company aims to make sure that their warehouse is utilised properly, customers
are explained the details and finally the product is delivered without issues so that the shifting cost
is low. So this indicates that there will be set of operations irrespective of what field a business is in
and at the end of the day successfull businesses are those which manage their operations effectively
and efficiently. Besides, the firm relies significantly on its supply chain, which entails a range of
processes from raw materials acquisition to the delivery of their products to their costumers. The
key operational processes from raw materials acquisition to the delivery of their products to their

organization including costumers' frustations because of overcrowding in its retails stores and
product availability and wait times. Some of the measures that Ikea has implemented to address

Dantes Ikea And Dante's Inferno
Though it can be quite enjoyable to traverse through Ikea showrooms, the experience can be
aggravating for the average consumer. Asa Boxer's poem "Dante's Ikea" demonstrates circumstances
that are found in Ikea that can be a cause of exasperation. The speaker of "Dante's Ikea" mentions
how "there [is] a horde of howling children caged" (Boxer 17–18) within Ikea. The speaker refers to
the children's play area in this store; this section of Ikea is truly a galling place at given times
because children who have been in there for too long become "red–eyed demons" (Boxer 31–32)
with their persistent crying and longing for their parents. In addition to "Dante's Ikea", Canto III of
Dante Alighieri's epic poem "Dante's Inferno" exhibits themes that ... Show more content on

This line creates an image that represents the idea that there are too many people that end up in Hell.
This can be applied to Ikea. Ikea is notorious for its busy atmosphere around holidays such as
Christmas or Black Friday. Those visiting Ikea during these times are alike to the long line of people
mentioned in "Dante's Inferno", as too many of them flood the floors of Ikea stores, making it
difficult to navigate through the store to complete one's purchases. Moreover, the people who are
lined up to go to Hell in "Dante's Inferno" are described to have sorrowful and hopeless expressions
because of their current unpleasant circumstances. During the holidays, the massive influx of people
at Ikea look alike to the people going to Hell– they appear to be "sorrow–laden people" who have
"lost the Good of the intellect" (Alighieri 17–18) when searching for their items. Interacting with
other customers that appear so lost and frustrated can be worrying as a visitor at Ikea. This is due to
the fact that one risks unintentionally pushing them and creating a conflict in order to get to one's
destination within a shorter time

became a good consumer that is why, IKEA plans to open more stores in Russia even with the minor
setback with dealing with the government.
Current Marketing Strategy The strategy of the IKEA group in Russia was to invest in a market
which can give a big profit in a long–term. While the other foreign companies started leaving their
businesses from Russia, Ingvar Kamprad saw a big opportunity there, and started investing in the
Russian market. The result was good, in Ingvar's words: "IKEA becomes the main supplier of home
furniture to the normal Russian families and our sales in Russia will exceed those in our old home
country Sweden" (International Marketing, N. Ghauri & Cateora, 2010). The fact that Ingvar
was the only owner who wanted to keep his company in Russia may give IKEA more power and a
better competitive advantage in the future. The IKEA group sells quality furniture at a low price, to
maintain a strong competitor. For that, the company has to try to cut cost without losing quality in
the products that it sells. IKEA organized their stores in a different way than its competitors. While

Identity Essay : My Cultural Identity
My Cultural Identity My cultural identity stems from my countless brave ancestors that made the
journey to the United States many eons ago. Since then, every generation has impacted our original
customs. As the years passed on, so did behaviors and other tendencies. These have eventually made
their way throughout the entire family tree and down to my generation. Now, as a social work
student, I am forced to face these behaviors head on and even challenge them. Two Stories of

generations to come. Throughout the years, these customs may change slightly, but they still hold
strong ties with the beginnings of the culture. Within the two cultures that I commonly refer to in
my own life, my Swedish customs are more evident in my daily life. However, we do still practice
some of our British heritage, but we don't recognize these things as such. Swedish My family takes
great pride in our Swedish culture, and we often still practice many Swedish customs. The majority
of these customs involve holidays and food. During the month of December, we celebrate St.
Lucia's Day, which honors the first bringing of Christianity to Sweden. Throughout this holiday and
into Christmas, we celebrate by eating traditional Swedish foods like Swedish bologna, rye bread,
lutefisk, and ostkaka. Sometimes at these gettogethers older generations will perform the Seven

realized came from my Swedish culture, is my religion. The Lutheran religion is very common in
Swedish culture, and my church happens to be located in a predominately Swedish

Strategic leadership is the capability to foresee, predict, sustain elasticity, reason tactically and work
with others to introduce transformations that will construct a optimistic outlook for the business.
Visionary leadership creates a progressive look of the forthcoming future that encourages
organizational members and provides a path for upcoming development and target. IKEA has
several leadership styles, starting with autocracy. An autocratic management style is when the
manager sets objectives, assigns staff with task duties, and strongly encourages obedience. The
assessments will mirror the views and behavior of manager, which in turn can project an image of a
confident, well managed business. Democracy is another style that inspires staffs to partake in
democratic management style on behalf of the business decisions. IKEA makes sure that their staff
feedbacks and suggestions are taken into consideration and that the managers can clearly describe
viewpoints, which helps their staffs to work efficiently. The third style is laissez–Faire; this kind of
leadership is when employees get to relax because too much pressure can lead to decline in
efficiency. Finally, IKEA follows paternalistic leadership style, which is attentive to worker
requirements and opinions. Here the managers are concerned about worker contentment and act like

Being one of the leading Companies in Furniture, IKEA offers an extensive variety of decently

The Pestel Analysis Of IKEA
Summary
PESTEL analysis is a method used to study macroeconomics – the macroeconomic environment of
an enterprise. Otherwise, it is called the general segmentation of the environment. It defines the
basic spheres of the environment, which are areas that have a crucial impact on the functioning of

The history of the company is very colorful and interesting. IKEA was founded in 1943 in the south
of Sweden in Smaland. Its founder was seventeen – Ingvar Kamprad. The boy had a great deal of
business, and IKEA was not his first venture. Previously, he was selling matches in his hometown.
His capital for the establishment of IKEA comes from his father, who rewarded him for good
academic performance. He called his company IKEA from the first letters of his name, and the
names of the family farm and the village Agunnaryd Elmtaryd. The company initially dealt with the
sale of feathers, frames, wallets, tablecloths, watches, jewelry, stockings and fine furniture.

His forebears on his father's side of the family resided in southern Sweden and those on his mother's

geographic center of the country is generally considered northern Sweden.2 The earliest known

of Ångermanland and Medelpad, its eastern border lies on the Gulf of Bothnia, and it shares its
western border with the eastern border of Jämtland.10 In contrast to much of the rest of Sweden,
with its predominately agricultural economic base, the timber industry anchors the Västernorrland
economy.11 Even if conflicts in the place of birth remain irreconcilable, perhaps the Engström's
temporary moved to Bålsjö so that Olof could earn the fare for passage to America by working in
the timber industry. Although purely speculative, this sequence of events is conceivable. Bålsjö's
close proximity to the port of Härnösand, a possible point of embarkation for America, supports this
conjecture. Regardless of the credibility of the explanation of events leading to their departure; Olof,
Anna, and their three children immigrated to America. After arriving on the eastern seaboard of
North America the family probably traveled by rail all the way to the emerging community of
Harris, Chisago County, Minnesota, where they settled on a farm one–half mile east of the town.
Subsequent to and a likely consequence of the immigration, the surname Engström became the
anglicized version Engstrom. Olof's ability to obtain land so close to town suggests that the
Engstroms arrived in Harris shortly after the completion of the Lake Superior and Mississippi rail
line in 1870, which passed through the future site of Harris on its route between St. Paul, Minnesota
and Duluth,

The Business Functions Of IKEA
IKEA was founded in Sweden by Ingvar Kamprad in 1943. IKEA has been established around the
world in 26 different countries. Within these countries IKEA has a total of 303 stores. This business
is effective in adapting to change through the use of the four key business functions; operations,

IKEA has adapted to the operations function of a business. This function is the main function of
every company. This key function, of which IKEA has adapted to, is the business function
responsible for managing the process of creation of goods and services. The operations function is
responsible for organising, coordinating, planning, and controlling the resources that are required in
the production of goods and services. IKEA has effectively implemented this function by
understanding the needs of customers. In particular, this applies to those who have a lower income,
and/or, limited space. IKEA's employees within the product design and product development
departments, focus directly on the price and quality, as well as the design and function of products.
Elements of the design are typically agreed on within the factory itself, this is where manufacturers

One building, circular in shape, had four floors connected ingeniously so that customers could move
easily from floor to floor. This building acted as the main display area for furniture. The second
building consisted of three floors and a basement and acted as the stockroom and service unit, where
there was also a selling area for smaller pieces of furniture and home furnishings. Customer services
ranged from a baby carriage hire service, a children 's nursery, and a restaurant with seating for 350,
to cloakrooms, toilets, a bank, and parking for 1,000 cars. More important than the physical
characteristics of the new IKEA store was the manner in which it revolutionized furniture
manufacturing and selling. Kamprad continued the practice of selling most furniture in flat–pack
form, as he said, "to avoid transporting and storing air." To make this possible, the furniture was
specially designed by IKEA staff in workshops in the Älmhult headquarters and warehouse. For the
mass production of the component parts of the flat–pack furniture, Kamprad had to bypass
traditional furniture manufacturers and instead use specialist factories. Unfinished pine shelving, for
example, came directly from saw mills, cabinet doors were made in door factories, metal frames
came from machine shops, and upholstery materials came directly from textile mills. Almost all of
the components of each piece of furniture could be

Ikea Essay
Introduction:
IKEA is a unique Swedish furniture company. The company we so widely recognize today for
selling good quality budget friendly Scandinavian style furniture began in 1943 as merely selling
pens picture frames and wallets. Ikea was founded by a then 17year old Ivor Kampard, of the farm
Elmtaryd near the small village of Agunnard in Smaland, hence giving rise to the name IKEA. This
area is know for its thrifty and hard working ethos and Kampard very much incorporated this into
his business venture. His innovative idea was to offer home furnishing products of good function
and design at prices much lower than competitors by simply using cost–cutting solutions that did
not affect the quality of products.

Although several barriers I identified many factors and opportunities for IKEA to enter the chinese

Political: IKEA entered the Chinese market in 1998, which marked the 20th year anniversary of the
host country's "reform and open" policy.
The economic reform allowed the economy to become market orientated, and thus many
international companies including IKEA, Microsoft and intel seized the opportunity to break into
the vast consumer market. As stated earlier, by law IKEA were required to enter the market by joint
venture and rented land in Shanghai from the government for their first store. However after China
joined the World Trade Organisation in 2003 and the government allowed foreign retailers to
establish wholly owned subsideries, IKEA bought the remaining shares from their partners and
gained ownership of the store and expanded even

However, in practice, the president of Egypt wields much more power than the prime minister as he
heads the executive branch to which the constitution grants wider powers. Mubarak is considered to
be one of the most powerful leaders in the region. Mubarak is most likely to win another

Nielsen 's 7th Heuristic : Flexibility And Efficiency Of Use
Part 1 – Jakob Nielsen's 7th Heuristic: "Flexibility and Efficiency of Use"
The Human–computer interaction (HCI) has evolved through the years, which has set the stage for
users to participate in the interaction design process. With the participation of end users,
corporations have listened to their issues and concerns in developing a user friendly product to
accommodate most, if not all of their preferences and suggestions. This paper will define and
discuss the Human–computer interaction (HCI), Jakob Nielson's 7th heuristic, and introduce three
interactive items correlating between the two. Applying the HCI and Neilson's first heuristic with
the three interactive items from the user's point of view and experience will produce an applicable
feedback to focus on further development of future components of similar stature.
The Jakob Nielsen's 7th heuristic is "flexibility and efficiency of use". Accelerators –– unseen by the
novice user –– may often speed up the interaction for the expert user such that the system can cater
to both inexperienced and experienced users. Allow users to tailor frequent actions (Nielsen, J.
1995). In retrospect novice and expert users use systems in a slightly differently, receive the same
results. Therefore, the system should be easy and efficient to use by both novices and experts alike.
Systems provide "accelerators" for expert users to proficiently navigate the applications to complete
the most recurrent tasks. An example of accelerators can

The Emigrants is a film following the story of a Swedish family who falls on challenging times
when immigrating to America. The Nilsson family originates from Sweden, resonated from their

Nilsson family and a small group of the Swedish religious group in the same town. The Emigrants
illustrates the clash between American ideals and Swedish traditions which were created from
Swedish viewpoint and for a Swedish audience. The two ideals compete throughout the movie
through the religious conflict between the Swedish religious group and the state church.
Furthermore, the class differences between America and Sweden, the economic atmosphere, and the
fertility rates of Sweden cause the Nilsson family to migrate. The religious differences between the
Swedish church and the American church include the two vastly different origins and the differences
of liberality. The Swedish town of Ljuder in Småland has a religious stronghold that dominates the
small town, which pushes the residents to migrate to America. On the other hand, Americans had the
Quakers society who were persecuted by the Catholic church and later fled to America for religious
freedom. The townspeople left in hopes of having a less of a ruling church, so they could practice

Ikea Case Study
Case Assignment #2: Ikea
1. How was Ikea successful in entering the furniture retailing market in Sweden?
Ikea was successful in entering the furniture retail market in Sweden because it capitalized on good
timing and original ideas. At the time of Ikeas initial phases, furniture prices in Sweden rose 41%
faster than other household goods between 1935 and 1946. Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Ikea
Saw this as a great opportunity to offer quality furniture at a much lower price than other retailers,
that the majority of people can actually afford. Ikea was also able to overcome adversity through
creativity in business processes. When initially traditional retailers fought against Ikea's ideas and
banned them from selling at the Stockholm Trade Fair, the took orders or got names of customers in
order to sell to them after the event. On another occasion, they overcame trouble with the retail
cartel by establishing manufacturing sources in Poland instead of Sweden. This actually resulted in
lower costs for Ikea and therefore allowed them to sell products at even lower prices than before.
They also differentiated themselves from other companies not only through price but also through
store design and location. Instead of locating in downtown hubs, Ikea set up its stores in areas with a
lot of land to provide ample parking space which went hand in hand with their concept of cash–and–
carry retailing. Furthermore, within the stores established many basic practices, such as wide

Ingvar Kamprad: Wealthy Man, Frugal Man, Entrepreneur Extraordinaire
Although octogenarian Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Swedish–based IKEA, is one of the
wealthiest individuals in the world, he nonetheless lives quite frugally. Kamprad avoids wearing
suits, flies economy class, takes the subway to work, drives a ten–year–old Volvo and frequents
inexpensive restaurants. "It has long been rumored in Sweden that when his self–discipline fails and
he drinks an overpriced Coke out of a hotel minibar, he will go to a grocery store to buy a
replacement."
Kamprad was "born in Småland in the south of Sweden a region known as home to many
entrepreneurs and hard–working people, who are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As head of the "family business," Kamprad, like many fathers, leads by example. As Kamprad says:
" 'If there is such a thing as good leadership, it is to give a good example' and 'I have to do so for all
the IKEA employees.' " Kamprad firmly believes that the best example he can provide for his
employees is to work hard and adhere to strict business ethics.
Another characteristic of Kamprad's leadership approach is a willingness to admit his mistakes and
own up to his weaknesses. Even with his long career and extraordinary success with IKEA,
Kamprad had his share of challenges. "As IKEA grew, so did Kamprad's problems alcoholism,
allegations of a Nazi past, deaths at a store opening but nothing deflected him." Kamprad describes
"his association with the 'new Swedish' wartime pro–Nazi party [as] 'the greatest mistake of my life.'
" The manner in which Kamprad dealt with the revelation of his involvement with the Swedish pro–
Nazi party helped people to "fully accept him as a leader. By showing human weaknesses rather
than only strengths, his employees and the general public could relate to him and learn from his
behavior. The episode also [shows] that Ingvar Kamprad is a leader who really impacts the people
around him in an inspirational and

The company operating in 45 countries all around the world, Ikea is from Sweden and it's not a coincident that the color of the stores are blue and yellow as the Sweden national flag. I will write this essay about my experience at the IKEA store in my hometown, Uppsala Sweden. The store is one of the biggest stores in EU and not that old either so it's a little different from other IKEA store in other cities nearby. Just want to say how I like the costumer strategy IKEA is using, there markets in such a way that everything you have at home could improve their products. Their furniture is adapted simply and quality manner. Their audiences are primarily families, students and newly married couples because their products cheap and they are very easy to put and build together. Shortages of raw materials Firms making products that require scare resources face large cost increase. It causes companies like IKEA to use natural resources in an economical way or to look for recycled resources. For instances, although water is called infinite resource, it is predicted that by 2030, more than one in three people all around the World will not have enough water to drink. That is why IKEA's code of conduct IWAY also includes requirements on water treatment and IKEA managers always support suppliers to reduce water consumption in manufacturing process. The, By Vilhelm Moberg Willie, a mere boy, swelled with superiority as he contemplated the hilarity of those silly old folks, fooled by an owl and believing in ghosts.4 The belief in the Sinkhole spöke possibly lived on beyond the sighting of the owl, as old–timers recalled stories of jötunn, the ancient Norse race of giants, with their powers of shape changing and their inclination for trickery. If they could change into wolves, as they did in the Norse tales, they certainly could transform into an owl.5 In his two volume history of the Swedish people, the eminent writer Vilhelm Moberg, relates that during his childhood in Småland, an isolated and backward province, he met elders that not only believed in fairies, but actually saw them.6 Willie probably encountered similar mind–sets, since his birth occurred seven year prior to Vilhelm Moberg's and numerous people from Småland immigrated to east–central Minnesota.7 Willie normally concluded the telling of the Sinkhole spöke tale with a prideful proclamation, "My generation was the first modern generation. My generation was the first not to believe in that stuff."8 Egged on by the allure of the Sinkhole spöke tales and not willing to be a passive bystander, Willie stepped into the scene alongside the spöke and attempted to harass and frighten the gullible adults. After capturing fireflies and coated his thumbnails with their natural luminescent substance, he lurked on the edge of the Sinkhole road waiting for unsuspecting travelers. ... Asa Boxer's poem "Dante's Ikea" demonstrates circumstances that are found in Ikea that can be a cause of exasperation. The speaker of "Dante's Ikea" mentions how "there [is] a horde of howling children caged" (Boxer 17–18) within Ikea. The speaker refers to the children's play area in this store; this section of Ikea is truly a galling place at given times because children who have been in there for too long become "red–eyed demons" (Boxer 31–32) with their persistent crying and longing for their parents. Ikea is notorious for its busy atmosphere around holidays such as Christmas or Black Friday. Those visiting Ikea during these times are alike to the long line of people mentioned in "Dante's Inferno", as too many of them flood the floors of Ikea stores, making it difficult to navigate through the store to complete one's purchases. Moreover, the people who are lined up to go to Hell in "Dante's Inferno" are described to have sorrowful and hopeless expressions because of their current unpleasant circumstances. During the holidays, the massive influx of people at Ikea look alike to the people going to Hell– they appear to be "sorrow–laden people" who have "lost the Good of the intellect" (Alighieri 17–18) when searching for their items. While the other foreign companies started leaving their businesses from Russia, Ingvar Kamprad saw a big opportunity there, and started investing in the Russian market. The result was good, in Ingvar's words: "IKEA becomes the main supplier of home furniture to the normal Russian families and our sales in Russia will exceed those in our old home country Sweden" (International Marketing, N. Ghauri & Cateora, 2010). The fact that Ingvar was the only owner who wanted to keep his company in Russia may give IKEA more power and a better competitive advantage in the future. The IKEA group sells quality furniture at a low price, to maintain a strong competitor. For that, the company has to try to cut cost without losing quality in the products that it sells. Nielsen 's 7th Heuristic : Flexibility And Efficiency Of Use Part 1 – Jakob Nielsen's 7th Heuristic: "Flexibility and Efficiency of Use" The Human–computer interaction (HCI) has evolved through the years, which has set the stage for users to participate in the interaction design process. With the participation of end users, corporations have listened to their issues and concerns in developing a user friendly product to accommodate most, if not all of their preferences and suggestions. This paper will define and discuss the Human–computer interaction (HCI), Jakob Nielson's 7th heuristic, and introduce three interactive items correlating between the two. Applying the HCI and Neilson's first heuristic with the three interactive items from the user's point of view and experience will produce an applicable feedback to focus on further development of future components of similar stature. The Jakob Nielsen's 7th heuristic is "flexibility and efficiency of use". Accelerators –– unseen by the novice user –– may often speed up the interaction for the expert user such that the system can cater to both inexperienced and experienced users. Allow users to tailor frequent actions (Nielsen, J. 1995). In retrospect novice and expert users use systems in a slightly differently, receive the same results. Therefore, the system should be easy and efficient to use by both novices and experts alike. • 42. Ikea Case Study Case Assignment #2: Ikea 1. How was Ikea successful in entering the furniture retailing market in Sweden? Ikea was successful in entering the furniture retail market in Sweden because it capitalized on good timing and original ideas. At the time of Ikeas initial phases, furniture prices in Sweden rose 41% faster than other household goods between 1935 and 1946. Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of Ikea Saw this as a great opportunity to offer quality furniture at a much lower price than other retailers, that the majority of people can actually afford. Ikea was also able to overcome adversity through creativity in business processes. When initially traditional retailers fought against Ikea's ideas and banned them from selling at the Stockholm Trade Fair, the took orders or got names of customers in order to sell to them after the event. On another occasion, they overcame trouble with the retail cartel by establishing manufacturing sources in Poland instead of Sweden. This actually resulted in lower costs for Ikea and therefore allowed them to sell products at even lower prices than before. They also differentiated themselves from other companies not only through price but also through store design and location. Instead of locating in downtown hubs, Ikea set up its stores in areas with a lot of land to provide ample parking space which went hand in hand with their concept of cash–and– carry retailing.
