Final Project – Could Facebook Data Leak Be Turning Point In Privacy Debate?
2018
Now for the down and dirty on the final project, which I know you are just salivating to get your hands on!
1
Introduction
Well, what I am going to do here is go over the case study that we will be working on the entire semester. Don’t get too upset just yet, we will break this case study down into six components that will be handed in over the course of the semester. At the end of the semester you will compile the document for a final grade – if you don’t compile it for me, then I will average all the components for a final grade.
2
What I Expect.
Use material & ideas presented within the constructs of this course
Use research take a stance on the on the articles presented in the case study
Answer the question: Was it moral, ethical and legal for former Facebook to share personal data of US citizens?
Identify, discuss and reflect on the conflict of ethical, moral and legal issues associated with current US practices of data sharing and selling.
Provide adequate background on the relevant issues
Okay, in the case study document, I given you two articles to read over to get you started on the privacy issues regarding Facebook and Cambridge Analytica; these articles should be your jumping off point for the development of your paper. You can actually use them in your references, but they will not count towards the 10 articles that you need present to qualify for an A for the assignment.
What I want you to do is to take the material that we have gone over in this course and apply it to the Facebook case study. Your job is to decide whether it was ethical, moral and legal for Facebook to provide Cambridge Aanalytica with the end user's personal data.
You need to take a stance on the sharing of user’s personal data taken by Facebook. There are a multitude of stances you can take, but remember, Facebook cannot be both ethical and unethical; moral and immoral; or legal and illegal, but their actions could be found to be a combination of all three aspects in your paper eg., they could be found moral, but unethical and legal. I want you to look at and examine the legal, the moral and the ethical issues associated with this case. Do some research on the background privacy issues as garenteed under the constitution and bill of rights; what are the legal statues on the use or sharing/selling of personal data. Tell me how you handle the current situation and what policies you might recommend for the government to implement in the future or for Facebook to use.

Violation of Expectation of Privacy – Fourth Amendment in the

Were there violations as defined by the Federal Trade

Develop a conclusion on your stance
Develop a response to how you would proceed

personal data
Develop a plan or policy on how to avoid this issue in the future
Identify cultural impact and consequences that may be the
ramification of this surveillance in the future.
I want you to explore all relevant issues even more issues than
I have presented here. Look at government's policy, The Federal
Trade Commission Act. Did Facebook
Over step their authority by sharing the end user’s personal
information? Was Facebook in violation
of protecting United States Citizen’s expectation or right to
privacy.
Are there any constitutional or legal violations here?
Did this company sided step moral, ethical and legal concerns?
What about security issues in regards to the use of information
resulting from
sharing of this information with a third party, the Trump
campaign?
What is your prediction for the future? Do you see any changes
that need
to be implemented, if so what do you recommend and why?
4. Take your research and develop a stance and come up with a
conclusion.
Develop a response of how you would proceed in preventing the
this crisis for
Facebook and similar entiites in the future. How would you
handle request
for personal data in the future – would you implement new
policy or follow
existing protocol or a combination of both . Develop a strategic
plan of what you would do for the future – of what you
would do to prevent this crisis in the future. Ultimately, how is
going to impact the culture within the social media
community overall? What are your predictions? I want to know
your
ideas, there is no right or wrong approach, because ethical
practices
are an ongoing/evolving ideas that develops over time.

This is probably the most important slide in this PowerPoint
for you – this has a date for when everything is due.
NOTE that I have a link to an Annotated bibliography, this
will take you out to the Perdue Owl web site. This is a very
good web site that will teach you how to write in APA format,
which is our standard writing format in the IT industry.
The document is broken down into 6 components that are
submitted and graded. If you are happy with your grades you
do not have to do any rewrites, and I’ll will average the
grades together and that will be the final grade on the paper.
However you can do rewrite. As you do rewrites the previous
grade goes away as if it never existed. If you still are
working on rewrites by the end of the courses; on December
8th you can submit the entire
document and I will read it and grade it and that will be
your grade for this portion of the course.

General Info about the Paper
a 7 to 10 page, double spaced document, with supporting
documentation and created in APA style using the following
criteria:
Font: times roman size 12
1” margins
Double spaced everything – even citations
Reference page
6. The body of your document should be 7 to 10 pages long. That
does not include your reference pages. The first item you are
going to submit is your Annotated bibliography – please follow
the link presented in this PowerPoint on APA style Annotated
Bibliographies.
The second item is the introduction/hypothesis of your paper.
The introduction is not an Abstract; it is one or two paragraphs
providing a background on the case.
The font you will be using is Time Roman or Times New Roman
size 12, doubled spaced – even citations and I do check for
these things. One inch margins all around and I check for this.
There is a required reference page, which is to be in APA
format – that is why I strongly suggest that you use Word,
because it will do the formatting of all references and citations
for you .
I have put the links on the slides to the sites that I think will be
helpful in developing your paper and using word. On this page
I have put the link on to the APA style page that link to Owl’s
website. I have had a number of students tell me they like the
Owl’s websites.

Annotated Bibliography
In the Annotated Bibliography rubric I will be evaluating six (6)
key areas –
the selection of your source is appropriate for the topic, e.g. if
you have a
blog, don’t cite your blog as a source (You may think this is
funny,
but it has be tried in other courses that I have taught.). I will be
evaluating
the credibility of the sources and your annotations. In your
annotations I
will look at your description of the relevance of the article to
the topic.
Under the relevance I will be expecting you to explain how you
10. plan to
use this article in your document. Under Assignment criterion, I
will
examine how well you format the reference in APA style.
Finally, I will
valuating your use of grammar, and general good writing
principals.

Based on this rubric – I am looking for a theme statement for
the opening paragraph of your document. This paragraph
should provide an introduction to the background behind this
11. case and needs to be presented in an logical order. This
paragraph(s) should provide a good transition point to your
argument, which will be formally presented in your Explanatory
paragraph. Finally, I am looking for good grammar, spelling,
and general writing skills.
10
Hypothesis
In your hypothesis/explanatory paragraph, I am looking for the
stance you are taking on Facebook and the sharing of the end
user’s personal data with Cambridge Analytica. Explain how
you will approach the subject and defend your stance. Note: you
should identify at least three (3) points you plan to present to
defend your stance for or against Facebook.
11
When I do the evaluation of the writing, I will take each section
of the document and evaluate it accordingly base on the
structure that should be find there, the content of information
that should be there and whether it is well developed, the
mechanics of the writing – spelling, punctuation, and
paragraphing and the research that has gone into it. Do you
have sources identified for the document?
12
12. On the critical reasoning portion of the document (the third tab
in the Excel file) I look at how well you analyze the document
that you have written. How much thought have you put into it.
Do you back up your ideas? Have you got supporting evidence?
Can you back it up with your thoughts and research? Is it
articulated correctly? Does it make sense? Is it reasonable?
Are you putting forth a logical argument – no matter what side
you choose?
13
Used in Body, Legal Rubric
In both the legal background and body sections of the document
I use an expanded rubric for the review of your writing.
In both sections I will look at your writing skills and the logic
and creativity presentation of your idea used in your
writing, through the use of Writing and Critical Reasoning
Rubrics. However, in the legal
background section, I have set some parameters in the type and
degree of development I expect you to
demonstrate in your writing by including an additional rubric
called Content.
