 A SWOT analysis guides you to identify the positives and
negatives inside your organization (Strength & Weakness)
and outside of it, in the external environment
(Opportunity & Threat).
 Developing a full awareness of your situation can help
with both strategic planning and decision -making.
WHAT IS SWOT FOR?
 It measures a functional unit, a proposition or idea.
 There are internal factors
 strengths and weaknesses from internal factors
 opportunities & threats from external factors
 It helps in decision making how the organization may use its strengths
and opportunities to overcome weaknesses and threats.

For the external scan the planners have to identify and evaluate the
Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental and Political
factors (STEEP) in the environment outside the organisation,
which affect its success or survival.
i) Social factors : Demographics, Participation of Women,
Opportunities and access to training for disadvantaged people.
ii) Technological factors : Impact of automation, Modern
communication technologies, Microprocessor etc.
EXTERNAL SCAN
i. Economic factors : LPG of Economy, Development of specific industries, Unemployment and
Underemployment, Development of Entrepreneurs etc.
ii. Environmental factors : Depletion of Natural resources, Environmental sustainability,
Pollution control, Energy consumption, Regulations of World Trade Organisation.
iii. Political factors : Legislation affecting education and training, Control of Curriculum, Budgets
and Teacher qualification, Degree of central versus local control etc.
AIM
 SWOT analysis can help in turning weaknesses and threats into opportunities, and ultimately
into strengths.

 Suitable for conducting confidential written survey on large numbers such as
students.

 Suitable for small number of powerful individuals.
 Observation Schedules
 Suitable for assessing (i) the infrastructural facilities and the maintenance and (ii)
the various organisational processes like Teaching-learning, Student services etc.

EXTERNAL SCAN For the external scan the planners have to identify and evaluate the Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental and Political factors (STEEP) in the environment outside the organisation, which affect its success or survival. i) Social factors : Demographics, Participation of Women, Opportunities and access to training for disadvantaged people. ii) Technological factors : Impact of automation, Modern communication technologies, Microprocessor etc.

Environmental factors : Depletion of Natural resources, Environmental sustainability, Pollution control, Energy consumption, Regulations of World Trade Organisation. iii. Political factors : Legislation affecting education and training, Control of Curriculum, Budgets and Teacher qualification, Degree of central versus local control etc.
