Critically evaluate the concepts of professionalism and accountability in lls and process of
evaluation, quality assurance and quality improvement. Provide clear definitions of these key issues
and how they affect the teacher.
Comment on different documents on professionalism and what they have to offer. Identify and
comment on key issues of professionalism conduct and accountability in the life long sector.
Professional identity, according to Bucher and Sterling, (1977), is defined by ones skills and

They ensure that student teachers acquire a dual professionalism, learning from a subject specific
mentor and guidance from Tutors from their course. This benefits the teachers and ensures they are
prepared, not only with the subject knowledge, but how to deliver it to others.
Attaining QTLS status not only gives you a teaching qualification but it also ensures those who have
such status continue to develop both their teaching and their subject specialism through guidance,
support and other CPD activities within the work place. It also make certain that teachers are
accountable for their own skills and actions in the classroom, which in turn would offer them more
autonomy within their professional lives. By developing and enforcing professional standards within

Quality Improvement Analysis
From the article we read about Toyota I loved the quote; "You can't solve problems unless you admit
them" (Fishman, 2006). To me this is what quality improvement is all about. I would apply
principles of quality improvement in my current practice a few different ways. First, I would look at
the big picture. What needs to be changed? How can I take better care of my patients? After
answering these questions implementing new techniques would need to occur. Lastly, I would make
sure that my team and myself were all on the same page. Every team member needs to know what is
going on and the objectives we are trying to meet in the long run. "At Toyota, there is a presumption
of imperfection. Perfection is a fine goal, but improvement is much more realistic, much more
human" (Fisher, 2006). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If I were to apply our design of quality improvement to where I plan on working using Roger's
Diffusion of Innovation Theory I would use his five elements to help me along. "According to
Rogers there are five elements of a new or substitute clinical behaviour that will each partly
determine whether adoption or diffusion of a new activity will occur: relative advantage,
compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability" (Sanson–Fisher, 2004). Michelle and I
decided hiring new nurses and using existing float nurses would improve compliance rates because
there would be a smaller patient to nurse ratio. Before applying our design I would take Roger's five
elements into consideration when approaching staff about a quality improvement project because
ultimately how well the design works is based off staff accomplishment. This approach is
compatible to current unit needs and can be easily adopted. We plan to do an audit quarterly to see if
our new approach is improving compliance rates on the unit and is meeting the Joint Commissions

Evaluation Of A Quality Improvement Plan
The successful aspect of this quality improvement plan was staff compliance to the checklist and
selected EBP interventions. Collaboration with high management to improve quality and nurse
performance lead to a developed system with the changing needs of performance improvement
initiatives. The project keeps surgical knowledge up to date and relevant with the support from the
staff and managers. The ability to provide feedback during huddle meeting intiated open
communication. The quality management team reported the data that led the direction for
implementing the quality checklist. Firstly, the nurse inclusion for routine surgical practice resulted
in effective compliance, as every nurse was able to accomplish all the EBP standards on the surgical
checklist. This enhanced a nurse buy in for efficient surgical patient care. The process worked due to
agreement and helpfulness from all stakeholders. Secondly, nurses appreciated the training and
additional education needed to become compliant for SSI reduction. This assisted in refreshing the
knowledge of surgical information for seasoned and new nurses. Some nurses used the education
session to accomplish their performance evaluation process. Thirdly, collaboration improves sharing
of information between the nurses, surgeons and high management. Furthermore, increasing
communication between the nurses, patients, and their family who then reported increased
satisfaction with the surgical care. Lastly, the monitoring,

Evaluating The Quality Improvement Initiative And...
The Evaluation Plan Many different conceptual models exist for evaluating a process. An evaluation
is a necessary step to determine how well a process is working and if the targets are being met. The
measurements in a quality improvement project are important to assess where the organization
stands with the project, and to determine success of the project (Sadeghi, Barzi, Mikhail, & Shabot,
2013). There are both financial performance metrics and quality performance metrics that are used
in healthcare to determine success. The purpose of this paper is to propose on outline for evaluating
the quality improvement initiative and financial implications, along with giving a description of
specific metrics. A recommendation will be discussed as to how the organization can represent the
data related to the quality improvement issue for ongoing monitoring. Also, there will be an
explanation of how the organization can create an integrated view of performance that links finance
and quality.
Methods for Evaluating
To improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care, applying research and
evidence–based practice is necessary. In the Institute of Medicine's report, Keeping Patient Safe:
Transforming the Work Environment of Nurses, there is an emphasis on adequate nurse staffing
(Hickey & Brosnan, 2012). Therefore, the quality improvement initiative is to focus on closing the
gap between the core staffing and actual staffing in a six–week schedule.

Continual Improvement (Total Quality Management)
1. Introduction Statistical process control refers to a statistical method used to separate variation

possible to eliminate the special causes and to establish and maintain consistency in the process,
allowing the process to be improved. A Process refers to everything that is done in a workplace.
Multiple factors affect these processes and they are usually refered to as the Five M's. The Five M's

Quality Improvement
First of all, what is quality improvement? Quality Improvement (QI) has being define by the
Institute of Medicine (IOM) the way to which patient care services increase the possibility of
desired health outcomes and are consistent with the professional knowledge. "The roots of the
quality improvement movement can be traced back to the work of epic figures such as Ignaz
Semmelweis, the 19th–century obstetrician who championed the importance of hand washing in
medical care. In addition, Florence Nightingale, the English nurse, identified the association
between poor living conditions and high death rates among soldiers treated at army hospitals. Ernest

Senior leadership must determine and direct the level of quality that is acceptable within the
organization. Leadership should prioritize areas of quality and use data based on benchmarks from

must be monitored for quality. Compliance must be followed by leaders and all employees within an
organization and it is up to health care administrators to enforce these regulations. Compliance is
mandatory and required regulatory agencies and will be discussed in the next section. Core
measures are established when treating and assessing patients. Dlugacz

Key Influences On The Quality Improvement Accreditation...
This essay will introduce five key influences on the establishing of education and care settings in
Australia, the similarities and differences between the Quality Improvement Accreditation System
and the current National Quality Framework.
Maybanke Anderson and Lillian de Lissa as well as other people were pioneer who led the
movement to early childhood education and care in Australia (OEDC,2000). Educational thinkers
including Froebel and Pestalozzi and the associated development of preschool movements in Europe
and America had significantly influence on Australia by the end of the 1890s (ibid.).
During this period, there were some cost free preschools mainly accompany with private schools for
the girls of affluent families, whereas children from middle–class families were less likely to access
to these services( ibid.). In order to arrange children who often roaming the streets, a philanthropic
kindergarten movement emerged in 1895 with the constitution of the Kindergarten Union of New
South Wales, it suggested that the introduction of kindergarten principles into schools and free–
charging preschools should establish in poor area (ibid.). Furthermore, the Day Nursery movement
emerged in 1900 for the sake of the employed mothers from the working class who had
difficulty(ibid.).
The Child Care Act 1972 is one of the important influences on the establishing of education and
care settings in Australia as it is recognized as the start of the Commonwealth government's

Continuous Quality Improvement
Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is a topic that is taught from the beginning of nursing
school. "Continuous quality improvement is an approach to improving quality on a continuing
basis" (Pozgar & Santucci, 2015, p. 549). It is called continuous quality improvement because we
will always have room for improvement throughout the healthcare system. "Continuous quality
improvement involves improving performance at every functional level of an organization's
operation, using all available resources (human and capital)" (Pozgar & Santucci, 2015, p. 549).
Continuous quality improvement is so important because it involves everyone. "It combines
fundamental management techniques, innovative improvement efforts, and specialized technical

Application Of Quality Improvement Methodologies
This literary piece is a systematic review of the application of quality improvement methodologies.
The goal of the paper is to identify and evaluate the utilization and effectiveness of quality
improvement methods in the surgical field. The search identified thirty–four articles with nine
studies describing continuous quality improvement (CQI). Five Six Sigma, five total quality
management (TQM), five Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles, five statistical process control (SPC),
four Lean and one Lean Six Sigma with 20 studies from the USA. The most common objectives of
the papers were to improve outcomes, reduce infections and delays in care. Quality improvement
methodologies from the manufacturing industry could be the key to improving the quality of care in
surgery and reducing costs. The Lean methods have been applied to different aspects of healthcare
successfully but the processes that are repetitive and can be standardized benefit the most. Many of
the quality improvement methods have overlapping elements. The SPC and PDSA are standard for
CQI, TQM, Six Sigma and some Lean programs. Several of these methods require considerable data
collection and teammate training in the application and data analysis. Therefore, the cost to
implement and maintain may be an issue but without an investment of some sort in these projects to
begin there will be no evidence to determine the effectiveness of each method before widespread
utilization. This study was not able to make

Hospital Quality Improvement (West Florida Regional...
Introduction
West Florida Regional Medical center (WFRMC) is located on the north side of Pensacola, Florida.
It is associated with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), and "the West Florida Healthcare
campus includes the all private room acute care hospital, the area's only comprehensive physical
rehabilitation hospital, and a mental health facility" (West Florida Hospital, 2010). When looking at
the decision to invest heavily into total quality management (TQM), you must look at its history and
hospital statistics of the Pensacola area. In 1992, there was intense competition between WFRMC
and the other two hospitals within the area, Sacred Heart and Baptist Hospitals (McLaughlin &
Kaluzny, 2006). "The 130 doctors practicing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As previously stated the strengths of TQM allow a complete investigation in areas that are not
running efficiently and effectively. By providing a method of improvement such as this ensures that
a higher quality service is being given, a workforce is on the same page and focused at all levels,
and customer satisfaction is met. In the end this would allow the WFRMC to be more profitable.
The weakness behind TQM would be similar to any field and that is cost. What any company would
discover is that there is an initial increase in cost, whether it is for a service or for production. This
cost would consist of training personal and cost of finding feedback methods of the business quality.
When looking at maintaining a CQI staff at WFRMC, it was apparent that it was maintained with a
limited number of members (McLaughlin & Kaluzny, 2006). "The only program employee was Ms.
Bette Gulsby, M.Ed., Director of Quality Improvement Resources, who served as staff and coach to
Mr. Kausch and as a member of the quality improvement council. Corporate influences to assist in
the hospital efforts consisted of providing staffing for QIP. "The mentor was provided by
headquarters staff, and in the case of WFRMC was Dr. Batalden" (p.525). The corporate

This will lead to a decreased down time of equipment.
Quality Management Tool Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) would be a good tool for
collecting and presenting data on this process. An FMEA is a process that helps to identify the
possible failure modes of a process or product. This determines the effect on related sub–items and
on the function of the product or process (Enterprise Solutions Competency Center, 2006).
Improvement Opportunities An FMEA would show how all the pieces of the process effects the
other pieces of the process. The analysis would show how the data tracking of the meter readings
would benefit the maintenance process and allow for predictive measures and forecasting. The
tracking of the meter readings allows for a predictive maintenance schedule to be produced and
followed. Once on a predictive maintenance schedule, equipment is taken care of and remains in
operating condition. A maintenance schedule also helps to retain the resale value of equipment. By
having a predictive mode and forecasting repairs, much last minute scrambling and money will be
saved.
Proposed Improvements The new process would go as follows.
• Meter readings are to be taken at the end of each shift and turned in to the office clerk.
• Office clerk is to compile all readings and fax or email daily to the equipment department for data
entry and tracking.
• Database will track and set up

Quality Improvement in the Healthcare Field: A Report
Quality Improvement Report:
Quality management in the healthcare field is an aspect that is geared towards ensuring that patients
receive excellent provision of care. This process is a function that healthcare facilities are
responsible to carry out to demonstrate their due diligence to performing optimal care of their
patients. Generally, the use of quality management enables administrators, physicians, and health
care business to identify ways of enhancing internal processes that provides more quality for
patients' outcomes. In the modern health care industry, several facilities seek for means of receiving
an advantage from other organizations in the market. One of the major ways for health care facilities
to obtain an advantage over others is to utilize quality improvement that results in better health
outcomes for patients. As the leader of a local healthcare facility, Cindy Janowski, has discovered
that leading organizations successfully implement quality improvement plans. Since she wants to
ensure that the organization cope with the quality standards, Cindy needs to understand the various
aspects related to quality improvement in healthcare.

Quality Improvement In Health Care Essay
The quality department has developed this manual to introduce new employees to the basic concepts
of risk and quality management within the institution. This manual meets the institution's initiative
for continuous quality improvement within each department and the opportunity to mitigate areas of
risk whenever possible. In order to accomplish this goal, it is important for the new employee to be
able to identify what quality improvement and risk management mean within the institution. The
institution believes that when employees are aware of these concepts, decision–making processes
can be put in place to reduce risk and improve quality. This manual will also review the challenges
that come from risk– and quality–management decisions especially in the health care setting. The
new employee will be introduced to a variety of tools available to help assess potential problems,
determine whether a change is needed and how to institute these changes through informed decision
making. A clear understanding of how to use these tools will help the institution reach their goals of
patient–centered care while providing a safe environment. Risk and quality management initiatives
have the potential to save lives and save the institution money. The institution believes that
successful risk and quality management is achieved only through employee awareness and
incentives to provide a culture of safety.

The Key Concepts Of Quality Improvement
The key concepts of quality improvement are the new designing system and process changes that
lead to improve operation and sustainable quality of organization culture. When new design and
procedure are introduced, the change management priority is to transit employees to new state. To
developing culture of quality, the quality management plan is the key feature of change management
that needs to inform structure as a specific wide–rang of leaderships in organization to support
transformation change and achieve quality outcome. At this point, Dawsonera (2005) leaderships
must have clear vision at the new state of change, a highly visible and the desired of committed a

Its goals is to promote quality with professional practice and to recognize excellence in the delivery

knowledgeable and use technology to facilitate seamless care in which the patient is the center of
the care and technology should not take time away from the patient. Nurses are the key caregivers in
the hospital and have a significant influence on the quality of care provided and ultimately on
treatment and patient outcomes. As a result, the hospitals pursuit of high quality patient care is on
their ability to utilize nursing resources most effectively, which can become even more challenging
due to the anticipated shortage of nurses. As the participation of hospitals in quality improvement
initiatives increases, so will the role of nurses because "Nurses are the largest deliverer of health

only through long–term commitment and dedicated application by executive management and all
employees (Gharakhani, 2013). The purpose of this paper is to converse on implementing successful
quality improvement practices within organizations to help achieve viable quality management.
Further, this paper also highlights the conditions that must be in place such as management
commitment, employee involvement, communication, and continuous improvement for successful
quality management to be aligned with ISO 9000.
Management Commitment and Leadership
Predominantly big and small organizations in society that practice quality management are assigned
to oversee the process to ensure that everyone is on board in every department. For quality
management to be fruitful, it is critical that all employees in every department understand the need
for quality and that changes and improvement are part of the process (Management, 2015).
Furthermore, it is essential for management to exhibit support for these changes, and show that
support when communicating and interacting with staff

The Well Established Quality Improvement Method
The well–established quality improvement method, response surface methodology (RSM), is a
powerful and efficient technique to find an optimum operating condition of a response including
systematic and continuous steps in the quality engineering literature. The RSM combines both
optimization and statistical methods for designing, analyzing, modelling, and solving an optimal
controllable factor setting in many engineering applications to seek a second–order fitted model for
the response with three main properties, such as a sequential, efficient and flexible design. The
rotatability concept is also taken into consideration the design criterion in the RSM to provide the
prediction variance assumption in the bounded convex design space and it ... Show more content on

Robust parameter design (RPD), which combines the RSM and optimization techniques in the
context of mathematical programming methods to obtain a desired response by using quality
characteristics, such as the nominal–the–best (N–type), the larger–the–best (L–type) or the smaller–
the–best (S–type) types, have been paid a lot of attention to the research community for finding
continuous–valued variables. The RPD was originally proposed as the N–type quality characteristic
in the context of the signal–to–noise (SNR) by Taguchi (1987). Taguchi's fundamental idea is that
the process mean is at the desired target value while the process variance is as small as possible. On
the other hand, Leon et al. (1987), Box (1988), Box et al. (1988), Nair (1992), and Tsui (1992)
discussed Taguchi's main idea and criticized the quality characteristics involving both the mean and
variance of the response. Steinberg and Bursztyn (1998) also debated a wide spectrum investigation
on the Taguchi's offline quality control method. In addition to these, Grize (1995) and Robinson et
al. (2004), Park et al. (2006) and Arvidsson and Gremyr (2008) also provided reviews of the RPD
models.
In addition to Taguchi's RPD model, Vining and Myers (1990) proposed an RPD model combining
with the RSM by using the dual response model (DRM) with the zero–bias approach, and they also
incorporated Lagrange multiplier, quadratic

Improving the Performance of Quality Improvement Teams Essay
Improving the Performance of Quality Improvement Teams
Introduction
Within every company there is a customer, regardless of what your line of business is it is being
done for the consumer albeit an external consumer or the internal consumer. The customer's needs
and expectations should be the driving force behind the decisions we make and the problems we
solve...the customer, not our own personal or monetary gain. As quality improves we have to make
sure that we are improving what matters to our customers not want we want to improve upon for
own sake. What is quality improvement? Why is it necessary? Who benefits from having a Quality
Improvement Team? What can we do to improve their performance? Quality improvement is a

A key premise in quality improvement is that you cannot improve a process until you fully
understand it. When improvements in quality are achieved, teams should continue to strive for
further improvements with the same problem or maybe address the other opportunities that have
been identified.
Health care improvement and high quality care requires more then the technical approach of tools
and methods, improvements often require a change in attitude and sense of ownership for the quality
of serviced provided by an organization. Many supporting factors must integrate QI into the
structure and foundation of the company, these are also known as the building blocks. Improvement
also implies that it will be implemented in a variety of settings, circumstances and various levels
within an organization. The structure has to also define how the different parts and levels of the QI
program fit together and how they will be synchronized.
Characteristics of a Successful Team There have been many researches that studied the
characteristics of a successful team over a period, Belbin's work is one of the most widely known it
investigated how different people within a team adopt different teamwork roles. In order to be
successful all quality improvement teams must have the following characteristics:
Commitment and involvement– the team should be able to understand the goals and should be
committed in achieving them

Quality Improvement And Patient Safety
Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
In the United States alone there are 98,000 deaths per year caused by low quality health care
(Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013, pg. 2). This statistic is disturbing because the errors that resulted in
death were errors that were preventable. The intent of this chapter is to bring awareness to health
care providers that are able to make a change in the quality of health care. In current practice
patients are subjected to medication errors, preventable hospitalizations, premature death, and poor
care provided due to racial, ethical, or low–income factors.
According to Werner, there are six components to providing quality health care: safety, timeliness,
effectiveness, efficiency, equitableness, and lastly the care being patient centered (Cherry & Jacob,
2014, pg. 378). Each component can be broken down to ensure adequate understanding of the
acronym STEEP. Safety is explained as keeping the patient free from injury when providing care
proposed to making the patient better. Timeliness is referred to as providing care in a timely manner
so that the possibility of harming the patient is greatly decreased – even if the delay is unintentional.
It is important to understand that harm caused to patients are not done with intent to do harm;
however, it is a result of poor quality health care. The third factor, effectiveness, is aimed at
providing evidence based care. Not only does the care need to be based on current practices and
knowledge;

Quality Improvement In Nursing
Quality Improvement The new healthcare system is based on the quality service rendered that will
eventually decrease the costs (James, 2012, p. 1). This system will give a reward or a bonus to the
health care providers whenever they meet or exceed quality standard that are being set (James,
2012, p. 1). In contrary, the system can also penalize those providers that are unsuccessful in
providing the indicated goals or cost savings (James, 2012, p. 1–2). With the healthcare systems
demand on quality care, institutions participate in various quality improvement activities (Draper,
Felland, Liebhaber, & Melichar, 2008, p. 1). Because nurses are the frontline in patient care, they
can affect the outcome of the treatment given. And therefore, their involvement in quality
improvement are essential (Draper et al., 2008, p. 1). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And as a nurse, following the instruction on how it is done, applying the right medication and doing
it on schedule are very important for a quick wound healing process and a quality patient care

documentation and multidisciplinary collaboration are essential (Smeltzer, Bare, Hinkle, & Cheever,
2010, p. 209). Prompt notification to the doctor for any wound progress, collaboration with the
dietitian regarding the proper diet to help speed up the healing process, a clear instruction to the
nursing aid that frequent patient turning and repositioning, and changing the diaper timely will aid
in the wound healing and prevent further skin damage and the development of a new one (Smeltzer

A Quality Improvement Storyboard
A Quality Improvement (QI) Storyboard is an organized way of documenting and displaying the QI
process. Most storyboards use clear, concise and easily understood statements to describe a
problem, identify the cause(s), explain the solution and display the results. Often, pictures and
graphs are used to show data, present results and demonstrate solutions. Furthermore, the QI
Storyboard can be used as an ongoing visual record of a team's progress.
The QI Storyboard should include the following 7 components. When possible, each step should be
expanded upon; explaining the methods used, and potential outcomes achieved.
Step 1 Reason for Improvement. Step 1 determines if a problem exists. If it does, is it a temporary
problem or is it a long term problem. What is the context of the problem and how is its effect

In step 3, the organized data gathered in step 2 is reviewed and analyzed, looking for factors which
can be changed to in order to improve the situation. Moreover, we want to verify that problems
identified, are most certainly causes to the problem. It is pointless to change a factor that has no
direct effect on the problem. The tool that is most useful in step 3 is the cause and effect or fishbone
diagram. Furthermore, statistical experiments can be used to correlate relationships between
identified factors with the results in the form of scatter plots.
Step 4. Countermeasure. In Step 4, all possible changes are formulated, based on feasibility of the
solution and the effectiveness it will have will upon the root cause factors that eliminate or
significantly reduce the problem. Additionally, when addresses changes, we want to assess whether
each change formulated is not only corrective in nature but preventative also. Implementing
preventative changes has a greater overall effect, it prevents recurrence. The tools used during step 4
are decision matrixes, force field analysis, Gantt charts and flow

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is an iterative process of: planning to improve a product or
process, plan implementation, analyzing and comparing results against those expected, and
corrective action on differences between actual and expected results. It is little used in clinical
medicine. Anemia, a complex problem in End Stage Renal Disease patients, served to test the ability
of an unique electronic medical record (EMR) optimized for daily care to empower CQI in practice.
They used data collected during daily care, stored in the EMR, and organized to display temporal
relationships between clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic events. Continuous Quality Improvement

Components Of Continuous Quality Improvement
Quality improvement has philosophical components by emphasizing satisfaction with the consumer
(patient, provider, and payer) and health outcomes by focusing on having a mission, values, and
objectives to measure performance and implementation (Sollecito & Johnson, 2013, p. 11). In order
to create this, they review the whole system of service by gathering information from the system
operation and patient, so that one can understand the root cause of the information (Sollecito &
Johnson, 2013, p. 12). Furthermore, quality improvement emphasizes wanting to find multiple roots
of causation, and seeks solutions that fix a multitude of functions, so that the process is optimized
(Sollecito & Johnson, 2013, p. 12). Lastly, emphasizing continuous improvement and analysis on
systems that will allow the medical personnel to improve continually the quality of care given
(Sollecito & Johnson, 2013, p. 12). In order to facilitate the philosophical components of continuous
quality improvement, a strong emphasis on structural components helps to facilitate continuous
quality by utilizing improvement teams that have been empowered to deal with existing issues of
the organization (Sollecito & Johnson, 2013, p. 12). The process improvement team uses a
continuous quality improvement tool or tools, "which are the following: flowcharts, cause–and–
effect diagram, histograms, Pareto charts, run charts, control charts, and regression analyses" to
understand the issues and data collection

Mary, a 79 year old patient has gotten up from bed without assistance to use the restroom. She falls
on the way and hits her head leaving her with a huge laceration and possible subdural damage. This
is the third fall this month on the unit; changes must be made in order to address the policies to
prevent falls. Policy changes are one of the many issues that a quality improvement nurse will
address in her field. Nursing is a growing and evolving field that changes with new initiatives,
government regulations, and technology. There is great demand in the field and new nurses are
constantly called to meet the needs of patients. As the population of our country ages, the number of
nurses needed to meet these demands will increase. The field of nursing does not just involve the
direct care of patients. A number of careers within the field support policy, management, and
coordination of patient care. Quality Improvement nursing is one career that can be obtained by a
registered nurse that does not involve direct patient care. Quality Improvement nursing involves
initiating policies and changes within the facility to improve patient care as well as lower facility
costs, increase patient safety, and increase nurse satisfaction. This career has grown drastically in the
last few decades due to health care reform acts, insurance regulation changes, and advances in
technology. The position of quality improvement requires a unique set of skills and training, a

Essay about Managing Quality Improvement in Healthcare
Managing Quality Improvement in Healthcare Healthcare providers strive to improve service
quality by implementing various quality management programs. Customers tend to seek for higher
quality of care when choosing treatments, providers, and health plans. For healthcare organizations
that desire to provide high quality care and compete in the global market, choosing a quality
management program to implement is critical for performance and efficiency. Many studies have
been conducted to analyze the effectiveness of such programs. Lean, Six Sigma and Total Quality
Management (TQM) are three programs that will reviewed by three different case studies in efforts
to understand them and to compare and contrast their capabilities.

The Delphi panel stressed the importance of regular performance measuring to ensure
improvements are sustained. When staff understood the reasons behind the changes and how they
improved the productivity and quality of care for patients, they were more likely to sustain the
implementations. Developing a culture with the appropriate elements to support continuous
improvement was seen as vital to see success with the lean methodologies.
Six Sigma A quantitative study conducted by Lifvergren, Gremyr, Hellstrom, Chakhunashvili, and
Bergman (2010) analyzed the experiences and from a hospital group during a three–year period
after the introduction of Six Sigma. It reports on 22 large Six Sigma improvement projects, their
results and influence on other improvement activities. The study shows that 75% of the completed
projects reached their goals within 18 months. The average net cost savings per completed
project/year was $55,300. Overall, the results showed that Six Sigma is a useful concept when
trying to improve healthcare processes. They recommend that Six Sigma should be an addition to
the improvement practices used in healthcare development initiatives. It was also observed that the
Six Sigma program can create much organizational pull regarding quality management and
improvement efforts if teamwork is applied.

Managed Care and Quality Improvement Essay
Managed care is often seen primarily as a cost cutting initiative that is concerned with managing
cost and cost only in the healthcare field. For this and a few more reasons managed care
organizations face severe judging on the quality of care that they provide. When analyzed correctly,
trends prove that managed care has in fact been very significant in determining and improving the
quality of care. In this paper, elements such as the state and federal oversights over MCOs,
voluntary accreditations, standardized performance indicators and examples of successful quality
programs developed by MCOs will be used to prove this statement. Though in the eyes of many

More methods are being created and taken place to ensure, inspect, repair and correct performance
where it is needed to do so. MCOs have developed a new status quo of improving and performing
better every year with tools such as the "Quality Drivers of Care" (Miller, 2004). One of these tools,
perhaps the most important one, is the voluntary accreditation of MCOs by organizations such as the
National Committee on Quality Assurance, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations, and the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, among others. While MCOs
are not required to do so they choose to, to show the industry that they are being assessed in the
quality and service they provide and that improvements are in fact being made. They are also drivers
in effectiveness and quality assurance as MCOs now find themselves competing amongst each other
not only on costs but also on their effectiveness.
Some argue that managed care does not improve the quality of care because according to several
studies, performance indicators for such, rank very low in populous states and high in less populous
ones. The argument is that if MCO's in fact are effective in improving the quality of care they
should do so no matter the population size. (Jencks S., Cuerdon T., e.t, 2000) To their defense, the
indicators in such study consistently varied from state to state therefore the results were not
completely conclusive. On the other hand, individual studies by

Health Care Organizations Focus On Quality Improvement
The health care organizations focus on quality improvements and meeting the patient's expectations.
Defining quality improvement with the nurses, providers, patients, and regulatory agencies, and
observing the concepts of Quality Improvement along with the viewpoints of the patients,
shareholders, and the clinician. Finding helpful resources to set up plans and strategies that affect
quality improvement.
The primary purpose of quality management is to beat the competition. It does this by improving the
services, products, and enhance safety to achieve maximum customer satisfaction and better
performance. Quality management makes all employees responsible for patient satisfaction.
Internally, it creates a sense of communication and effectiveness. Every care service we provide
should be based on quality, by defining issues in the organization, find solutions to improve patients'
satisfaction and increase the quality. Healthcare organizations need the quality management to track
effectiveness and performance through different measurement tools to collect information about the
patient satisfaction and evaluate the outcomes by comparing collected information to the
performance expectation.
The shareholders define quality in many different ways because everyone's perception of quality
and the different positions held by each and the perception of quality depends on the benefits that
they receive. The shareholders include the physicians, nurses, patients, payers, and even

To accomplish this, Riordan's Research & Development Department will identify the variability in
the production and the overall research process. Identifying and controlling these variations is very
important to the whole process of TQM, because they have a huge impact on process performance
and outcome of the process. Not doing so will cause variations in quality and lead to decreases in
customer satisfaction, and also will be conflicting with Riordan's commitment to a maintaining a
quality culture. There are few different ways to deal with the variability, but according to Melnyk
and Swink the best way to deal with it is to eliminate it. This required finding the actual source of
variation and eliminating it or controlling it. Our quality development team has identified the
variability in the product review process. Due to scheduling limitations user participation in product
review meetings generally is unpredictable. Members of Riordan's Research & Development
Department will put great effort in eliminating or controlling this variation. In place of the
substantive user feedback, Riordan can supplement the current on–site meeting process with
online/virtual review or forward confidential documentation to users for off–line review at their
convenience. This will help in minimizing or eliminating the variation in user participation in the
product review process. Quality tools are used to analyze and understand any variability in a

Improvement of the Quality in the Automobile Industry
3 Methodology
This work is done to study the improvement of the quality in automobile industry. This chapter
consists three sections named as "Problem definition", "Objectives" and "Methodology of the study"
respectively. The section 3.1 named as "Problem definition" describes the challenge or difficulty
that is to be solved. The solution may be achieved after fulfilling the objective by using some sub–
objectives that are described in section 3.2 named as "Objectives". The methodology described in
section 3.3 in details. This methodology has been devised keeping in mind the view of "Problem
definition" and the "Objectives" that are suggested for the fulfilment of the solution for the problem.
3.1 Problem definition
In small scale automobile part manufacturing company producing a large amount of products. A
multiproduct manufacturing facility has the wide process which involves a large number of
variables such as quality characteristics. Each and every product has been different quality
characteristics which are measured on the manufacturing line. But when multiple products are
produced or manufacturing trough a single processing line in multi product manufacturing facility,
individual process monitoring strategies are used for monitoring the process of individual parts. So
the challenge is that to develop a statistical process control charts for detection and implementation
of faults using the quality characteristics.

  • 3. Quality Improvement Analysis From the article we read about Toyota I loved the quote; "You can't solve problems unless you admit them" (Fishman, 2006). To me this is what quality improvement is all about. I would apply principles of quality improvement in my current practice a few different ways. First, I would look at the big picture. What needs to be changed? How can I take better care of my patients? After answering these questions implementing new techniques would need to occur. Lastly, I would make sure that my team and myself were all on the same page. Every team member needs to know what is going on and the objectives we are trying to meet in the long run. "At Toyota, there is a presumption of imperfection. Perfection is a fine goal, but improvement is much more realistic, much more human" (Fisher, 2006). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I were to apply our design of quality improvement to where I plan on working using Roger's Diffusion of Innovation Theory I would use his five elements to help me along. "According to Rogers there are five elements of a new or substitute clinical behaviour that will each partly determine whether adoption or diffusion of a new activity will occur: relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability" (Sanson–Fisher, 2004). Michelle and I decided hiring new nurses and using existing float nurses would improve compliance rates because there would be a smaller patient to nurse ratio. Before applying our design I would take Roger's five elements into consideration when approaching staff about a quality improvement project because ultimately how well the design works is based off staff accomplishment. This approach is compatible to current unit needs and can be easily adopted. We plan to do an audit quarterly to see if our new approach is improving compliance rates on the unit and is meeting the Joint Commissions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Collaboration with high management to improve quality and nurse performance lead to a developed system with the changing needs of performance improvement initiatives. The project keeps surgical knowledge up to date and relevant with the support from the staff and managers. The ability to provide feedback during huddle meeting intiated open communication. The quality management team reported the data that led the direction for implementing the quality checklist. Firstly, the nurse inclusion for routine surgical practice resulted in effective compliance, as every nurse was able to accomplish all the EBP standards on the surgical checklist. This enhanced a nurse buy in for efficient surgical patient care. The process worked due to agreement and helpfulness from all stakeholders. Secondly, nurses appreciated the training and additional education needed to become compliant for SSI reduction. This assisted in refreshing the knowledge of surgical information for seasoned and new nurses. Some nurses used the education session to accomplish their performance evaluation process. Thirdly, collaboration improves sharing of information between the nurses, surgeons and high management. Furthermore, increasing communication between the nurses, patients, and their family who then reported increased satisfaction with the surgical care. Lastly, the monitoring, ... • 5. Evaluating The Quality Improvement Initiative And... The Evaluation Plan Many different conceptual models exist for evaluating a process. An evaluation is a necessary step to determine how well a process is working and if the targets are being met. The measurements in a quality improvement project are important to assess where the organization stands with the project, and to determine success of the project (Sadeghi, Barzi, Mikhail, & Shabot, 2013). There are both financial performance metrics and quality performance metrics that are used in healthcare to determine success. The purpose of this paper is to propose on outline for evaluating the quality improvement initiative and financial implications, along with giving a description of specific metrics. A recommendation will be discussed as to how the organization can represent the data related to the quality improvement issue for ongoing monitoring. Also, there will be an explanation of how the organization can create an integrated view of performance that links finance and quality. Methods for Evaluating To improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care, applying research and evidence–based practice is necessary. In the Institute of Medicine's report, Keeping Patient Safe: Transforming the Work Environment of Nurses, there is an emphasis on adequate nurse staffing (Hickey & Brosnan, 2012). Therefore, the quality improvement initiative is to focus on closing the gap between the core staffing and actual staffing in a six–week schedule. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This essay will introduce five key influences on the establishing of education and care settings in Australia, the similarities and differences between the Quality Improvement Accreditation System and the current National Quality Framework. Maybanke Anderson and Lillian de Lissa as well as other people were pioneer who led the movement to early childhood education and care in Australia (OEDC,2000). Educational thinkers including Froebel and Pestalozzi and the associated development of preschool movements in Europe and America had significantly influence on Australia by the end of the 1890s (ibid.). • 11. Application Of Quality Improvement Methodologies This literary piece is a systematic review of the application of quality improvement methodologies. The goal of the paper is to identify and evaluate the utilization and effectiveness of quality improvement methods in the surgical field. The search identified thirty–four articles with nine studies describing continuous quality improvement (CQI). Five Six Sigma, five total quality management (TQM), five Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles, five statistical process control (SPC), four Lean and one Lean Six Sigma with 20 studies from the USA. The most common objectives of the papers were to improve outcomes, reduce infections and delays in care. Quality improvement methodologies from the manufacturing industry could be the key to improving the quality of care in surgery and reducing costs. The Lean methods have been applied to different aspects of healthcare successfully but the processes that are repetitive and can be standardized benefit the most. Many of the quality improvement methods have overlapping elements. The SPC and PDSA are standard for CQI, TQM, Six Sigma and some Lean programs. Several of these methods require considerable data collection and teammate training in the application and data analysis. Therefore, the cost to implement and maintain may be an issue but without an investment of some sort in these projects to begin there will be no evidence to determine the effectiveness of each method before widespread utilization. When looking at the decision to invest heavily into total quality management (TQM), you must look at its history and hospital statistics of the Pensacola area. The RPD was originally proposed as the N–type quality characteristic in the context of the signal–to–noise (SNR) by Taguchi (1987). Taguchi's fundamental idea is that the process mean is at the desired target value while the process variance is as small as possible. On the other hand, Leon et al. (1987), Box (1988), Box et al. (1988), Nair (1992), and Tsui (1992) discussed Taguchi's main idea and criticized the quality characteristics involving both the mean and variance of the response. Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Quality Improvement and Patient Safety In the United States alone there are 98,000 deaths per year caused by low quality health care (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013, pg. 2). This statistic is disturbing because the errors that resulted in death were errors that were preventable. The intent of this chapter is to bring awareness to health care providers that are able to make a change in the quality of health care. In current practice patients are subjected to medication errors, preventable hospitalizations, premature death, and poor care provided due to racial, ethical, or low–income factors. According to Werner, there are six components to providing quality health care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equitableness, and lastly the care being patient centered (Cherry & Jacob, 2014, pg. 378). Each component can be broken down to ensure adequate understanding of the acronym STEEP. Safety is explained as keeping the patient free from injury when providing care proposed to making the patient better. Timeliness is referred to as providing care in a timely manner so that the possibility of harming the patient is greatly decreased – even if the delay is unintentional. It is important to understand that harm caused to patients are not done with intent to do harm; however, it is a result of poor quality health care. Quality Improvement Implementation Quality Improvement Implementation In today's business world, competition is high and most organizations search for ways to gain an advantage in their respectable markets. One of the obvious, but unfortunately overlooked, ways to be at the forefront is establishing, maintaining, and constantly improving quality processes within an organization. Riordan Manufacturing has an established quality culture and strives to maintain the quality processes that are currently in place. Through its quality development team, Riordan actively seeks areas or processes that need improved quality standards. In an effort to achieve a higher level of quality, the quality development team at Riordan Manufacturing would like to present to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To accomplish this, Riordan's Research & Development Department will identify the variability in the production and the overall research process. Identifying and controlling these variations is very important to the whole process of TQM, because they have a huge impact on process performance and outcome of the process. Not doing so will cause variations in quality and lead to decreases in customer satisfaction, and also will be conflicting with Riordan's commitment to a maintaining a quality culture. There are few different ways to deal with the variability, but according to Melnyk and Swink the best way to deal with it is to eliminate it. This required finding the actual source of variation and eliminating it or controlling it. Our quality development team has identified the variability in the product review process. Due to scheduling limitations user participation in product review meetings generally is unpredictable. Members of Riordan's Research & Development Department will put great effort in eliminating or controlling this variation. In place of the substantive user feedback, Riordan can supplement the current on–site meeting process with online/virtual review or forward confidential documentation to users for off–line review at their convenience. This will help in minimizing or eliminating the variation in user participation in the product review process. Quality tools are used to analyze and understand any variability in a process. • 40. Improvement of the Quality in the Automobile Industry 3 Methodology This work is done to study the improvement of the quality in automobile industry. This chapter consists three sections named as "Problem definition", "Objectives" and "Methodology of the study" respectively. The section 3.1 named as "Problem definition" describes the challenge or difficulty that is to be solved. The solution may be achieved after fulfilling the objective by using some sub– objectives that are described in section 3.2 named as "Objectives". The methodology described in section 3.3 in details. This methodology has been devised keeping in mind the view of "Problem definition" and the "Objectives" that are suggested for the fulfilment of the solution for the problem. 3.1 Problem definition In small scale automobile part manufacturing company producing a large amount of products. A multiproduct manufacturing facility has the wide process which involves a large number of variables such as quality characteristics. Each and every product has been different quality characteristics which are measured on the manufacturing line. But when multiple products are produced or manufacturing trough a single processing line in multi product manufacturing facility, individual process monitoring strategies are used for monitoring the process of individual parts. So the challenge is that to develop a statistical process control charts for detection and implementation of faults using the quality characteristics. 3.2 Objectives In master thesis a quality control ...
