Lala Lajpat Rai
Thesis: Lala Lajpat Rai was an all around freedom fighter for India. He wanted them to be free from British rule. He protested openly and was
arrested several times, and eventually killed during a protest. He fought bravely and faithfully for what he believed in, he fought for what he thought
was wrong and the ways to make it right. India for a long time had grown tired of British rule, and they wanted to run their own country. They fought
hard and protested with little to no success, until one man came onto the scene, his name was Lala Lajpat Rai. His goal was to reform Indian Policy
through political tactics and through his writings. Lala focused on peaceful movements to create ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Punjab was adversely affected by the commission because the Arya Samaj was extremely active in the field of education. After the commission, it
became impossible for the people to have any say in their children's education. Lala declared that "The Government, by these new regulations, has
made it almost impossible for the Private Education Societies to start schools or improve them. People are compelled to conclude that the Government
does not want to spend money for educational work, nor can they endure that Indians should voluntarily undertake this work by spending money,
unless the Indians hand over their money and efforts to the Government. It would have been impossible for institutions like the Metropolitan College,
Calcutta College, Fergusson College, Poona and D.A.V. College to come into existence under the present policies."Lala dove headlong in the
struggle against division of Bengal. Along with Surendra Nath Banerjea, Bipin Chandra Pal and Arvinda Ghosh, he aroused Bengal and the nation in
a vigorous campaign of swadeshi. The British Government claimed that partition would make administering the region easier. The leaders saw
through this excuse as the age old British policy of divide and rule at work. Lala was arrested on May 3, 1907 for creating "turmoil" in Rawalpindi.
Lala went there when he learned that five prominent Indian lawyers had been served notices by the Deputy Commissioner. The

India
Modern India is a 'pluralistic, multilingual, and multi–ethnic society'. Modern India, as we are familiar with today, originally began in 1848 as the East
India Company. This is when most of the changes occurred that propelled India into the powerhouse that it has become today. In 1848, Lord Dalhouse
was appointed as Governor General. Under Lord Dalhouse's leadership multiple processes were implemented. These include the "consolidation &
demarcartion of society, the surveillance of society, and the education of citizens." Along with changes to society came technological advances such as
those to the "railways, canals, and the telegraph" which all were implemented in India almost immediately after their introduction in Europe. However,
not all of India's population was pleased with the direction the the East India Company was moving in. The new 'British–style social reforms' which
included large increases in land taxes were among the issues that the population was unhappy about. In 1857, the East Indian Rebellion occurred. The
East Indian Rebellion lasted approximately one year and issues were settled in 1858 resulting in the East India Company being dissolved.
Consequently, India was now under the leadership and direction of the British government. The difference between this new style of British–rule and
the type of British–rule that led to the rebellion was that this new leadership

The Political State of Countries Essay
The Political State of Countries
The political state of countries today is always changing and developing into new and hopefully more efficient methods of running a country. In
comparing and contrasting the political setup of two countries a good understanding of the different systems is easily seen. The fall of Communism in
many parts of the world has triggered countries like Russia to create new political systems and political parties. This also changes the functioning of the
economy and the military. Likewise in India, changes are almost seen daily in the ruling of the country. Comparing and contrasting these two countries
involves many areas including the political parties, legislative branch and the executive branch. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The communists get support only when the outlook for the economy is bad and fear of unemployment is affecting many workers. (Palmer, 346) The
last of these parties is the fascist party called the Liberal Democratic Party. This party platform stated in 1993 elections, "calling for a strong army,
continued government management of Russia's industries, liquidation of the 5000 gangs that control the economy, arm sales to any country or group
that wants the buy them, deportation of non–Russians, avoiding mistakes of Hitler in dealing with the West, "nuking" the Japanese if they continued
to pressure Russia to give back some small islands occupied since the end of World War II, a strong dose of anti
–Semitism, and finding husbands for all
unmarried women." (Palmer, 346) Like Russia, India has several parties in its Democratic system including: The Congress Party, The Bharatiya
Janata Party, and The Third Front. India for a long time was considered a single party Democracy and the Congress party ruled for about fifty years.
(Palmer, 453) The Congress party used these four items to gain support: charisma of Nehru and Gandhi, the independence movement, the party's
broad base in the local way of life and the ability to take in a great range of regional, ideological and communal groups. (Palmer, 453) The Bharatiya
Janata Party is a rising group that

Women Are Not Born But Made
Women are not born but made. Nowadays we celebrate women's day but there are many situations we had come through to this position and space
Punjabi women occupy nowadays, and comparing it to the times 60 years ago. The age of my grandmother. When the country had just got
independence. When the women are participating in nationalist movements were being pushed into the domestic household works.
There have been innumerable debates about gender in (Banerjee 2012) Punjab over last 60 years. Most of them were about women's positions in
society, their education, health, economic status, gender equality. What we can conclude from these discussions is that how women have always held
a certain contradictory position in our developing country in past years. In recent years women held a very less respectful position . they were not
treated as human. On other hand, Punjab has an increased percentage of literacy among women . now women are allowed to enter into professional
fields now. However, in the 1950s my grandmother tells women were just made to do household chores. They were not allowed to get higher
education or even go out without the permission of parents. They were supposed to be at home . while on the other hand the practices of female
foeticide, poor health conditions and lack of education persisting still continue. Even the supportive ideology of the home being women's real domain
and marriage being her ultimate destiny has not changed much in last 60 years.

and also in other rural development programmes. Desert Development Programme and Drought Prone Areas Programme can benefit from wasteland

income–earning opportunities become available in the informal sector of the economy. Consequently, the dependence of the poor on the natural

One of the states poverty alleviation programmes in India is Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP). "The basic objective of IRDP is to

Mistry's First Person Narrative: Indian Nationalism...
Rohinton Mistry's (38) first person autobiographical narrative of his trip to the Himalayan city of Dharmsala is on the surface a quaint, visual,
biographical account of a journey to an Indian town that helps the author come full circle: His childhood visions of the city he dreamt of visiting and
its reality as he sees it in adulthood are different in many ways, yet his childhood and adulthood converged in serene moment that epitomizes Mistry's
glorification of his native India: "To have made this journey, I felt, was to have described a circle of my own. And this understanding increased the
serenity of the moment" (51). However, a rhetorical analysis of the speaker in the essay, which as mentioned is a first person autobiographicalnarrative
lead us to an agenda that is hidden below the surface: Indian nationalism and pride. This is not to insinuate that the author has some hidden, malevolent
agenda to thrust Indian nationalism upon the reader. Rather, the tools of rhetorical analysis reveal the subtle undertones of the essay in a manner that
perhaps even the author is not full conscious of. Rhetorical analysis depends on part in gauging what effect a text has on its intended audience (Leach
218). Thus, the strength of rhetorical analysis lies in the textual evidence that is presented as proof of an analytical claim and that is what is attempted
throughout this analysis.
The essay starts off with an account of the Dalai Lama and how he found political refuge in India.

Example Of Nationalism Research Paper
The following essay talks about Nationalism. This essay will give reasons of nationalism behind different community challenges and how it affects the
country. The reason why I choose this problem because I think that the idea of nationalism is one of the most important ideas in which are the actions
taken by the members of the nation when they are seeing in achieving self–determination. And it stands for the ideology which is based on the premise
that the individual's loyalty and devotion towards his/her nation which surpass other individual or group interests.
Nationalism is a modern movement. After it came it got ignored in political philosophy which got noticed. And in last decade, it further led to issues in
the international justice of terrorism, the clash of civilisations. But still, all this are just the definition or meaning of nationalism. Actually, if we think
about this word "Nationalism" a lot of questions go through our mind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The role of nationalism in India. The conditions of the minority groups are growing worst day by day and the reason is many possible things. Some
administrative people make our constitution worst. The population of Muslim people is going down. It's true that in higher position there are
minority people but in the community and national identity they are very less. India is a very composite country because it consists of a lot of
languages, religions, customs, ways of living life etc. And all these things are in the majority and minority groups which led to inner conflicts which
give a very bad outcome of the nation's state. And the basic issue of India is to build up a real and inner sense. And the main point he made was that
the feeling of nationalism is going enlarging and more especially it takes place when a country is under foreign dominate. Like how India was under
British government during that time how Gandhi's spirit to get independence led to

Literary Analysis : Nectar Of A Sieve
Kamala Markandaya published "Nectar in a Sieve" in 1954 in attempts to enlighten the world about how hard it was to live a rural Indian life in that
time period. She tells this story through Rukmani, a woman who was given away in marriage at the age of twelve to a poor tenant farmer that she
had never met. Rukmani is very obedient to her husband as she helps him work in the unyielding fields and is a wonderful, caring mother to her seven
children. The struggles that Markandaya highlights in her book are not only problems known to a peasant villager, but they are also specific to women.
Women's roles in India during the twentieth century is very different from women's roles in the United States at that time, and because Rukmani was a
woman, she played a silent but necessary part in her culture.
Being a woman in India automatically qualified Rukmani for being a wife to someone that she would not have known and playing the role of a
servant in her household. If she was lucky she might be able to bear children and be attentive to their needs as well. They might have found ways to
make money for their family, but the average Indian woman was used for babies and housekeeping. In the book, this behavior is not questioned, but
it does play a big role as one of the main themes of the story. When she had reached the age where she could start having children, even though she
was very well educated, she immediately became a wife to a person who was below her previous social status.

The Rule of Law has not been compromised by the culture or socioeconomic conditions in India or Japan. India and Japan sought to achieve Rule of
Law to embody the values, institutions and principles in a modern liberal democratic country in order to modernize and adapt. Rule of law has two
main functions, to protect its citizens and stop unequitable use of state power by remaining transparent, and, to protect its citizens with enforcement
structures. In India, Western ideals and institutions were welcomed and successfully integrated with local culture. In Japan, transplant of rule of law

NEED EXAMPLES OF THIS
The Constitution of Japan does not have any express provisions for the Rule of Law. However, it has insinuated in a number of Articles within the
Constitution. For example, in Articles 1 to 8 the Emperor remains as a symbol of the state and carries out functions of the state but in contrast to the
Meiji Constitution, his role is mainly ceremonial and the Emperor does not have any powers relating to the government. This indicates that justice is
intended to be administered by impartial and independent justice institutions and kept separate from the Emperor and government bodies who are held
accountable under the law in Article 41 to 95 of the Constitution of Japan. Specifically, in Article 98, "Supreme Law" implies Rule of Law upholds the
accountability of government bodies and agents where all government actions are ruled under one Constitution. Another example is the incorporation
of fundamental human rights in Article 97, which asserts the liberal doctrine of human rights and protects individual rights and liberties.
IV.Differences between India and Japan

British Imperialism In India
The effects of British imperialism in India were bad. The British ruined India's economy for the Indians. They took over the Indian government causing
the Indians to become dependant on them. Eventually the pressure built up and the Indians had a murderous rebellion, Sepoy Mutiny. Due to the
inherent racism inside the British they constantly kept the Indians a level below them. The British did so much to harm to the people of India.
I used many sources for this paper. One of the primary sources I used was Gandhi because he was able to unite people of India against the forces of
British imperialism. The other sources I used were secondary and came from books, news articles, and databases. These sources were used because

To give a basic summary of what happened: "The Sepoy Rebellion... began in the barracks at Meerut, 30 miles outside Delhi. New Enfield rifles
had recently been introduced but to load them soldiers had to bite open the cartridges. The rumor spread that the cartridges were greased with pig
and cow fat. When 85 sepoys [Indian soldiers] at Meerut refused to use the guns and were put in irons, their comrades rebelled... killed several
officers and fled to Delhi." (Walsh 120). In Indian culture there are two dominant religions, Hinduism and Islam. The reason why this is important is
because that: "Cows are sacred to the Hindus–worshiped and never ingested. Pigs are vile, filthy animals to Muslims, and to taste any part of them is
forbidden" (Sepoy Mutiny Erupts in India). With Christianity being the dominate religion of England they did not necessarily care that they used cow
or pig fat. The fundamental disagreements between these religions created an air of hatred for each other, and the British completely disrespects the
other two religions by making them use pig and cow

British Imperialism Was Negative Effect Would you like if someone came into your house and start changing everything you do? Well, that is what

Commentary On The Book Sold
The immensely heart–throbbing and extremely thought provoking book, Sold, tells the story of a young girl, Lakshmi, who was sold into sexual
slavery in India, unintentionally. The story takes place in Nepal where Lakshmi lives with her mother, stepfather, and little brother; times are hard
and they have very little. They live in a hut with a mud roof that drips during the raining season, they only have a small portion of land to grow on
which is their main source of food, and Lakshmi's stepfather does not work and spends most of their income on himself. For the most part they are
able to struggle through and make ends meet, but there comes a time when that's just not enough anymore. With much reluctance from her mother,
Lakshmi and her stepfather agree that she will go work in the city as a maid and send back her earnings for the rest of her family. After leaving her
small town and travelling with a lady she is told to call "Auntie", Lakshmi starts to question "Auntie"s real endeavours with her. When "Auntie" leaves

The God Of Small Things By Arundhati Roy
In the novel The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, the reader notices the differences between the modern American view of politics and

on the wealthy family of the Syrian Christian Ipe family of Ayemenem. Within this family, many of them have problems in their lives and as a result,

Political Party Vs. Politics
Political party or anything in connection with politics is a common topic of every group of Indian who are sitting together at any place. It is always a
debatable topic. Most of Indians are very much interested in politics. We look at formation of many parties; we find that their establishment are mainly
due to ideological differences that result in split in parent party and at the end leads to formation of a new political party with a new agenda.
In multi–party system like India, the parties can be classified into three types' i.e.; National parties, Regional parties and State parties. The status of the
party is granted by Election Commission of India and after that it is reviewed occasionally. All the parties whether national, Regional or State party, they
are registered with Election Commission. A unique election symbol is given by the Election Commission to every registered party
Currently there are 7 National parties and 56 State parties. The total number of registered unrecognised parties in India is 1786. There are mainly nine
regional parties out of 657 Regional parties. There are 12 other upcoming parties.
The Election Commission mandates certain rules regarding starting a new political party in India like;
1.Every new party to have at least 100 members.[There are no set rules on how or who to recruit, it's up to the party]
2.Each member is required to hold an Indian voter ID card.

Banning of Beef in India One week ago, the Indian state of Maharashtra which is located on the western part of the country banned beef
consumption. The government of the region has banned both the possession as well as the consumption of meat. Muslims living on the western
part of the country have criticized the move stating it will cause many people to lose their job and increase the poverty rate. On the other hand, the
Hindu groups are ecstatic with the move made by the government. Hindus consider cows to be holy and they have already received protection and
help from the government to help reflect their beliefs . However, these laws have gone further to restrict the slaughter of bulls and calves. The
Bharatiya Janata Party are the forces behind the passing of these new laws. The punishment that follows being found with the offense of breaking
these laws are major fines and prison terms that could reach up to five years. Since March 5, 2015 beef has been disappearing from restaurants

years ago but could not since it lost power before it could pass the law. The President of Mumbai Suburban Beef Dealers Association, Mohammad Ali

What Is The Striders Poem
Whereas for Ramanujan the animal is not mere a symbol caged in human world rather it is a messenger of spirituality and thus of ultimate freedom. In
his most celebrated and discussed poem "The Striders" Ramanujan forcefully puts forward the inevitability and indispensability of animals and insects
in our life when he deploys a water bug as the metaphor to represent his poetic ideas:
Thin stemmed, bubble eyed water bugs
See them perch on the dry capillary legs
Weightless on the ripple skin of a stream (The Striders, p. 03. At–– Poli & Ready, 69)
Here, the water bug is striding the flowing stream with its thin legs in the running water maintaining the balance. Spiritual connotations of this instance
of the bug maintaining the balance on running water tell of its harmony with nature and adaptability to life better than that of humans. Such poems,
wherein Ramanujan celebrates his past mingled with animal world, speak of poet's self reflexivity and craving for some lost values.
Nevertheless, the new age typical post–colonial writers like Adiga do not show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The recently rally by Congress in New Delhi and JD(U) in Patna are the best set example that parties have already geared up for the battle 2014.

The national government has the power to dismiss state governments under specific constitutional clauses or in case no majority party or coalition is
able to form a government. The central government can also impose direct federal rule known as president's rule (or central rule). Locally, the
Panchayati Raj system has several administrative functions and authorities.
For most of the years since independence, the federal government has been guided by the Indian National Congress (INC). The two largest political
parties have been the INC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Although the two parties have dominated Indian politics, regional parties also exist.
From 1950 to 1990, barring two brief periods, the INC enjoyed a parliamentary majority. The INC was out of power between 1977 and 1980, when the
Janata Party won the election due to public discontent with the corruption (promulgation of Emergency with stringent forces) of Prime Minister Indira

The First Ten Amendments Of The First Amendment
On the cold night of March 5th, 1770, a mob of American colonists were protesting outside the Customs House in Boston. One colonist threw a
snowball hitting Private Hugh Montgomery. Montgomery replied with a shot into the crowd. This led the rest of the British Army soldiers to shoot
into the crowd killing five people in an event that would later be known as the Boston Massacre (Foner and Garraty). After this protest, more and more
taxes were levied against the colonies, particularly regarding tea. To add, trade with nations besides Great Britain was prohibited. These affronts were
met with the tarring and feathering of British tax collectors and the infamous Boston Tea Party. As a result of this, Massachussetts was essentially ruled
by martial law. This finally culminated with a declaration of independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776. TheUnited States of
America was formed.
Due to the British oppression, every American, including our founding founders, wanted greater protection of their rights. To accomplish this, James
Madison drafted the Bill of Rights and by the end of 1791, every state had ratified the first ten amendments. The First Amendment is primary, not just
because it is at the beginning, but because it articulates the First Freedom and the nature of that freedom. It states that "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the
people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." By connecting the freedom of religion with the freedoms
of speech and press, the First Amendment showed the people of America what it is to be a human (Bill of Rights).
The first part of that amendment is the result of the Founding Fathers' experience with the long history of religious strife in Europe such as the French
Wars of Religion, the Thirty Years' War, and the Crusades. They realized that religious disagreement can be counterproductive and create setbacks in
politics. It would be even worse if one religious group was favored. So, they ensured that the federal government cannot interfere in the citizen's

Ancient Indi The Ancient Indian Civilization

Ancient India The ancient Indians were highly influenced by the Ganges river, in fact that was one of the reasons they stayed around so long. This
river gave them fertile soil, and also played a big role in their religious practices. The ancient Indian civilization lasted from 3300 BC to 1500 BC.
(Kokila) Ancient India had very broad social pyramid requirements and the classes were servants, farmers, warriors and king, and the highest class
which was above the king. If it were not for the Ganges River or any other natural resource in the Indus Valley the ancient Indian civilization would
not have survived very long. The Ganges River is also sometimes referred to as the Ganga River, and it played a big part in the survival of ancient
India. Since it is known to be a symbol of the goddess Ganga, the Ganga River also influenced the religious beliefs of ancient India. It was believed
by Hindus to be holy water and if you swam in it you would be forgiven for all of your sins. (Ganga River) This river gave them fertile soil to grow
crops on, and without it the ancient Indian civilization would never have succeeded because they could not have gone anywhere to grow crops and.
(Ganga River) If it were not for the agriculture that the river gave ancient India there would be no social class or government. The Ganges River and the
Himalayas combined to protect ancient India from invaders and other civilizations.

Compare And Contrast Essay
The increase in globalization in the Indian subcontinent has brought along with it a series of new genres in Bollywood movies. Movies showcasing
freedom being fought for by the youth and women are just a couple of interesting ones. I'll be exploring two different movies Dor (2006) and Rang
De Basanti (2006), each of which has its own take on 'freedom' and 'choice'.
Dor has a very simple storyline; two female protagonists (Meera and Zeenat) whose husbands respectively (Shankar and Amir) leave India to get
employed in the Middle East. Unfortunately, employment in India is scarce, forcing lower middle class families to resort to such options. These
families are constantly fighting for their freedom of survival. Shankar is in a similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meera decides to be suppressed and live under the misery of her in–laws, whereas, Zeenat takes the liberty of marrying her lover and being
independent, even though his parents are against the martial reunion. Meera and Zeenat's encounters metaphorically oppose each other. Zeenat is
shown independently working with a hammer repairing parts of her house without any male assistance. Meera is shown hiding beneath her veil,
even when her husband is leaving the country. However, the friendship that develops between Meera and Zeenat, slowly leads Meera towards an
independent life giving her the courage to overcome her problems and make a life for herself. Personally, I feel this film has a feministic approach. It
showed the growth of a symbiotic relationship and also gives us hope that while such movies surface, women in similar real life situations are also
fighting for their freedom.
Freedom and choice are exercised quite differently in Rang De Basanti. In this blockbuster hit, the youth show the power they have hidden within
them. Initially, it comes across as a very sweet and comical film, filled with youthfulness and mischief. However, the movie takes a sudden turn and
becomes deep and violent. We witness an image of today's youth in India, who are so oblivious to the struggles that took place during the British
colonial rule of India. It

In these elections members for the Lower House are elected. Head of a state is called Chief Minister, who is member of the Lower House.
Constitutionally the figurehead of the state is the Governor, who is appointed by the President according to the advice of the national government.
After the state elections the governor calls for the suitable candidate to form the government. In general the governor has more legislative rights at state
level than the President has at national level. The governor can call on early elections in the state, or fire the government if he thinks that the
government has failed or is unstable. In the federal relations between the state and central government, the central government has more authority on
state matters than the state government. For example the central government has the right to redistribute the state borders without consulting the state
governments on this matter. If the political conditions in any state are not stable, the national government can call on the President to declare President
's rule in that specific state. And so the government in that state is dissolved, which means an emergency rule is declared and sometimes if necessary
the army is put to work in that state. Even though the Constitution determinates the rights of the different authorities in the administration process,

The Government Of India With The British Essay
There is a natural propensity to evaluate the Government of India with the British. But Indian Parliament and parliamentary institutions and procedures
are not a copy of the Westminster system. There are fundamental differences between their system and Indian system. Democracy extends way beyond
elections. However, the holding of transparent, credible and accountable elections is important for any democratic country and election observers
make a significant contribution in this process. In this essay, I will be heading a team of British officials who will be observing the Parliamentary
election process in India in May 2014. Being from Britain, we will witness a lot of similarities between the political systems of India, however there
will also be some differences, like India being a federal republic and a parliamentary democracy at the same time while Britain practices constitutional
monarchy. Furthermore, India has a president and a prime minister, whereas, although the head of state in Britain is in the form of a prime minister, it
also has a symbolic royalty head in the form of a ruling monarch. Generally the elections in India has been quite peaceful, well–organized but quite
unpredictable at the same time, especially with the growing influence of upcoming parties.
English Parliament has developed through somewhere in the range of three hundred years of history. In Britain, it can be the main establishment which

The Inequality Between Women And Women
Even if we were to look outside of the workforce spectrum, women are treated unequally on the basis of property. Even though women have equal
right to own and receive land, it is not a practiced in the culture of India. When looking at the society as a whole only men are ever seen and given
the rights of land so they can carry on their family name. Majority of the inequality does not have to do with laws or policies but what has been
engraved into the society. Till now many of the people inIndia are still raised with that same mentality that men have a higher authority than women do.
For this reason alone the Indian society is to blame for the inequality that occurs to women. However like Mirchandani points out an author by the name
of Carla Freeman whom shares her notes "...that women's jobs are both a source of pride and pleasure, and simultaneously a source of stress and
dissatisfaction." Also ends up pointing out "working women reassess and remake their identities and communities in important ways for social life."
Even though sometimes these identities are not linked with good outcomes but getting past that they lean towards making the status of the family very
positive.
India is hard to compare with many of the developed western countries. This is because of the enormous number of villages that still have a more
traditional mentality of keeping the men of the house as breadwinners. In countries, like Canada and the United States that are so modernized that they

Lala Lajpat Rai

  • 1. Lala Lajpat Rai Ashely Newsome Period 7 Avid Mrs.McGough Lala Lajpat Rai Thesis: Lala Lajpat Rai was an all around freedom fighter for India. He wanted them to be free from British rule. He protested openly and was arrested several times, and eventually killed during a protest. He fought bravely and faithfully for what he believed in, he fought for what he thought was wrong and the ways to make it right. India for a long time had grown tired of British rule, and they wanted to run their own country. They fought hard and protested with little to no success, until one man came onto the scene, his name was Lala Lajpat Rai. His goal was to reform Indian Policy through political tactics and through his writings. Lala focused on peaceful movements to create ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Punjab was adversely affected by the commission because the Arya Samaj was extremely active in the field of education. After the commission, it became impossible for the people to have any say in their children's education. Lala declared that "The Government, by these new regulations, has made it almost impossible for the Private Education Societies to start schools or improve them. People are compelled to conclude that the Government does not want to spend money for educational work, nor can they endure that Indians should voluntarily undertake this work by spending money, unless the Indians hand over their money and efforts to the Government. It would have been impossible for institutions like the Metropolitan College, Calcutta College, Fergusson College, Poona and D.A.V. College to come into existence under the present policies."Lala dove headlong in the struggle against division of Bengal. Along with Surendra Nath Banerjea, Bipin Chandra Pal and Arvinda Ghosh, he aroused Bengal and the nation in a vigorous campaign of swadeshi. The British Government claimed that partition would make administering the region easier. The leaders saw through this excuse as the age old British policy of divide and rule at work. Lala was arrested on May 3, 1907 for creating "turmoil" in Rawalpindi. Lala went there when he learned that five prominent Indian lawyers had been served notices by the Deputy Commissioner. The ... • 2. Modern Indi A Pluralistic, Multilingual, And Multi Ethnic... Cassandra Kaur Sheanh Dr. Russell Mardon Political Science 147 February 1, 2015 India Modern India is a 'pluralistic, multilingual, and multi–ethnic society'. Modern India, as we are familiar with today, originally began in 1848 as the East India Company. This is when most of the changes occurred that propelled India into the powerhouse that it has become today. In 1848, Lord Dalhouse was appointed as Governor General. Under Lord Dalhouse's leadership multiple processes were implemented. These include the "consolidation & demarcartion of society, the surveillance of society, and the education of citizens." Along with changes to society came technological advances such as those to the "railways, canals, and the telegraph" which all were implemented in India almost immediately after their introduction in Europe. However, not all of India's population was pleased with the direction the the East India Company was moving in. The new 'British–style social reforms' which included large increases in land taxes were among the issues that the population was unhappy about. In 1857, the East Indian Rebellion occurred. The East Indian Rebellion lasted approximately one year and issues were settled in 1858 resulting in the East India Company being dissolved. Consequently, India was now under the leadership and direction of the British government. The difference between this new style of British–rule and the type of British–rule that led to the rebellion was that this new leadership ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Political State of Countries Essay The Political State of Countries The political state of countries today is always changing and developing into new and hopefully more efficient methods of running a country. In comparing and contrasting the political setup of two countries a good understanding of the different systems is easily seen. The fall of Communism in many parts of the world has triggered countries like Russia to create new political systems and political parties. This also changes the functioning of the economy and the military. Likewise in India, changes are almost seen daily in the ruling of the country. Comparing and contrasting these two countries involves many areas including the political parties, legislative branch and the executive branch. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The communists get support only when the outlook for the economy is bad and fear of unemployment is affecting many workers. (Palmer, 346) The last of these parties is the fascist party called the Liberal Democratic Party. (Palmer, 346) Like Russia, India has several parties in its Democratic system including: The Congress Party, The Bharatiya Janata Party, and The Third Front. India for a long time was considered a single party Democracy and the Congress party ruled for about fifty years. (Palmer, 453) The Congress party used these four items to gain support: charisma of Nehru and Gandhi, the independence movement, the party's broad base in the local way of life and the ability to take in a great range of regional, ideological and communal groups. Nowadays we celebrate women's day but there are many situations we had come through to this position and space Punjabi women occupy nowadays, and comparing it to the times 60 years ago. The age of my grandmother. When the country had just got independence. When the women are participating in nationalist movements were being pushed into the domestic household works. There have been innumerable debates about gender in (Banerjee 2012) Punjab over last 60 years. Most of them were about women's positions in society, their education, health, economic status, gender equality. What we can conclude from these discussions is that how women have always held a certain contradictory position in our developing country in past years. In recent years women held a very less respectful position . they were not treated as human. On other hand, Punjab has an increased percentage of literacy among women . now women are allowed to enter into professional fields now. However, in the 1950s my grandmother tells women were just made to do household chores. They were not allowed to get higher education or even go out without the permission of parents. They were supposed to be at home . while on the other hand the practices of female foeticide, poor health conditions and lack of education persisting still continue. • 9. Mistry's First Person Narrative: Indian Nationalism... Rohinton Mistry's (38) first person autobiographical narrative of his trip to the Himalayan city of Dharmsala is on the surface a quaint, visual, biographical account of a journey to an Indian town that helps the author come full circle: His childhood visions of the city he dreamt of visiting and its reality as he sees it in adulthood are different in many ways, yet his childhood and adulthood converged in serene moment that epitomizes Mistry's glorification of his native India: "To have made this journey, I felt, was to have described a circle of my own. And this understanding increased the serenity of the moment" (51). However, a rhetorical analysis of the speaker in the essay, which as mentioned is a first person autobiographicalnarrative lead us to an agenda that is hidden below the surface: Indian nationalism and pride. This is not to insinuate that the author has some hidden, malevolent agenda to thrust Indian nationalism upon the reader. Rather, the tools of rhetorical analysis reveal the subtle undertones of the essay in a manner that perhaps even the author is not full conscious of. Rhetorical analysis depends on part in gauging what effect a text has on its intended audience (Leach 218). Thus, the strength of rhetorical analysis lies in the textual evidence that is presented as proof of an analytical claim and that is what is attempted throughout this analysis. This essay will give reasons of nationalism behind different community challenges and how it affects the country. Nationalism is a modern movement. After it came it got ignored in political philosophy which got noticed. • 11. Literary Analysis : Nectar Of A Sieve Kamala Markandaya published "Nectar in a Sieve" in 1954 in attempts to enlighten the world about how hard it was to live a rural Indian life in that time period. She tells this story through Rukmani, a woman who was given away in marriage at the age of twelve to a poor tenant farmer that she had never met. Rukmani is very obedient to her husband as she helps him work in the unyielding fields and is a wonderful, caring mother to her seven children. The struggles that Markandaya highlights in her book are not only problems known to a peasant villager, but they are also specific to women. Women's roles in India during the twentieth century is very different from women's roles in the United States at that time, and because Rukmani was a woman, she played a silent but necessary part in her culture. Being a woman in India automatically qualified Rukmani for being a wife to someone that she would not have known and playing the role of a servant in her household. If she was lucky she might be able to bear children and be attentive to their needs as well. They might have found ways to make money for their family, but the average Indian woman was used for babies and housekeeping. In the book, this behavior is not questioned, but it does play a big role as one of the main themes of the story. When she had reached the age where she could start having children, even though she was very well educated, she immediately became a wife to a person who was below her previous social status. ... India and Japan sought to achieve Rule of Law to embody the values, institutions and principles in a modern liberal democratic country in order to modernize and adapt. Rule of law has two main functions, to protect its citizens and stop unequitable use of state power by remaining transparent, and, to protect its citizens with enforcement structures. NEED EXAMPLES OF THIS The Constitution of Japan does not have any express provisions for the Rule of Law. However, it has insinuated in a number of Articles within the Constitution. For example, in Articles 1 to 8 the Emperor remains as a symbol of the state and carries out functions of the state but in contrast to the Meiji Constitution, his role is mainly ceremonial and the Emperor does not have any powers relating to the government. This indicates that justice is intended to be administered by impartial and independent justice institutions and kept separate from the Emperor and government bodies who are held accountable under the law in Article 41 to 95 of the Constitution of Japan. Specifically, in Article 98, "Supreme Law" implies Rule of Law upholds the accountability of government bodies and agents where all government actions are ruled under one Constitution. Another example is the incorporation of fundamental human rights in Article 97, which asserts the liberal doctrine of human rights and protects individual rights and liberties. They took over the Indian government causing the Indians to become dependant on them. Eventually the pressure built up and the Indians had a murderous rebellion, Sepoy Mutiny. Due to the inherent racism inside the British they constantly kept the Indians a level below them. The British did so much to harm to the people of India. I used many sources for this paper. One of the primary sources I used was Gandhi because he was able to unite people of India against the forces of British imperialism. To give a basic summary of what happened: "The Sepoy Rebellion... began in the barracks at Meerut, 30 miles outside Delhi. New Enfield rifles had recently been introduced but to load them soldiers had to bite open the cartridges. The rumor spread that the cartridges were greased with pig and cow fat. When 85 sepoys [Indian soldiers] at Meerut refused to use the guns and were put in irons, their comrades rebelled... killed several officers and fled to Delhi." (Walsh 120). In Indian culture there are two dominant religions, Hinduism and Islam. The reason why this is important is because that: "Cows are sacred to the Hindus–worshiped and never ingested. Pigs are vile, filthy animals to Muslims, and to taste any part of them is forbidden" (Sepoy Mutiny Erupts in India). With Christianity being the dominate religion of England they did not necessarily care that they used cow or pig fat. The fundamental disagreements between these religions created an air of hatred for each other, and the British completely disrespects the other two religions by making them use pig and cow ... The story takes place in Nepal where Lakshmi lives with her mother, stepfather, and little brother; times are hard and they have very little. They live in a hut with a mud roof that drips during the raining season, they only have a small portion of land to grow on which is their main source of food, and Lakshmi's stepfather does not work and spends most of their income on himself. For the most part they are able to struggle through and make ends meet, but there comes a time when that's just not enough anymore. With much reluctance from her mother, Lakshmi and her stepfather agree that she will go work in the city as a maid and send back her earnings for the rest of her family. After leaving her small town and travelling with a lady she is told to call "Auntie", Lakshmi starts to question "Auntie"s real endeavours with her. In his most celebrated and discussed poem "The Striders" Ramanujan forcefully puts forward the inevitability and indispensability of animals and insects in our life when he deploys a water bug as the metaphor to represent his poetic ideas: Thin stemmed, bubble eyed water bugs See them perch on the dry capillary legs Weightless on the ripple skin of a stream (The Striders, p. 03. Spiritual connotations of this instance of the bug maintaining the balance on running water tell of its harmony with nature and adaptability to life better than that of humans. • 32. The First Ten Amendments Of The First Amendment On the cold night of March 5th, 1770, a mob of American colonists were protesting outside the Customs House in Boston. One colonist threw a snowball hitting Private Hugh Montgomery. Montgomery replied with a shot into the crowd. This led the rest of the British Army soldiers to shoot into the crowd killing five people in an event that would later be known as the Boston Massacre (Foner and Garraty). After this protest, more and more taxes were levied against the colonies, particularly regarding tea. To add, trade with nations besides Great Britain was prohibited. These affronts were met with the tarring and feathering of British tax collectors and the infamous Boston Tea Party. As a result of this, Massachussetts was essentially ruled by martial law. This finally culminated with a declaration of independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776. TheUnited States of America was formed. Due to the British oppression, every American, including our founding founders, wanted greater protection of their rights. To accomplish this, James Madison drafted the Bill of Rights and by the end of 1791, every state had ratified the first ten amendments. The First Amendment is primary, not just because it is at the beginning, but because it articulates the First Freedom and the nature of that freedom. It states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." By connecting the freedom of religion with the freedoms of speech and press, the First Amendment showed the people of America what it is to be a human (Bill of Rights). The first part of that amendment is the result of the Founding Fathers' experience with the long history of religious strife in Europe such as the French Wars of Religion, the Thirty Years' War, and the Crusades. They realized that religious disagreement can be counterproductive and create setbacks in politics. It would be even worse if one religious group was favored. ("Doing business in,") Another important fact to remember about the Indian Culture is that the Indians view time differently than Americans do. This is important to remember when scheduling and showing up for meetings. An Indian executive may show up late for a meeting, but this is not considered disrespectful. ("Doing business in,") Understanding the culture will help to create trust between the business partners and will make the negotiations smoother. POLITICS AND LAW The Indian government has three distinct branches: Executive, Judiciary, and Legislative. The House of the People ( Lok Sabha) and the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) comprise the Parliament, the Legislative branch. The Lok Sabha is the larger of the two houses with 552 members. This House controls the money bills, and the money needed for the administration of the Government. • 34. Ancient Indi The Ancient Indian Civilization Kevin Maxim Mr. Ball 8th Grade Social Studies E Block 6 November 2015 Ancient India The ancient Indians were highly influenced by the Ganges river, in fact that was one of the reasons they stayed around so long. This river gave them fertile soil, and also played a big role in their religious practices. The ancient Indian civilization lasted from 3300 BC to 1500 BC. (Kokila) Ancient India had very broad social pyramid requirements and the classes were servants, farmers, warriors and king, and the highest class which was above the king. If it were not for the Ganges River or any other natural resource in the Indus Valley the ancient Indian civilization would not have survived very long. The Ganges River is also sometimes referred to as the Ganga River, and it played a big part in the survival of ancient India. Since it is known to be a symbol of the goddess Ganga, the Ganga River also influenced the religious beliefs of ancient India. It was believed by Hindus to be holy water and if you swam in it you would be forgiven for all of your sins. (Ganga River) This river gave them fertile soil to grow crops on, and without it the ancient Indian civilization would never have succeeded because they could not have gone anywhere to grow crops and. (Ganga River) If it were not for the agriculture that the river gave ancient India there would be no social class or government. The Ganges River and the Himalayas combined to protect ancient India from invaders and other civilizations. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Compare And Contrast Essay The increase in globalization in the Indian subcontinent has brought along with it a series of new genres in Bollywood movies. Movies showcasing freedom being fought for by the youth and women are just a couple of interesting ones. I'll be exploring two different movies Dor (2006) and Rang De Basanti (2006), each of which has its own take on 'freedom' and 'choice'. Dor has a very simple storyline; two female protagonists (Meera and Zeenat) whose husbands respectively (Shankar and Amir) leave India to get employed in the Middle East. Unfortunately, employment in India is scarce, forcing lower middle class families to resort to such options. These families are constantly fighting for their freedom of survival. Shankar is in a similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meera decides to be suppressed and live under the misery of her in–laws, whereas, Zeenat takes the liberty of marrying her lover and being independent, even though his parents are against the martial reunion. Meera and Zeenat's encounters metaphorically oppose each other. Zeenat is shown independently working with a hammer repairing parts of her house without any male assistance. Meera is shown hiding beneath her veil, even when her husband is leaving the country. However, the friendship that develops between Meera and Zeenat, slowly leads Meera towards an independent life giving her the courage to overcome her problems and make a life for herself. Personally, I feel this film has a feministic approach. It showed the growth of a symbiotic relationship and also gives us hope that while such movies surface, women in similar real life situations are also fighting for their freedom. Freedom and choice are exercised quite differently in Rang De Basanti. In this blockbuster hit, the youth show the power they have hidden within them. Initially, it comes across as a very sweet and comical film, filled with youthfulness and mischief. However, the movie takes a sudden turn and becomes deep and violent. We witness an image of today's youth in India, who are so oblivious to the struggles that took place during the British colonial rule of India. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Indian Politics Politics of India India is the largest democracy in the world. India has the biggest number of people with franchise rights and the largest number of political parties, which take part in election campaign. In the 1996 national elections, almost 600 million people voted and an average of 26 candidates competed for each of the 543 territorial constituency seats. Elections are held at different levels. The two major election levels are at national level, after which the national government is established and at state level after which the state government is established. Elections are also held for city, town and village councils. There are different political issues in Indian politics. Some are national level and some regional level.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In general the governor has more legislative rights at state level than the President has at national level. The governor can call on early elections in the state, or fire the government if he thinks that the government has failed or is unstable. In the federal relations between the state and central government, the central government has more authority on state matters than the state government. For example the central government has the right to redistribute the state borders without consulting the state governments on this matter. If the political conditions in any state are not stable, the national government can call on the President to declare President 's rule in that specific state. And so the government in that state is dissolved, which means an emergency rule is declared and sometimes if necessary the army is put to work in that state. Even though the Constitution determinates the rights of the different authorities in the administration process, there can be other pressures like strong lobbies or strong political parties, which, sometimes ... Gandhi in his autobiography admits that it left an indelible impression on his mind. He writes: "It haunted me and I must have acted Harishchandra to myself times without number." Gandhi's early self–identification with Truth and Love as supreme values is traceable to his identification with these epic characters.[5][6] In May 1883, the 13–year old Mohandas was married to 14–year old Kasturbai Makhanji (her first name was usually shortened to "Kasturba", and affectionately to "Ba") in an arranged child marriage, according to the custom of the region.[7] Recalling the day of their marriage he once said that " As we didn't know much about marriage, for us it meant only wearing new clothes, eating sweets and playing with relatives." However, as was also the custom of the region, the adolescent bride was to spend much time at her parents' house, and away from her husband.[8] ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Government Of India With The British Essay There is a natural propensity to evaluate the Government of India with the British. But Indian Parliament and parliamentary institutions and procedures are not a copy of the Westminster system. There are fundamental differences between their system and Indian system. Democracy extends way beyond elections. However, the holding of transparent, credible and accountable elections is important for any democratic country and election observers make a significant contribution in this process. In this essay, I will be heading a team of British officials who will be observing the Parliamentary election process in India in May 2014. Being from Britain, we will witness a lot of similarities between the political systems of India, however there will also be some differences, like India being a federal republic and a parliamentary democracy at the same time while Britain practices constitutional monarchy. Furthermore, India has a president and a prime minister, whereas, although the head of state in Britain is in the form of a prime minister, it also has a symbolic royalty head in the form of a ruling monarch. Generally the elections in India has been quite peaceful, well–organized but quite unpredictable at the same time, especially with the growing influence of upcoming parties. English Parliament has developed through somewhere in the range of three hundred years of history. In Britain, it can be the main establishment which practices sovereign forces and on which there are no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Inequality Between Women And Women Even if we were to look outside of the workforce spectrum, women are treated unequally on the basis of property. Even though women have equal right to own and receive land, it is not a practiced in the culture of India. When looking at the society as a whole only men are ever seen and given the rights of land so they can carry on their family name. Majority of the inequality does not have to do with laws or policies but what has been engraved into the society. Till now many of the people inIndia are still raised with that same mentality that men have a higher authority than women do. For this reason alone the Indian society is to blame for the inequality that occurs to women. However like Mirchandani points out an author by the name of Carla Freeman whom shares her notes "...that women's jobs are both a source of pride and pleasure, and simultaneously a source of stress and dissatisfaction." Also ends up pointing out "working women reassess and remake their identities and communities in important ways for social life." Even though sometimes these identities are not linked with good outcomes but getting past that they lean towards making the status of the family very positive. India is hard to compare with many of the developed western countries. This is because of the enormous number of villages that still have a more traditional mentality of keeping the men of the house as breadwinners.
