2. R.I.P.D
• I chose the opening sequence of R.I.P.D as an example of
the opening sequence of an action film.

4. From the information given at the opening sequence of R.I.P.D I predict that
the rest of the plot would be involved with the bad police who shot his partner
in the back.
From this betraying action, I think the story would be about revenge from
either the police who got shot (although he is dead) or his family member such
as his wife or father. They would uncover that the bad police killed their loved
ones and end up revenging him in some sort of way.
5. The opening sequence hints to us that the target audience is most likely
people of all ages who enjoys actions films and or crime films. This is because
the opening sequence shows an overwhelming amount of armed weapons
and action. This will intrigue any lovers of crime and action films into watching
the rest of the movie.
Furthermore, we can note that it is suitable for most ages as although there are a
lot of shooting and action, the scene are not very gory which means children
would still enjoy it as well as adults.
7. The action genre of the film is set up in the opening sequence and titles. From
the title R.I.P.D (rest in peace police department) we can note that this film is
most likely about crime as it is called R.I.P police department.
This hints the genre to us as we expect a lot of action and fighting between the
police and criminals which suggest to the audience watching that this is most likely
a action film.
8. Furthermore the mise en scene in the beginning scene also suggests that it is
an action film by showing conventions audience expects. From the beginning
shots, we see a lot of weapons such as guns, bullet proof jacket and
helicopters. All these objects are conventions in the genre and relates to
fighting and killing which suggests to the audience that there will be a lot of
action in this movie. It also helps creates excitement and makes the fighting
more dramatic for the audience to enjoy.
9.
10. We also clearly see the two teams of protagonist - the team of police and
antagonist - the gangsters and the bad police. This is also very typical in
action films and suggests that there will be conflicts which is most likely lead
to fighting and action in the film.
12. A tracking shot is used following the police as they enter the hide out of the
gangsters. This helps the audience to identify who is the protagonist. By
tracking the police and their movements, it put the audience on the same side
as the police by helping them relate with the police better.
The tracking shot also helps create a sense of motion which helps to uphold the fast
pace of the opening sequence. This is important in the action genre as it keeps the
audience intrigued and makes the action more dramatic and intense.
13. • During the tracking shot at the beginning, a low angle shot
is used looking up at the officers. This makes the audience
feel less powerful when compared to the officers as we are
looking up at them. This camera angle helps to convey the
feeling that the police are very skilful and strong.
14. A lot of mid shot of the main police officer is used to Indicate that he is the
main character as he is positions in the front and centre. It also allows the
audience to focus on his costume and weapons that tells us that he is a police
officer.
A close up shot of the officer’s face is used at the
end of the opening sequence when he got shot by
his partner. By using the close up shot, it allows the
audience to focus on the facial expression of the
character. This emphasises how shocked the police
is when he realised he was betrayed.
15. • During the action scene of the police officer fighting the
gangster, a lot of eye line match shots were used from the
perspective of the police. This allows us the audience to
see what the police is looking at . This helps to create a
connection between the audience and the police as we are
learning about the situation through the perspective of the
police.
