Defining Prose Narrative 1) Theme Setting - lays the foundation for the atmosphere of the poem or story. What country or year? Is it during a war? Through these questions, and many more, we can begin to visualize what the environment was like at that time. For many, they can get a mental picture and visualize the setting. Description - this is used for a variety of reasons. First, description can be the appearance of characters for visualization. But we can also come to relate to the characters when we can understand their thoughts and deep feelings. Description goes hand in hand with the setting. While the setting is being laid, the author uses description to allow us to understand what was the scene looks like. What feeling can we get from the setting. Chaos or peace? Without description we cannot begin to use our imagination. Plot - provides us with the sense of purpose that the author is writing. In some cases we can understand an event that is taking place during that time through the plot. Authors try to convey their feelings through their writing. A plot involves the timeline of events that take place. Through the plot we are introduced to many characters and places as well. Many different events can take place within the plot which will lead us to the climax, the reason the story is being told. The Critical Mind 1) Critic in Life Absolutely, I would say that this is a fair argument. Everyone seems to be held up to critical inspection, especially from ourselves. We set a standard for people in general thinking I should graduate by this year, have a good job by this year, purchase a house, get married, have children, etc. We start creating these plans at a young age not even realizing what we are about to get into. They say "You are your worst critic." In most cases this is true, but that doesn't mean we will not be criticized by others. Parents, family, and friends can become our critics. Are you still working at ...? When are you giving me grandchildren? Are we not all classified in to different groups? Upper class, middle class, westerner, etc. .

With the elements style, tone, and irony, students are especially used to unconscious recognition, a kind of "know it when I see it" affair. However, the book breaks them down well and shows different ways in which to recognize and analyze these elements. Style is something we are highly attuned to. We all have our own personal clothing style, speaking style, and even academic style - we study differently, think about how classes should be differently, respond to different teaching methods differently, and have different expectations about what a class should be. Trust me, this is something I am well aware of. What we often don't know is where these expectations and choices come from. It is especially difficult for us to question our own preferences when it comes to style, but it is also difficult to understand other people's choices. The important thing to have when it comes to style is an open mind. It is helpful to give people the benefit of the doubt and open ourselves up to different styles. We should always be in a conversation with an author. Why has the author chose a specific style? Why has an author left so much out? Sometimes we get unsettled by having to answer questions about a work because they don't answer them for us. However, if we understand an author's choices as an aspect of style, we can go ahead and assume there is a plan there. All we are left with is what is there. So we break that down into categories and look for important comparisons and relationships among these component pieces that may give us a clue as to what it is an author had in mind. This will be especially important when we get to poetry. Poetry is in many ways the art of leaving out everything but the absolute essentials. It is meant to bring us out of our comfort zone and force us to have an experience that we may not be comfortable with. We are left on our own to build something and to examine something and especially to question something. This is an important skill in the academic world. It is a process of creation. It is less about achieving some kind of goal and more about having an experience. That can be unsettling for students who often want things to be black and white, right or wrong. However, if we push ourselves into uncertainty and become comfortable with not having a necessarily right or wrong answer but instead a strong analysis, we can work with style. We also have the tools that the book teaches us, the elements. By breaking things down into pieces and categorizing them, we can come to conclusions that were not readily apparent when we began a process of analysis, much like the drafting process. We must begin somewhere and allow the process to take us somewhere new. It is messy. It isn't neat, but it is an experience that can change you and transform your thinking if you allow it to. Reaction Paper # 2—After reading this week’s notes “Reading Fiction” and “Graduation” by Maya Angelou, complete reaction paper 2 as described below. Discussed in the notes this week are 6 elements of fiction: Tone, Plot, Characterization, Setting, Theme and Point of View. Choose one element (other than POV) and reflect on how Angelou uses it in her writing. Give specific examples and quotes from the text to show how she uses the element and its effect on the story. Be sure to quote correctly (using quotation marks and providing paragraph #s). Remember that reaction papers should be 1-2 pages, double-spaced. Below is a brief sample of how to discuss one of the elements with examples from the text. The example discusses the use of point of view in the story: Maya Angelou’s story “Graduation,” is told from first-person point of view, told through the main character, Marguerite Johnson. Although it is not yet clear who the narrator is within the first 5 paragraphs, in paragraph 6 Angelou writes, “In the Store I was the person of the moment.” Thus, we are introduced to the narrator of the story. The rest of the story uses pronouns such as we, me, my which solidifies the narrator’s point of view. Hearing the story unfold from first-person POV gives credibility to the theme of the story. Maguerite Johnson is one of the graduates excited to be graduating, and is present at every point of the story—from the events leading up to the day, the events during the ceremony, and her feelings about what has occurred. In paragraph 7, she tells us, “My class was wearing buttery-yellow piqué dresses, and Momma launched out mine.” She goes on to describe the expert way her mother crafted her dress. It is clear from all of her descriptions that she, her family and the community looked toward the day with great anticipation, even though as the narrator states, “I was only twelve years old and merely graduating from the eighth grade” (paragraph 8). She goes on to explain that many teachers in the Arkansas Negro schools had the same diploma but were able to teach. ENG 202: Questions about Point of View in Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Wife’s Story” (284-287), Alice Walker’s “Olive Oil” and Meron Hadero’s “The Suitcase” (both in folder) 7 questions: 50 points total Read everything carefully. This is designed to provide a learning experience. Writers often use one of these three types of narration: First-person narration uses “I” because “one character is telling the story from [his/her] point of view.” In other words, we step into the skin of this character and move through the story seeing everything through his/her eyes alone. To best illustrate first-person narration, choose parts of the story that show the character revealing intimate thoughts/feelings, something we can see only by having access to his/her heart & mind. This is a useful point of view to show a character’s change of heart, to trick a reader, and/or to make the reader realize that s/he understands more than the narrator does. Third-person omniscient narration: “The narrator sees into the minds of any or all of the characters, moving when necessary from one to another.” In other words, the narrator is god-like (all-knowing) with the ability to report on the thoughts of multiple characters. To best illustrate omniscient third-person narration, choose parts of the story that show characters’ private thoughts/feelings revealed only to us, not the others. This can be a very satisfying point of view because we know what is on many or all characters' minds and do not have to guess. This is a useful point of view to show how events impact characters in the story. Third-person limited narration “reduces the narrator’s scope to a single character.” In other words, the narrator does not know all but is rather limited to the inner thoughts of one character; however, this narrator can also objectively report on the environment surrounding this character. To best illustrate third-person limited, choose parts of the story that illustrate this character’s thoughts/feelings that are only revealed to us, not to the others; additionally, choose parts of the story that show objective reporting of events. This is a useful point of view for stories that highlight a dynamic between a character and the world. Each story this week uses a different type of narration. “The Wife’s Story” uses first-person narration: the story is told from the point of view of the wife. 1) Quote a part of the story that proves it is written in first-person narration. To earn full points, choose wisely. Evidence-based practice is an approach to health care where health care professionals use the best evidence possible or the most appropriate information available to make their clinical decisions. Research studies are gathered from the literature and assessed so that decisions about application can be done so with as much insight as possible. Not all research is able to be taken into the clinical practice that is why assessing the literature and determining if it is possible to carry out in a safe and effective manner is important. The steps that make up the evidence-based practice is first to ask a question which pertains to your clinical practice, then search for research and literature that will help solve your question. Third step is to evaluate the evidence and determine if it can be used safely and effectively in your clinical practice, then you must apply the information to your clinical experience and with your patient’s values. Finally, you must evaluate the outcome and determine if the desired effect is being reached. (LoBiondo-Wood, 2014) The nursing process is drilled into our education as nurses and with good reason. The nursing process is used countless times throughout our practice. I was taught the acronym ADPIE which stands for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. When assessing it is important to gather as much information on the patient whether it be subjective or objective findings. After we make a nursing diagnosis based on our assessment and then we plan on how to best care for our patient, and what our goals and their goals are for their care. Once the plan is made and the patient consents to the care plan then we can implement the plan. After we implement, we evaluate whether our goals and the patient’s goals are being reached. If not, we begin the nursing process all over again. (LoBiondo-Wood, 2014) In my own practice I use the nursing practice on every patient and even do it multiple times. When a patient enters the emergency room they are immediately being assessed and then once the physical and interview assessments are done the nurse creates a nursing diagnosis. The nurse creates a care plan that is based on evidence-based practice and goes over it with patient to gain consent. The difference between these two processes is how they begin. The nursing process begins by gathering as much information as possible to then give a nursing diagnosis. While evidence-based practice begins by posing a question first and then gathering as much information as possible. They do have similarities especially when it comes to the end of the processes. Evaluating whether the care plan is working in the nursing process or whether the research and literature brought out a successful new take on the clinical practice. Abstract Neurofeedback (NF) is gaining recognition as an evidence-based intervention grounded in learning theory, and 19-channel z-score neurofeedback (19ZNF) is a new NF model. Peer-reviewed literature is lacking regarding empirical-based evaluation of 19ZNF. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to evaluate the efficacy of 19ZNF, in a clinical setting, using archival data from a Southwest NF practice, with a retrospective one-group pretest-posttest design. Each of the outcome measures framed a group such that 19ZNF was evaluated, as it relates to the particular neuropsychological constructs of attention (n = 10), behavior (n = 14), executive function (n = 12), as well as electrocortical functioning (n = 21). The research questions asked if 19ZNF improves these constructs. One-tailed t tests performed, compared pre-post scores for included clinical assessment scales, and selected quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) metrics. For all pre-post comparisons, the direction of change was in the predicted direction. Moreover, for all outcome measures, the group means were beyond the clinically significant threshold before 19ZNF, and no longer clinically significant after 19ZNF. All differences were statistically significant, with results ranging from p = .000 to p = .008; and effect sizes ranging from 1.29 to 3.42. Results suggest 19ZNF improved attention, behavior, executive function, and electrocortical function. This study provides beginning evidence of 19ZNF’s efficacy, adds to what is known about 19ZNF, and offers an innovative approach for using QEEG metrics as outcome measures. These results may lead to a greater acceptance of 19ZNF, as well as foster needed additional scientific research.
