5. Most narratives can be analysed to a degree using a set of theories called structuralism which is applied in our
film. The film we made is a based on a linear narrative theory as it’s a continuing process to which a secret is
revealed but the story develops as it goes on until the secret is exposed at the end of the film, so to sum it up;
it’s almost like a mystery. The film starts off where the protagonist Amy is fostered into a single parent
household. The mum looks like any other caring mum however as the film goes on, we see that she always
seems to be around the corner whenever Amy experiences any bad dream. Thought the film, there is a ghost
girl who seems to be following her and is always in her dream, because the ghost girl is not human, the
audience most likely assume that she is the villain in the film however there is a twist as the mum is actually
the villain in this film. This twist in the story supports the theory of Todorov in his five stage model where
there is a complication to the story as the medallion (symbolic object) seems to be the reason why Amy has
these bad dreams however at the end of the film, the complication is solved. There is also a false hero in this
film which is the mum, at first the audience may think the mum is stereotypical nurturing, caring mum who
always seems to be for Amy as soon as she has these bad dreams however at the end of the film; the audience
acknowledges that she is actually the villain of the film. The theory by Levi Straus is applied to our film where
there is a binary composition of evil and good. These characteristics are seen in the ghost girl and the mum as
the ghost girl is good and the mum bad. However when addressing these characteristics, there was first
confusion as to who is the good character and who’s not. Barthes theory of action codes is seen in our film
where at the beginning of the film, the fostered papers are shown to the audiences so they acknowledge that
Amy is a fostered girl, this recognition is easily understood by just showing the papers without any speaking.
Moreover, Faludi identifies women’s right were being threatened by media backlash, as career orientated
women do not get to enjoy motherhood and struggle on finance. But in our film, it contradicts that theory and
challenges whether there really has been a backlash (Oakley & Mitchell) because she is a dual worker mother
who is capable to provide for a young girl like Amy and still works.
