The document discusses how the filmmaker's opening sequence for their film uses and develops conventions of the horror and comedy genres. Specifically, the filmmaker has included production company logos to make it seem more professional, costumes the main character in a vampire costume with fangs and blood to signify the horror genre, and adds humorous slippers to lighten the tone. The location is a modern house and it is filmed at nighttime to incorporate generic horror elements. Text is also included to give it a documentary style like the film What We Do In the Shadows, which inspires parts of the opening.
1. QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAYS
DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS
Chloe Collins
2. In my film opening I have inserted
certain distribution/production
companies in order to have a more
realistic effect. I have also chosen
Metrodome Distribution and Funny or
Die in particular as they distribute the
kind of films that I have made myself. I
found this out as What we do in the
Shadows was distributed by
Metrodome Distribution and produced
by Funny or Die.
3. By making and adding my own
production logo means my film
looks more professional and
realistic. Therefore knowing
who made the film. I made this
on LogoMaker.
4. For this I have put a picture of Luca
as a vampire in this shows a
convention of my genre relating to
one half which is horror, we can
see this through his costume
(vampire cape), make up (blood
coming from his mouth, darkness
around the eyes and vampire
teeth). My audience are likely to be
looking out for these main signs
when they know they are going to
be watching a horror about
vampires. Stereotypically we all
think of a vampire as a person that
has a black cape, fangs and blood
coming from their mouth this is
why I have included these aspects
in order to make it clear to the
audience. The costume has also
been inspired with how they
dressed the characters in What we
5. I have added within the costume the slippers
this is the only part of the costume that
makes the film funny. I have added these to
tone down the film so it’s not too serious at
that point with the slippers it looks like he
isn’t taking ‘being a vampire’ very seriously
therefore wanting a more humorous effect
from the audience as he is trying in the clip
to be serious. This is then made obvious to
the audience that the film is also comical.
This also matches with parts of What we do
in the Shadows which I have inserted a
picture underneath Lucas Slippers.
6. This clip is fairly early on in the
film opening, this is before Luca
is even seen. I think this is most
likely one of the funniest scenes
as it shows there is something
wrong to the audience before
they even see what it is. The
expressions on their face and
the drop of the cutlery show the
funnier side and the first sign to
the audience that it’s not a
serious horror film. I have then
shown this at a point in What we
do in the shadows that is similar
to mine where something funny
is also going on at the table.
This links to the comedy side of
the genre.
7. The location of the film
opening shows how it’s a
documentary style rather
than a film. This is known
straight away. Also telling
the audience that it’s a
modern day documentary
to fit my target audience.
This then follows and fits
nicely with my actors as
they are young and
modern. I think this
challenges my media genre
as the style of the location
may not be what you would
of imaged stereotypically
when you think of a horror.
Then again with the
comedy side it fits in
better.
Although What we do in the Shadows is set in
a house I have used a more modern/normal
house as it is better suited to my target
audience and looks normal as half of the
characters in my film opening aren’t
vampires.
8. I have chosen to film it when it
was going dark which you can
see in this picture, this was to
get the effect of the horror side
as stereotypically horrors are
filmed at night. Again
incorporated with an actual
film like What we do in the
Shadows is filmed/set night. I
believe that this setting uses
my media genre well.
9. Here I have put a picture of each
character in with the actors name next
to it. I believe this represents a real
media film as obvious they show the
names of the characters. I have placed
this at the end as Luca is dressed as a
vampire so by putting it at the start
would of given the whole thing away,
also as the actors aren’t well known I
have placed them by the end so the
audience aren’t put off it. By the font, I
represented the genre of horror.
10. I have added a piece of writing
to my film opening to show
the documentary style. This
then proceeds to say what
they have done to film this
and what the audience will be
experiencing if they watch the
film. This relates to What we
do in the Shadows as they also
have the writing telling the
audience about what they are
about to watch.
