Below are various disciplines involved in Water Management. Earlier this was known as Water Supply Department but due to below domains now it is commonly known as Water Management Department.

4. Procurement of Water
Water is to be first procured from water sources from
nearby area for various requirements. To manage this
constant efforts are required through meetings, inspections
with source owners at different levels. They may be
government organizations such as water resources
department.
Incoming of water needs to be monitored on daily basis so
that plant operations and drinking water requirement does
not suffer.
5. Conveyance of Water
Water is to be conveyed from the source of
the owner to the using plant by effective
methods this may be with any canal system
or pipeline system. Root of this system
should be monitored on continuously.

6. Storage of Water
Elaborate storage arrangement is to be made
at the users' premises. Capacity of the
storage should be sufficient to cater the
demand of few days (for e.g., 60 days in
case of a steel manufacturing unit
) depending on the type of industry.

7. Distribution of Water
Through networked arrangements
should be made so that requirement of
water to different unit of the industry
along with required quality is obtained.
This system may include pumping
stations and pipeline network.

8. Treatment of
Water
Every industry requires different quality of
water, so treatment units needs to be provided
to meet the desired quality. For drinking water
supply a water treatment unit of suitable
capacity needs to be provided. In a steel plant
water chemical treatment plants, drinking water
treatment plants, settling tanks, cooling towers
etc. are generally used to maintain the water
quality.

9. Analysis of Water
A self-sufficient laboratory is needed to
analyse the water physically, chemically and
biologically within the premises and qualified
expert technicians should be deployed to
carry out the required testings. This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-SA.
10. Solid Waste
Management
Industries also generates solid waste such as
sludge, scale etc. These are generally generated
from the settling tanks. These needs to be
disposed properly at desired site if these sludge
or scale is having certain chemical value. They
may be reused for operations if permitted
technically. For disposal suitable transport
mechanism should be available.

11. WasteWater Treatment
Industrial and Domestic waste generated from plant
operation and drinking water use. These waste
cannot be allowed to disposed in any nearby sources
without any proper treatment. Proper treatment unit
such as oxidation pond, holding ponds and sewage
treatment plant needs to be installed. Quality of
waste coming out of plant should be well within the
permissible limit of standards as per applicable
norms.
12. Outlet
Management
Any plant or township may contain
various streams of water to take it
out from the owners' premises.
These outlets requires continuous
cleaning and maintenance for smooth
flow of water.

13. Maintenance
Water supply network may have various pump
houses, pipeline network and other equipments.
They needs to be maintained in up-to date condition
sufficient extra units are also needed to be installed
so that plant performance does not suffer incase of
any breakdowns. It is better to go for preventive
maintenance rather than curative maintenance and
firefighting. This includes electrical and mechanical
maintenance.

14. Material
Management
Various Mechanical spares, mechanical assets store and
spares, consumables and chemicals are also required by
any industry. There procurement should be planned so
that no shortage happens at the time of requirement. It
is advisable that mechanical spare and assets should be
kept for nearly two years and consumable and
chemicals should be procured for at least six months to
avoid any system delays.

15. Contract Management
It is not possible to carry out all the activities in
the industry with the regular in-house staff, to
overcome this various contracts are being operated
for smooth functioning of the industry. It is
advisable to finalize such contract well before the
expiry of existing contract. Knowledgeable and
expert staff is to be deployed to monitor the
contract management activities. By this we can
avoid unnecessary interference of audit, vigilance,
finance etc.

16. Safety Management
Safety should be the priority of the plant
operation, maintenance and transportation
functions On daily basis safety performance of
the plant is to be monitored. For any unsafe
practices counseling is to be done for the
employees overseeing safety norms. Various
meetings and demonstrations must be carried
out to create safety awareness.

17. Environment
Management
It is to be ensured that water
discharging out of the plant
should be as per the desired
quality. To avoid pollution and
hazards in nearby areas.

18. Metrological Management
It is necessary to create the meteorological
data of the area such as rainfall,
temperature, humidity and other desired
parameters to take decisions regarding
selection of operations and manpower.

19. Financial
Management
All payments for the services and
supplies rendered by third parties
should be made in time and delay
in this regard should be avoided.
