Language Investigation [Title/ Focus] To what extent have older children’s books been made more
suitable for modern readers through editing? (Enid Blyton)
Centre Marks
AO1 [20] Range of methods – detailed approach taken. Lots of evidence offered –
firmly rooted in data. Technically very detailed. Perhaps syntax could be
more polished, but remainder demonstrates high level thought and
analysis. Sensitive & conceptualised.
Overall it was felt that this was not quite full marks as there were a range
of language methods examined, but not all of these were fully developed,
and perhaps slightly fewer subheadings might have meant that some
sections could be more fully explored. Some slightly less convincing
elements e.g. RP, but still very detailed and thus towards top end of the
band.
19
AO2 [20] Very interesting idea – well developed. Method is a little descriptive – but
allows for workable investigation (limiting of data set is very sensible).
Sense of concepts underpinning approach to analysis – embedded
carefully. It was felt that this was securely in the top band, but that
perhaps some aspects could be more shaped, e.g. perhaps questions could
have been used.
18
AO3 [10] Aware of cultural overview. Sustains links between context and
analysis through and conclusion is sensibly shaped. Degree of
tentativity in conclusion. Rooted in text reception.

AO4 [30] Highly credible piece of writing and the voice is sustained across the work.
Language focus is maintained and is believable in this context. Lots
offered here for a non-expert. Lively register and is able to add humour
without losing sense of purpose. Sophisticated work.

Language Investigation [Title/ Focus] How the context of a conversation influences language
alteration for a bilingual person
Centre Marks
AO1 [20] Range of methods although not as shaped as could be in
subheadings. Some ‘counting’ which could have been more subtly
shaped. Some evaluation.
Not as strong as AO2, but some well developed points. Some
unclear aspects e.g. conclusion which does not really conclude
effectively
15
AO2 [20] Great data collection and precise transcription which should be
credited. Sensible and interesting context for an investigation.
Personal interest. Relevant use of theories throughout is a strength
of this work.
Stronger than AO1 with clear conceptual comments. Addresses
ethics appropriately. It was felt that this doesn’t quite go into the
top band, not just one mark difference between this and folder 1,
and that the shaping could have been a bit more precise than ‘lexis
& semantics’ and ‘context’ (which wasn’t really context).
16
AO3 [10] Context shift drives the shape of the investigation. Lots of
knowledge and information offered as explanations of findings.
Consistent links.

AO4 [30] Real context for writing and begins in an engaging manner. Offers a lot of
interesting detail for a non-expert and fully engages with the task of
‘informing’. Some issues about coherence which lowers the mark (later
paragraphs) therefore not consistent. Balancing act between informing
and quality of writing.

Language Investigation [Title/ Focus] How does the language used between the gangsters in The
Wire and The Sopranos differ?
Centre Marks
AO1 [20] Wide-ranging aims. However focuses on discussing the
programmes rather than an analysis of the language choices.
Problematic in some ways as the data is treated as though it is real.
Tricky balancing act between bands here – but this does just fit in
9-12.
9
AO2 [20] A thin methodology which doesn’t discuss when / where in the
episodes the data was captured or the speakers. Representation
not mentioned at all. Range of concepts covered in terms of
speech, but AO2 is fairly thin therefore cannot push up into 9-12.
8
AO3 [10] Some interesting detail in the cultural background section which is
used to support the analysis of the talk. Fails to fully consider ideas
around identity / construction / representation though – so in the
end this is problematic. NB: at 5 would be more superficial even
with this level of detail. If had covered all elements in fairly simple
way would be able to think about 7-8 band.

Dealing with data from TV series is nice and idea – but the
student needs to begin with a strong awareness that it is not
‘real’ and they must consider the impact of this in their
approach to the data analysis.

Magazine (Discussion)Article
AO4 [30] Potentially a very engaging and appropriate topic for an adult audience.
Manages to resist patronising tone – although doesn’t quite pull off voice
needed. Introduces the topic well, but becomes increasingly ‘essay’ like as
progresses. Does offer some helpful and interesting examples and covers
a range of language concepts / ideas around the area of language change.
This would have been much more successful had there been a precise
audience / genre behind it because in terms of re-casting ideas and
concepts it does quite a good job.

Language Investigation [Title/ Focus] The language of TV football commentary
Centre Marks
AO1 [20] Tabulates some detail and offers brief paragraph on lexis. Some
detail extracted, but does not explore the data fully.
Just into 5-8 band – lacks precision and detail for higher.
5
AO2 [20] Simple aims and a little anecdotal in purpose. Descriptive approach
to data collection, but allows for an investigation. Transcribes
some speech effectively for analysis. Odd hypothesis.
Slightly stronger than AO1 as there is some data collected, and
there is a shape to the investigation. Not inappropriate but thin
and descriptive.
6
AO3 [10] Aware of some surface issues connected with the data use.
Comment on roles pushes up slightly.
Just into 3-4 band. One or two factors are addressed so not lower
(little or no attempt).

AO4 [30] Appropriate article for genre. Sense that some language information is
offered, but sense of shaping is not sustained across the writing. Becomes
‘essay-like’ as progresses. Sense of organisation of ideas and final
paragraph demonstrates audience awareness. Uneven – mixed bag.
Some language ideas presented, but essay-like in approach.
Meets 2 of the 3 bullet points, with register rather uneven.
