Knowledge In California Water Wars By Josh Viers
What is knowledge and why is it important? According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary,
knowledge can be defined as "the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained
through experience or association..." ("Knowledge"). While this definition is quite straightforward,
there is some implications behind this definition. Knowledge can be a powerful tool that can be used
to stop bad things from happening or to foster good things, depending on how the knowledge
understood is used and applied. Throughout the entirety of Core, knowledge has been the foundation
of every unit, something that has been constantly lectured on and discussed in the discussion
sections. Usually, the more something is talked about, the more important that something ... Show

Not only should we want to make a change, we are obligated to make a change. One such case
includes the gold rush of 1858. Peggy O'Day lectured on the gold rush and how our actions had
monumental effects on the environment then and how those actions still have a lasting impact on the
environment now. Peggy delved into how our excessive use of water and destruction of the
landscape led to widespread issues of water pollution and water scarcity. By flooding the hillsides
and then taking the sediment and releasing it in the river, the water was rendered unfit for drinking.
Many small towns relied on these rivers as a main source of drinking water and were thus put in a
state of panic because of the dearth of clean water. Furthermore, the mining process required a lot of
timber, so miners exploited the forests and cut down nearly one–third of all the timber (O'Day). Not
only did the mining process kill a lot of vegetation, but it also forced animals to leave their habitats,
placing those animals in danger of facing starvation and potential extinction. Many of these
destroyed habitats and ecosystems can still be seen today, which serves as a reminder of how we
should and need to make changes to how we do things. Peggy implicitly implied in her lecture that
we need to not only be cognizant of how mining works, but also be aware of the fact that we cannot
make the same mistakes with

1. What Are The Flaws Of Human Nature?
Although one would acquire good morals, such as having sympathy and caring for others, it is
shown throughout history the flaws of human nature. Humans are forced to make decisions that
destroy other humans. It is shown in history that greed would cloud a human's judgment, and
casualties occurred due to wars. Some humans are forced to make decisions that negatively affect
the environment people live in. For example the destruction of forests living organisms, the
pollution of water, and air clearly demonstrate the true destructive nature of some human beings.
Even though most humans would know that doing the "right" thing should be the correct choice, in
order to benefit alone some humans make selfish choices. Human nature is flawed in which some
people make selfish decisions that would cause harm to others and the environment.

Martha Conklin, a professor of Engineering, claimed that "water is not being used correctly in
California, thus effecting nature negatively, and can lead to war." Because water is always readily
available, we often take for granted water and don't think how much water is wasted when we take
extra long showers or leave the faucet leaking. Using water wastefully however comes at large price.
Here in California water is readily available but only at the cost of harming nature. As a result there
are predictions for mega floods and earthquakes with history making amplitudes. In addition
Conklin claims that " In the last 20 years spring has come two weeks earlier." Evidence such as this
suggest that our wastefulness is impacting our environment negatively and thus puts many people at
risk of a natural disaster occurring. In order for the wealthier to have easier and more access to
water, we have put the larger population in California in danger by increasing the chances of a

The Nature Of Science, Agriculture Practices, Fracking And...
Human beings are very fortunate to be living on Earth. Even though humans get everything we need
from these precious lands, we always feel that we have to modify it. Reshaping our world to make it
more suitable for individuals is not the way to go. Humans have the desire for scientific process, and
are driven to make the world a better place; though in reality, the outcomes of our environment and
our selves say otherwise. Our ways of science, agriculture practices, fracking and irrigation
practices, ways of mining, inventions of plastics, and even our advancement in technology is leading
us to the consequences of not only hurting our species, but our environment as a whole. People
believe that mankind will learn to utilize Earth's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a living thing, a celebration of human fallibility" (Thomas 304). Our discovery of science has
changed over the years. At first it was seen as a systematic study of nature, but it has now come to a
point where our source of inspiration has become abused, and it 's taking a toll on our home.
Scientific advancement plays a major role to the reason why our world has become greedy and
wealthy. For example: fossil fuels, pollution, greenhouse gasses, advance weaponry (nuclear), and
even modern technology is destroying the environment we live in. None of the examples were
apparent in nature, until man mistreated the original uses of science. This proves that science is
politics, and it is shaped by ideological plan by the user (science is a technique). We must prevent
the misuses of science, because it is too late to stop progressing and go back to living in nature. Our
misuse of science lead to the technique of hydraulic mining, which was used for the quest of gold in
Sacramento, where these companies used enormous water cannons, called "monitors", to annihilate
large hills and small mountains. Once gold is removed, left over detritus found their way to the
streams, which then flows into the larger waterways to the Sacramento River, that supplied a portion
of the water. This resulted in the Sacrament River carrying too much silt, which was hazardous for
the people to consume. This later caused floods in Sacramento to occur, which the

The California Water Wars were a series of conflicts between the city of Los Angeles and farmers
and ranchers in the Owens Valley. As Los Angeles grew in the late 19th–century, it started to
outgrow its water supply. Fred Eaton, mayor of Los Angeles, realized that water could flow from
Owens Valley to Los Angeles via an aqueduct. The aqueduct construction was overlooked by
William Mulholland and was finished in 1913. The water rights were acquired through political
fighting and deceiving people. Z alley, into the aqueduct. Mono Lake's ecosystem for migrating

Oil And Almonds: The New Guns And Butter?
Oil and Almonds: The New Guns and Butter? During the 1930s, the United States was crippled by a
severe economic depression that lasted a decade. In this time, nearly one in five Americans were out
of work, factories, machinery and other capital were going unused. The United States was operating
inside its production possibilities curve and many resources were going to waste. However, the start
of World War II sparked the United States' economy. The demand for American munitions increased
resulting in job growth; thus, the demand for consumer goods, like butter, also increased. This
phenomenon, often referred to as the Guns and Butter model, demonstrates how two seemingly
unrelated goods could contribute to or reflect economic growth. To better ... Show more content on

Any number of consumer goods could be associated with oil to form another Guns and Butter type
model, but almonds are perhaps the most ideal comparison. Suzanne McGee, a journalist for The
Guardian, discuses the "looming conflict" between those who want to use water for fracking and
those who want to use water for irrigation. In her article, McGee reports that Ken County, California
is home to the "sixth largest oil area" in the country and the production of oil in that area is due to
hydraulic fracking, which requires large amounts of water to be effectively removed from the water
cycle. Additionally, this area is home to many farmers who require significant amounts of water for
irrigation purposes (McGee). With water resources becoming scares as a result of the long lasting
drought, these "water–intensive industries" are in

Farmers Use Water For Drought Stricken California
Develop Your Argument Worksheet Introduction What is your topic or issue? Farmers use of water
in drought stricken California Who is your audience? The people living in urban areas of California
Why should your audience care about your topic? Is there some common ground in this topic which
all parties agree is important? All groups agree that there is a need for food, but the people of
California do not want the farmers to continue to receive unrestricted amounts of water. They should
care about this topic because they buy their food from the farmers that they want to restrict when it
comes to the use of water. What is your position, and what reasons will you give to support your
position? Position: Farmers should be allowed to continue using the amount of water regulated by
the government as an appropriate amount of water to use under drought conditions. Without enough
water farmers would not be able to carry out their duties of providing food for the country and
protecting the environment. Reasons to support my position: Farmers grow the food that feeds the
people of California and many other states. They do not use large amounts of water to fulfill
personal needs. Instead they use the water to grow food that is shared with many other people.
Farmers care about the environment in which they make their living. With a poor environment,
farmers would have a more difficult time growing food and keeping their job. They also think about

The Importance Of Sustainability At The California Of The...
The Importance of Sustainability Throughout this course, over the past semester, we have discussed
a variety of ideas and opinions. These ideas include such concepts as science and religion coexisting
together, the origins of life, politics, California being the edge of western civilization, and what my
essay will focus on, sustainability. Much of the latter half of this course focuses on the idea of
ecological sustainability, meaning that there is a limit to the amount of natural recourses we
currently have, so we must conserve and manage the remaining recourses we have left, in order to
protect the environment and have future recourses. This concept will be further elaborated on when I

Additionally, I came to realize that people don't fully understand, or simply don't care about the
repercussions of what their actions may or have caused to the surrounding ecosystem. The desire for
wealth has made individuals numb to the extent of their actions, as long as their actions are
beneficial for themselves. By this I mean that individuals will essentially destroy the planet in order
to get rich, without thinking about what their actions will cause to the local ecosystem. This search
for raw materials in many ways is a double–edged sword, by this I mean that the gold rush has made
California into what it is today, but it has also caused irreducible damage to the environment. This
means of using raw materials can be applied to any location, in which individuals have no other
means to provide for their family, whether their occupation is drilling for oil, mining for ore, or
deforesting for farming. It saddens me to watch most of the world to search for wealth, rather than
preserving the environment for future generations. Moreover, I understand why people in
developing countries destroy the local environment for money, but when the natural recourses
ultimately diminish, what will they be left with? The way the environment is currently being
destructed makes me think of WALL–E, the Earth looked after all the natural recourses were gone
and how no life could even be sustained, aside from a

Struggles of Immigrants and Native Americans
1.
The Mexican government system over the Native Americans introduced the policy of mercantilism.
In this system, merchants and the government based in Mexico partnered to make a strong political
rule over Native Americans. In the process, the colonial government backed the merchants in
exploiting the resources of the native peoples. In exchange, the government took its share in terms
of taxes and duties. The tax that the colonial government earned was used to equip the loyal navy
such that the Mexican would be safe from attacks. The army also sought to expand territories
whenever they wanted (De Montalvo 5). The significant impact of this policy was that the Native
Americans suffered under the spell of poverty as their resources were siphoned to Mexico and other
developing colonies.
The Spanish rulers, who colonized the Native Americans, implemented a policy that the colonists
found hard to follow. They wanted to create a society whereby heredity was the determinant for
ranks. When the Spanish occupied Florida, only five Spanish–born families were in the colony. As
more and more Spaniards arrived, the issue of the rank became paramount than that of the skin tone.
In the meanwhile, they forced the policy of social stratification and succeeded. They, however,
failed to connect rank with the purity of European blood, thus creating a culturally diverse society
(Muir).
Administration of the United States imposed a policy of unrewarded labor to the Native Americans.

How Did The California Gold Rush Affect America
The United States of America is a country deeply rooted in history, shaped by many significant
events over the past several hundred years. From the arrival of Columbus, to the Pilgrims, the
Revolution, the Civil War, both World Wars, and much more, these events have had a great impact
on the future of America. However, one of the most often overlooked yet incredibly significant
events in American history was the California Gold Rush of 1849. The discovery of gold in the
western territories prompted hundreds of thousands of Americans to venture west. These mass
migrations not only had many significant positive and negative impacts, but also created a
prosperous future for the desolate and unforgiving western half of the country. The California ...

The great numbers of settlers moving west due to gold helped create hundreds of new villages, with
many becoming large metropolitan and economic centers such as San Francisco, Sacramento, San
Jose, and Fresno. The gold quickly turned many of these villages into cities that became extremely
important to the American economy. The discovery of the gold came only nine days before the
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, also making this treaty one of the most economically significant
treaties in American history. In addition, the United States Transcontinental Railroad was built
largely on gold money to connect the barren west to the rest of the country, and it ran through
Sacramento and San Francisco as soon as 1863. Now, travel that used to take months to complete
could be done in days, only further stimulating the growing American economy during the industrial
revolution. American production and manufacturing in many different aspects skyrocketed and
helped meet the rising necessary national supply and demand. The quick settlement of the west also
reinforced the idea of Manifest Destiny and made beneficial use of the territory that the United
States acquired in the Mexican–American war. In addition to domestic improvements, the gold rush
also benefited the economy on a global stage, as fast–growing cities in the west created new markets
for food, goods, and other materials. The west would receive imports from South America, Britain,
China, and many more nations in exchange for their precious gold. The California Gold Rush
quickly became one of the most influential economic movements in American history as it further
advanced the nation's standing on both a domestic and international

John Sutter's Gold: The Rise Of The California Gold Rush
On January 23, 1848, James Wilson Marshall was working by California's American River to build a
sawmill for John Sutter. That night, he had water diverted so it could carry away earth and powdered
stone that was there, and the next morning, as he was walking around, he saw a yellow speck in a
shallow pool of water. He picked up several pieces and the next day he took it to his boss, John
Sutter, to be examined. Not long after the gold was discovered, Sam Brannan rode from Sutter's Fort
and started shouting in the middle of the street, "Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!" His
proclamation started a stampede and fever for gold that nearly depopulated the city. People from
different places came in search of gold, they left their farms, trading posts, and even deserted ships.
When the gold rush first started, finding and getting to the gold was easy, you could find pieces of
the precious metal sitting on top of the soil in various places. Gold was so easy to ... Show more

How Did The Vietnam War Impact Society
The Mayflower Compact was the first act to ever take place in what is now, America. I would say
that The Founder's idea of freedom played the biggest role in forming our country, which was
transformed into a inspirational symbol of religious freedom, democracy, and self–government. The
obstacles and struggles that the pilgrims had gone through had left a legacy behind that created the
nation we live in today. If it wasn't for the pilgrims and their fight for freedom, America would not
be the democratic nation that it is today. The Vietnam War had a prodigious impact on America's
society and culture, as a result of being the first war in America to be televised. The war also caused
a crucial influence on the presidential election of 1968. In contrast, many American's felt that the
U.S. being involved in Southeast Asia was fundamentally wrong. In addition, the national debt
skyrocketed at an exceeding rate due to spending's of war. The only larger effect than that was the
death toll. The war killed over 2 million Vietnamese civilians, 1.1 million North Vietnamese troops,
200,000 South Vietnamese troops, and 58,000 U.S. troops. Not only that, it also caused a
widespread of health problems that lasted decades. The Vietnam War is unquestionably one of the ...

The California gold rush of 1848 – 1849 and its results
The lust for gold has existed since long before the birth of Christ, from the pharaohs in old Egypt to
the forty–niners during the California gold rush. Gold has always been considered as a sign of
wealth and because of its rareness and value it has had a big impact on history. The willingness of
people to give up all they have in the pursuit of getting rich has motivated people to leave their
home and to search for fortune; this was one of the reasons why people came to the United States. In
the first colonies people just had one thing in mind which was money, people was out searching for
gold instead of taking care of the colony and doing things necessary for its survival. This is repeated

The California Gold Rush Impact On California 's Environment
The California Gold Rush had a positive impact on California's environment in many different
ways, but along with the positives came the negative impacts. In 1848, people flocked to California
in hope to make their gold filled dreams come true and strike it big, but with the more people
moving to California, the more the population rose, leaving destructive effects on the state's
environment then and for the years to come. California's physical environment was shaped not only
by the influx of people, but also the manmade structures they added and how they manipulated the
state's land to embrace the large population that wasn't there before the Gold Rush hit. With so many
people mining for gold and trying to find as much as they can, new technology was invented to
make the process easier and more efficient. Before this new gold–mining technology, many miners
would dam up rivers to make their findings easier and supply water during dry months, or the rivers
would become blocked with deposits and sediments, effectively changing the rivers for animals and
plants. Along with that, the need for wood and lumber increased so the forest changed with more
and more trees cut down to create canals. The land was essentially torn up just in the miner quest for
gold. With the invention of hydraulic mining came one of the most disastrous effects on the state's
physical environment. Before workers would only dam up rivers, but with this machine,
mountainsides and other areas were torn up,

Water Wars In the Sacramento Bee, an excerpt of Mat Weiser's article "Water Controversies Boil

wars. Although the article was published back in April 26, 2009, it still makes excellent points on
today's water debacle. Weiser informs the public of the situation we have put ourselves in, by our
poor management we have created an international crisis. Since the water of the world belongs to all
of us, it is up to everyone to save and conserve water. Mat Weiser discovered a few years back that
we humans are depleting the fresh water the Earth has given us too quickly. He states that we have
plenty of water needed to survive. However if we keep consuming and wasting the water at the rate
we have been, there will not be enough for the future. He realized that our ignorance of water saving

"However, the problem is poor management of water which results in scarcity and conflict"
(Weiser). We have continued to waste our resources on a daily basis. We have developed the bad
habit of taking an essential of survival such as water for granted. The consequences of our individual
choices of letting the world run dry, have started to affect our towns, states, and nation. The bad

How Water Is An Important For Our Lives
"Thousands have lived without love, not one without water," W.H. Auden says. It is true that water
plays an important in our lives; nobody can survive without water. Importantly, water is a scarce
resource which means that society has insufficient productive resources to meet all citizens' needs.
Once the scarce resource becomes more and more terrified, people will turn to limit the usage. Since
California has been dried for four years continuously and reached near–crisis proportion, on April 1,
2015, Governor Jerry Brown signed an executive order that will restrict urban water usage by 25
percent to deal with the drought (Nagourney). The bill seems to make sense by limiting the water

in Johnson). Technically, farmers use 80 percent of water while cities use 20 percent (Johnson).
However, as Governor Jerry Brown claimed California to reduce water using by 25 percent, he did
not indicate agriculture (Johnson). Yet, Robert Glennon stated that "For California to solve its water
crisis must also come from farmers." Definitely, with a huge water consuming, restricting
agriculture will conserve water more significant water than households' water saving. Glennon
points out that "By my calculations, even a four percent reduction in water consumption could
increase by 50 percent the water available for municipal and industrial uses." Thus, to solve drought,
California should not restrict personal water use, but regulate agriculture instead.
Secondly, wisely using appropriate management, water in agriculture is one of the best ways to
control water instead of restricting personal water use. Agriculture consumes about 80 percent of all
water usages in California, and the primary water consuming in agriculture is irrigation. This
irrigation system helps lands that don't annually receive enough rainfall to be utilized for growing
plants. According to University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Communication

California was a land where the American dream came true for many. Before the gold rush,
California was under the Mexican rule since 1821. At that time, California's population mainly
consisted of about 6,500 Californios, 700 Americans and 150,000 Native Americans. Most of the
Californios lived on vast ranches given to them as land grants by the Mexican government. New
settlers, mainly Americans, started moving into California for land and trade. Mexican control over
California weakened following the Bear Flag revolt by the settlers and the United States took
control of the region. The United States waged war against Mexico for manifest destiny and a

Blue Gold World Water Wars Essay
The documentary, Blue Gold, World Water Wars, was a dramatic depiction of the prognosis of our
ability to sustain life on the earth if we don't take very seriously the natural resource of water. The
movie by Sam Bozzo was released in 2008 and is based on the book Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop
the Corporate Theft of the World's Water by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke. The movie opens with
a dramatic display of what happened to Pablo Valencia who in 1906 walked from Mexico to
California in search of gold. He survived without water for 7 days and documented the experience.
One of the most compelling statements from his experience was the statement, "who ever goes
without water for a week, cries blood." That statement was riveting and came to mind often during
the course of viewing the movie. The filmmaker succeeded in galvanizing my attention with that
opening frame. Bozzo highlights how extensively our ecosystem is being impacted by our
seemingly lackluster regard for the water we have been given on earth. It seems as though some
think water is an infinite resource. Contrarily the movie shows that our abuse of water is
deteriorating water flows and threatening the sustainability of our ecosystem. The planet, human
beings, plants, animals, fish, etc. all need water to survive.

the way to California. Even though, the forty niners got gold at the end, many people died and
California began having disputes because of over population. Undoubtedly, the Gold Rush had a
negative effect overall because many people died of cholera and over population caused disputes.

A Brief Note On The State Water Resources Control Board...
I have been working for two years with the Department of Technology, Statewide Procurement
Division (STPD), conducting Information Technology (IT) procurements projects. During the time I
have been working with STPD, I have learned to lead IT Procurements; review and approve the
Non–Competitively Bids requests, contract amendments, Limit–To Brand requests and Feasibility
Study Report; assist and coordinate contract negotiations. Two of the projects that demonstrate my
ability to provide good customers service skills and team skills are the State Water Resources
Control Board Negotiation and the California Email Services 2 (CES2) project. To successfully
complete my two projects, I have used the following customer service skills and team skills: Active

The Problems Involving Water Management And Resources
There are various issues associated with water in South–Western United States and specifically

Ansel Adams Sea Sequence Analysis
An impactful statement of Ansel Adams the photograph series Sea Sequence is more than a picture
of the California beach in 1940. Several details must be observed when interpreting the simple but
powerful work. At the heart of this irregular picture there lies deep meaning and everyday
interpretation. Sea Sequence is one of many photos by Adams proclaiming a unique message to a
troubled society: go and enjoy nature. Black, white, and gray is the foam of a crashed wave along a
California beach. While the birds–eye–view of the shoot gives us a portion of the beached tide a line
of white foam dangles from the bottom of the top border. There the homecoming of the beached
wave is met with a wall of resistance from a smaller salty surge. Meanwhile, the water retreats back
to its endless body as it curls around protrusions of shell and rock. Mid photo, water spreads itself
out on the dry sand making it stained with darker gray and soggy. At the bottom a dark shadow casts
itself parallel to the bottom border.
The dark shadows create bold lines and vivid contrast. The fanning of the wave as it lays out ...

Adams was living in the mid 1900's when he saw how people were in constant stress and fear from
war and rough times. In the period of this series of photographs world war and worldwide economic
depression was present. Using photography he created black and white images of nature. According
to Susan, he is delivering a message for a better world with his photograph. The picture of a surf on
the California beach was made to help troubled people see beauty in their collapsing world. This
photo begs people to let go of their daily struggles to go and take refuge in the enduring peace and
wonder of nature. His passion for environmentalism was the driving force behind his work (Susan).

The Conservation And Recycling Of Water
Currently California has a terrible water problem, which is causing many people to cease watering
in excess all across the state. The reason California has water problems is that we are emptying our
underground aquifers during a drought that has been going on and many people are still wasting
water on their own personal opportunities. There are many options toward either ending or surviving
the water issue, such as the idea of war to take the water that California needs to survive. Another is
to build a pipeline from a place with extra rainfall annually that California can syphon off for usage.
Another is the option to conserve water across the state and to reuse water as much as possible to
minimize excess water usage. The most viable of these solutions is the conservation and recycling of
water. By conserving and recycling water there is no waste, only recycled water for cleaning dishes,
watering plants, and washing houses and cars. The only foreseeable problem is that the process
cannot be monitored and people are only held by honesty and a promise to do what they can to
conserve water, but the conservation of water seems to be the most affordable, quickly enacted, and
can be done by most families. Also the other options require a higher amount of financial support to
begin and continued maintenance, large spans of time to orchestrate, and would need a lot of
manpower. With the option of water conservation time, money, and manpower is not as high of a
needed factor when

This movie depicts a time in history during the California Water Wars which took place in the Los
Angeles area in the early 1900's pitting farmers from Owens Valley against the city of Los Angeles.
The farmers had been seeking federal funding for a public irrigation project. William Mulholland
who was the head of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power interfered with the farmers
irrigation project. Mulholland built an aqueduct which channeled from Owens River to bring more
water to Los Angeles. In a history class I would use this movie as an example of how the water
company had a strong presence in government and used its power to its own benefit. Students would
then discuss whether or not they believe the influence of large companies has a positive or negative
effect on society. They would then connect their opinions back to examples in the movie and the
Water Wars. I enjoyed watching this movie because it had a plot which was based on real events in
California and gave me the ability to think like a private investigator and try to figure out the

Vietnamese Immigration into the United States
According to the 2010 United States Census, California has the largest Vietnamese population of
581,946 in the United States. Before 1975 there were very few Vietnamese living in the United
States. After the Vietnam War and the fall of Saigon in 1975, many Vietnamese refugees fled
Vietnam resulting in three major waves of immigration. The first and second waves of immigration
played a major role in Vietnamese refugees resettling in California. The last wave in the 1990s
centered on family reunification. Since the 1970s, Vietnamese people escaping communist rule
immigrated to the United States. Later they relocated to California hoping to start a life with many
new opportunities. Attracted to California because of its clean environment, in turn they also
influenced California's agriculture.
Before the first wave of migration, the United States took part in the Vietnam War which started the
first wave of immigration. For over centuries, Vietnam was under Chinese and French controls.
After World War II, the French withdrew from Vietnam and American troops entered with a request
from the South Vietnamese government; who asked for American support and interest against the
North communist. At the time, the Northern region of Vietnam was a communist party. In addition,
the United States agreed and declared that they had to fight against communist power. As a result,
many violent Anti–Vietnam War protests went throughout the United States because many people

Choosing a specific location for both where the film should be shot and where the action happens, is
never coincidental. As a proof for that assumption stands in two films; neo–Noir film Chinatown
(1974) directed by Roman Polanski and documentary Dogtown and Z–Boys (2001) directed by
Stacy Peralta. Both movies relate to various aspects and issues of urban studies and demonstrate
various approaches towards the city, urban environment, and population. In Chinatown, for
example, the movie makers cover the phenomenon of urbanization and it influence on the nearby
territories and settlements. The movie Dogtown and Z–Boys, the issue of adaptive reuse of space is

In Chinatown, for example, the situation of conspiratorial land speculation and corruption is
confirmed by the characters. Because of the powerful system that is able to crush down all those
who rebel, people who struggle for equal access to the spaces and resources are forced to back down
just to stay alive. In the Dogtown and Z–Boys, on the contrary, the viewer observes a positive
outcome of urbanization – re–appropriation of the urban space for the use of a group of locals. In the
other words, the appropriation of swimming pools by skateboarders has become a viable venue to
implement alternative use of the unoccupied spaces in the city that provide a place for activities for
marginal population groups and subcultures and, what is also important, a creation of the

A Resident Of The United States
As a resident of the United States, imagine the nation 's future without water. Land terribly dry and

much water and people fighting over what remains of this extremely important resource. Each group
trying to persuade the other that their need for water is greater. Well, if you are a resident of
California, this is already happening. Farmers, people, and environmentalists all want the water to
be used for different things, the only problem is, there isn't enough. The current drought has
continued for about five years now, with extremely high temperatures and a lack of precipitation.

Farmers should not be restricted any more than they have been already. With the amount of water
they are allowed currently, they will be able to provide food for the country and protect the
environment. Farmers have the responsibility of feeding the country and those in California share a
great deal of that responsibility. Farmers are not only responsible for feeding people, they are also in
touch with the condition of the environment and they do what they can to help preserve it. Farmers
also use their water responsibly by adopting new technology or cutting back on how much food they
produce. The success of the California farmers is vital to the state and the nation; therefore, farmers
should not endure more regulations from the government. The farmers of California provide food to
the people, care about and help the environment, and do not waste water on unnecessary things. In
addition to residents of California, many people throughout the United States depend on the goods
grown in the golden state. The amount of food produced in California goes above what is produced
in any other state. An article published in USA Today stated, "California produces nearly half of the
nation 's fruits, vegetables and nuts" ("Water wars," 2015). These foods account of almost half of the
national supply and if production dropped due to the lack of water, millions of people would be

Environmental Forum, 32(5), 55. Retrieved from http://eds.a.ebscohost.com As the drought in
California continues on its fourth year, many cities have worked hard to incorporate new
technologies to conserve and reuse water and farmers have implemented new strategies to reduce

there, such as fish, birds, and plants, cannot adapt as quickly. Both water rights and drought in the
environment need to be managed in order to lessen the impact on all parties involved and to better
prepare for future drought. I chose this passage because it mentions many of the different groups

The state of California now has better technology to tell how much water is used, helping restrict the
use of water, potentially causing land that has been farmed for many years to stop being farmed. The
governor of the state has received criticism for calling for limits on the use of water in populated
areas, but not on farms. Farmers have been limited more and more each year, making the new
restrictions something that most expected and prepared for by creating reserves and drilling wells;
nonetheless, thousands of acres of farmland will go unfarmed. I chose this article because it offers a

Focus On California And Drought

October 13, 2015 Focus on California and Drought There are many problems with world, but one of
the most difficult problems are global warming and droughts. Global warming leads to droughts,
among other things, and droughts lead to trouble. Droughts are very problematic, because they can
lead to fire hazards, low food cropping, and many other things. Drought is the absents or shortage of
water and water is an absolute must have in the world. There are so many problems because of
drought and people need to find solutions the problems. Climate change affects many factors
associated with drought. Beyond direct economic impacts, a drought can threaten drinkable water
supplies and entire ecosystems, and can even add to increased food prices. California has had the
driest year on record recently. There are different types of drought. Drought can thought as dry,
cracked earth; low water levels, such as lakes and stuff; and barren fields, but these are examples of
different types of drought, each of which is measured differently. Meteorological drought, which is
very specific to the area as average precipitation, may vary considerably spatially. This is a most
often thought of as drought in comparison to precipitation, assessing the degree of dryness (in
relation to a local or area average) and the duration of the dry period. A concern of farmers is

A Modern State And Public Water Systems
A modern state is a set of organisations and institutions related to the function of the government; its
role is to provide order, policy, revenue, internal and external representation, and services.1 When
the state fails to govern the commons, that is, the land or resources affecting the whole community,
private companies take over. Within the past several decades privatization of the freshwater sources
and public water systems is widespread worldwide. Yet, private companies provide water guided by
the principle of the financial gain and not based on the equal distribution paradigm, and such
approach makes poverty–stricken suffer the most, while the wealthy remain intact. In California, the
region of the world having the seventh largest world 's economy,2 billionaires "hoard water in the
"water banks" that have been quietly gifted to them by the government."3 These water–bank–
systems allow to accumulate water in the underground reservoirs for water–bank holders ' needs or
for purpose of leasing.4 One such system, Kern Water Bank, a thirty square miles of marshland
filled with flocks of birds,5, is used to water pomegranate trees, a key ingredient in production of the
fruit–drink by POM–Wonderful, a company owned by the billionaires Stewart and Lynda Resnick.6

Introduction Of Industrial Revolution And The War Of 1812
Introduction of Industrial Revolution in United States:
The Industrial Revolution resulted in a shift from agriculture to industrial factories. In the United
States, there were two phases of the Industrial Revolution. The first revolution, which happened
between 1776 and 1789, was somewhat similar to Britain 's Industrial Revolution and more
political. The second phase of the American Industrial Revolution which happened from 1860 to
1900, was not only political but also was the great development of economic and society. The
Industrial Revolution first began in North America. This location was very important for the
sparking of the revolution because the railroad , which was one of the causes of industrialization,
was built here.
The Historical Catalysts of Industrial Revolution: The Embargo Act and the War of 1812:
In the early 1800s, the Napoleonic Wars between Britain and France challenged the neutrality of the
United States. Britain and France created trade restrictions which was not only peaking others'
economies but also disrupting American trade. Therefore, President Thomas Jefferson decided to
announce the Embargo Act of 1807, which supported Americans producing their own goods because
it banned the trade of foreign goods. Not long after the Embargo act, the War of 1812 changed the
Americans' thoughts about industrialization. During the War of 1812, Americans wanted Britain to
draw their soldiers out of United States and stop supplying guns and ammunitions

Drastic Changes Throughout The Management Of The World ` S...
Drastic changes in the management of the world`s water supply is necessary to prevent a severe
global water deficit. According to the World Water Development Report, 70 percent of the water
used today goes to agriculture. To meet future demands, it is estimated that agricultural production
must increase by 60 percent in 2050, worldwide. Already today hundreds of millions of people lack
access to safe and reliable water sources. However, the UN believe there's hope of recovery if water
resources are managed in a different way. "The fact is that there is enough water to meet the world 's

Boundary Issues Between Mexico And The United States
Boundary Issues between Mexico and the United States
The United States and Mexico share a boundary line that has many complex issues that are in
constant flux. Both countries are dependent on each other for safety and economics. In addition,
both countries have had conflicts in the past that include the Mexican American War and revolutions
that have bled into each other's territory. This essay's goal is to demonstrate the boundary issues
between the United States and Mexico. These issues include an ambiguous border line, water rights,
and environmental issues. These matters are a pressing concern because they create hostilities
between the governments and citizens of each country.
On April 25th 1846 a war started between the United States and Mexico. Known as the Mexican–
American War, it lasted for almost two years. The United States invaded Mexico and the war ended
with peace talks. The peace talks resulted in The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The agreement gave
United States ownership of what is now known as California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and
Utah. The Rio Grande river was designated as the boundary line that separated Texas from Mexico.
Moreover, the boundary between Arizona/New Mexico and Mexico was ambiguous between the
two countries. These boundary issues led to conflicts and was later resolved with the Gadsden
Purchase of 1853. Subsequently, these border disputes were consistent. In the late nineteenth century
the Rio Grande river shifted and Chamizal fell

African American Racism
A poet named Langston Hughes once asked, "How long I got to fight both Hitler and Jim Crow?"
Throughout history African Americans have been a marginalized community that have faced an
immense amount of racial violence and discrimination. From slavery, to Jim Crow, to racial
inequalities, African Americans have never had a time period where they felt accepted and safe.
During WWII African Americans fled the South and settled in California to escape the racial
violence and discrimination that they were facing . However, African American's lives did not
change when they arrived to California because they still faced calamities in industrial cities and in
the work force. When African Americans escaped the South to start their new life in California,
racism and discrimination followed them into industrial cities. When living in the South, African
Americans faced difficulty in housing. According to an article called "Great Migration", "housing
tensions in the South increased, and African Americans dealt with rising rents in segregated areas."
African Americans in the South had to juggle both the struggle of Jim Crow and keeping their
families under a safe roof. Migrating to California seemed like an escape from the constant torment
they faced, however African Americans were disappointed to find that the discrimination they faced
in the South was prevalent in California as well. In the book, Competing Visions. A History of
California, the authors stated that, "in California there

The rising costs of land and the simultaneous costs of water make it so 30% of farm households
have negative income. The cost of sustainability, such a new tilling methods and access to water,
also strains farms. This often leads to farmers self–exploiting themselves to try to generate the most
crops possible and cultivate their land to the fullest extent.
The most prevalent ongoing dynamic that encourages the self–exploitation of farmers in the Central
Valley is the CSA movement. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is when, "Members support
a farm by paying in advance, and in return they receive a share of the farm's produce; members also
share in production risks, such as a low crop harvest following unfavorable weather." While 54% of
these farms in California make a profit, 32% and 15% either break even or lose profit. They tend to
be more successful than traditional farms in California because they be closer to and cater to
wealthy urban areas like the Bay Area who are willing to pay more in support of CSA endeavors,
organic products, and local businesses. Also the farms tend to have more white owners and workers
and come into their venture with more capital, which enable them to proceed to have successful
business plans, a strong voice of advocacy, and higher average gross sales per acre. CSA businesses

Knowledge In California Water Wars By Josh Viers

  • 1. Knowledge In California Water Wars By Josh Viers What is knowledge and why is it important? According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, knowledge can be defined as "the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association..." ("Knowledge"). While this definition is quite straightforward, there is some implications behind this definition. Knowledge can be a powerful tool that can be used to stop bad things from happening or to foster good things, depending on how the knowledge understood is used and applied. Throughout the entirety of Core, knowledge has been the foundation of every unit, something that has been constantly lectured on and discussed in the discussion sections. Usually, the more something is talked about, the more important that something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only should we want to make a change, we are obligated to make a change. One such case includes the gold rush of 1858. Peggy O'Day lectured on the gold rush and how our actions had monumental effects on the environment then and how those actions still have a lasting impact on the environment now. Peggy delved into how our excessive use of water and destruction of the landscape led to widespread issues of water pollution and water scarcity. By flooding the hillsides and then taking the sediment and releasing it in the river, the water was rendered unfit for drinking. Many small towns relied on these rivers as a main source of drinking water and were thus put in a state of panic because of the dearth of clean water. Furthermore, the mining process required a lot of timber, so miners exploited the forests and cut down nearly one–third of all the timber (O'Day). Not only did the mining process kill a lot of vegetation, but it also forced animals to leave their habitats, placing those animals in danger of facing starvation and potential extinction. Many of these destroyed habitats and ecosystems can still be seen today, which serves as a reminder of how we should and need to make changes to how we do things. Peggy implicitly implied in her lecture that we need to not only be cognizant of how mining works, but also be aware of the fact that we cannot make the same mistakes with ... • 3. 1. What Are The Flaws Of Human Nature? Although one would acquire good morals, such as having sympathy and caring for others, it is shown throughout history the flaws of human nature. Humans are forced to make decisions that destroy other humans. It is shown in history that greed would cloud a human's judgment, and casualties occurred due to wars. Some humans are forced to make decisions that negatively affect the environment people live in. For example the destruction of forests living organisms, the pollution of water, and air clearly demonstrate the true destructive nature of some human beings. Even though most humans would know that doing the "right" thing should be the correct choice, in order to benefit alone some humans make selfish choices. Human nature is flawed in which some people make selfish decisions that would cause harm to others and the environment. Classification put certain races in the Human's flawed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Martha Conklin, a professor of Engineering, claimed that "water is not being used correctly in California, thus effecting nature negatively, and can lead to war." Because water is always readily available, we often take for granted water and don't think how much water is wasted when we take extra long showers or leave the faucet leaking. Using water wastefully however comes at large price. Here in California water is readily available but only at the cost of harming nature. As a result there are predictions for mega floods and earthquakes with history making amplitudes. In addition Conklin claims that " In the last 20 years spring has come two weeks earlier." Evidence such as this suggest that our wastefulness is impacting our environment negatively and thus puts many people at risk of a natural disaster occurring. In order for the wealthier to have easier and more access to water, we have put the larger population in California in danger by increasing the chances of a natural ... • 5. The Nature Of Science, Agriculture Practices, Fracking And... Human beings are very fortunate to be living on Earth. Even though humans get everything we need from these precious lands, we always feel that we have to modify it. Reshaping our world to make it more suitable for individuals is not the way to go. Humans have the desire for scientific process, and are driven to make the world a better place; though in reality, the outcomes of our environment and our selves say otherwise. Our ways of science, agriculture practices, fracking and irrigation practices, ways of mining, inventions of plastics, and even our advancement in technology is leading us to the consequences of not only hurting our species, but our environment as a whole. People believe that mankind will learn to utilize Earth's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a living thing, a celebration of human fallibility" (Thomas 304). Our discovery of science has changed over the years. At first it was seen as a systematic study of nature, but it has now come to a point where our source of inspiration has become abused, and it 's taking a toll on our home. Scientific advancement plays a major role to the reason why our world has become greedy and wealthy. For example: fossil fuels, pollution, greenhouse gasses, advance weaponry (nuclear), and even modern technology is destroying the environment we live in. None of the examples were apparent in nature, until man mistreated the original uses of science. This proves that science is politics, and it is shaped by ideological plan by the user (science is a technique). We must prevent the misuses of science, because it is too late to stop progressing and go back to living in nature. Our misuse of science lead to the technique of hydraulic mining, which was used for the quest of gold in Sacramento, where these companies used enormous water cannons, called "monitors", to annihilate large hills and small mountains. Once gold is removed, left over detritus found their way to the streams, which then flows into the larger waterways to the Sacramento River, that supplied a portion of the water. This resulted in the Sacrament River carrying too much silt, which was hazardous for the people to consume. This later caused floods in Sacramento to occur, which the ... • 7. California Water Wars Research Paper The California Water Wars were a series of conflicts between the city of Los Angeles and farmers and ranchers in the Owens Valley. As Los Angeles grew in the late 19th–century, it started to outgrow its water supply. Fred Eaton, mayor of Los Angeles, realized that water could flow from Owens Valley to Los Angeles via an aqueduct. The aqueduct construction was overlooked by William Mulholland and was finished in 1913. The water rights were acquired through political fighting and deceiving people. Z alley, into the aqueduct. • 9. Oil And Almonds: The New Guns And Butter? Oil and Almonds: The New Guns and Butter? During the 1930s, the United States was crippled by a severe economic depression that lasted a decade. In this time, nearly one in five Americans were out of work, factories, machinery and other capital were going unused. The United States was operating inside its production possibilities curve and many resources were going to waste. However, the start of World War II sparked the United States' economy. The demand for American munitions increased resulting in job growth; thus, the demand for consumer goods, like butter, also increased. This phenomenon, often referred to as the Guns and Butter model, demonstrates how two seemingly unrelated goods could contribute to or reflect economic growth. To better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Any number of consumer goods could be associated with oil to form another Guns and Butter type model, but almonds are perhaps the most ideal comparison. Suzanne McGee, a journalist for The Guardian, discuses the "looming conflict" between those who want to use water for fracking and those who want to use water for irrigation. In her article, McGee reports that Ken County, California is home to the "sixth largest oil area" in the country and the production of oil in that area is due to hydraulic fracking, which requires large amounts of water to be effectively removed from the water cycle. Additionally, this area is home to many farmers who require significant amounts of water for irrigation purposes (McGee). • 11. Farmers Use Water For Drought Stricken California Develop Your Argument Worksheet Introduction What is your topic or issue? Farmers use of water in drought stricken California Who is your audience? The people living in urban areas of California Why should your audience care about your topic? Is there some common ground in this topic which all parties agree is important? All groups agree that there is a need for food, but the people of California do not want the farmers to continue to receive unrestricted amounts of water. They should care about this topic because they buy their food from the farmers that they want to restrict when it comes to the use of water. What is your position, and what reasons will you give to support your position? Position: Farmers should be allowed to continue using the amount of water regulated by the government as an appropriate amount of water to use under drought conditions. Without enough water farmers would not be able to carry out their duties of providing food for the country and protecting the environment. Reasons to support my position: Farmers grow the food that feeds the people of California and many other states. They do not use large amounts of water to fulfill personal needs. Instead they use the water to grow food that is shared with many other people. Farmers care about the environment in which they make their living. With a poor environment, farmers would have a more difficult time growing food and keeping their job. They also think about the species that might be in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Importance Of Sustainability At The California Of The... The Importance of Sustainability Throughout this course, over the past semester, we have discussed a variety of ideas and opinions. These ideas include such concepts as science and religion coexisting together, the origins of life, politics, California being the edge of western civilization, and what my essay will focus on, sustainability. Much of the latter half of this course focuses on the idea of ecological sustainability, meaning that there is a limit to the amount of natural recourses we currently have, so we must conserve and manage the remaining recourses we have left, in order to protect the environment and have future recourses. This concept will be further elaborated on when I write about the Assembling California reading by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, I came to realize that people don't fully understand, or simply don't care about the repercussions of what their actions may or have caused to the surrounding ecosystem. The desire for wealth has made individuals numb to the extent of their actions, as long as their actions are beneficial for themselves. By this I mean that individuals will essentially destroy the planet in order to get rich, without thinking about what their actions will cause to the local ecosystem. This search for raw materials in many ways is a double–edged sword, by this I mean that the gold rush has made California into what it is today, but it has also caused irreducible damage to the environment. This means of using raw materials can be applied to any location, in which individuals have no other means to provide for their family, whether their occupation is drilling for oil, mining for ore, or deforesting for farming. It saddens me to watch most of the world to search for wealth, rather than preserving the environment for future generations. Moreover, I understand why people in developing countries destroy the local environment for money, but when the natural recourses ultimately diminish, what will they be left with? The way the environment is currently being destructed makes me think of WALL–E, the Earth looked after all the natural recourses were gone and how no life could even be sustained, aside from a ... • 17. Struggles of Immigrants and Native Americans 1. The Mexican government system over the Native Americans introduced the policy of mercantilism. In this system, merchants and the government based in Mexico partnered to make a strong political rule over Native Americans. In the process, the colonial government backed the merchants in exploiting the resources of the native peoples. In exchange, the government took its share in terms of taxes and duties. The tax that the colonial government earned was used to equip the loyal navy such that the Mexican would be safe from attacks. The army also sought to expand territories whenever they wanted (De Montalvo 5). The significant impact of this policy was that the Native Americans suffered under the spell of poverty as their resources were siphoned to Mexico and other developing colonies. The Spanish rulers, who colonized the Native Americans, implemented a policy that the colonists found hard to follow. They wanted to create a society whereby heredity was the determinant for ranks. When the Spanish occupied Florida, only five Spanish–born families were in the colony. As more and more Spaniards arrived, the issue of the rank became paramount than that of the skin tone. In the meanwhile, they forced the policy of social stratification and succeeded. They, however, failed to connect rank with the purity of European blood, thus creating a culturally diverse society (Muir). Administration of the United States imposed a policy of unrewarded labor to the Native Americans. Each Native ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. How Did The California Gold Rush Affect America The United States of America is a country deeply rooted in history, shaped by many significant events over the past several hundred years. From the arrival of Columbus, to the Pilgrims, the Revolution, the Civil War, both World Wars, and much more, these events have had a great impact on the future of America. However, one of the most often overlooked yet incredibly significant events in American history was the California Gold Rush of 1849. The discovery of gold in the western territories prompted hundreds of thousands of Americans to venture west. These mass migrations not only had many significant positive and negative impacts, but also created a prosperous future for the desolate and unforgiving western half of the country. The California ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The great numbers of settlers moving west due to gold helped create hundreds of new villages, with many becoming large metropolitan and economic centers such as San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, and Fresno. The gold quickly turned many of these villages into cities that became extremely important to the American economy. The discovery of the gold came only nine days before the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, also making this treaty one of the most economically significant treaties in American history. In addition, the United States Transcontinental Railroad was built largely on gold money to connect the barren west to the rest of the country, and it ran through Sacramento and San Francisco as soon as 1863. Now, travel that used to take months to complete could be done in days, only further stimulating the growing American economy during the industrial revolution. American production and manufacturing in many different aspects skyrocketed and helped meet the rising necessary national supply and demand. The quick settlement of the west also reinforced the idea of Manifest Destiny and made beneficial use of the territory that the United States acquired in the Mexican–American war. In addition to domestic improvements, the gold rush also benefited the economy on a global stage, as fast–growing cities in the west created new markets for food, goods, and other materials. The west would receive imports from South America, Britain, China, and many more nations in exchange for their precious gold. The California Gold Rush quickly became one of the most influential economic movements in American history as it further advanced the nation's standing on both a domestic and international ... • 21. John Sutter's Gold: The Rise Of The California Gold Rush On January 23, 1848, James Wilson Marshall was working by California's American River to build a sawmill for John Sutter. That night, he had water diverted so it could carry away earth and powdered stone that was there, and the next morning, as he was walking around, he saw a yellow speck in a shallow pool of water. He picked up several pieces and the next day he took it to his boss, John Sutter, to be examined. Not long after the gold was discovered, Sam Brannan rode from Sutter's Fort and started shouting in the middle of the street, "Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!" His proclamation started a stampede and fever for gold that nearly depopulated the city. People from different places came in search of gold, they left their farms, trading posts, and even deserted ships. When the gold rush first started, finding and getting to the gold was easy, you could find pieces of the precious metal sitting on top of the soil in various places. Gold was so easy to ... • 23. How Did The Vietnam War Impact Society The Mayflower Compact was the first act to ever take place in what is now, America. I would say that The Founder's idea of freedom played the biggest role in forming our country, which was transformed into a inspirational symbol of religious freedom, democracy, and self–government. The obstacles and struggles that the pilgrims had gone through had left a legacy behind that created the nation we live in today. If it wasn't for the pilgrims and their fight for freedom, America would not be the democratic nation that it is today. The Vietnam War had a prodigious impact on America's society and culture, as a result of being the first war in America to be televised. The war also caused a crucial influence on the presidential election of 1968. In contrast, many American's felt that the U.S. being involved in Southeast Asia was fundamentally wrong. California Gold Rush Research Paper The California gold rush of 1848 – 1849 and its results The lust for gold has existed since long before the birth of Christ, from the pharaohs in old Egypt to the forty–niners during the California gold rush. Gold has always been considered as a sign of wealth and because of its rareness and value it has had a big impact on history. The willingness of people to give up all they have in the pursuit of getting rich has motivated people to leave their home and to search for fortune; this was one of the reasons why people came to the United States. In the first colonies people just had one thing in mind which was money, people was out searching for gold instead of taking care of the colony and doing things necessary for its survival. • 27. The California Gold Rush Impact On California 's Environment The California Gold Rush had a positive impact on California's environment in many different ways, but along with the positives came the negative impacts. In 1848, people flocked to California in hope to make their gold filled dreams come true and strike it big, but with the more people moving to California, the more the population rose, leaving destructive effects on the state's environment then and for the years to come. California's physical environment was shaped not only by the influx of people, but also the manmade structures they added and how they manipulated the state's land to embrace the large population that wasn't there before the Gold Rush hit. With so many people mining for gold and trying to find as much as they can, new technology was invented to make the process easier and more efficient. Before this new gold–mining technology, many miners would dam up rivers to make their findings easier and supply water during dry months, or the rivers would become blocked with deposits and sediments, effectively changing the rivers for animals and plants. Along with that, the need for wood and lumber increased so the forest changed with more and more trees cut down to create canals. The land was essentially torn up just in the miner quest for gold. With the invention of hydraulic mining came one of the most disastrous effects on the state's physical environment. Before workers would only dam up rivers, but with this machine, mountainsides and other areas were torn up, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Water Controversies Boil Over By Mat Weiser: Article Analysis Water Wars In the Sacramento Bee, an excerpt of Mat Weiser's article "Water Controversies Boil Over" shines some light on one of the biggest environmental issues we struggle with today: water wars. Although the article was published back in April 26, 2009, it still makes excellent points on today's water debacle. Weiser informs the public of the situation we have put ourselves in, by our poor management we have created an international crisis. Since the water of the world belongs to all of us, it is up to everyone to save and conserve water. Mat Weiser discovered a few years back that we humans are depleting the fresh water the Earth has given us too quickly. He states that we have plenty of water needed to survive. However if we keep consuming and wasting the water at the rate we have been, there will not be enough for the future. • 31. How Water Is An Important For Our Lives "Thousands have lived without love, not one without water," W.H. Auden says. It is true that water plays an important in our lives; nobody can survive without water. Importantly, water is a scarce resource which means that society has insufficient productive resources to meet all citizens' needs. Once the scarce resource becomes more and more terrified, people will turn to limit the usage. Since California has been dried for four years continuously and reached near–crisis proportion, on April 1, 2015, Governor Jerry Brown signed an executive order that will restrict urban water usage by 25 percent to deal with the drought (Nagourney). The bill seems to make sense by limiting the water when it becomes scarce. This order will affect some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... in Johnson). Technically, farmers use 80 percent of water while cities use 20 percent (Johnson). However, as Governor Jerry Brown claimed California to reduce water using by 25 percent, he did not indicate agriculture (Johnson). Yet, Robert Glennon stated that "For California to solve its water crisis must also come from farmers." Definitely, with a huge water consuming, restricting agriculture will conserve water more significant water than households' water saving. Glennon points out that "By my calculations, even a four percent reduction in water consumption could increase by 50 percent the water available for municipal and industrial uses." Thus, to solve drought, California should not restrict personal water use, but regulate agriculture instead. Secondly, wisely using appropriate management, water in agriculture is one of the best ways to control water instead of restricting personal water use. Agriculture consumes about 80 percent of all water usages in California, and the primary water consuming in agriculture is irrigation. This irrigation system helps lands that don't annually receive enough rainfall to be utilized for growing plants. Most of the Californios lived on vast ranches given to them as land grants by the Mexican government. New settlers, mainly Americans, started moving into California for land and trade. Blue Gold World Water Wars Essay The documentary, Blue Gold, World Water Wars, was a dramatic depiction of the prognosis of our ability to sustain life on the earth if we don't take very seriously the natural resource of water. The movie by Sam Bozzo was released in 2008 and is based on the book Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop the Corporate Theft of the World's Water by Maude Barlow and Tony Clarke. The movie opens with a dramatic display of what happened to Pablo Valencia who in 1906 walked from Mexico to California in search of gold. He survived without water for 7 days and documented the experience. One of the most compelling statements from his experience was the statement, "who ever goes without water for a week, cries blood." That statement was riveting and came to mind often during the course of viewing the movie. The filmmaker succeeded in galvanizing my attention with that opening frame. Bozzo highlights how extensively our ecosystem is being impacted by our seemingly lackluster regard for the water we have been given on earth. It seems as though some think water is an infinite resource. Contrarily the movie shows that our abuse of water is deteriorating water flows and threatening the sustainability of our ecosystem. • 47. The Conservation And Recycling Of Water Currently California has a terrible water problem, which is causing many people to cease watering in excess all across the state. The reason California has water problems is that we are emptying our underground aquifers during a drought that has been going on and many people are still wasting water on their own personal opportunities. There are many options toward either ending or surviving the water issue, such as the idea of war to take the water that California needs to survive. Another is to build a pipeline from a place with extra rainfall annually that California can syphon off for usage. Another is the option to conserve water across the state and to reuse water as much as possible to minimize excess water usage. The most viable of these solutions is the conservation and recycling of water. By conserving and recycling water there is no waste, only recycled water for cleaning dishes, watering plants, and washing houses and cars. The only foreseeable problem is that the process cannot be monitored and people are only held by honesty and a promise to do what they can to conserve water, but the conservation of water seems to be the most affordable, quickly enacted, and can be done by most families. Also the other options require a higher amount of financial support to begin and continued maintenance, large spans of time to orchestrate, and would need a lot of manpower. With the option of water conservation time, money, and manpower is not as high of a needed factor when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Furthermore, one must know the United States' hydrological history in order to gain manipulation upon the system that makes it both thrive and deteriorate. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. A Modern State And Public Water Systems A modern state is a set of organisations and institutions related to the function of the government; its role is to provide order, policy, revenue, internal and external representation, and services.1 When the state fails to govern the commons, that is, the land or resources affecting the whole community, private companies take over. Within the past several decades privatization of the freshwater sources and public water systems is widespread worldwide. Yet, private companies provide water guided by the principle of the financial gain and not based on the equal distribution paradigm, and such approach makes poverty–stricken suffer the most, while the wealthy remain intact. In California, the region of the world having the seventh largest world 's economy,2 billionaires "hoard water in the "water banks" that have been quietly gifted to them by the government."3 These water–bank– systems allow to accumulate water in the underground reservoirs for water–bank holders ' needs or for purpose of leasing.4 One such system, Kern Water Bank, a thirty square miles of marshland filled with flocks of birds,5, is used to water pomegranate trees, a key ingredient in production of the fruit–drink by POM–Wonderful, a company owned by the billionaires Stewart and Lynda Resnick.6 Ironically, Kern Water Bank Authority, technically a public agency, is subsidized by the Paramount Farming Company, a company with world 's largest pistachio and almond production, which is also owned by the Resnicks. ... • 67. Introduction Of Industrial Revolution And The War Of 1812 Introduction of Industrial Revolution in United States: The Industrial Revolution resulted in a shift from agriculture to industrial factories. In the United States, there were two phases of the Industrial Revolution. The first revolution, which happened between 1776 and 1789, was somewhat similar to Britain 's Industrial Revolution and more political. The second phase of the American Industrial Revolution which happened from 1860 to 1900, was not only political but also was the great development of economic and society. The Industrial Revolution first began in North America. This location was very important for the sparking of the revolution because the railroad , which was one of the causes of industrialization, was built here. The Historical Catalysts of Industrial Revolution: The Embargo Act and the War of 1812: In the early 1800s, the Napoleonic Wars between Britain and France challenged the neutrality of the United States. Britain and France created trade restrictions which was not only peaking others' economies but also disrupting American trade. Therefore, President Thomas Jefferson decided to announce the Embargo Act of 1807, which supported Americans producing their own goods because it banned the trade of foreign goods. Not long after the Embargo act, the War of 1812 changed the Americans' thoughts about industrialization. During the War of 1812, Americans wanted Britain to draw their soldiers out of United States and stop supplying guns and ammunitions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Drastic Changes Throughout The Management Of The World ` S... Drastic changes in the management of the world`s water supply is necessary to prevent a severe global water deficit. According to the World Water Development Report, 70 percent of the water used today goes to agriculture. To meet future demands, it is estimated that agricultural production must increase by 60 percent in 2050, worldwide. Already today hundreds of millions of people lack access to safe and reliable water sources. However, the UN believe there's hope of recovery if water resources are managed in a different way. "The fact is that there is enough water to meet the world 's needs. But not without a dramatic change in the way water is used, managed and shared", said Michel Jarraud, head of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Global Almond Market vs. California`s Water Drought Significant stakeholders: State legislators and regulators – New knowledge and technology can challenge old regulations, and too often these systems are inconsistent with each other. States should synchronize their regulations with adjacent jurisdictions in order to create better efficiency. Adjusting to excessive amounts of standards is preventing companies to pursue innovation and improvement (Source). The U.S Water Sector – Serving as the largest in the world, it has shockingly acted quite reactive rather than proactive in adopting new innovations in the water industry. Their approach is conservative, and major investments are geared towards clean energy rather than new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Boundary Issues Between Mexico And The United States Boundary Issues between Mexico and the United States The United States and Mexico share a boundary line that has many complex issues that are in constant flux. Both countries are dependent on each other for safety and economics. In addition, both countries have had conflicts in the past that include the Mexican American War and revolutions that have bled into each other's territory. This essay's goal is to demonstrate the boundary issues between the United States and Mexico. These issues include an ambiguous border line, water rights, and environmental issues. These matters are a pressing concern because they create hostilities between the governments and citizens of each country. On April 25th 1846 a war started between the United States and Mexico. Known as the Mexican– American War, it lasted for almost two years. The United States invaded Mexico and the war ended with peace talks. The peace talks resulted in The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The agreement gave United States ownership of what is now known as California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. The Rio Grande river was designated as the boundary line that separated Texas from Mexico. Moreover, the boundary between Arizona/New Mexico and Mexico was ambiguous between the two countries. These boundary issues led to conflicts and was later resolved with the Gadsden Purchase of 1853. Subsequently, these border disputes were consistent. In the late nineteenth century the Rio Grande river shifted and Chamizal fell ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. African American Racism A poet named Langston Hughes once asked, "How long I got to fight both Hitler and Jim Crow?" Throughout history African Americans have been a marginalized community that have faced an immense amount of racial violence and discrimination. From slavery, to Jim Crow, to racial inequalities, African Americans have never had a time period where they felt accepted and safe. During WWII African Americans fled the South and settled in California to escape the racial violence and discrimination that they were facing . However, African American's lives did not change when they arrived to California because they still faced calamities in industrial cities and in the work force. When African Americans escaped the South to start their new life in California, racism and discrimination followed them into industrial cities. When living in the South, African Americans faced difficulty in housing. According to an article called "Great Migration", "housing tensions in the South increased, and African Americans dealt with rising rents in segregated areas." African Americans in the South had to juggle both the struggle of Jim Crow and keeping their families under a safe roof. Migrating to California seemed like an escape from the constant torment they faced, however African Americans were disappointed to find that the discrimination they faced in the South was prevalent in California as well. In the book, Competing Visions. A History of California, the authors stated that, "in California there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Farming In The Central Valley Of California While the Midwest may be "the breadbasket of the United States," the Central Valley of California is the entire rest of the Thanksgiving meal on the table for the country. With its fertile soil, Mediterranean climate, and expansive flat land, the Central Valley produces more than 250 different crops that produce more than $20 billion annually, meaning it provides over half the produce grown in the United States. Recent droughts, recession, and growing urbanization in California have changed the conversation around farming practices and the large role family farms still play in the state. Popular opinions circulating the urban areas were calling into question the sacrifices farms were making throughout the drought, believing they got a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rising costs of land and the simultaneous costs of water make it so 30% of farm households have negative income. The cost of sustainability, such a new tilling methods and access to water, also strains farms. This often leads to farmers self–exploiting themselves to try to generate the most crops possible and cultivate their land to the fullest extent. The most prevalent ongoing dynamic that encourages the self–exploitation of farmers in the Central Valley is the CSA movement. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is when, "Members support a farm by paying in advance, and in return they receive a share of the farm's produce; members also share in production risks, such as a low crop harvest following unfavorable weather." While 54% of these farms in California make a profit, 32% and 15% either break even or lose profit. They tend to be more successful than traditional farms in California because they be closer to and cater to wealthy urban areas like the Bay Area who are willing to pay more in support of CSA endeavors, organic products, and local businesses. Also the farms tend to have more white owners and workers and come into their venture with more capital, which enable them to proceed to have successful business plans, a strong voice of advocacy, and higher average gross sales per acre. CSA businesses though ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
