The Great Depression By Milton Freidman And Paul Samuelson
Introduction: Background Information
The Great Depression is defined as an era of hardship and was the "economic downturn in the
history of the Western industrialized world" . The United States was predominantly affected by the
Great Depression, soon after stock market crash of October 1929. This fiscal crisis sent Wall Street,
the center of economics in New York into a state of prolonged recession that affected foreign
economies.
In the next few years in America, unemployment increased immensely, consumer and investor
spending decreased and by 1933, "the Great Depression had reached its nadir as some 13–15 million
Americans were unemployed and nearly half of the country's banks had collapsed."
Since its occurrence, The Great Depression has sparked debates among economists and perhaps the
most accurately represented are from a television debate in 1969. Two economists, Milton Freidman
and Paul Samuelson presented their positions on the Depression. Friedman, believed it "had a single
cause: errors in carrying out monetary policy in the United States." Samuelson argued "it was the
result of a series of historical accidents." These opinions are quite famous when referring to this
topic, but many economists, such as Mr. Charles Kindleberger, believes there are more factors that
should be taken into consideration.
Part A: Identification of the Thesis
The World in Depression 1929–1939 provides further insight on the Great Depression and the
fundamental inquiry that

The United States And The Great Depression
To Americans, Australia may seem like a completely distant and disconnected land just because of
how far it is and because it is technically and island. However, the fact of the matter is that
Australia, just like most of the places colonized by Great Britain, is still considered a western
country. That along with the interconnectedness of a globalized economy makes it so that Australia
is still affected, both positively and negatively, by the changes of the United States and Britain. Such
was the case when the United States suffered what is now known as the great depression in 1929.
The great depression spread throughout most western countries and beyond and Australia was no
exception. Australia was hit with the depression not long after the United States and it reached its
peak in 1932. The depression hit Australia quite hard and the economic recovery was fairly slow and
lasted until just about the beginning of the Second World War. This was partly due to having a
number of badly implemented policies by a disputing government. While some say that it was the
Premiers ' Plan that led the country out of the depression others argue that there was no one single
policy or plan responsible but rather a combination of many. One act that had a hand in leading
Australia out of the great depression was the devaluation of the currency.
Explanation of chosen theory:

General Idi Amin Dada And The Act Of Killing
In both documentaries, General Idi Amin Dada and The Act of Killing, the authors spent a
considerable amount of time with the perpetrators of mass murder. In The Act of Killing Joshua
Oppenheimer gets access to the executioners, gangsters and paramilitary leaders who carried out
millions of mass killings. In General Idi Amin, Barbet Schroeder spent time with the third Ugandan
President and one of the greatest mass murderers, Idi Amin Dada. Schroeder was able to document
his firsthand account of events. These documentaries demonstrate the kind of extraordinary access
the authors were given and their ability to document the unspeakably painful truth.
In both documentaries, the perpetrators seem to have the impression that they are in control of the
documentary. For instance, in The Act of Killing, the executioners set up every scene playing as
victim and perpetrators, and even going as far as hiring other locals to play as victims. They acted as
if they were the producers of the film by creating the conditions, like choosing costumes, applying
makeup, and setting up the villages to burn them down. Throughout the documentary, the
executioners directed the content and edited the scenes. Likewise, Anwar Congo, one of the most
brutal executioner, took the responsibility of sitting in the director 's chair. He exclaimed that it is
important to tell the story of the killings in a step by step process. This shows how the author is
skillfully suggesting to viewers that the film is

Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power
Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed
upon them. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These
dictators typically rule through fear, and don't usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever
it takes to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a
ruler who abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence.
Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no
education, but quickly found his place in the world. He joined the King's African Rifles (KAR) and
quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in
1962. He had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military.
After a few assassination attempts, Obote began to question Amin's loyalty and ordered his arrest.
When the leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the
government with blood, which isn't surprising due to his reputation (History.com).
Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off
by executing members of the Acholi and Lango tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up
agencies to eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. Within his rule he expelled Uganda's entire
Asian population, resulting in a collapse of the economy as manufacturing,

Paradise Lost By John Milton
Paradise Lost was written by John Milton in an effort to explain why, and how, the Fall of Man
occurred; but he does this not by reiterating the biblical Genesis story, but by providing readers with
an imaginative and poetic re–creation of the story. He is able to retell the story, "Fall of Man," while
also expressing his own perspective and personal truths through the characters. Milton also seems to
meet most, if not all, of the epic poem conventions, with this epic, consisting of over ten thousand
lines. While reading this epic, it is clear that it was not only the Genesis story that persuaded Milton
's writing, but there were many other sociohistorical contexts, perspectives and criteria that helped
form Paradise Lost. In order for any literary work to be considered part of a certain genre, it must
meet certain conventions that would be found within said genre. When reading Paradise Lost I
noticed many of these conventions to be present. For example, an epic usually deals with a serious
subject in relation to that society. There is usually always some type of hero, who has a significant
importance to the story. These conventions are met by the epic being about God, the hero of
importance, and by the subject being that of Religion. Another epic convention that I find to be in
extreme relation to Paradise Lost, is that the character 's success or failure can arbitrate the future for
many people. This is apparent due to the fact the Adam and Eve 's decisions will end up

Revenge on Mankind In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, the being created by Victor Frankenstein has
been cast out due to his horrid appearance and the gruesome way in which he came to be. The
monster finds refuge in a hovel next to a small family living in Germany. One day he notices a
leather satchel in the yard, he quickly gathers the satchel and its contents and returns to his hovel.
The bag contained strictly books, one of them being John Milton's "Paradise Lost". After observing
the family for some time, he attains the ability to read and speak. With this ability he reads all the
books within the bag, and feels a profound connection between himself and Satan in "Paradise
Lost". Similar to the monster, Satan was cast out of heaven after betraying God by planning a revolt
against him. Both characters were formed, cast out, and betrayed by their creators, due to differing
circumstances. However, in the wake of their rejections they both vow revenge on mankind. Victor
Frankenstein creates his creature in a makeshift laboratory that he constructed in his apartment. He
gathered bits and pieces of body parts from multiple corpses to produce the ideal being. However, it
caused Victor a great deal of agony to see the creature in its animate form. The creature was
immediately cast out by Victor and fled from the apartment and into the forest. The creature seeks
refuge in the hovel, and through a peephole in the wall;

Allusions to Paradise Lost in Frankenstein
In the nineteenth century gothic novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses numerous allusions within
her novel that can easily be interpreted by the reader. These allusions make it easier for readers to
understand the characters and compare their circumstances throughout the story. The most
significant and most used was from John Milton's epic Paradise Lost. It is known that, "...Paradise
Lost stands alone in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries atop the literary hierarchy, and Milton's
epic is clearly rooted in the history of Puritanism and in the bourgeois ideal of the individual, the
'concept of the person as a relatively autonomous self–contained and distinctive universe'" (Lamb
305). This book has numerous parallels that readers can easily interpret to Frankenstein. Victor
Frankenstein and his monster can both be identified with several characters from Paradise Lost.
Among these characters are Adam, Eve, Satan, and God. Paradise Lost is even mentioned in the
novel, after the monster that Victor creates reads the epic as if it was a history book. The Creature
states, "But Paradise Lost excited different and far deeper emotions. I read it, as I had read the other
volumes which had fallen into my hands, as a true history. It moved every feeling of wonder and
awe that the picture of an omnipotent God warring with his creatures was capable of exciting"
(Shelley 124). He is able

The Non Citizen Asian Population Of Uganda
Imagine being given only 90 days to pick up your life and leave a place you call home. The Non–
Citizen Asian population of Uganda was given only three months, ninety days to be precise, to leave
the country. Later Asians who were Ugandan citizens were also expelled. Idi Amin's reasoning for
expelling 60,000 Asians from Uganda is still unclear. There are many theories put forth, but they
remain mere speculation. As a result of Idi Amin's erratic behavior, jingoism, and ruthlessness,
Uganda's economic ultimately suffered to this day from this act. In 1971, President Idi Amin
demanded a review of Uganda's Asian community citizenship. In August of 1972, he decreed that all
Punjab Asians residing in Uganda must leave. The deadline to leave ... Show more content on

Eventually, this resulted in the Asians dominating the entire economy in post–colonial Uganda;
ultimately creating tensions with the Africans. They had always been the target of resentment in
Uganda; once Amin came into power, he acted upon this tension. Many erratic announcements in
the span of a few days targeted various groups. The first proclaimed, "All Asians holding Indian,
Pakistan, and Bangladesh passports must leave." Few took this announcement seriously until Amin
signed the decreed. Many were astonished by this and did not want to believe it. This is because
when Amin came to power, he made the working conditions better and many of the Asians who
were in the business industry. Another announcement followed, adding, "All non–citizen Asians,
even those holding Kenyan, and Tanzanian passports must leave. Again, many could not believe
what was occurring. These announcements were life shattering, especially when it was apparent to
both the Africans and Asian that Amin was serious. Next, came an announcement exempting
professional Asians from explosion, this was received with trepidation. This last announcement
drove a wedge between the Professional and non–professional Asian communities. The
professionals opted to leave voluntarily. Yet another announcement proclaimed that no matter Asian
persuasion one claimed, he or she had to leave. All the back and forth announcements added to the

Life of Idi Amin Essay
Idi Amin was a soldier first and foremost. He imposed a scheduled and militaristic way of life on his
followers. His own military record paints the picture of his rise to power. During British
colonization of Uganda Idi Amin began his endeavor into the military. It was in 1946 that Amin
enlisted in the King's African Rifle's, KAR, the British army in colonized Africa. (Boddy–Evans)
Upon his entry he was placed as assistant cook, a far from glorious position. However he managed
to rise through the ranks. He became a Corporal in 1948 and was stationed in Burma, Somalia, and
Kenya. This was during the British situation in Kenya that was referred to as the Mau Mau revolt.

He did so out of fear of being taken out by Obote because he was seen as a threat to the ex–
presidents authority. Secondly he performed a coup because he acknowledged that he was capable
of gaining a higher status of power. Though there were some attempts on Amin's administration he
remained in office from 1971–1979. (Boddy–Evans) Idi Amin's time in office was seen as the
bloodiest times in his countries history. Like most dictators he ruled with fear. His crimes against
humanity are well documented and anything that isn't is still spread through word of mouth. It was
these erratic actions that lead to the downfall of the Ugandan economy. (Idi Amin Killer File)
Obote, the man Amin helped into power prior to his own coup, had a positive effect on the economy.
Obote declared a strong national economy with little foreign dependence. Unlike Amin's
administration, these types of statements were not propaganda. In the years of Obote's financial
independence there was an 11% GDP growth in the economy. However Amin's administration left
the country at a negative 0.6% GDP. (Luganda)
Amin was welcomed by most western states such as the United Kingdom and Israel. He was seen as
a gentle giant and worthy of going into business with. This was in part due to the fact

Fear And Distrust : Two Major Vices Essay
Fear and Distrust: Two Major Vices in Frankenstein
Many readers keep returning to Frankenstein, a science fiction by Mary Shelley, "to find ways of
imaging their deepest fears," yet I believe, on a bigger proportion, the book also illustrates the deep
distrust among human beings, represented by their presumptions about others' evil characters which
are not true (Cantor 231). Admittedly, these two qualities, fear and distrust, often exist together,
because fear always produces distrust, presumptions, and thus hatred, but I will discuss them
separately. As a result of the two vices, Frankenstein tells Walton a false moral on the former one's
death bed,
Avoid ambition, even if it be only the apparently innocent one of distinguishing yourself in science
and discoveries. Yet why do I say this? I have myself been blasted in these hopes, yet another may
succeed. (Shelley 224)
Frankenstein asserts this moral because he himself cannot succeed but has paid a heavy price for his
ambition; however, his experience is not any evidence or proof for others' failures. In this essay, I
shall point out the two deadly vices that cause Frankenstein and his family's final destruction– I
shall do this by offering examples, illustrating that we should criticize human fears and condemn
our presumptions about others' characters, which are the real "monsters" in this novel– without these
two evil qualities, success of ambitions may become possible. In the end, I shall also form a
comparison between

To What Extent Were The Social Policies Of The Idi Amin...
To what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to
Uganda's colonial past? This is the question that this essay endeavors to answer as it scrutinizes the
social policies issued by Idi Amin Dada's administration throughout his eight year long reign over
Uganda. This essay will analyze the events of Idi Amin's rule from 1971 to 1979 as a response to the
decade prior to Uganda's independence in 1962 and the interim period between them from 1962 to
1971. It is made apparent that Idi Amin's response to the issues within his society were by in large
fueled by the lingering distaste he had for the effects that British involvement in Ugandan affairs
had left on the nation. The British introduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These origins stemmed from the late 19th century to the early 20th century when the British first
began to colonize Uganda with the help of Asians but didn't intensify until the fifties when classism
and racism became a growing issue. These concerns would grow potentially destructive in the
sixties when Britain worked alongside Idi Amin to overthrow Milton Obote and then a reality in the
70's when these issues were addressed with severity. Links between Idi Amin's ruthless social
policies and Uganda's colonial past became apparently negative which posed the query, to what
extent were these social policies a detrimental response? The focus of this piece is to illustrate the
extent to which Idi Amin's social policies, issued in varying degree from 1971 to 1979, served as an
overwhelmingly detrimental and negative response to a time when Britain ceased greater control
and influence over Uganda. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation
that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and substantial social reform for nearly a decade.
Instead a subservient military overtook the Ugandan parliament in an attempt to force a self–
interested agenda upon its diverse population. The question to investigate then becomes, "to what
extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's
colonial past?"

Milton Friedman 's Philosophy, Consumption Analysis, And...
Milton Friedman was a respected economist that posited numerous new ideologies within the
economic realm during the 20th century. In 1976, Friedman was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize
in Economic Sciences for his examination of monetary history and philosophy, consumption
analysis, and the theory of stabilization policy. Another theme Friedman is generally known for is
his position with respect to the responsibilities of corporations. He had expressed that "few trends
could so thoroughly undermine the very foundations of our free society as the acceptance by
corporate officials of a social responsibility other than to make as much money for their
stockholders as possible" (Chandler and Werther Jr., 2014, p. xxxii). By this, Friedman is saying that
maximization of property for the sake of shareholder return jeopardizes and subverts the possibility
of corporations acting ethically and socially responsibly. He does not trust that their fundamental
center inside their operations ought to be focused on the part of corporate social obligation. Not at
all like individuals, Friedman trusts that an organization cannot have an obligation. They have one
obligation and that is to make a profit (Friedman, 2013). No we will look at the different balances,
counterbalances, and threats to social corporate responsibility. These elements, based off their
motivation, can be ordered into two or three distinct gatherings, which are revenue driven
associations, not–for–profits, and governments.

Essay about Frankenstein Allusions
In the gothic novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley weaves an intricate web of allusions through her
characters' expedient desires for knowledge. Both the actions of Frankenstein, as well as his monster
allude to John Milton's Paradise Lost. Book eight of Milton's story relates the tale of Satan's
temptation and Eve's fateful hunger for knowledge. The infamous Fall of Adam and Eve introduced
the knowledge of good and evil into a previously pristine world. With one swift motion sin was
birthed, and the perfection of the earth was swept away, leaving pain and malevolence in its wake.
The troubles of Victor Frankenstein begin with his quest for knowledge, and end where all end:
death. The characters in Frankenstein are a conglomeration of those ... Show more content on

As he begins to understand his misplacement in the world he exclaims, "Was I, then, a monster, a
blot upon the earth, from which all men fled and whom all men disowned? [...] I tried to dispel
[these reflections], but sorrow only increased with knowledge" (123). Just as the attainment of
knowledge led to a loss of innocence in Frankenstein, the monster's naivety was lost as well. Both
characters can be likened to Eve and "The Fall" which occurred as she ate the forbidden fruit. After
the monster attains knowledge, he symbolizes the death of innocence with the murder of William,
blameless himself. Immediately following the loss of innocence and the gain of knowledge in the
soul of the monster, he becomes analogous to Satan, God's enemy, in Paradise Lost. "I gazed upon
my victim, and my heart swelled with exultation and hellish triumph" (144), he states as William
lies dead at his feet. The monster even recognizes that he is like Satan. He says, "I ought to be they
Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel [Satan], whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed" (103).
Just as the monster parallels Frankenstein in his quest for knowledge, he also does so in his being as
Satan. He is the personification of the devil that is inside all in the form of sin. The monster and the
devil share an experience in which it is obvious that one parallels the other. In igMalice, and with

Victor, like Satan does not consider the ramifications of his actions. He "ardently desired
knowledge" in an attempt to become more than his father, his creator (of sorts) even if it lead to his
destruction. The word "ardently" is typically a feminine and irrational feeling conveying his
recklessness and contrasting the rationality of science causing the reader to question Victor's ability
as a scientist or creator. In Milton's works Eve never interacts with god. The women in
Frankenstein, Walton's sister and Elizabeth are kept away from the main story and the action; they
are used mostly as narrative or plot devices: the sister as giving someone for Walton to write to and
Elizabeth as a companion and then catalyst for Victor and the Monster's chase. The narrator of
Paradise Lost describes Adam as created for God, and Eve as created for Adam, and that she was
designed for the purpose of companionship much like Elizabeth's depiction. Although the gender
imbalances of Paradise Lost are based on the current societal ideologies and those of the bible,
Shelley's depiction (or lack thereof) can been seen to suggest their importance in the creation of life.

Ambition and the Downfall of Macbeth, Idi Amin, and,...
Ambition is a force that helps drive societies forward. When the power of a nation falls in the hands
of a single person ambition takes many spectacular and ugly forms. It can be both the making and
destruction of that person but regardless of the net effect, ambition will have deep socio–economic,
political, and cultural roots. Three dictators were taken by ambition and it pushed them into a costly,
long, battle to obtain and maintain power. Those leaders are Macbeth, Idi Amin, and, Napoleon
Bonaparte. Macbeth is the main character in Shakespeare's Macbeth. Macbeth was born into low
ranking nobility and rose to fame as a general. He did so well in the military that he became the

Macduff one of the nobles leaves the county to organize a revolt against Macbeth. Macbeth has

Amin In Uganda Research Paper
Idi Amin rose to power in 1971 through a violent military coup. Amin and his army successfully
overthrew Uganda's former president Milton Obote with the foreign aid from both the British and
Israeli Government. From the British Amin received aid through large amounts of money being sent
to his personal bank account and from the Israelis he received arms. Amin's success at gaining and
holding power was largely based on foreign assistance. "Amin's regime survived as long as it did in
part because it always found one or another imperialist power to patronise it" (Fall of Idi Amin 1).

The economic embargo that was instituted as well as the negative perception around Amin caused
Uganda to fail economically and to have no foreign powers want to help because they did not want
to be seen as supporting a cruel leader. Amin's brutal regime caused countries to look down at
Uganda as a place that was uncivilized and that was not worth any ones time. Through all Amin's
missteps and failures his inability to run a successful country without foreign support was his
biggest weakness. He was not able to have good relations with countries either because of rash
decisions which offended those countries or because of bad public image led to a country to weak to
sustain itself. Amin's final attack on Tanzania was a failure and he was forced to leave Uganda and
seek refuge in Saudi Arabia for the rest of his life. "In the span of eight years, Amin had devastated
Uganda. The economy was in ruins, foreign trade had dried up, and the country had fallen into a
state of lawlessness and brutality" (Idi Amin 1). The rule of Idi Amin was characterized by brutality

Mary Shelley 's Frankenstein : A Modern Prometheus
Allusions in Frankenstein: A Modern Prometheus Mary Shelley's cautionary horror tale,
Frankenstein: A Modern Prometheus, portrays the deadly consequences of callous indifference to
life. Throughout the novel, Shelley employs allusions to the Prometheus myth, Paradise Lost, and
"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Through these allusions, Shelley illustrates the creature's
yearning for love and acceptance, and Victors lack of love and compassion which leads to his
ultimate destruction. In the first place, Shelley alludes to Greek mythology, the Prometheus myth, to
demonstrate Victor's creation of life and feelings for his creature. Shelley writes, "Who shall
conceive the horrors of my secret toil as I dabbled among the unhallowed damps of the grave or
tortured the living animal to animate the lifeless clay?" (Shelley, 45). Victor gathered parts of human
anatomy taken from graves for his creation, but Shelley reminds us of Prometheus by pointing out
the words "lifeless clay." Hence, Prometheus created humans out of clay, shaping them into small
figures. Once again, Shelley resorts to an allusion to the myth by saying, "I collected the instruments
of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet"
(Shelley, 48), referring to how Victor infused life into his creation through galvanism. In a like
manner in the myth, the Greek goddess Athena, Zeus's daughter, venerated the figures that
Prometheus had created and breathed on them

The essay will conclude by revealing through the use of evidence which was the dominant factor in
the speech in gaining support
Economic Pressure was used in the speech regularly to show the large division between the rich and
the poor. The speaker refers to 'the rich unnaturally elevated', 'weight of taxation, misrule and
oppression'. 'Destitution in horrid form stalks through street, lane and thourghfare' 'emaciated
frames'. The terminology reflects on the economic pressures that the poor endured, high tax and
poor working conditions that often led to illness and death. He emphasised how the richer of the
society, the aristocracy, were 'in exclusive possession of power'. This speech would have stirred the
emotions of the crowds as they heard how hard their lives were to those belonging to the upper
classes. The speaker creates horrid, desperate images of the poorer classes 'insufferable despair,' toll
of the death–bell' to highlight how hard their lives were. (Briggs, 1959, P.50) a secondary source
reflected how Chartism 'seems to have been strongest in the two kinds of places... centres of
decaying or contracting industry' and 'new or expanding single industry towns'. Briggs 's writing
shows that Chartism was prominent in only certain areas such as those of industry. Whereas, 'almost
non–existent in completely agricultural villages'.

From the time Idi Amin came to power in Uganda until the time his regime fell, his brutal rule
negatively impacted Uganda in every aspect of its existence. In 1971, Idi Amin along with military
support, ousted Prime Minister Milton Obote while he was out of the country in Singapore attending
a Commonwealth summit meeting with many other leaders of African and European countries. Over
the course of his violent reign, Idi Amin killed between 100,000 and 300,000 of his own people and
doomed the economy with the expulsion of those of Asian nationality. Many of his victims were

Not only did Amin harm Uganda by killing a lot of its population, he also was the cause of an
almost complete economic collapse, when, in 1972, he declared an "economic war" on the Asian
population in Uganda. Uganda's economy relied heavily on its Asian population because they ran
most of the manufacturing and trade sectors as well as making up a large portion of the civil service.
Amin's order of expulsion for the Asian population gave them three months to exit Uganda. They
were given British passports and the businesses they left behind were turned over to Amin's
supporters. Amin not only decimated the population of Uganda during his despotic reign but caused
the economy to falter and fail as well. As his reign of terror went on, news of Amin's crimes and
atrocities began surfacing internationally, spurring retaliatory actions from countries all over the
world. The United States as well as the United Kingdom, Japan, France, the Netherlands, and West
Germany played a large role in Uganda's trading by being the largest exporters of their coffee. The
United States exported the most, being responsible for 75% of all the coffee exported by Uganda. In

Paradise Lost
Throughout time, John Milton's Paradise Lost has been studied by many people and comprehended
in many different fashions, developing all kinds of new interpretations of the great epic. There have
been many different interpretations of this great epic. Milton's purpose in writing the epic was to
explain the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Although the epic is similar to the Bible story in many
ways, Milton's character structure differs from that of the Bible's version. All through out the epic
Milton describes the characters in the way he believes they are. In book II of Paradise Lost, Milton
portrays Satan as a rebel who exhibits certain heroic qualities, but who turns out not to be a hero.

"In the forefront of the battle, where we expect him, is Milton's Satan, the great rebel of Paradise
Lost" (Hamilton 7). Hamilton also introduces the idea of an underdog, describing Satan as a person
fighting against an inferior power, with extreme odds against a victory for his side (14). In the
scenes around the battle in heaven, Milton shows how Satan is viewed as a leader by the other fallen
angels.
<br>
<br>There are other speeches of war in the epic that arouse the reader. One of the most significant is
after Satan has made a meeting in the new Capitol of Hell, Pandemonium. "To have built Heaven
high towers; Nor did he scape By all his engines but was headlong sent With industrious crew to
build in Hell" (Milton 55). Following the rapid building, all the fallen angels gather for their
meeting asking shall it be war or peace. "Their rising all at one was as the sound Of thunder heard
remote. Towards him they bend With awful reverence prone, and as a god" (Milton 79). When his
followers cheer Satan on, the reader notices how much he likes the attention. This is another sign of
how Milton shows the significant role that Satan's pride plays in his decisions. In many different
encounters Satan lets his pride interfere with his actions. In doing this, Satan begins to worry only
about himself and the opinions his followers hold of him. Satan continues with the speech saying,
"Should we again provoke Our Stronger, some worse way his wrath may find

Idi Amin ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 during that time a lust for power, crippling paranoia, and
constant threats to his authority turned Amin into an authoritarian leader who ultimately took the
lives of over 300,000 Ugandans. Amin's quest for power, egoism, and corruption was instrumental
in Amin's creation of the Ugandan state during his rule. Amin used common "state building"
techniques such as the social identity theory (SIT) and in/out group hypothesis. Amin used his
Ugandan identity and his poor upbringings to connect with the people of Uganda. Amin also vested

Garrigan In Idi Amin
Haile Selassie Emperor of Ethiopia was famously quoted as saying "Throughout history, it has been
the inaction of those who could of acted; the indifference of those who should have known better;
the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to
triumph." This quote could relate no more so than in the novel The Last King Of Scotland with the
protagonist Nicholas Garrigan who continually takes no action against the atrocities he hears and
witness whilst he is Idi Amin's personal physician. We can view Garrigan in two different
perspectives one being that he is a good person who did nothing or the other being he is a good
person that did bad things.
The novel is a memoir of Nicholas Garrigan, a young scottish doctor who moves to uganda in 1971
seeking adventure. He begins work at a small hospital in Mbarara however he soons moves to

his position to step in and take action or to keep himself safe. He once again faces a moral dilemma

The Course of Political Development in Uganda and its Effect on Economic Development
Development has recently become a new buzz word in international relations. Through an
exploration of political, social and economic development around the globe, scholars are trying to
understand which policies are most beneficial, and why certain policies are effective and why some
fail. The connection between different types of development is often an important part of this
research as well. The connection between political and economic development is of specific interest
since the end of the Cold War and the failure of most communist–based systems. The emergence of

Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the
relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from
Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability
that Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development.
To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to
examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a
protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of
forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence
in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's
Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the
UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY
was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under
British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP
and increased the political power of Milton Obote.
At independence in 1962, Obote, of the UPC, was appointed Prime

Essay on Ancient Rome and Cleopatra
Cleopatra Read the following passage carefully at least twice. What does it tell us about Plutarch's
view of the relationship between Antony and Cleopatra? For Plutarch peoples actions, however trite,
were great indications of a person's moral character (Plutarch, 1914, p. 225). We can, therefore,
assume that Plutarch would have placed great importance on the everyday activities of Cleopatra
and Antony in reflecting the character of their relationship. Plutarch wrote 150 years after the events
of Cleopatra and Antony and was therefore heavily influenced by Roman views of, not only, the
couple themselves but also by Roman's understanding and expectations of relationships, gender and
race. Plutarch highlights the inseparability of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So in Plutarch's eyes, Antony has failed to live up to his male role within the relationship. Roman's
believed that "A man's whole being is moulded by the habits of his daily life" (Moohan, 2008. p.
27). To Plutarch, Antony's activities such as fishing indicates Antony's failure to live up to his
honorable rank as a Roman general. He is clearly inferior to the man he once was when he hunted
"cities, realms, and continents" (Plutarch, in AA100 Assignment Booklet, 2011, p.17). At times,
Plutarch shows more concern with Antony's behaviour than Cleopatra's. Antony's actions are
described as "mad follies" and, although Cleopatra participates, it is Antony's actions that lack
reason, not hers (Plutarch, in AA100 Assignment Booklet, 2011, p.17). Romans viewed Egyptian
way of life as inferior and "barbaric" compared to the civility of Roman culture as was reiterated by
many Roman historians such as Cassius Dio (Moohan, 2008. p. 27). Therefore, Plutarch is more
concerned with Antony's actions as he expects more from a Roman man. As a woman and an
Egyptian, Plutarch does not have such high expectations of Cleopatra hence why he is less focussed
on her. This passage underlines the relationship's negative influence on Antony and highlights the
power dynamics of the relationship. Cleopatra is in control and outwits Antony, whereas he is
powerless and idiotic. Plutarch makes sense of Antony's behaviour with a

What is Heaven without Hell? in Paradise Lost by John Milton
Paradise Lost by John Milton thrives off the implicit and explicit aspects of Hell offered by the
narrator and the physical and psychological descriptions offered by various characters. Their
separate perspectives coincide to expose the intentions of Milton and the purpose Hell serves in this
epic poem. Each character adds a new element to the physical and psychological development of
this alternative world. The narrator and Satan provide the greatest insight into the dynamics of this
underworld by attempting to redress the issues of accommodation. The similarities and differences
between Heaven and Hell give meaning to Hell physical and emotional presence. As the audience
analyzes the physical descriptions of Hell given in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Initially, the narrator only offers physical descriptions of hell. The narrator portrays hell as "A
Dungeon horrible, on all sides round / As one great Furnace flam'd, yet from those flames / No light,
but rather darkness visible / Serv'd only to discover sights of woe, / Regions of sorrow, doleful
shades," (Paradise Lost, Book I, lines 61–5). The audience is introduced to a new land that evokes
misery from every angle. Yet, in order to comprehend why the narrator fosters such a specific,
horrid description of Hell, it is imperative to understand who the narrator truly is. The epic poem is
told through a third person omniscient perspective. Therefore, the narrator severs as an external
observer who is able to give us the thoughts and feeling of each character present in the epic poem.
This is crucial to the audience because it allows for the exposure of a character's internal
perspective. The audience is able to contemplate and predict the plot and gain information the other
characters are not immediately exposed to themselves. During conversation, the narrator is able to
reveal the inner thoughts of all characters. This is especially important in regards to Satan's first
interaction with Zephon as he caught intruding in paradise. The narrator states, "Abashed the devil
stood/ And felt how awful goodness is and saw/ Virture in her shape how lovely, saw and pined/ His
loss, but chiefly to find here observed/ His luster

The Great Depression By Milton Freidman And Paul Samuelson

  • 1. The Great Depression By Milton Freidman And Paul Samuelson Introduction: Background Information The Great Depression is defined as an era of hardship and was the "economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world" . The United States was predominantly affected by the Great Depression, soon after stock market crash of October 1929. This fiscal crisis sent Wall Street, the center of economics in New York into a state of prolonged recession that affected foreign economies. In the next few years in America, unemployment increased immensely, consumer and investor spending decreased and by 1933, "the Great Depression had reached its nadir as some 13–15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half of the country's banks had collapsed." Since its occurrence, The Great Depression has sparked debates among economists and perhaps the most accurately represented are from a television debate in 1969. Two economists, Milton Freidman and Paul Samuelson presented their positions on the Depression. Friedman, believed it "had a single cause: errors in carrying out monetary policy in the United States." Samuelson argued "it was the result of a series of historical accidents." These opinions are quite famous when referring to this topic, but many economists, such as Mr. Charles Kindleberger, believes there are more factors that should be taken into consideration. Part A: Identification of the Thesis The World in Depression 1929–1939 provides further insight on the Great Depression and the fundamental inquiry that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The United States And The Great Depression To Americans, Australia may seem like a completely distant and disconnected land just because of how far it is and because it is technically and island. However, the fact of the matter is that Australia, just like most of the places colonized by Great Britain, is still considered a western country. That along with the interconnectedness of a globalized economy makes it so that Australia is still affected, both positively and negatively, by the changes of the United States and Britain. Such was the case when the United States suffered what is now known as the great depression in 1929. The great depression spread throughout most western countries and beyond and Australia was no exception. Australia was hit with the depression not long after the United States and it reached its peak in 1932. The depression hit Australia quite hard and the economic recovery was fairly slow and lasted until just about the beginning of the Second World War. This was partly due to having a number of badly implemented policies by a disputing government. While some say that it was the Premiers ' Plan that led the country out of the depression others argue that there was no one single policy or plan responsible but rather a combination of many. One act that had a hand in leading Australia out of the great depression was the devaluation of the currency. Explanation of chosen theory: To first understand the situation that Australia was in during the great depression and all of the events that lead to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. General Idi Amin Dada And The Act Of Killing In both documentaries, General Idi Amin Dada and The Act of Killing, the authors spent a considerable amount of time with the perpetrators of mass murder. In The Act of Killing Joshua Oppenheimer gets access to the executioners, gangsters and paramilitary leaders who carried out millions of mass killings. In General Idi Amin, Barbet Schroeder spent time with the third Ugandan President and one of the greatest mass murderers, Idi Amin Dada. Schroeder was able to document his firsthand account of events. These documentaries demonstrate the kind of extraordinary access the authors were given and their ability to document the unspeakably painful truth. In both documentaries, the perpetrators seem to have the impression that they are in control of the documentary. For instance, in The Act of Killing, the executioners set up every scene playing as victim and perpetrators, and even going as far as hiring other locals to play as victims. They acted as if they were the producers of the film by creating the conditions, like choosing costumes, applying makeup, and setting up the villages to burn them down. Throughout the documentary, the executioners directed the content and edited the scenes. Likewise, Anwar Congo, one of the most brutal executioner, took the responsibility of sitting in the director 's chair. He exclaimed that it is important to tell the story of the killings in a step by step process. This shows how the author is skillfully suggesting to viewers that the film is ... • 4. Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed upon them. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators typically rule through fear, and don't usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it takes to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler who abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence. Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no education, but quickly found his place in the world. He joined the King's African Rifles (KAR) and quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in 1962. He had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military. After a few assassination attempts, Obote began to question Amin's loyalty and ordered his arrest. When the leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the government with blood, which isn't surprising due to his reputation (History.com). Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off by executing members of the Acholi and Lango tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up agencies to eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. Within his rule he expelled Uganda's entire Asian population, resulting in a collapse of the economy as manufacturing, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Paradise Lost By John Milton Paradise Lost was written by John Milton in an effort to explain why, and how, the Fall of Man occurred; but he does this not by reiterating the biblical Genesis story, but by providing readers with an imaginative and poetic re–creation of the story. He is able to retell the story, "Fall of Man," while also expressing his own perspective and personal truths through the characters. Milton also seems to meet most, if not all, of the epic poem conventions, with this epic, consisting of over ten thousand lines. While reading this epic, it is clear that it was not only the Genesis story that persuaded Milton 's writing, but there were many other sociohistorical contexts, perspectives and criteria that helped form Paradise Lost. In order for any literary work to be considered part of a certain genre, it must meet certain conventions that would be found within said genre. When reading Paradise Lost I noticed many of these conventions to be present. For example, an epic usually deals with a serious subject in relation to that society. There is usually always some type of hero, who has a significant importance to the story. These conventions are met by the epic being about God, the hero of importance, and by the subject being that of Religion. Another epic convention that I find to be in extreme relation to Paradise Lost, is that the character 's success or failure can arbitrate the future for many people. This is apparent due to the fact the Adam and Eve 's decisions will end up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Analysis Of Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein ' Madison Franklin English 203 Echols 20 October 2014 Revenge on Mankind In Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, the being created by Victor Frankenstein has been cast out due to his horrid appearance and the gruesome way in which he came to be. The monster finds refuge in a hovel next to a small family living in Germany. One day he notices a leather satchel in the yard, he quickly gathers the satchel and its contents and returns to his hovel. The bag contained strictly books, one of them being John Milton's "Paradise Lost". After observing the family for some time, he attains the ability to read and speak. With this ability he reads all the books within the bag, and feels a profound connection between himself and Satan in "Paradise Lost". Similar to the monster, Satan was cast out of heaven after betraying God by planning a revolt against him. Both characters were formed, cast out, and betrayed by their creators, due to differing circumstances. However, in the wake of their rejections they both vow revenge on mankind. Victor Frankenstein creates his creature in a makeshift laboratory that he constructed in his apartment. He gathered bits and pieces of body parts from multiple corpses to produce the ideal being. However, it caused Victor a great deal of agony to see the creature in its animate form. The creature was immediately cast out by Victor and fled from the apartment and into the forest. • 10. Allusions Of John Milton 's ' Frankenstein ' Brandon McCormick Ms. Headley English 2013 8 December 2014 Allusions to Paradise Lost in Frankenstein In the nineteenth century gothic novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses numerous allusions within her novel that can easily be interpreted by the reader. These allusions make it easier for readers to understand the characters and compare their circumstances throughout the story. The most significant and most used was from John Milton's epic Paradise Lost. It is known that, "...Paradise Lost stands alone in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries atop the literary hierarchy, and Milton's epic is clearly rooted in the history of Puritanism and in the bourgeois ideal of the individual, the 'concept of the person as a relatively autonomous self–contained and distinctive universe'" (Lamb 305). This book has numerous parallels that readers can easily interpret to Frankenstein. Victor Frankenstein and his monster can both be identified with several characters from Paradise Lost. Among these characters are Adam, Eve, Satan, and God. Paradise Lost is even mentioned in the novel, after the monster that Victor creates reads the epic as if it was a history book. The Creature states, "But Paradise Lost excited different and far deeper emotions. I read it, as I had read the other volumes which had fallen into my hands, as a true history. It moved every feeling of wonder and awe that the picture of an omnipotent God warring with his creatures was capable of exciting" (Shelley 124). He is able ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Fear And Distrust : Two Major Vices Essay Fear and Distrust: Two Major Vices in Frankenstein Many readers keep returning to Frankenstein, a science fiction by Mary Shelley, "to find ways of imaging their deepest fears," yet I believe, on a bigger proportion, the book also illustrates the deep distrust among human beings, represented by their presumptions about others' evil characters which are not true (Cantor 231). Admittedly, these two qualities, fear and distrust, often exist together, because fear always produces distrust, presumptions, and thus hatred, but I will discuss them separately. As a result of the two vices, Frankenstein tells Walton a false moral on the former one's death bed, Avoid ambition, even if it be only the apparently innocent one of distinguishing yourself in science and discoveries. Yet why do I say this? I have myself been blasted in these hopes, yet another may succeed. (Shelley 224) Frankenstein asserts this moral because he himself cannot succeed but has paid a heavy price for his ambition; however, his experience is not any evidence or proof for others' failures. In this essay, I shall point out the two deadly vices that cause Frankenstein and his family's final destruction– I shall do this by offering examples, illustrating that we should criticize human fears and condemn our presumptions about others' characters, which are the real "monsters" in this novel– without these two evil qualities, success of ambitions may become possible. Links between Idi Amin's ruthless social policies and Uganda's colonial past became apparently negative which posed the query, to what extent were these social policies a detrimental response? The focus of this piece is to illustrate the extent to which Idi Amin's social policies, issued in varying degree from 1971 to 1979, served as an overwhelmingly detrimental and negative response to a time when Britain ceased greater control and influence over Uganda. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and substantial social reform for nearly a decade. He had expressed that "few trends could so thoroughly undermine the very foundations of our free society as the acceptance by corporate officials of a social responsibility other than to make as much money for their stockholders as possible" (Chandler and Werther Jr., 2014, p. xxxii). Both the actions of Frankenstein, as well as his monster allude to John Milton's Paradise Lost. Book eight of Milton's story relates the tale of Satan's temptation and Eve's fateful hunger for knowledge. The infamous Fall of Adam and Eve introduced the knowledge of good and evil into a previously pristine world. As he begins to understand his misplacement in the world he exclaims, "Was I, then, a monster, a blot upon the earth, from which all men fled and whom all men disowned? [...] I tried to dispel [these reflections], but sorrow only increased with knowledge" (123). Just as the attainment of knowledge led to a loss of innocence in Frankenstein, the monster's naivety was lost as well. Both characters can be likened to Eve and "The Fall" which occurred as she ate the forbidden fruit. After the monster attains knowledge, he symbolizes the death of innocence with the murder of William, blameless himself. Immediately following the loss of innocence and the gain of knowledge in the soul of the monster, he becomes analogous to Satan, God's enemy, in Paradise Lost. "I gazed upon my victim, and my heart swelled with exultation and hellish triumph" (144), he states as William lies dead at his feet. The monster even recognizes that he is like Satan. He says, "I ought to be they Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel [Satan], whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed" (103). Just as the monster parallels Frankenstein in his quest for knowledge, he also does so in his being as Satan. He is the personification of the devil that is inside all in the form of sin. In Milton's works Eve never interacts with god. The women in Frankenstein, Walton's sister and Elizabeth are kept away from the main story and the action; they are used mostly as narrative or plot devices: the sister as giving someone for Walton to write to and Elizabeth as a companion and then catalyst for Victor and the Monster's chase. The narrator of Paradise Lost describes Adam as created for God, and Eve as created for Adam, and that she was designed for the purpose of companionship much like Elizabeth's depiction. Mary Shelley 's Frankenstein : A Modern Prometheus Allusions in Frankenstein: A Modern Prometheus Mary Shelley's cautionary horror tale, Frankenstein: A Modern Prometheus, portrays the deadly consequences of callous indifference to life. Throughout the novel, Shelley employs allusions to the Prometheus myth, Paradise Lost, and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." Through these allusions, Shelley illustrates the creature's yearning for love and acceptance, and Victors lack of love and compassion which leads to his ultimate destruction. In the first place, Shelley alludes to Greek mythology, the Prometheus myth, to demonstrate Victor's creation of life and feelings for his creature. Shelley writes, "Who shall conceive the horrors of my secret toil as I dabbled among the unhallowed damps of the grave or tortured the living animal to animate the lifeless clay?" (Shelley, 45). Victor gathered parts of human anatomy taken from graves for his creation, but Shelley reminds us of Prometheus by pointing out the words "lifeless clay." Hence, Prometheus created humans out of clay, shaping them into small figures. Once again, Shelley resorts to an allusion to the myth by saying, "I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet" (Shelley, 48), referring to how Victor infused life into his creation through galvanism. Paradise Lost Throughout time, John Milton's Paradise Lost has been studied by many people and comprehended in many different fashions, developing all kinds of new interpretations of the great epic. There have been many different interpretations of this great epic. Milton's purpose in writing the epic was to explain the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Although the epic is similar to the Bible story in many ways, Milton's character structure differs from that of the Bible's version. All through out the epic Milton describes the characters in the way he believes they are. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "In the forefront of the battle, where we expect him, is Milton's Satan, the great rebel of Paradise Lost" (Hamilton 7). Hamilton also introduces the idea of an underdog, describing Satan as a person fighting against an inferior power, with extreme odds against a victory for his side (14). In the scenes around the battle in heaven, Milton shows how Satan is viewed as a leader by the other fallen angels. <br> <br>There are other speeches of war in the epic that arouse the reader. One of the most significant is after Satan has made a meeting in the new Capitol of Hell, Pandemonium. "To have built Heaven high towers; Nor did he scape By all his engines but was headlong sent With industrious crew to build in Hell" (Milton 55). Following the rapid building, all the fallen angels gather for their meeting asking shall it be war or peace. "Their rising all at one was as the sound Of thunder heard remote. Towards him they bend With awful reverence prone, and as a god" (Milton 79). When his followers cheer Satan on, the reader notices how much he likes the attention. This is another sign of how Milton shows the significant role that Satan's pride plays in his decisions. In many different encounters Satan lets his pride interfere with his actions. In doing this, Satan begins to worry only about himself and the opinions his followers hold of him. Satan continues with the speech saying, "Should we again provoke Our Stronger, some worse way his wrath may find ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Idi Amin Research Paper Idi Amin ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 during that time a lust for power, crippling paranoia, and constant threats to his authority turned Amin into an authoritarian leader who ultimately took the lives of over 300,000 Ugandans. Amin's quest for power, egoism, and corruption was instrumental in Amin's creation of the Ugandan state during his rule. Amin used common "state building" techniques such as the social identity theory (SIT) and in/out group hypothesis. Amin used his Ugandan identity and his poor upbringings to connect with the people of Uganda. This duality of his personality hid the unhinged leader that he was from his people which helped him create such a strong state. Furthermore, Amin often lied about the atrocities being committed in Uganda helping people live in a state of blissful ignorance. This quote could relate no more so than in the novel The Last King Of Scotland with the protagonist Nicholas Garrigan who continually takes no action against the atrocities he hears and witness whilst he is Idi Amin's personal physician. We can view Garrigan in two different perspectives one being that he is a good person who did nothing or the other being he is a good person that did bad things. Through an exploration of political, social and economic development around the globe, scholars are trying to understand which policies are most beneficial, and why certain policies are effective and why some fail. The connection between different types of development is often an important part of this research as well. Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development. To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP and increased the political power of Milton Obote. • 37. Essay on Ancient Rome and Cleopatra Cleopatra Read the following passage carefully at least twice. What does it tell us about Plutarch's view of the relationship between Antony and Cleopatra? For Plutarch peoples actions, however trite, were great indications of a person's moral character (Plutarch, 1914, p. 225). We can, therefore, assume that Plutarch would have placed great importance on the everyday activities of Cleopatra and Antony in reflecting the character of their relationship. Plutarch wrote 150 years after the events of Cleopatra and Antony and was therefore heavily influenced by Roman views of, not only, the couple themselves but also by Roman's understanding and expectations of relationships, gender and race. Plutarch highlights the inseparability of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So in Plutarch's eyes, Antony has failed to live up to his male role within the relationship. Roman's believed that "A man's whole being is moulded by the habits of his daily life" (Moohan, 2008. p. 27). To Plutarch, Antony's activities such as fishing indicates Antony's failure to live up to his honorable rank as a Roman general. He is clearly inferior to the man he once was when he hunted "cities, realms, and continents" (Plutarch, in AA100 Assignment Booklet, 2011, p.17). At times, Plutarch shows more concern with Antony's behaviour than Cleopatra's. Antony's actions are described as "mad follies" and, although Cleopatra participates, it is Antony's actions that lack reason, not hers (Plutarch, in AA100 Assignment Booklet, 2011, p.17). Romans viewed Egyptian way of life as inferior and "barbaric" compared to the civility of Roman culture as was reiterated by many Roman historians such as Cassius Dio (Moohan, 2008. p. 27). Therefore, Plutarch is more concerned with Antony's actions as he expects more from a Roman man. As a woman and an Egyptian, Plutarch does not have such high expectations of Cleopatra hence why he is less focussed on her. This passage underlines the relationship's negative influence on Antony and highlights the power dynamics of the relationship. Cleopatra is in control and outwits Antony, whereas he is powerless and idiotic. Plutarch makes sense of Antony's behaviour with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The audience is introduced to a new land that evokes misery from every angle. Yet, in order to comprehend why the narrator fosters such a specific, horrid description of Hell, it is imperative to understand who the narrator truly is. The epic poem is told through a third person omniscient perspective.
