While walking down the street one day, Edison noticed through a window that a brokerage firm
manager was in panic from what looked like a "critical stock ticker had broken down" (Israel 175).
Pushing his way through the crowd to the manager, Thomas took seconds to fix the unfamiliar
machine. His actions astonished the manager, who immediately gave Edison a high paying job in the
firm to do future maintenance on all machines. This incident became a major event in Edison's life

Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11, 1847. He was the youngest of seven
children. His mother was Nancy Matthews Elliott and his father was Samuel Edison Jr. Edison has
gone to school for a very short time, only twelve weeks. He was hyperactive when he was a child
and his teachers had problems teaching him. So, instead of going to school, his mother taught him,

In 1868, Alva went to Western Union Company, in Boston, to look for a job in science. He invented
an electric voting record to count the votes quickly. This was his first ever patent for an invention.
But, lawmakers were not interested. In 1869, Thomas went to New York and invented the Universal
Stock Printer. It synchronized transitions by the tickers.The Gold and Stock Telegraph Company
paid him $40,000 for it. He wanted to spend his time in inventing, so he quit his telegrapher job. In
the 1870's, he built a manufacturing company and a small laboratory in Newark, New Jersey. He

The next year, he created a small laboratory in Newark, New Jersey. Edison created a quadruplex
telegraph that could send two signals in two different direction on the same wire. It was sold for
$100,000. When Thomas was 24 years old he married 16 year old Mary Stilwell, who was an
employee at one of his businesses. Throughout his marriage they had three children, Marion,

Have you ever been to a really scary horror movie, you know the kind that has you jumping out of
your skin at any strange sound? Once you get home don't you race up to your bedroom and turn on
all the lights there and in the bathroom then you let out a sigh of relief. At this point you can take a
shower and get ready for bed. When you're ready to go to sleep you turn off your lights and reach up
to turn on your rather cool Star Wars night light that dimly lights up your room and one in your
