A social group is a collection of people who interact and share characteristics. Social groups form through work, friends, clubs, family, and relationships. The characters and audience of the opening sequence will belong to particular social groups, meaning the sequence will appeal more to some groups than others.
The document discusses how the characters Ella and 'The Prince' could belong to different social groups based on inferences from the opening sequence - Ella to a group of abuse victims, and 'The Prince' to a group of wealthy elites due to his power and control over Ella.
It also suggests the target audience could be females interested in psychology to understand the opening sequence, which depicts Ella as a strong hero who escapes her captor
2. A social group is a collection of people who
interact with each other and share similar
characteristics and a sense of unity
Social groups can be established through work
and occupation, friends, social/sport clubs,
family and relationships
Both the characters in my opening sequence
and my audience will fit into a particular social
group thus meaning that the opening sequence
itself will appeal to one group of people more
than others
3. Grouped by sporting interests
Grouped by age
Grouped by friendship
Grouped by social media
4. Ella can be in the social group of abuse
victims because it can be inferred in the
opening sequence that, that is what has
happened to her whether it be physical,
emotional, mental or verbal abuse
‘The Prince’ can be in the social group of the
financial elite, because it can be inferred that
he is rich and powerful which causes him to
have control over Ella and others around him
5. Due to the nature of the opening sequence
the target audience could be females that
know about psychology and how the mind
works in order to understand what the
opening sequence is about.
6. Ella (the protagonist/victim)- usually when women are the protagonist
or victim in thriller films they are viewed as weak and scared. For
example Kim in Taken or Slim Hiller in Enough. However we decided
to flip the idea of her being a victim on it’s head and decided to make
her a hero in her own right. Not many victims escape from the captors
so that is what we decided to do. Ella is represented as a strong
character who only seems to break down and show her vulnerability
when she is alone.
‘The Prince’ (the antagonist/villain) – in psychological thrillers which is
what the opening sequence could be referred to as, (although it is
more of a romance thriller,) the antagonist character tries to unlock the
victim’s emotions and mentality by either mentally abusing or
neglecting them. For example Kiefer Sutherland (phone booth) and
Christian Bale (American Psycho.) The Prince is represented as being
manipulative and unnaturally calm and collected
