3. Codes and convention
• They all have either one main artist or one group on the font cover.
• They are all in front of the masthead, and the masthead is always at the top.
• Usually the artists tend to be wearing skimpy clothing, so either a really tight or
short dress or sometimes even a bikini. If it’s a guy they tend to either be topless
or are dressed smart but in a more casual way.
• They never seem to have any smaller images, and a lot of them don’t have many
sub-lines
• The main colours seem to be: red, black, white and yellow
4. Audience
It was originally created by African-Americans in the 1940’s for the
migrators into Chicago, Detroit, LA and New york.
However a new variation of R&b called contempary r&B came around in
the 1980’s after the fall of Disco. It combines R&B, contempary, hip hop
and other urban genres.
Contempary R&B is popularised by Michael Jackson, Whitney
Houston, Stevie Wonder etc, so there is a wide audience. Traditional R&B
was made popular by Elvis and Jimmy Witherspoon.
