• Hip hop as music and culture formed during the 1970s when block
parties became increasingly popular in New York City, particularly among
African American youth residing in the Bronx.
• Rapping, is a vocal style in which the artist speaks lyrically, in rhyme and
verse, generally to an instrumental which include synthesizers, drum
machines, and sometimes live bands. Beats, almost always in 4/4 time
signature, can be created by sampling and/or sequencing portions of
other songs by a producer.
• The roots of rapping are found in African-American music and
ultimately African music, particularly that of the of the West African
culture. The African-American traditions of jazz poetry and others all
influence hip hop music, as well as the call and response patterns of
African and African-American religious ceremonies. Soul singer James
Brown, and musical 'comedy' acts such as Rudy Ray Moore and Blowfly are
often considered "godfathers" of hip hop music.

SUB GENRES
• Hip hop is one of the most publically sustainable typical
music genre in Japan, and the line between it and pop
music is frequently blurred. Hip hop has globalized into
many cultures worldwide, as evident through the
emergence of numerous regional scenes.
• Hip hop was almost entirely unknown outside of the
United States prior to the early 1980s. During that
decade, it began its spread throughout all seven seas
and became a part of the music scene in loads of
countries. In the early part of the decade, break
dancing became the first aspect of hip hop culture to
reach Germany, Japan, Australia and South Africa.
PUBLIC PERCEPTION
RECORD LABELS The main record labels of the 21st Century that you may recognise are:
Atlantic Records: Owned by Warner Music Group and founded in 1947.
Best known for rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and jazz. Over its first
20 years, Atlantic earned a reputation as one of the most important
American independent recording labels, specializing in jazz, R&B and
soul recordings by African-American artists, a position greatly enhanced
by its distribution deal with Stax Records.
Maybach Music Group (MMG): Founded by Rick Ross in 2009. Owned
by Warner Bros. Records until Atlantic Records took over in 2011.
G.O.O.D. Music: An American record label founded by rapper and
producer Kanye West in 2004. "G.O.O.D." is a acronym for "Getting Out
Our Dreams". The label is home to recording artists such as Kanye
himself, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Pusha T, Mos Def, Q-Tip, D'banj and John
Legend among others.
Young Money Entertainment: Owned by Universal Music Group and
founded by Lil’ Wayne in 2005. Young Money's president is Lil Wayne's
lifelong friend Mack Maine. The label is an imprint of Cash Money
Records and is distributed in the US by Republic Records and Universal
Island Records.
Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA): An American hip hop
collective from Los Angeles, California. The collective is led by
rapper/producer Tyler, The Creator, and includes rappers Hodgy Beats,
Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, and Mike G, singer-songwriter/rapper
Frank Ocean, and many others. Tyler has said that there are 60
members in the group
COMPETITION (OTHER MAGAZINES)
XXL
VIBe
THE SOURCE
Rolling Stone
XXL, VIBe and The Source are the main competition as they have
latest news and gossip about Hip-Hop/Rap artists, where as Rolling
Stone isn’t so much as their magazine is broader as they have
articles about more icons than just those Hip-Hop/Rap icons.
Rolling Stone magazine prices aren’t fixed but costs around £3.95
and sell their magazines every month; VIBe costs about £3.99
selling their issues once every 1-2 months; XXL magazines costs
depend on the front cover model, the one you see to the left costs
£2.99. XXL magazine issues are sold every month.
CROSS MEDIA
The MTV channels are all a form of which the Hip-Hop genre is
distributed to the general public. The main MTV channel is MTV
BASE (see left) which is mostly full of Rap and Hip-Hop tunes
Another way Hip-Hop is distributed to the public is through radio,
mainly through ChoiceFM which plays non-stop Hip-Hop, RnB and
Rap tunes 24/7
Finally, we come to the way in which we find out about Hip-
Hop and Rap music and how we come to have it in our
pockets. Of course I am talking about social networks like
Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
PREDICTIONS
Hip Pop could change the world and reach a
bigger target audience but at this moment in
time it seems that hip pop is tagged to a black
public
“ “
Hip Pop right now is still being perceived as a
bad genre therefore in order for Hip Hop to
settle, society must witness Hip Hop first which
is something hard to accomplish as society is
stubborn
“ “
Hip Hop will continue to stay with the younger
generation and the older people will forever
neglect Hip Hop from their lives if they were
not already brought up with it
““
I think that for me personally, Hip Hop will
never grow old as new stories are told and
new artists are discovered… Hip Hop is a
forever evolving genre for me
