Essay On Mother Daughter Talk
Mother Daughter Talk (July 7, 2017) Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church.
Outline:
I will start by introducing myself. Explain what my Catholic faith means to me and how it has
helped me in my life, especially in my relationship with my own daughter.
(I am married with three kids, two boys and one girl. They are all college students right now. I
converted to the Catholic Church 23 years ago. I have been an ESL teacher for more than 20 years. I
was a RCIA and confirmation teacher for a few years at Christ the Savior and Most Holy Trinity
etc.)
The main theme of my talk will be: From Fear to Faith
As a parent, a teacher, and a catechist, I often find myself talking with teenagers about their
problems. Some of my students' problems are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, we are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is
being renewed day by day. For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight
of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is
seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16–18)
Two Sundays ago we read the Gospel of Matthew during mass:
Jesus said to the Twelve: "Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret
that will not be. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered,
proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;
rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna" (Matt 10:26–28).
Father Joe, explained to us about how sometimes our lives are driven by fear, parents are afraid of
their kids, we are afraid of not conforming to our society.
As we reflect on our own fears. What do I fear as teenager, as a mom, as a teacher..? How can we be
find the courage and understanding to deal with our personal situations? Without knowing we have
all faced and overcame many adversities and when we looked back and reflect upon it we ask
ourselves. How did I do it? How did I find the courage?
So we are always courageous, although we know that while we are at home in the body we are away
from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.

Susan Wolf 's Article ' Moral Saints ' And John Stuart...
Both Susan Wolf's article "Moral Saints" and John Stuart Mill's book "Utilitarianism" will be
discussed here. These works offer expositions of and opinions on the philosophical issue of the
moral worth of adhering to a certain set of values, and how a person's motivations for doing so can
change their worth and the desirability of their way of life. Wolf offers the position that leading an
extremely morally good life is undesirable, while Mill's opposing position is that if morality leads to
happiness, then that behavior is preferable. To determine which of these stances on the value of
morality has the most pertinence, these two arguments will be outlined and consequently analyzed.
Their differences and similarities will be enumerated and described, and consequently their merit
will be discussed. Finally, Wolf's moral theory will be proven to be inferior to Mills's, due to its
prejudice, lack of supportive evidence, and its inability to be universally applicable.
In "Moral Saints", Susan Wolf defines a moral saint as an individual who is as morally good as it is
possible to be. Wolf suggests that there are two types of moral saints, utilitarian and Kantian (Wolf
420). A utilitarian saint is a "Loving Saint", one who simply finds their own happiness in the
happiness of others and performs moral actions for their own sake (Wolf 420). A Kantian saint is a
"Rational Saint", who is inherently different from a utilitarian/loving saint in the sense that they do

The Role Of Sacred Music On My Worship Experience
the role of sacred music in my worship experience is that it touches the inner most parts of my
emotions, it stirs my heart and makes me want to sing. I enjoy all kinds of music in worship, upbeat
songs to lift you, songs that have special meaning for the time I am going through, praise songs that
lift up Jesus and music that unites us as a people. I enjoy music that makes laugh and even music
that makes me cry. For me all music is praise as the Bible says, "By him therefore let us offer the
sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name." (KJV)
When we sing, we praise, we speak to the heart of God. Some of my favorite songs are "The Old
Rugged Cross", because it was my Mom's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If there was music that was hard for you to hear I would say it is because either you feel convicted
or it brings forth bad memories. I know right after my Mom died it was hard for me to hear, "The
Old Rugged Cross". But now it makes me think of her and it makes me happy.
For me there are many aspects of worship that move me into His divine presence. Most of the time
it is through music and worship. I try to come to church ready to worship and think it helps when we
come expecting to receive something from God. Music moves me into an emotional state. I can
worship God when the offering is being taken. When I preach I feel the anointing of the Lord and
feel very close to Him at that time. During Holy Communion I feel united with Christ, the world,
the Church and my local fellowship. I think part of our fellowship with Christ depends on mind set
when we enter in. Do we come to church with worship in mind? Do we truly come to Church to
worship Jesus? I know when I give the opening prayer I normally say something to affect, "Let's
forget about what we have to do after church and this next week and let's invite the presence of the
Lord." It is so easy to get distracted and miss what is that God has for us that particular service. It is
easy not to hear from God and not be blessed. How blessings do we miss simply because we were
not paying attention? God can and does speak through all aspects of the service.
I was a member of different denomination and

The Cruel Hand of God:
Secular Themes and Compassionate Leadership in San Manuel Bueno, MĂĄrtir and The Plague
Miguel de Unamuno's short story San Manuel Bueno, MĂĄrtir and Albert Camus's tour de force The
Plague describe towns whose leaders employ drastically different methods to combat their
communal maladies. The Plauge's Dr. Bernard Rieux relies on an unrelentingly harsh process of
physical healing, driven not by his empathy for the individual but by his compassion for humanity.
Unamuno's priest Don Manuel shrouds his village in the warm embrace of religious serenity,
complicated by only one fact: the priest does not believe in God. Despite these divergent
philosophies, both characters aspire to their own notions of what constitutes "secular sainthood."
Because of the inherent imprecision of such a phrase, the reader is asked to determine what truly
determines a "secular saint." Is it someone who is portrayed by the populace as a religious martyr
but who actually is quite secular (hereafter known as the "Don Manuel interpretation") or someone
who is seen by the populace as cruelly detached and unemotional but is actually a hero (Rieux's
guiding philosophy)? Alternatively, one could be drawn to the possibility, as I am, that neither truly
constitutes secular sainthood.
In attempting to determine the success of both Rieux and Don Manuel in the quest for beatification,
one may explore a dichotomy familiar in the theological cannon: whether God ought to be kind, as

The Catholic Church And The Church
The Catholic Church has always been one to hand out praise fairly freely. There is a patron saint for
everything, from plague to beekeeping to flowers. There are patron saints for specific cities, patron
saints for specific trades, and patron saints for almost any object that comes to mind. However, in
the past, the process of becoming a saint, known as canonization, was at the least thoroughly
investigative. The Catholic Church has strict beliefs to be upheld and represented. For example,
charity work has always been an enormous part of the Church and its mission. The entirety of the
Catholic Church, including any and all charities affiliated with the Church, donates approximately
$30 billion to charity annually in the U.S. alone (Jacobson). Any person who is on the track to
canonization must be one who upholds those values, that same generosity that is so ingrained in the
Church. In September of 2016, Mother Teresa is going to be beatified by Pope Francis. While
beatification, or the act of confirming that a person has been in heaven since their death, is not the
final step in canonization, it is the biggest and most important part of the process. However, Mother
Teresa's charity work was not as advantageous as the Catholic Church has let on thus far. Although
she is credited with providing food and healthcare to the poor, the terrible quality of her treatment,
her lack of qualification, and her fraudulent behaviors are too often overlooked; therefore, Mother
Teresa should

Historical Art Work: Reliquary Châsse
While there many gorgeous and historical art works present at National Gallery of Art, I shall only
compare and contrast the functions, materials and the context of a pair art works. The first art work
is called Reliquary Châsse, which was made in Limoges; a city of French that well–known for
copper work. The birth years of the art was written in between 1175 to 1180 CE. The art work is
now a donation from Widerner Collection since 1942 to National Gallery of Art. On other hand, the
second art work is called Book Cover with Christ in Majesty, which was also made in French in
1210 CE. It is now a donation from Samuel H. Kress Collection since 1961 to National Gallery of
Art. Moving into the first point of view, reliquary is a term uses to call containers of relics.
Therefore, the Reliquary Châsse might have been used to contain a relic and present in a church.
The material of the box is champlevĂŠ enamel on gilded copper with oak core. Despite the cheap
material compare to Romansque goldsmith works, the reliquary still gives a golden shine color of
luxury. People can also easily find the joint between layers of gilded copper with oak core

Saint Appolinare Analysis
Saint Appolinare is the largest figure within the piece and is standing directly over the alter and
below the massive cross. The gold jewel encrusted cross is contained within a bright blue circle
dotted with gold stars. The green background is filled with plants, shrubs and trees all of which are
coloured in varying shades of green.
The green background is used to highlight and contrast the white sheep and Saint Apollinare. Most
of the sheep and the saint occupy a the same ground level and plane. Unlike the mosaic of Christ the
good Shepard the the mosaic of Appolinare is flat and without depth or shading. The piece does
exhibit the use of limited overlapping as observed in the legs of the sheep. This overlapping is
similar to the observed technique used on ancient Babylonian art. One could postulate that this is a
de–evolving of style and a refinement of the message from the church.
i think the most intriguing element of the piece is the mysterious imagery above the cross. ... Show

more defensive strategy of keeping people within their influence. The change in message from
acceptance to that of fear, was a calculated decision, based upon a need to stay relevant and in

The pantokrator is also a dichotic message perpetrated by the church. I believe, the illiteracy of the
congregation was purposeful as it limited access to the original message within the bible. Limiting
access afforded the leaders of the church greater mobility in steering the congregation towards their
desired goals. Christ the Pantokrator is direct evidence of the liberties taken by the establishment in

Is Iconoclasm Acceptable
Is Iconoclasm acceptable? Today we have encountered numerous situations of iconoclasm.
Iconoclasm means "icon–breaking," which includes the religious as well as the political destruction
of images or monuments usually, not always, by those of another group. There are many examples
in the past and even recently that prove that iconoclasm still exists today. Thus, iconoclasm is the
destruction of icons and sometimes it is believed that it is done because of the difference between
religious beliefs. In fact, the word "icon" refers to many different things today. For example, we use
this word to refer to the small graphic symbols in our software and powerful cultural figures.
Nevertheless, these different meanings retain a connection to its ... Show more content on

police say he smashed a vase at the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) that was worth around one

Eventually, it was stated that he tried to copy the famous photos behind of an artist by the name of
Ai Weiwei dropping a vase so this had nothing to do with his religious beliefs. There could be a
possibility that this man believed that they were not going to punish him for dropping a vase. Based
on damaged art pieces from the past proves that iconoclasts existed and also exist today since there
has been plenty of cases about people who have the urge to destroy meaningful art. Whether or not
this was done by someone with different beliefs, or just a person who was up to no good, it is still
disrespectful. Thus, there has been sufficient art pieces that prove that iconoclasm existed, continues
to exist today and that many time religion has nothing to do with

Confirmation Research Paper
There are many things to consider when preparing for Confirmation. Getting confirmed is not an
easy thing to do, and it should definitely not be something that you do without equipping yourself
beforehand. When you are a child, your parents make the decision of entering you into the church.
They also may have forced you to go to mass every Sunday to receive the gift of the Eucharist. After
you have been Confirmed, it is no longer up to your parents to make those decisions for you. It is
also, vital for you to surround yourself with good role models that want the best for you. You must
have someone, other than your parents, to rely on when times get tough. You should also have a
good patron saint to model your life after. Additionally, you should be reading scripture, to remind
yourself of the word of God. These may seem like small things to think about before you get
Confirmed. However, these actions play a crucial role in keeping your relationship with God
healthy. Baptism is the first sacrament that you receive. It washes away the original sin or any

Everytime we take Eucharist we witness transubstantiation, or the bread turning into body and the
wine turning into the blood of Christ. This is important to me because, everytime I take the body
and blood, I am reminded of the sacrifices Jesus' made for us. I also am reunited with God and
Jesus. Equally as important as receiving the Eucharist is going to Mass every Sunday. Attending
Church is not only one of the ten Commandments, but it is a sacred time of the week. It is time that
you should thank God for all that he has given you, and reflect on parts of your week that you could
have improved on. I take Church very seriously because I understand God dedicates 24 hours a
week to me, so the least I can do is thank him for his

C.) In Him we find our Banner David calls the Lord a "shield," or a buckler. There are times when
trouble comes trouble comes and we desire the Lord to come to our rescue and act as a shield to
stand between danger. I remember one day when it was raining badly and my daughters and I were
driving. Suddenly I hit a water patch and the car spun out of control on the busy Highway. Once the
car stopped spinning, it landed in the lane going the other direction of traffic. Fortunately, neither of
us was harmed or injured. This is an example of buckler or shield. God shielded my daughters and I
from all harm and danger that day. David refers to the Lord as a "horn of salvation." The horn is the
symbol of strength and conquest. David believes that the Lord is his strength and salvation. He also
believes that the Lord is a "stronghold," which is translated as "High Tower." This refers to the great
towers that were built around the ancient cities that were stocked with ammunition and supplies.

Saint Anne, The Mother Of Mary And The Mother Of Jesus
Saint Anne is easily identified as the Mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. Saint Anne was
Palestinian, but born in Bethlehem (Asselin; The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica). Sacred
scripture does not "mention... Mary's parents", but "there is not a total lack of information about"
them. Some sources believe that Saint Anne could not have children (Asselin; Holweck; "Saint
Anne"; The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica) . Because of this, she and her husband, Saint
Joachim, made many sacrifices and prayed to God for the gift of a child ("Saint Anne"). "The
Protoevangelium of James" states that "an angel appeared to..." them, saying that Saint Anne would
"conceive and bear a child who would become famous throughout the world" regardless of her old
age (Asselin; Holweck; "Saint Anne."; The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica). St. Joachim and
St. Anne are Jesus's grandparents and belong, in a sense, to the "Holy Family" (Asselin). They are
often referred to as a holy model by Christian couples (Asselin). "After Jesus and Mary, St. Anne is
one of the subjects that appears most frequently in iconography" (Asselin). Saint Anne's feast day is
celebrated on "July 26th" (Asselin; Holweck; "Saint Anne."; The Editors of Encyclopaedia
Britannica).
While there are no eye–witness descriptions of Saint Anne's active engagement in her faith, her
devotion to God is displayed through her actions and role as a mother. Saint Anne is the patron saint

Taking a Look at Different Spiritual Disciplines
Spiritual Disciplines
In my given faith exposure to the Spiritual Disciplines was rather limited; there was fasting that we
did during Lent, and prayer that was for a lack of a better term, scripted. Intercessory prayers were
made mostly to the venerated saints instead of directly to Jesus Christ. In fact, two of the most
common intercessory prayers I said to the saints were to St. Jude, the Patron Saint of Hopelessness
and St. Michael, the Archangel, who is the Patron Saint and protector of those in public safety. For
many years it was understood that if you needed something in prayer, you prayed to the appropriate
saint in ritualistic prayer. As I mentioned fasting was associated with Lent and during the Lenten
season your fast was to give up something you were attached to and of course meat on Fridays.
Once Lent was over so was your fasting. Even worship is termed differently and is more commonly
known as duty or Liturgy ("Liturgy definition," n.d., para. 1). Unfortunately, this sense of duty
removes the sense of worship that involves our whole being (Foster, 1998, p. 169). When worship is
turned into duty instead of something you freely want to do, it is no wonder that people turn away
from corporate worship.
Certainly, I knew of these disciplines but their purpose was never really understood and truly, I
never knew they were disciplines. To my relief it was discovered that my generation and many
others were left in ignorance of the most simple and practical

Essay On Yoruba Religion
Due to pressure to hide their Yoruba religious beliefs, Practitioners of SanterÎŻa resorted to
concealing or fusing their faith with that of the Roman Catholic Church. Already in place in that
Church was the concept of the immortality of the soul, which led to prayers and offerings made to
the dead. The churches were full of carved and painted images of departed people who had been
declared saints, but who could, if handled rightly, grant requests.
Masking the Yoruba deities with the Catholic saints was a means of keeping the old religion alive,
even if it meant giving new names to the orishas. Catholicism was the seedbed for the survival of
the orishas.
The Catholic Church allowed ethnic associations – Cabildos – to form and develop, wherein African

Even Jesus was brought into the Old World religion, given new definitions, roles, and personhood,

hostile environment and succeeded in preserving their gods and forms of worship. In this way they
were able to resist being completely subsumed by the European majority.
To survive then, the Yoruba slaves created a seeming alliance with the dominant religion. The
Spanish Catholic Church did not demand doctrinal adherence to nor an understanding of those
doctrines. Usually the "converts" became so under duress, often hundreds were merely sprinkled
with holy water – sometimes while still wearing their chains.7 African slaves were dispersed

America, most notably Brazil (which has a high concentration of those who belong to the orisha

When something extraordinary is done by God in the Old Testament, he often changes the person's
name as a sign. So, in Catholic tradition, there are many life–changing situations when a person
takes on a new name in addition or in place of the old one. Confirmation is one of these life–
changing events, and, as per tradition, one who finishes confirmation chooses a patron saint to fill
this name. I, Darwin Diaz, have chosen the patron saint of animals and ecology, Saint Francis of
Assisi. In this essay will act as a report on Saint Francis of Assisi's life and will illustrate why i fell
Saint Francis of Assisi is the right patron saint for me.
Francis of Assisi was one of seven children born in late 1181 or early 1182 to Pietro di Bernardone

Assisi, his mother had him baptized as Giovanni. By age 14, he had left school and become known
as a rebellious teenager who frequently drank, partied and broke the city curfew while also being
known for his charm and self–admiration. In 1201, he joined a military expedition against Perugia

me because I have always considered a career in ecology. If I do choose a career in ecology in the

The Holy Family With Saints Anne And John The Baptist
The painting The Holy Family with Saints Anne and John the Baptist, 1592 (oil on canvas) was
created by Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola (c.1532–1625). It is currently held at the Collection
of the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami, as a gift from Mrs. Forbes Hawkes and Bridgeman
Images. This painting is among the unique pious narrative paintings by Anguissola. "The Holy
Family" is the last dated painting by the artist. It was executed when she had just returned to Italy
after spending 14 years working for King Philip II at the Spanish court. By this time, she had
already married to a Genoese ship captain. Her various visits to court and her personal contacts with
great painter at that time largely inspired herself. Through these contacts, she successfully stayed in
touch with current developments in art. By closely observing this masterpiece, I argue that the artist
perfectly sustain the beauty of counter–reformation arts in her work by use of light and shadow,
delicate brushwork and accurate proportions of each subjects.
Anguissola is mostly interested in portraits painting, thus this is a unique one as an exception. As
one of the well–known Counter reformist works, this masterpiece depicted the interest of religion
worship in order to appeal to the viewers in an expressive fashion. "The Holy Family" was done
during Catholic Counter–Reformation era. The Protestants mostly removed public art from religion
and preferred that society moved towards secular styles. The

Personal Statement : My Theological Obligations Essay
Personal Self–Assessment My theological commitments have been refined as a result of this course
in many areas. Through reading The Basic by Alister E. McGrath, participating in the forum posts,
and taking quizzes, allows me to learned about different theological terms, concepts, and many
famous theologians. My knowledge on what I've learned from my reading was challenged by the
Engaging–a–Text assignments, located at the end of each chapter. It required me to explain
theological terms, concepts and view of each theologian in my own words. Another reading required
for this course is called the Patron Saints for Postmoderns by Chris R. Armstrong, where I've
learned about many Saints and contribution to the churches. The Patron Saints Forum allows me to
relate theological understandings to the actions of real people. The recent assignment, research

The Color Blue Essay
and green. Blue as discussed earlier was represented as the color of the God and other religious
concepts, so the major incorporation of the color blue in the reliquary chasse indicated the spiritual
significance it carried. Envisioning blue on the chasse unified people to Jesus Christ. Many of the
reliquary chasse of the 12th century narrated a story; this individual one narrates the crucifixion of
Christ. There are several key figures engraved throughout the exterior of the chasse, however since
the crucial scene of the execution are shown on the front face of the chasse, that indicates that this
chasse was primarily to be seen from the front rather than the sides. If viewed from the front, the top
has three figures designed on it. In the center is the God the Father and on his either sides are two
unknown saints. All three figures are represented in mandorlas however in different colors. The God
of Father is displayed in the blue mandorla while the saints are shown in green mandorla. Here we
can interpret a sense of hierarchy because the God of Father is shown in blue, which represents a
divine color, however the saints are represented in green that is a mix of blue and yellow. So, blue
still exists and represents divinity, yet the mixture of blue and yellow to produce a different shade of
blue signifies that the God of Father is above and more important than the saints. The background is
enameled with a deeper shade of blue, probably indicating the larger divinity of

St Lucy Research Paper
Saints, by definition, are "any persons of exceptional holiness of life, formally recognized by the
Catholic Church." As Catholics, we practice praying to saints to ask for guidance in all types of
situations. To become a saint, a person must live a holy life, have proof of miracles, and must be
beatified before the official canonization. The saint I chose, Saint Lucia, led a very holy life, and
gave her life rather than deny her faith. Saint Lucia (also known as Saint Lucy) was a virgin and
martyr from Syracuse, Sicily, in Italy. She was born in the year 283 A.D. Lucia was born into a

means light. She is the patron saint of the blind, and all eye patients. In paintings and sculptures, she
is almost always portrayed carrying her eyes on a plate. She is very commonly pictured with a palm
branch, which is a symbol for triumph over evil. She is venerated on December 13th. When I was in
third grade, I received my Confirmation with the Confirmation name of Saint Maria. In the
Greensburg Diocese, Confirmation names were the child's middle name, so I did not have a choice

Catholic Myticism And Catholic Mysticism
Catholic mysticism is described as a belief that you can achieve union with God by surrendering
yourself completely, and devoting yourself to prayer and contemplation. In this way mystics choose
to do these spiritual exercises because they believe it will create a true union between them and God
and thus understand what God wants from us, and how to best serve him. Mystics can be found in
several religions throughout the world and is surprisingly a tremendous part of the Catholic religion.
Catholicism is a branch of Christianity that is traced back to Jesus Christ, who along with the Holy
Spirit and God, the Father, are the Holy Trinity in which the Catholic church's beliefs are set on.
Catholic mystics beliefs are centered with a deep desire to love God, all three parts, and partake in
actions that will serve him and create a deeper bond with him than usual. Throughout the Catholic
Church's history many mystics have risen to the forefront to create change within the church that
would revolutionize people's beliefs as a whole. To go into a discussion about how catholic mystics
revolutionized the catholic church I think that it is important to break down what it means to be a
mystic in the catholic religion. First and most importantly I would like to address the fact that there
are so many similarities between these catholic mystics. I think the discussion of spirituality versus
religion is an important one to have in order to truly understand Catholic mystics. It is what

The Church Is Holy Through Complete Devotion And Love For God
The church is holy through complete devotion and love for God. Because the church is holy, the
church has the duty to love and take care of all people. Holiness is a dedication to God. This
dedication is formed individually by the people of God, who are the church. However, not every
person of God is one hundred percent holy. Only Jesus Christ had complete dedication to God, but
the church strives for this dedication. Throughout time, there has been role models of holiness
within the church known as saints. Throughout the church's history, there has been many saints that
lived their life in complete devotion to God. For example, Joan of Arc was known as a "Fool for
God." As a teenager, she trusted the Lord and followed her call to lead a French army to victory. She
went against all odds but continued to put her faith in the Lord. Even when she was captured and
burned at the stake, the saint never lost her faith. James Martin writes in his book, My Life with the
Saints, "Joan was devoted to Jesus Christ, to prayer, to the sacraments, to the church, and to its
saints. She believed in God even when God asked her to accomplish the seemingly impossible,"

Our Moving Fate: A Study of El Greco's Assumption of the Virgin
El Greco painted his "Assumption of the Virgin" in 1577 for the convent of Santo Domingo el
Antiguo in Toledo, Spain. Born in Greece as Domenikos Theotocopoulos, (his nickname translates
from Spanish into "The Greek"), El Greco was the top artist of the Spanish School, and was
commissioned to paint "Assumption" to adorn the convent's altar. The painting is a daunting size–
over six feet wide and twice as tall–surrounded by a wooden frame tinted with a non–uniform
metallic gold paint. The oil on canvas creates some, although not obvious texture, and brush strokes
are visible only slightly in the garments of the human subjects. The Virgin Mary is the main figure

An in–depth study reveals mankind's literal presentation of Mary to God for appraisal and judgment,
rather than a simple depiction of her journey upward. The painting illustrates man's–not God's–
physical act of lifting Mary up, creating a truly dynamic canvas. To do all of this, El Greco uses
strong geometric divisions and hidden lines to take control of the viewer's eyes, and sly
manipulations of gravity and forces to create an image truly in motion. In the end, El Greco uses the
painting's overwhelming size and orientation to alter perspective and succeeds in tying the viewer's
fate into the scene itself.
The initial focus of the painting is Mary as a whole, or perhaps specifically her face and outstretched
arms. El Greco, however, uses a Cartesian grid to relocate the focus to the geometric center of the
canvas, a clearly intentional move necessary to create the basis of Mary's upward motion.
"Assumption" is strongly divided into four quadrants. The heavens, occupying the upper–half of the
canvas, are divided in half vertically by Mary's body, while the Earth is split by a clear part in the
crowd that extends directly downward from that same line. The divine and mortal realms are
separated fittingly by a line of clouds vertically centered on the canvas. The result is a crosshairs
locked in on the area just below the Virgin's feet–the area that will become the most important part
of the canvas. The

Saint Patrick: The First Saint
When one thinks of saints a holy individual that is in heaven comes to mind. Like the Saint Patrick
for example. People see saints not only as holy beings that were once alive but as the ones that they
can turn to in need of assistance. At least that is what the majority of the Catholic portion of
Christians believe. It is common knowledge that all Catholics are Christians seeing as it is a
denomination of Christianity, but not all Christians are Catholics. Therefore, there is a difference in
regards to what Christians know to be saints and what the Roman Catholic Church accept as saints.
So what does 'saints' really mean? In general, it is widely accepted that saints stand for holy, sacred,
and pious, a person consecrated to God. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is argued that the first saint ever canonized was Saint Ulalric by Pope John XV in 993. Others
believe that Saint Swebirt was the first, being canonized by Pope Leo III in 804. Many lean towards
the Saint Ulalric due to actual records kept of his canonization as opposed to Saint Swebirt which
there are no records for. The question on the exact number of saints in the Church is a whole other
problem. There are simply too many to properly count especially since the term 'Saint' was used by
early Christians to honor the martyrs during the Roman persecution of Christians from 30–100 A.D.
Angels are also hailed as saints one example being Saint Michael the Archangel who is arguably
among the most popular Saints throughout history. Just as there are different entities as saints, there
are different types of saints. Martyrs are the saints that died for Christianity, Confessors, despite the
name, are saints that died of natural causes and lastly Patrons who are considered defenders of a
specific group or country. Take a very well–known and revered being in the Mexican and Chicano
community; the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is the patron of the Mexican Country but this doesn't
mean she is the only one the public prays to. Catholics in Mexico pray to various other saints as well

The Culture Of The Italian Culture
The Description The cultural group I decided to gain more insight on through this experience was
the Italian culture. Explain history and describe! The immersion experiences in which I participated
were great opportunities to learn about the culture in more depth. The first experience I was able to
attend was on June 13, 2015. In downtown Indianapolis Indiana, I had the opportunity to attend the
Italian Culture Festival. Organized each year by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, this festival was
full of music, cultural food, and I was lucky enough to experience a traditional Italian religious
procession and Mass (Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). The festival was packed with people
from the city and from the Italian culture. I had never experienced a festival such as the one held in
Indianapolis. Being from the east coast and not of the Italian culture, the festival was a refreshing
yet, uncomfortable experience at times. I observed a traditional dance, the tarantella and those
around the area all seemed to know most of the steps or the words to some of the songs in the set
they played. The locals tried to get me to dance along but, I could not keep up with them on the fly.
The tarantella is one of the most famous of Italian dances and performers dance quickly to an upbeat
song (Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). It is said that the performers "sweat out" the poison of a
deadly tarantula and the dance could last for hours and could be religious in nature to some.

Catholic Church Experience
The Catholic Church has a role in my family situation for a number of reasons. Not only were we
originally married Catholic Church, but the church was also used successfully as a prop by my ex–
wife in the hearing. My ex–wife was not originally a Catholic, but converted to the faith during the
divorce process. Her conversion ironically, also coincided with her affair with Lt. Col. Robert Hicks.
In court the ex–wife openly professed her faith which was transparently insincere given the nature
of her affairs, perjury, fraud and other behavior. My ex–wife also sought and was granted an
annulment after 17 years of marriage and three children. She was clear in motives for requesting the
annulment in that she wished to have another wedding in the ... Show more content on

The ex–wife's willingness and even desire to lie under oath lends credibility to my argument that her
overtly demonstrated Christian faith is quite similar to that of the therapist Beth Anne Grant who
also professes her strong Christian faith. Their faith seems to be more closely affiliated with the Al
Qaeda wing of Christianity, rather than with any Christian faith I am familiar with.
The Catholic Schools also play a role in this family matter, specifically Sacred Heart in Warner
Robins Georgia. My daughter was initially enrolled in Sacred Heart School and I went to visit there
on a few occasions. On one occasion I was involved in a parent–teacher conference and I asked a
question about the ADHD testing that the school had administered. I was told directly by my
daughter's teacher, that Ms. Erwin the school's principal had told her that any details regarding this
testing were to be withheld from me. My daughter's teacher was told even deny that the testing had
even occurred. The only way I had knowledge and knew to ask questions of the testing was by
observing the school–administered results on a third–party psychologist's report. I did not wish to

What Is Worship And What It Is Not
What Worship Is And What It Is Not.
What is the true meaning of worshipping God? Is it intense emotional outpouring of an individual?
Is it smoke, lights, and loud music reminiscent of some sort of sanctified bar room? Does it require
music or sound at all? What exactly is required of an individual who wishes to glorify his Creator
and Redeemer? These are the questions that will be discussed in this paper. What is worship? It can
be defined as many things from solitude and prayer with God; It may involve music to some, in an
effort to draw one closer into the presence of the Almighty. The best definition of worship is this: it
is an end unto itself; it is not a means unto something else. When we try to worship for the sake of
certain benefits that may be received, the act ceases to be worship; for then it attempts to use God as
a means to something else. (Segler 5) It may be nigh unto impossible to pinpoint a single form of
worship that is applicable to everyone, but a single concept must be present for all believers. This is
the concept of surrender and obedience to God. It is the humbleness to something greater than
oneself. It the realization that man is nothing but sand on the seashore, while God is an endless sea.
Mankind is finite; he is only given a few years, while God is the Ancient of Days. Whether this
humble surrender is in the silence of solitude or in the presence of other believers, it is foolish to
speculate. Worship is to quicken the conscience to the

The Book Of Psalms
If the book of Psalms be, as some have styled it, a mirror or looking–glass of pious and devout
affections, this psalm in particular deserves, as much as any one psalm, to be so entitled, and is as
proper as any to kindle and excite such in us: gracious desires are here strong and fervent; gracious
hopes and fears, joys and sorrows, are here struggling, but the pleasing passion comes off a
conqueror. Or we may take it for a conflict between sense and faith, sense objecting and faith
answering. I. Faith begins with holy desires towards God and communion with him (v. 1, 2). II.
Sense complains of the darkness and cloudiness of the present condition, aggravated by the
remembrance of the former enjoyments (v. 3, 4). III. Faith silences the ... Show more content on

Sometimes God teaches us effectually to know the worth of mercies by the want of them, and whets

us sincere and earnest desires towards him, we may take comfort from these when we want those
ravishing delights we have sometimes had in God, because lamenting after God is as sure an
evidence that we love him as rejoicing in God. Before the psalmist records his doubts, and fears, and

Biography: Saint Philomena
St. Philomena was born on January 10th, 291 in Greece. St. Philomena's name in latin is
Filialuminis which means daughter of light. St. Philomena's parents were both royal from a small
state in Greece. St. Philomena did not have any siblings. When she was thirteen years old,
Philomena was forced in marriage with Emperor Diocletian. "My virginity, which I have vowed to
God, comes before everything, before you, before my country. My kingdom is Heaven." St.
Philomena rejected the emperor because she made a promise to herself that her virginity belonged to
God. Because St. Philomena would not accept his hand in marriage, he forced guards to unclothe

of the Living Rosary and Patroness of the Child of Mary. St. Philomena is also known as The
Anchor of Hope and remembered as a very holy person. Her tomb was discovered in the catacombs
of St. Priscilla in Rome on May 25, 1802. Beside her tomb were three tiles written with the words
LUMENA PAXTE CUMFI which means "Peace be with you Philomena" and drawings of two
anchors, three arrows, a palm, and a lily representing her martyrdom and virginity. Next to her tomb
was a vial containing her blood. Today, St. Philomena's sacred body is located in Mugnano del
Cardinale Avellino, Italy.
St. Philomena follows the commandments of our Lord Jesus. She loved God with all her heart
because she devoted her life and virginity to God. She loved Him so much that she was willing to
sacrifice herself for Him. St. Philomena put God above everyone, including her father and mother.
Although she did not listen to her parents by refusing to marry the emperor, she still loved them and
cared for them. She not only treated her parents with respect, but she still treated and loved her
neighbors as herself. In spite the fact that she was tortured, she did not fight back, harm, or express
any negativity towards anyone, especially the emperor.

The Early Life Of Saint Elizabeth Of The Visitation
"So Abraham received what God promised because he waited patiently for it." That's what Hebrews
6:15 says. Just like Abraham, Saint Elizabeth was patient and gained what she had longed for
through the grace of God. Imagine that you are Saint Elizabeth. You are disappointed that you were
never blessed with a child, but you never become bitter from it. You are always humble and put God
first. You and Zechariah pray every day for a child. Your prayers are never answered, but you still
remain faithful to God. Saint Elizabeth of the Visitation, who is still venerated in the Church today,
was the cousin of Mary, the mother of John the Baptist, and the first to acknowledge the importance
Mary's pregnancy.
Little is known about Saint Elizabeth's early life. She was born in the 1st century BC ("Saint
Elizabeth of the Visitation" 5). She was a descendant of Aaron, Moses' brother ("Elizabeth (Biblical
person)" 4). Her mother was named Sobe, and Mary's mother was Anne, which made Elizabeth and
Mary cousins ("Elizabeth (Biblical person)" 3). Elizabeth is also known as Elisabeth or Elisheva
(which was also Aaron's wife's name) ("Elizabeth (Biblical person)" 1). In Hebrew (‫ע‬‫ַב‬ ‫יֶׁש‬‫)ֱאִל‬,
Elizabeth's name means, "An oath to my God" ("Elizabeth (Biblical person") 1). She lived in the hill
country near Judea with her husband Zechariah ("Elizabeth (Biblical person)" 6). Elizabeth became
a saint because of her actions and through the help of many different people. Saint Elizabeth's last

A Saintlike Power In Saint Marie By Louise Erdrich
A Saintlike Power
There are different kinds of power. There is, of course, the power over another person. A power in
superiority, in dominance that makes people afraid. There's power in acceptance too. Any person
who has been welcomed by their peers has more power than one that has not. In my own life, I
struggle with power, and what kind of power I should want. My need for power likely stems from a
fundamental desire to fit in. Some days the power I crave is simply in acceptance. Acceptance from
peers, friends, or family. On other, less agreeable days, the power I desire is in superiority,
dominance, the power to make people listen to what you have to say. In the short story Saint Marie
by Louise Erdrich, Marie, like me, seeks power. However, the power she craves is in relation to God
and the convent she has been raised to look up to. At the convent, Marie struggles between wanting
acceptance from the Sisters and desiring superiority over them, especially Leopolda. The first,
acceptance, Marie mentions before joining the convent: "I was going up there to pray as good as
they could" (1). Marie strives to be as good: as holy as the Sisters. Once she joins the convent, she
hopes to be accepted by them. Superiority, the second kind of power, she uses as a threat to
Leopolda. Marie threatened that she would "get to heaven first," and when Leopolda arrived, she
would "shut the gate" (5). Here, she strives for superiority over Leopolda by blocking her out of
heaven rather than

What Is A Historical Overview Of Christianity
It is never enough for a student of theology to receive historical narratives of contexts that speak
about the evil and corruption of humankind, at the same it is important for the student as well as the
reader of this paper to be reminded how meaningful it is to read into the culture of certain people
with respect to history and culture of their time. This week's readings present a historical overview
of Christianity in the U.S., beginning from 1942 until the present. I intend to draw parallels from
Zinn (Chapter1) and Stone (Chapter 6) making a claim that the humankind to this day continues to
crucificy Christ in every day contexts, whether it be culture or politics.

Using my personal interactions with Roman Catholic and United Methodist friends, I can state that
the church rituals and liturgy is more dear to my friends than understanding who are the poor in
today's context? Though the fact would remain that they do understand poor to be refugees and
homeless, and their charitable works and street evangelism has been inspirational for me, yet the
sense of belonging to their in–group, that being an American, United or a Catholic, is central to their
understanding of being a community. It is great to witness their courage to speak about social justice
"for the church" yet, I am curious to know if they see theology with the perspective of an American
only? This claim can go further in detail but my intention is not to point at persons or their beliefs,
rather see parallels in today's context that can help the reader know how easily love goes missing
from one's personal theology and becomes more of a public claim.
Using La Casas' words about the pregnant women that the Indian women gave birth to children
without any pain, I wonder if it was his cultural perspective involved in this insight? As a woman,
myself, I cannot deny the fact that child–bearing is extremely painful. I wonder if La Casas thought
since these women were already wild, that is because they did not wear any clothes, they lacked
sentiments and normal pain too? On a separate note, La Casas also stated about the

Saint Catherine of Siena
Catherine 12/__/2017
Masayda
Saint Catherine of Siena was born in Siena, Italy, March 25, 1347. She later became part of the
Third order of Saint Dominic, at first against her parents' wishes. She was named a Doctor of the
Church in 1970. She obtained this title by writing over four hundred letters to the current pope and
various leaders, trying to restore the Papacy to Rome and bring peace among the whole of Italy.
Catherine also provided for the poor and took care of the sick for endless hours. For most of her life,
she survived on the Holy Eucharist alone, being so repulsed by food that she could not stomach it.
Saint Catherine died on April 29, 1380, at age 33, akin to Jesus Christ. She is patroness against fire,
illness, Europe, Italy, miscarriages, people ridiculed for their faith, sexual temptation, and nurses.

Examples Of Worthy And Unworthy Worship
a. The Worthy and Unworthy Worship
Worship is about God and for the glorification of His name; it is a celebration of love that gives life
and empowering to His people, who worship Him in righteousness through obedience. Specifically,
worship involves abandoning oneself to God as an offering that is being represented by his sacrifice
to atone for his sin. Significantly, people come to His presence to verbalize their deep affection for
Him through such an ardent worship. The Bible delineates that God shows unreserved favor to those
who faithfully love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5); but on the other
hand, God hates and curses those who do not love Him and worship Him selfishly.

They would normally hear His voice to give them divine guidance, warning and instructions on how
they should live, worship and maintain their relationship with Him. (Genesis 4:7). Adam and Eve
loved and feared God; thus, Cain and Abel learned and developed their faith through their teachings
and instructions. (Romans 10:17) Furthermore, they were trained properly to worship God through
an offering.
An excellent example of worthy and unworthy worship in the Old Testament is that of Cain and
Abel since it is the first arresting message of God in Genesis after the fall man and persuasively an
essential message of redemption. Both Cain and Abel worshiped God but approach it differently.
Remarkably, Abel loved and feared God most of all in his life that he carefully obeyed all His
instructions and requirements for worship, while Cain selfishly worshiped God according to His will
and presumptions. Abel, in awe of his creator, offered God the best firstlings of his flocks and their
fat portions. The aroma of Abel's offering reached God and was well pleased and honored. As a
result, God accepted Abel and his love offering and

The Kongolese And Christianity In Kongo
For centuries, Africans and their belief systems have been derided. Instead of being studied as "valid
and meaningful responses to the universal terms of human existence," African religions have often
been considered "exotic objects... peculiar and incomprehensible or repellent." For many Europeans,
Christianity was by far the superior religion, and they strove to convert Africans. One kingdom
where they seemed to enjoy success was Kongo. By 1704, the people living there had been Catholic
"for six generations – nearly two centuries." The Kongolese took great pride in this, believing that it
made them "superior" to their neighbours. Moreover, both the Kongolese and the Church took pride
in the fact that Christianity "had come to Kongo not through conquest and forced conversion, but
through the voluntary conversion of João I." Despite this achievement, though, the Church more –
the Kongolese had to practice Catholicism exactly as the Europeans did. With the coming of Dona
Beatriz Kimpa Vita, who claimed to be possessed by Saint Anthony, this conflict would become
more apparent than ever before. Though the Capuchins succeeded in having Dona Beatriz burnt at
the stake, they failed in their ultimate goal of fully converting the Kongolese to their form of
Catholicism.
The knowledge of Catholicism displayed by the Kongolese was impressive. Though many
Europeans "wondered about their penchant for such things as sacred stones and ancestors' graves...

Virgin Of Immaculate Conception Analysis
An overview of The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception
The Virgin of Immaculate Conception was created in the late 18th century in most likely "South
America, probably Cuzco, Peru" (Dallas Museum of Art). The illustration was formed with oil on a
canvas and the artist is unknown. The artwork is currently being displayed at the Dallas Museum of
Art within the Latin American Art section. The Virgin of Immaculate Conception belongs to the The
Cleofas and Celia de la Garza Collection and was a gift from Mary de la Garza–Hanna and Virginia
de la Garza. Other featured works in this collection are The Ascension of Christ and Flight into
Egypt, both by an unknown artist. This artwork is a religiously stylized piece composed to represent
the values of the Virgin Mary's life, heritage, and future.
Subject History
"The Immaculate Conception of the Virgin began appearing as a subject in art in the 17th century
Spain, and from there it spread in the Spanish colonies of the New World." (Dallas Museum of Art,
2017) The movement of highlighting religious figures within Latin American culture not only
served as simply appreciating masterful works of art, but also as a symbol of a person or family's

The Saint Of Saint Philomena As A Patron Saint
I have chosen St. Philomena to be my patron saint. Saint Philomena was born in Corfu Island,
Greece. Saint Philomena was born a Greek princess and lived for 13 years. She was believed to be a
Virgin Martyr. In 1802, the bones of a female between 13 and 15 were discovered in the catacomb
of St.Priscilla. They were believed to be her remains. They were discovered in May. St. Philomena
was found with three titles that said Lumena/ Paxte/ Cumfi.
When Philomena was 13 years old she took a vow of consecrated virginity. Philomena's father took
his family to the rump to make peace but emperor Diocletian fell in love with Philomena. When she
refused to marry him she was subjected to torture. St. Philomena was scrounged drowned with an
anchor attached to her and shot with arrows. The emperor attempted to kill St.Philomena 3 times but
she survived. Each time she was attacked angels took her side and healed her through a prayer.
Many saw how St.Philomena was treated and that she was still alive and they became Christians.
The emperor was determined to put an end to his shame and stop all the talking and had her
decapitated. All because she refused to lose her virginity to the Roman ruler, Diocletian. According
to my resources, Philomena died at 3:00 in the afternoon just like Jesus.
Immediately following, she appealed to Pope Gregory XVI to begin an examination for the patron
of Filmena which means daughter of light. On January 13, 1837, Pope Gregory XVI named

church. The rules included sitting up straight or standing for the whole service as they do in other
parts of the world, and how to venerate an icon. I was nervous to do all these steps, because I did not
want to mess up or offend anybody. However, I practiced and tried to be prepared. Also, picking an
outfit was a struggle because I wanted to be very respectful to the culture. The church that I attend
when I am at home is very relaxed, and do not care if a person wears jeans to the service. They still
want the people in attendance to be respectful and modest, but besides that, people can wear
whatever the feel comfortable in. When preparing to attend this church however, I picked my outfit
carefully and hoped that I would be dressed up enough. When I arrived, I saw that I was and felt

Summary Of Saint, By Anne Tyler
In Anne Tyler's Saint Maybe as well as in the real world, it is possible to recognize the dangers in
promoting unattainable perfection in masking your life and being unsatisfied with your life. Tyler
uses the idea of masking your life in order to highlight why trying to achieve perfection can be
dangerous. The author illustrates the theme by using Lucy and the way in which she masks her life
from everyone around her. When questioning Lucy's truthfulness about her new dress, Ian thinks,
"She hadn't bought that dress at all. Someone had given it to her. She wasn't out shopping. She was
meeting someone" (Tyler 31). Lucy hides the fact that she was shoplifting in attempt to appear as
perfect. She fails to realize the ways her lies could affect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Tyler uses Doug Bedloe and the way in which he is unsatisfied with his life after retirement to
exemplify this theme. Being a teacher, Doug was used to breaks to rest, "But retirement, it seemed,
was another matter. There wasn't any end to it" (Tyler 159). Doug Bedloe spent his whole life as
what people thought of as the "perfect" working husband and father. He would do the daily tasks of
going to work, coming home to dinner, and spending time with his family. He was so caught up in
living that perfect life that when his retirement came he was lost as to what to do. He attempted to
find several hobbies, but none worked for him. This displays the need to find what you enjoy in life
and not spend it trying to perfect your role because in the end what you thought was perfect will end
up being dissatisfying. In the real–world, the dangers in promoting unachievable perfection can be
seen by people who spend their time attempting to be perfect and end up wasting their entire life.
When people get to a certain age and become wiser, they begin to reflect back on their lives. If you
spend your whole life trying to achieve perfection, when you get to that point you will realize the
experiences and opportunities you missed out while hiding the real

Humans are instinctually curious animals due to their frontal lobe, which causes higher thinking and
a desire for knowledge. The desire for knowledge and higher thinking often leads people to travel
due to the possibility to gain new experiences and discover something new. The mystery behind
certain iconic tourist sights that are brought to light through photography often intrigues and sparks
curiosity in humans with the promise of new knowledge and discovery. The Miraculous Staircase of
Saint Joseph in the Chapel of Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico offers mystery through the unknown
and unexplainable questions that have risen throughout the years regarding the stair cases history
and religious background. The mixture between the unanswered questions concerning the history of
the staircase and its baffling architecture captured through photography throughout the years cause
the stair case to be a focal point of many curious tourist minds in Santa Fe. The Chapel of Loretto
was finished in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1878. The chapel was beautiful, but it was missing a way
to access the choir loft that was twenty–two feet up. Upset by this, the nuns of the chapel prayed to
Saint Joseph the "Master Carpenter" (Helix to Heaven). According to sources, on the ninth day of
the sisters praying a stranger showed up with a donkey and carpentry tools to help with the
predicament. He built the beautiful helical staircase that still stands today in a bout six months, and
then vanished before

Essay On Mother Daughter Talk

  • 1. Essay On Mother Daughter Talk Mother Daughter Talk (July 7, 2017) Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church. Outline: I will start by introducing myself. Explain what my Catholic faith means to me and how it has helped me in my life, especially in my relationship with my own daughter. (I am married with three kids, two boys and one girl. They are all college students right now. I converted to the Catholic Church 23 years ago. I have been an ESL teacher for more than 20 years. I was a RCIA and confirmation teacher for a few years at Christ the Savior and Most Holy Trinity etc.) The main theme of my talk will be: From Fear to Faith As a parent, a teacher, and a catechist, I often find myself talking with teenagers about their problems. Some of my students' problems are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, we are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16–18) Two Sundays ago we read the Gospel of Matthew during mass: Jesus said to the Twelve: "Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna" (Matt 10:26–28). Father Joe, explained to us about how sometimes our lives are driven by fear, parents are afraid of their kids, we are afraid of not conforming to our society. As we reflect on our own fears. What do I fear as teenager, as a mom, as a teacher..? How can we be find the courage and understanding to deal with our personal situations? Without knowing we have all faced and overcame many adversities and when we looked back and reflect upon it we ask ourselves. How did I do it? How did I find the courage? So we are always courageous, although we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Susan Wolf 's Article ' Moral Saints ' And John Stuart... Both Susan Wolf's article "Moral Saints" and John Stuart Mill's book "Utilitarianism" will be discussed here. These works offer expositions of and opinions on the philosophical issue of the moral worth of adhering to a certain set of values, and how a person's motivations for doing so can change their worth and the desirability of their way of life. Wolf offers the position that leading an extremely morally good life is undesirable, while Mill's opposing position is that if morality leads to happiness, then that behavior is preferable. To determine which of these stances on the value of morality has the most pertinence, these two arguments will be outlined and consequently analyzed. Their differences and similarities will be enumerated and described, and consequently their merit will be discussed. Finally, Wolf's moral theory will be proven to be inferior to Mills's, due to its prejudice, lack of supportive evidence, and its inability to be universally applicable. In "Moral Saints", Susan Wolf defines a moral saint as an individual who is as morally good as it is possible to be. Wolf suggests that there are two types of moral saints, utilitarian and Kantian (Wolf 420). A utilitarian saint is a "Loving Saint", one who simply finds their own happiness in the happiness of others and performs moral actions for their own sake (Wolf 420). A Kantian saint is a "Rational Saint", who is inherently different from a utilitarian/loving saint in the sense that they do not necessarily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Role Of Sacred Music On My Worship Experience the role of sacred music in my worship experience is that it touches the inner most parts of my emotions, it stirs my heart and makes me want to sing. I enjoy all kinds of music in worship, upbeat songs to lift you, songs that have special meaning for the time I am going through, praise songs that lift up Jesus and music that unites us as a people. I enjoy music that makes laugh and even music that makes me cry. For me all music is praise as the Bible says, "By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name." (KJV) When we sing, we praise, we speak to the heart of God. Some of my favorite songs are "The Old Rugged Cross", because it was my Mom's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If there was music that was hard for you to hear I would say it is because either you feel convicted or it brings forth bad memories. I know right after my Mom died it was hard for me to hear, "The Old Rugged Cross". But now it makes me think of her and it makes me happy. For me there are many aspects of worship that move me into His divine presence. Most of the time it is through music and worship. I try to come to church ready to worship and think it helps when we come expecting to receive something from God. Music moves me into an emotional state. I can worship God when the offering is being taken. When I preach I feel the anointing of the Lord and feel very close to Him at that time. During Holy Communion I feel united with Christ, the world, the Church and my local fellowship. I think part of our fellowship with Christ depends on mind set when we enter in. Do we come to church with worship in mind? Do we truly come to Church to worship Jesus? I know when I give the opening prayer I normally say something to affect, "Let's forget about what we have to do after church and this next week and let's invite the presence of the Lord." It is so easy to get distracted and miss what is that God has for us that particular service. It is easy not to hear from God and not be blessed. How blessings do we miss simply because we were not paying attention? God can and does speak through all aspects of the service. I was a member of different denomination and ... • 4. The Cruel Hand of God: Secular Themes and Compassionate... The Cruel Hand of God: Secular Themes and Compassionate Leadership in San Manuel Bueno, MĂĄrtir and The Plague Miguel de Unamuno's short story San Manuel Bueno, MĂĄrtir and Albert Camus's tour de force The Plague describe towns whose leaders employ drastically different methods to combat their communal maladies. The Plauge's Dr. Bernard Rieux relies on an unrelentingly harsh process of physical healing, driven not by his empathy for the individual but by his compassion for humanity. Unamuno's priest Don Manuel shrouds his village in the warm embrace of religious serenity, complicated by only one fact: the priest does not believe in God. Despite these divergent philosophies, both characters aspire to their own notions of what constitutes "secular sainthood." Because of the inherent imprecision of such a phrase, the reader is asked to determine what truly determines a "secular saint." Is it someone who is portrayed by the populace as a religious martyr but who actually is quite secular (hereafter known as the "Don Manuel interpretation") or someone who is seen by the populace as cruelly detached and unemotional but is actually a hero (Rieux's guiding philosophy)? Alternatively, one could be drawn to the possibility, as I am, that neither truly constitutes secular sainthood. In attempting to determine the success of both Rieux and Don Manuel in the quest for beatification, one may explore a dichotomy familiar in the theological cannon: whether God ought to be kind, as He is ... • 5. The Catholic Church And The Church The Catholic Church has always been one to hand out praise fairly freely. There is a patron saint for everything, from plague to beekeeping to flowers. There are patron saints for specific cities, patron saints for specific trades, and patron saints for almost any object that comes to mind. However, in the past, the process of becoming a saint, known as canonization, was at the least thoroughly investigative. The Catholic Church has strict beliefs to be upheld and represented. For example, charity work has always been an enormous part of the Church and its mission. The entirety of the Catholic Church, including any and all charities affiliated with the Church, donates approximately $30 billion to charity annually in the U.S. alone (Jacobson). Any person who is on the track to canonization must be one who upholds those values, that same generosity that is so ingrained in the Church. In September of 2016, Mother Teresa is going to be beatified by Pope Francis. While beatification, or the act of confirming that a person has been in heaven since their death, is not the final step in canonization, it is the biggest and most important part of the process. However, Mother Teresa's charity work was not as advantageous as the Catholic Church has let on thus far. Although she is credited with providing food and healthcare to the poor, the terrible quality of her treatment, her lack of qualification, and her fraudulent behaviors are too often overlooked; therefore, Mother Teresa should ... Historical Art Work: Reliquary Châsse While there many gorgeous and historical art works present at National Gallery of Art, I shall only compare and contrast the functions, materials and the context of a pair art works. • 7. Saint Appolinare Analysis Saint Appolinare is the largest figure within the piece and is standing directly over the alter and below the massive cross. The gold jewel encrusted cross is contained within a bright blue circle dotted with gold stars. The green background is filled with plants, shrubs and trees all of which are coloured in varying shades of green. The green background is used to highlight and contrast the white sheep and Saint Apollinare. Most of the sheep and the saint occupy a the same ground level and plane. Unlike the mosaic of Christ the good Shepard the the mosaic of Appolinare is flat and without depth or shading. The piece does exhibit the use of limited overlapping as observed in the legs of the sheep. This overlapping is similar to the observed technique used on ancient Babylonian art. One could postulate that this is a de–evolving of style and a refinement of the message from the church. i think the most intriguing element of the piece is the mysterious imagery above the cross. ... The rulers of the church who constructed the patakrator seen to have shifted there priorities away from expansionist ideologies and towards a more defensive strategy of keeping people within their influence. The change in message from acceptance to that of fear, was a calculated decision, based upon a need to stay relevant and in control. The pantokrator is also a dichotic message perpetrated by the church. I believe, the illiteracy of the congregation was purposeful as it limited access to the original message within the bible. • 8. Is Iconoclasm Acceptable Is Iconoclasm acceptable? Today we have encountered numerous situations of iconoclasm. Iconoclasm means "icon–breaking," which includes the religious as well as the political destruction of images or monuments usually, not always, by those of another group. There are many examples in the past and even recently that prove that iconoclasm still exists today. Thus, iconoclasm is the destruction of icons and sometimes it is believed that it is done because of the difference between religious beliefs. In fact, the word "icon" refers to many different things today. For example, we use this word to refer to the small graphic symbols in our software and powerful cultural figures. Nevertheless, these different meanings retain a connection to its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually, it was stated that he tried to copy the famous photos behind of an artist by the name of Ai Weiwei dropping a vase so this had nothing to do with his religious beliefs. There could be a possibility that this man believed that they were not going to punish him for dropping a vase. Based on damaged art pieces from the past proves that iconoclasts existed and also exist today since there has been plenty of cases about people who have the urge to destroy meaningful art. Whether or not this was done by someone with different beliefs, or just a person who was up to no good, it is still disrespectful. • 9. Confirmation Research Paper There are many things to consider when preparing for Confirmation. Getting confirmed is not an easy thing to do, and it should definitely not be something that you do without equipping yourself beforehand. When you are a child, your parents make the decision of entering you into the church. They also may have forced you to go to mass every Sunday to receive the gift of the Eucharist. After you have been Confirmed, it is no longer up to your parents to make those decisions for you. It is also, vital for you to surround yourself with good role models that want the best for you. You must have someone, other than your parents, to rely on when times get tough. You should also have a good patron saint to model your life after. Additionally, you should be reading scripture, to remind yourself of the word of God. These may seem like small things to think about before you get Confirmed. However, these actions play a crucial role in keeping your relationship with God healthy. Baptism is the first sacrament that you receive. Equally as important as receiving the Eucharist is going to Mass every Sunday. Attending Church is not only one of the ten Commandments, but it is a sacred time of the week. It is time that you should thank God for all that he has given you, and reflect on parts of your week that you could have improved on. There are times when trouble comes trouble comes and we desire the Lord to come to our rescue and act as a shield to stand between danger. I remember one day when it was raining badly and my daughters and I were driving. Suddenly I hit a water patch and the car spun out of control on the busy Highway. Once the car stopped spinning, it landed in the lane going the other direction of traffic. Fortunately, neither of us was harmed or injured. This is an example of buckler or shield. God shielded my daughters and I from all harm and danger that day. David refers to the Lord as a "horn of salvation." The horn is the symbol of strength and conquest. David believes that the Lord is his strength and salvation. He also believes that the Lord is a "stronghold," which is translated as "High Tower." Saint Anne was Palestinian, but born in Bethlehem (Asselin; The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica). Sacred scripture does not "mention... Mary's parents", but "there is not a total lack of information about" them. Some sources believe that Saint Anne could not have children (Asselin; Holweck; "Saint Anne"; The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica) . Because of this, she and her husband, Saint Joachim, made many sacrifices and prayed to God for the gift of a child ("Saint Anne"). "The Protoevangelium of James" states that "an angel appeared to..." them, saying that Saint Anne would "conceive and bear a child who would become famous throughout the world" regardless of her old age (Asselin; Holweck; "Saint Anne."; The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica). St. Joachim and St. Anne are Jesus's grandparents and belong, in a sense, to the "Holy Family" (Asselin). They are often referred to as a holy model by Christian couples (Asselin). "After Jesus and Mary, St. Anne is one of the subjects that appears most frequently in iconography" (Asselin). Saint Anne's feast day is celebrated on "July 26th" (Asselin; Holweck; "Saint Anne."; The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica). Taking a Look at Different Spiritual Disciplines Spiritual Disciplines In my given faith exposure to the Spiritual Disciplines was rather limited; there was fasting that we did during Lent, and prayer that was for a lack of a better term, scripted. Intercessory prayers were made mostly to the venerated saints instead of directly to Jesus Christ. In fact, two of the most common intercessory prayers I said to the saints were to St. Jude, the Patron Saint of Hopelessness and St. Michael, the Archangel, who is the Patron Saint and protector of those in public safety. For many years it was understood that if you needed something in prayer, you prayed to the appropriate saint in ritualistic prayer. As I mentioned fasting was associated with Lent and during the Lenten season your fast was to give up something you were attached to and of course meat on Fridays. Once Lent was over so was your fasting. Even worship is termed differently and is more commonly known as duty or Liturgy ("Liturgy definition," n.d., para. 1). Unfortunately, this sense of duty removes the sense of worship that involves our whole being (Foster, 1998, p. 169). When worship is turned into duty instead of something you freely want to do, it is no wonder that people turn away from corporate worship. Certainly, I knew of these disciplines but their purpose was never really understood and truly, I never knew they were disciplines. To my relief it was discovered that my generation and many others were left in ignorance of the most simple and practical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Essay On Yoruba Religion Due to pressure to hide their Yoruba religious beliefs, Practitioners of SanterÎŻa resorted to concealing or fusing their faith with that of the Roman Catholic Church. Already in place in that Church was the concept of the immortality of the soul, which led to prayers and offerings made to the dead. The churches were full of carved and painted images of departed people who had been declared saints, but who could, if handled rightly, grant requests. Masking the Yoruba deities with the Catholic saints was a means of keeping the old religion alive, even if it meant giving new names to the orishas. Catholicism was the seedbed for the survival of the orishas. In this way they were able to resist being completely subsumed by the European majority. To survive then, the Yoruba slaves created a seeming alliance with the dominant religion. The Spanish Catholic Church did not demand doctrinal adherence to nor an understanding of those doctrines. Usually the "converts" became so under duress, often hundreds were merely sprinkled with holy water – sometimes while still wearing their chains.7 African slaves were dispersed throughout the region – Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti8 , and to other nations of South America, most notably Brazil (which has a high concentration of those who belong to the orisha religion), Venezuela, and other ... • 14. Saint Francis Of Assisi Research Paper When something extraordinary is done by God in the Old Testament, he often changes the person's name as a sign. So, in Catholic tradition, there are many life–changing situations when a person takes on a new name in addition or in place of the old one. Confirmation is one of these life– changing events, and, as per tradition, one who finishes confirmation chooses a patron saint to fill this name. I, Darwin Diaz, have chosen the patron saint of animals and ecology, Saint Francis of Assisi. In this essay will act as a report on Saint Francis of Assisi's life and will illustrate why i fell Saint Francis of Assisi is the right patron saint for me. Francis of Assisi was one of seven children born in late 1181 or early 1182 to Pietro di Bernardone and Pica de Bourlemont. His father was in France on a business trip when Francis was born in Assisi, his mother had him baptized as Giovanni. By age 14, he had left school and become known as a rebellious teenager who frequently drank, partied and broke the city curfew while also being known for his charm and self–admiration. In 1201, he joined a military expedition against Perugia and was taken as a prisoner at Collestrada, spending a year as a captive. When the war ended in 1203, Francis returned to a ... • 15. The Holy Family With Saints Anne And John The Baptist The painting The Holy Family with Saints Anne and John the Baptist, 1592 (oil on canvas) was created by Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola (c.1532–1625). It is currently held at the Collection of the Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami, as a gift from Mrs. Forbes Hawkes and Bridgeman Images. This painting is among the unique pious narrative paintings by Anguissola. "The Holy Family" is the last dated painting by the artist. It was executed when she had just returned to Italy after spending 14 years working for King Philip II at the Spanish court. By this time, she had already married to a Genoese ship captain. Her various visits to court and her personal contacts with great painter at that time largely inspired herself. Through these contacts, she successfully stayed in touch with current developments in art. By closely observing this masterpiece, I argue that the artist perfectly sustain the beauty of counter–reformation arts in her work by use of light and shadow, delicate brushwork and accurate proportions of each subjects. Anguissola is mostly interested in portraits painting, thus this is a unique one as an exception. As one of the well–known Counter reformist works, this masterpiece depicted the interest of religion worship in order to appeal to the viewers in an expressive fashion. "The Holy Family" was done during Catholic Counter–Reformation era. The Protestants mostly removed public art from religion and preferred that society moved towards secular styles. The ... Through reading The Basic by Alister E. McGrath, participating in the forum posts, and taking quizzes, allows me to learned about different theological terms, concepts, and many famous theologians. My knowledge on what I've learned from my reading was challenged by the Engaging–a–Text assignments, located at the end of each chapter. It required me to explain theological terms, concepts and view of each theologian in my own words. Another reading required for this course is called the Patron Saints for Postmoderns by Chris R. The recent assignment, research paper, was the most difficult paper I have ever written which challenge me to think and respond to a pertinent theological question. While I was having a hard time writing this paper, it helps me reflect on my personal faith. As a result of this assignment, I was able to learn how to approach the different theological issue in the world. • 17. The Color Blue Essay and green. Blue as discussed earlier was represented as the color of the God and other religious concepts, so the major incorporation of the color blue in the reliquary chasse indicated the spiritual significance it carried. Envisioning blue on the chasse unified people to Jesus Christ. Many of the reliquary chasse of the 12th century narrated a story; this individual one narrates the crucifixion of Christ. There are several key figures engraved throughout the exterior of the chasse, however since the crucial scene of the execution are shown on the front face of the chasse, that indicates that this chasse was primarily to be seen from the front rather than the sides. If viewed from the front, the top has three figures designed on it. In the center is the God the Father and on his either sides are two unknown saints. All three figures are represented in mandorlas however in different colors. The God of Father is displayed in the blue mandorla while the saints are shown in green mandorla. Here we can interpret a sense of hierarchy because the God of Father is shown in blue, which represents a divine color, however the saints are represented in green that is a mix of blue and yellow. So, blue still exists and represents divinity, yet the mixture of blue and yellow to produce a different shade of blue signifies that the God of Father is above and more important than the saints. The background is enameled with a deeper shade of blue, probably indicating the larger divinity of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. St Lucy Research Paper Saints, by definition, are "any persons of exceptional holiness of life, formally recognized by the Catholic Church." As Catholics, we practice praying to saints to ask for guidance in all types of situations. To become a saint, a person must live a holy life, have proof of miracles, and must be beatified before the official canonization. The saint I chose, Saint Lucia, led a very holy life, and gave her life rather than deny her faith. Saint Lucia (also known as Saint Lucy) was a virgin and martyr from Syracuse, Sicily, in Italy. She was born in the year 283 A.D. Lucia was born into a wealthy Sicilian family. She lived during a period of Christian persecution. Lucia's devotion to Christ began at an early age. In one other portrayal, Lucia gouged her own eyes out in hope to dissuade a resolute suitor. However, in all accounts, Lucia's eyes had been restored at her burial. Lucia's name means light. She is the patron saint of the blind, and all eye patients. In paintings and sculptures, she is almost always portrayed carrying her eyes on a plate. She is very commonly pictured with a palm branch, which is a symbol for triumph over evil. She is venerated on December 13th. When I was in third grade, I received my Confirmation with the Confirmation name of Saint Maria. In the Greensburg Diocese, Confirmation names were the child's middle name, so I did not have a choice in who my Confirmation saint would be. • 19. Catholic Myticism And Catholic Mysticism Catholic mysticism is described as a belief that you can achieve union with God by surrendering yourself completely, and devoting yourself to prayer and contemplation. In this way mystics choose to do these spiritual exercises because they believe it will create a true union between them and God and thus understand what God wants from us, and how to best serve him. Mystics can be found in several religions throughout the world and is surprisingly a tremendous part of the Catholic religion. Catholicism is a branch of Christianity that is traced back to Jesus Christ, who along with the Holy Spirit and God, the Father, are the Holy Trinity in which the Catholic church's beliefs are set on. Catholic mystics beliefs are centered with a deep desire to love God, all three parts, and partake in actions that will serve him and create a deeper bond with him than usual. Throughout the Catholic Church's history many mystics have risen to the forefront to create change within the church that would revolutionize people's beliefs as a whole. To go into a discussion about how catholic mystics revolutionized the catholic church I think that it is important to break down what it means to be a mystic in the catholic religion. First and most importantly I would like to address the fact that there are so many similarities between these catholic mystics. • 20. The Church Is Holy Through Complete Devotion And Love For God The church is holy through complete devotion and love for God. Because the church is holy, the church has the duty to love and take care of all people. Holiness is a dedication to God. This dedication is formed individually by the people of God, who are the church. However, not every person of God is one hundred percent holy. Only Jesus Christ had complete dedication to God, but the church strives for this dedication. Throughout time, there has been role models of holiness within the church known as saints. Throughout the church's history, there has been many saints that lived their life in complete devotion to God. For example, Joan of Arc was known as a "Fool for God." As a teenager, she trusted the Lord and followed her call to lead a French army to victory. She went against all odds but continued to put her faith in the Lord. Even when she was captured and burned at the stake, the saint never lost her faith. James Martin writes in his book, My Life with the Saints, "Joan was devoted to Jesus Christ, to prayer, to the sacraments, to the church, and to its saints. She believed in God even when God asked her to accomplish the seemingly impossible," (My life with the Saints, 25). Pedro Arrupe, another saint studied within the book stated the following about devotion to God, "He or she is a person who hast the conviction that Gods knows, can do, and will do what is best for mankind," (My Life with the Saints, 91). Throughout life, the people of God face many setbacks, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our Moving Fate: A Study of El Greco's Assumption of the Virgin El Greco painted his "Assumption of the Virgin" in 1577 for the convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, Spain. Born in Greece as Domenikos Theotocopoulos, (his nickname translates from Spanish into "The Greek"), El Greco was the top artist of the Spanish School, and was commissioned to paint "Assumption" to adorn the convent's altar. The painting is a daunting size– over six feet wide and twice as tall–surrounded by a wooden frame tinted with a non–uniform metallic gold paint. The oil on canvas creates some, although not obvious texture, and brush strokes are visible only slightly in the garments of the human subjects. The Virgin Mary is the main figure in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An in–depth study reveals mankind's literal presentation of Mary to God for appraisal and judgment, rather than a simple depiction of her journey upward. The painting illustrates man's–not God's– physical act of lifting Mary up, creating a truly dynamic canvas. To do all of this, El Greco uses strong geometric divisions and hidden lines to take control of the viewer's eyes, and sly manipulations of gravity and forces to create an image truly in motion. In the end, El Greco uses the painting's overwhelming size and orientation to alter perspective and succeeds in tying the viewer's fate into the scene itself. The initial focus of the painting is Mary as a whole, or perhaps specifically her face and outstretched arms. El Greco, however, uses a Cartesian grid to relocate the focus to the geometric center of the canvas, a clearly intentional move necessary to create the basis of Mary's upward motion. "Assumption" is strongly divided into four quadrants. The heavens, occupying the upper–half of the canvas, are divided in half vertically by Mary's body, while the Earth is split by a clear part in the crowd that extends directly downward from that same line. The divine and mortal realms are separated fittingly by a line of clouds vertically centered on the canvas. The result is a crosshairs locked in on the area just below the Virgin's feet–the area that will become the most important part of the canvas. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is common knowledge that all Catholics are Christians seeing as it is a denomination of Christianity, but not all Christians are Catholics. Many lean towards the Saint Ulalric due to actual records kept of his canonization as opposed to Saint Swebirt which there are no records for. The question on the exact number of saints in the Church is a whole other problem. There are simply too many to properly count especially since the term 'Saint' was used by early Christians to honor the martyrs during the Roman persecution of Christians from 30–100 A.D. Angels are also hailed as saints one example being Saint Michael the Archangel who is arguably among the most popular Saints throughout history. Just as there are different entities as saints, there are different types of saints. The immersion experiences in which I participated were great opportunities to learn about the culture in more depth. The first experience I was able to attend was on June 13, 2015. In downtown Indianapolis Indiana, I had the opportunity to attend the Italian Culture Festival. Organized each year by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, this festival was full of music, cultural food, and I was lucky enough to experience a traditional Italian religious procession and Mass (Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). The festival was packed with people from the city and from the Italian culture. I had never experienced a festival such as the one held in Indianapolis. Being from the east coast and not of the Italian culture, the festival was a refreshing yet, uncomfortable experience at times. The locals tried to get me to dance along but, I could not keep up with them on the fly. The tarantella is one of the most famous of Italian dances and performers dance quickly to an upbeat song (Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). • 25. What Is Worship And What It Is Not What Worship Is And What It Is Not. What is the true meaning of worshipping God? Is it intense emotional outpouring of an individual? Is it smoke, lights, and loud music reminiscent of some sort of sanctified bar room? Does it require music or sound at all? What exactly is required of an individual who wishes to glorify his Creator and Redeemer? These are the questions that will be discussed in this paper. What is worship? It can be defined as many things from solitude and prayer with God; It may involve music to some, in an effort to draw one closer into the presence of the Almighty. The best definition of worship is this: it is an end unto itself; it is not a means unto something else. When we try to worship for the sake of certain benefits that may be received, the act ceases to be worship; for then it attempts to use God as a means to something else. (Segler 5) It may be nigh unto impossible to pinpoint a single form of worship that is applicable to everyone, but a single concept must be present for all believers. This is the concept of surrender and obedience to God. It is the humbleness to something greater than oneself. It the realization that man is nothing but sand on the seashore, while God is an endless sea. Mankind is finite; he is only given a few years, while God is the Ancient of Days. Whether this humble surrender is in the silence of solitude or in the presence of other believers, it is foolish to speculate. Worship is to quicken the conscience to the ... • 29. A Saintlike Power In Saint Marie By Louise Erdrich A Saintlike Power There are different kinds of power. There is, of course, the power over another person. A power in superiority, in dominance that makes people afraid. There's power in acceptance too. Any person who has been welcomed by their peers has more power than one that has not. In my own life, I struggle with power, and what kind of power I should want. My need for power likely stems from a fundamental desire to fit in. Some days the power I crave is simply in acceptance. Acceptance from peers, friends, or family. On other, less agreeable days, the power I desire is in superiority, dominance, the power to make people listen to what you have to say. In the short story Saint Marie by Louise Erdrich, Marie, like me, seeks power. However, the power she craves is in relation to God and the convent she has been raised to look up to. At the convent, Marie struggles between wanting acceptance from the Sisters and desiring superiority over them, especially Leopolda. The first, acceptance, Marie mentions before joining the convent: "I was going up there to pray as good as they could" (1). Marie strives to be as good: as holy as the Sisters. Once she joins the convent, she hopes to be accepted by them. Superiority, the second kind of power, she uses as a threat to Leopolda. Marie threatened that she would "get to heaven first," and when Leopolda arrived, she would "shut the gate" (5). Here, she strives for superiority over Leopolda by blocking her out of heaven rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Daily, the Mantellata would scourge herself, abstain from sleep, and wear an iron chain around her body, which nearly ended her life until her confessor commanded her to never wear it again. • 33. Examples Of Worthy And Unworthy Worship a. The Worthy and Unworthy Worship Worship is about God and for the glorification of His name; it is a celebration of love that gives life and empowering to His people, who worship Him in righteousness through obedience. Specifically, worship involves abandoning oneself to God as an offering that is being represented by his sacrifice to atone for his sin. Significantly, people come to His presence to verbalize their deep affection for Him through such an ardent worship. The Bible delineates that God shows unreserved favor to those who faithfully love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5); but on the other hand, God hates and curses those who do not love Him and worship Him selfishly. They would normally hear His voice to give them divine guidance, warning and instructions on how they should live, worship and maintain their relationship with Him. (Genesis 4:7). Adam and Eve loved and feared God; thus, Cain and Abel learned and developed their faith through their teachings and instructions. (Romans 10:17) Furthermore, they were trained properly to worship God through an offering. An excellent example of worthy and unworthy worship in the Old Testament is that of Cain and Abel since it is the first arresting message of God in Genesis after the fall man and persuasively an essential message of redemption. Both Cain and Abel worshiped God but approach it differently. Remarkably, Abel loved and feared God most of all in his life that he carefully obeyed all His instructions and requirements for worship, while Cain selfishly worshiped God according to His will and presumptions. Abel, in awe of his creator, offered God the best firstlings of his flocks and their fat portions. The aroma of Abel's offering reached God and was well pleased and honored. • 34. The Kongolese And Christianity In Kongo For centuries, Africans and their belief systems have been derided. Instead of being studied as "valid and meaningful responses to the universal terms of human existence," African religions have often been considered "exotic objects... peculiar and incomprehensible or repellent." For many Europeans, Christianity was by far the superior religion, and they strove to convert Africans. One kingdom where they seemed to enjoy success was Kongo. By 1704, the people living there had been Catholic "for six generations – nearly two centuries." The Kongolese took great pride in this, believing that it made them "superior" to their neighbours. Moreover, both the Kongolese and the Church took pride in the fact that Christianity "had come to Kongo not through conquest and forced conversion, but through the voluntary conversion of JoĂŁo I." Despite this achievement, though, the Church more – the Kongolese had to practice Catholicism exactly as the Europeans did. With the coming of Dona Beatriz Kimpa Vita, who claimed to be possessed by Saint Anthony, this conflict would become more apparent than ever before. Though the Capuchins succeeded in having Dona Beatriz burnt at the stake, they failed in their ultimate goal of fully converting the Kongolese to their form of Catholicism. The knowledge of Catholicism displayed by the Kongolese was impressive. Though many Europeans "wondered about their penchant for such things as sacred stones and ancestors' graves... they never doubted that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Saint Of Saint Philomena As A Patron Saint I have chosen St. Philomena to be my patron saint. Saint Philomena was born in Corfu Island, Greece. Saint Philomena was born a Greek princess and lived for 13 years. She was believed to be a Virgin Martyr. In 1802, the bones of a female between 13 and 15 were discovered in the catacomb of St.Priscilla. They were believed to be her remains. They were discovered in May. St. Philomena was found with three titles that said Lumena/ Paxte/ Cumfi. When Philomena was 13 years old she took a vow of consecrated virginity. Philomena's father took his family to the rump to make peace but emperor Diocletian fell in love with Philomena. When she refused to marry him she was subjected to torture. St. Philomena was scrounged drowned with an anchor attached to her and shot with arrows. The emperor attempted to kill St.Philomena 3 times but she survived. Each time she was attacked angels took her side and healed her through a prayer. Many saw how St.Philomena was treated and that she was still alive and they became Christians. The emperor was determined to put an end to his shame and stop all the talking and had her decapitated. All because she refused to lose her virginity to the Roman ruler, Diocletian. According to my resources, Philomena died at 3:00 in the afternoon just like Jesus. Immediately following, she appealed to Pope Gregory XVI to begin an examination for the patron of Filmena which means daughter of light. On January 13, 1837, Pope Gregory XVI named ... • 37. The For The Interethnic Church Experience For the interethnic church experience, I went to St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. I attended with three of my friends Ashley, Cassandra, and Jennifer. My friends came along in order to gain the experience from the church with me. We all had different experiences, but we all felt glad that we went together and to the church. When planning to go to the church, I read some articles on the proper etiquette of the church, and how to act in an Orthodox church. The rules included sitting up straight or standing for the whole service as they do in other parts of the world, and how to venerate an icon. I was nervous to do all these steps, because I did not want to mess up or offend anybody. However, I practiced and tried to be prepared. Also, picking an outfit was a struggle because I wanted to be very respectful to the culture. The church that I attend when I am at home is very relaxed, and do not care if a person wears jeans to the service. They still want the people in attendance to be respectful and modest, but besides that, people can wear whatever the feel comfortable in. When preparing to attend this church however, I picked my outfit carefully and hoped that I would be dressed up enough. When I arrived, I saw that I was and felt more relaxed. I was also nervous about the language barrier, as I do not know Serbian. I did not know if the whole service would be in Serbian or if only part of it would be in a foreign language. I was excited to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Summary Of Saint, By Anne Tyler In Anne Tyler's Saint Maybe as well as in the real world, it is possible to recognize the dangers in promoting unattainable perfection in masking your life and being unsatisfied with your life. Tyler uses the idea of masking your life in order to highlight why trying to achieve perfection can be dangerous. The author illustrates the theme by using Lucy and the way in which she masks her life from everyone around her. When questioning Lucy's truthfulness about her new dress, Ian thinks, "She hadn't bought that dress at all. Someone had given it to her. She wasn't out shopping. She was meeting someone" (Tyler 31). Lucy hides the fact that she was shoplifting in attempt to appear as perfect. She fails to realize the ways her lies could affect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tyler uses Doug Bedloe and the way in which he is unsatisfied with his life after retirement to exemplify this theme. Being a teacher, Doug was used to breaks to rest, "But retirement, it seemed, was another matter. There wasn't any end to it" (Tyler 159). Doug Bedloe spent his whole life as what people thought of as the "perfect" working husband and father. He would do the daily tasks of going to work, coming home to dinner, and spending time with his family. He was so caught up in living that perfect life that when his retirement came he was lost as to what to do. He attempted to find several hobbies, but none worked for him. This displays the need to find what you enjoy in life and not spend it trying to perfect your role because in the end what you thought was perfect will end up being dissatisfying. In the real–world, the dangers in promoting unachievable perfection can be seen by people who spend their time attempting to be perfect and end up wasting their entire life. When people get to a certain age and become wiser, they begin to reflect back on their lives. If you spend your whole life trying to achieve perfection, when you get to that point you will realize the experiences and opportunities you missed out while hiding the real ... The desire for knowledge and higher thinking often leads people to travel due to the possibility to gain new experiences and discover something new. The mystery behind certain iconic tourist sights that are brought to light through photography often intrigues and sparks curiosity in humans with the promise of new knowledge and discovery. The Miraculous Staircase of Saint Joseph in the Chapel of Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico offers mystery through the unknown and unexplainable questions that have risen throughout the years regarding the stair cases history and religious background. The mixture between the unanswered questions concerning the history of the staircase and its baffling architecture captured through photography throughout the years cause the stair case to be a focal point of many curious tourist minds in Santa Fe. The Chapel of Loretto was finished in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1878. The chapel was beautiful, but it was missing a way to access the choir loft that was twenty–two feet up. Upset by this, the nuns of the chapel prayed to Saint Joseph the "Master Carpenter" (Helix to Heaven). According to sources, on the ninth day of the sisters praying a stranger showed up with a donkey and carpentry tools to help with the predicament. He built the beautiful helical staircase that still stands today in a bout six months, and then vanished before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
