The United States was founded with the vision for freedom. Oppression had been experienced by our founding fathers and they knew it was absolutely
necessary to provide structure to prevent oppressive governments in the future. The solution was a limited government that bordered the edge of
anarchy, yet just enough structure to have order and civility. The design was to stay far from elitism so nogovernment could control the people and
allow the people to control the government. Today's current political climate allows us to take one of two sides: Democrat or Republican. The
Democrats believe the Republicans have it all wrong because they are avoiding the opportunities for government to take care of the people. The
Republicans think the Democrats have it all wrong because they are destroying the economy and power of America by redistributing the wealth to
those who have not legitimately earned it.
While we have been busy feuding between the two parties we have not even noticed the transition our country has taken. Today we are so far from the
Constitution and we are now skirting the edge of tyranny. Throughout the years, political scientist and philosophers have expanded on a wide array

If we all work together to help people out we can get a lot of ideas put together and do a lot of good for the group. In Canada we are a mostly
collective country especially next to the states. We have universal health care which widely helps out people who wouldn't otherwise be able to see a
doctor or dentist without it.
If the government helps people out then the standard of living would increase. Poverty could be diminished, health problems could be cured, and
people would be able to afford leisurely activities putting money back into the government to help others out. Health care would be free and

Public property is used and is managed by a collective to benefit everyone in the community. All kids can go to school no matter their parents
financial state giving them a chance to finish and go on to post secondary and get a good paying job. In Saudi Arabia and Sweden schooling is
paid for by the government from kindergarten all the way to post secondary education. It benefits everyone because everyone can go to school

The Haymarket affair took place in Chicago on May 4, 1886 during the period in American history known as the Gilded age. During this period there
was political corruptness and tension between the rich and poor. The Haymarket affair occurred after protesters were killed by police while striking

was able to determine the power of self–worth in a chaotic and lifeless world. While being an egoist is associated and commonly misunderstood as
egotism, being an egoist is not a malicious philosophy for it unveils individualism and is an essential aspect to the equilibrium of equality. Prometheus

The Doctrine Of The State
In this presentation of his notion of the state he ends up putting forward things which inspires some critics to accuse him of having totalitarian
leanings. Things such as his assertion of the necessity of the state for humanity, his strong belief in an overriding spirit to a society, his connecting of
freedom to reason and social order, are controversial notions. His allegiance to positive freedom brings attack from supporters of negative freedom, his
notions of differing states for suiting differing societies appears anti–democratic and imperialistic, and his preference for a constitutional monarch
seems unusual. It is these matters and others which have brought merited and less merited critique and objection to his work.
It is the case that Hegel does treat the state as essential. In part this is due to his notion of positive freedom and his notion of the state as a means for
actualizing a collective human will. It is also in part related to his preference for both the duty of ancient Athens and the Kantian style of ethics
guided by individual reason; for which he tries to find a synthesis. In this it seems that he is aiming for a unification of collective and individual spirit
and freedom. Now some of the statements he makes, such as "it is a false and dangerous assumption that only the people possess reason and insight"
and "a state is a matter of trained intelligence", and things like insisting the need for a single symbolic ruler, do seem to rather statist sounding

The Turtle By Kay Ryan
Throughout the course of history, human nature has embraced conformity and being average. However, human nature expresses itself in a variety of
ways and these differences make everyone an individual. Civil rights activists have recently made a strong effort to encourage people to embrace and
express their differences. The recent push for a more open society has resulted in both backlash and acceptance. Kay Ryan explores what being an
individual means and the choices we can and cannot make about ourselves in her poem "The Turtle". She uses the turtle, an often ill–suited creature in
regard to survival, to contradict the common misconception that people can choose their sexuality. Kay Ryan, an open lesbian, often uses poetry to
express her position on particular subjects in regard to sexual orientation.
From the first line of the poem, Kay Ryan sets up her argument. The speaker poses an interesting question, "who would be a turtle who could help
it?" Alternatively, the speaker's question could also be worded as who would be gay if they could help it, because of the history behind being openly
gay, even in a progressive country like America. American society often vilifies people for their sexuality. Teenagers find themselves homeless and
adults without jobs, despite what any law says. So, if one could choose to be somebody else why would they then choose to be treated as sub–human?
The logic and the argument brings it to the conclusion that no one would ever choose being gay

Paulo Freire : The Great Humanistic And Historical Task Of...
Paulo Freire was one of the many theorist we covered this semester and he was one of them how refer that the oppressed had to be the oppressors.
One statement he made in the reading Freire (1992) "the great humanistic and historical task of the oppressed" is to "liberate themselves and their
oppressors as well."(1). His statement is very powerful to the point where he is making us think that the only way to have humanity is that they
have to act as the oppressors towards the people who are oppressing them so that they can see that it 's a problem that both groups have to
transformed into a freedom. "Only power that springs from the weakness of the oppressed will be sufficiently strong to free both"(1). I also find this
quote of him very important to what he means being oppressors against the group that oppresses them very important because their struggle as the
oppressed group is to make others realize that it 's a problem that has to be fixed before it becomes more of a bigger deal and more violence methods
erupt.
Some of the methods that Freire used for his argument was one being the oppressor. Freire (1992) says that " Only power that springs from the
weakness of the oppressed will be sufficiently strong to free both" (p.1). Meaning that he refers it as the oppressed group gains the power to

The Civil Rights Movement During The 1960 ' S
The American South in the 1960 's and Ancient Thebes both had a rigid social and legal system that did not effectively and legitimately represent
the majority of its citizens. In both eras, an antihero rose up to defy the establish system. Dr. King, in the 1960 's, protested unjust laws and was
jailed and viewed as an antagonist. Similarly, in Ancient Thebes, Antigone is sentenced to death for doing what she believes is right, regardless of
the law. If Dr. King failed, he stood to lose, in addition to his life, his reputation as someone who wanted true change for all African Americans.
Furthermore, future generations of colored people would have to endure the same injustice that he was protesting against. Also, if his nonviolent
ways failed there were people ready to take the civil rights movement in a violent direction. If Antigone 's defiance had failed, her brother will never
find peace in the afterlife, and Thebes will never find unity and solace after its civil war. Additionally, she too could lose her life for her outward
defiance. Therefore, both Dr. King 's nonviolent resistance, along with writing his letter from Birmingham Jail, and Antigone 's violation of Kreon 's
edict are justified by what they stood to lose if they did not take their respective actions. Dr. King choose to address more than just his dissenters in
