14. Replacing today and the future
With the commercialization of 3M™Novec™1230 Fire Protection Fluid (C6-flouroketone), there is now a
reason to phase-out first generation Halon alternatives. SEVO Systems offers a long-term sustainable choice.
With the regulatory status of today and tomorrow, Novec 1230 fluid is the Safe Environmental Choice that
meets the acceptance worldwide. HFCs have been identified in the Kyoto Protocol as greenhouse gases
targeted for emission reduction because of their high global warming potential. Due to the environmental
impact of HFCs, countries around the world have already taken action on its use.
Countries that have taken action towards HFCs include:
Norw a y – enacted a tax on imports of HFCs/PFCs of 180 NKr per ton (0.18 NKR per kg CO2), for
HFC-227ea tax would be 552 NKr ($72 USD) per kg.
G e rm a n y – Environment Ministry issued a paper in October 2002 with initial proposals for HFC
controls, options include use restrictions or bans. German industry is generally opposed. A proposal
was expected in June, but may be delayed indefinitely.
De n m a rk – first comprehensive national law banning HFCs enacted on July 1, most uses banned by
2007.
Au s tria – bans HFCs for fire protection in 2003, many uses banned by 2008 with a procedure for
review in 2005 to determine whether the phase-out dates are feasible.
Sw itze rla n d – HFC extinguishing agents were banned on January 1, 2003.
Along with countries that have begun the phase-out of HGWMs, a number of global companies have begun
the phase-out in order to make their company a more sustainable business.

25. Why SEVO Systems/Novec
1230
Halon drop-in replacement
- 2 to 1 agent replacement
- 1 to 1 cylinder replacement
- Utilize existing pipe network
- Variable operating pressure
- Save labor & downtime
HFC drop-in replacement
- 1 to 1 cylinder replacement due to fill density
(75 vs. 70 lbs/ft3
)
26. Why SEVO Systems/Novec
1230?
Life Safety
- Unlike other Halon replacing systems/clean agents
Novec 1230 at Design Concentration gives customer
67-150% Safety Margin,
due to a NOAEL/LOAEL 10%
- Even at inerting concentrations, Novec 1230 allows
for a minimum life safety margin
Vs. HFCs
- Low NOAEL/LOAEL allowing for a very low to zero
margin for life safety
27. Why SEVO Systems/Novec
1230?
Environmental
- Zero Ozone Depletion
- Global Warming Potential of 1
- Atmospheric Lifetime of 3-5 days
- Meet today and future regulations
Vs. HFCs
- High Global Warming Potential
- Atmospheric Lifetime measured in years
- Environmental regulations will force phase-out

Editor's Notes
Good Morning, Thanks for being here today. My name is Jon Flamm, and I will be talking this morning about the new Clean Agnet Extinguishing System from SEVO Systems which is designed with Novec 1230. I will be informing of today about our systems, approvals, benifits of our systems, and design parameters.
To give
SEVO Systems is new company developed by Modular Protection Corp. Created for the distribution for extinguishings systems desgined with 3M Novec 1230. From the benifits of Novec 1230 fluid, from its Life Safty, to Environmental aspects needed to be a sustainable choice. SEVO "Safe Environmental Choice"
Modular Protection Corp. established over 40 years ago,Development of Modular pre-engineered systems, the complete clean agent system with control panal as one unit that can be wheeled in and bolted to the wall, which where very big in the telco era, which isn't what it used be. Modular has a long relationhip with 3M going back to the development of CEA-410 systems.
Towards the end of initial developmet of Novec 1230 in our systems, year and a half ago, we began devoping our SEVO Systems distributors. Today we have SEVO distributors in over 30 countries world wide. As well as a list that we have not had time to get to.
As the first of four OEMs to to develop Novec 1230 systems,
Our intial testing began trying to mist and local application, when testing different nozzles we found that we are going to be able to use it as a Total Flooding agent as well.
With the request of 3M we began testing to find the characteristics of its Two-Phase Flow and getting it to gasify. The when began testing to establish extinguishing concentrations and nozzle distribution.
Air shipped unpresurized in a moments notice to any where in the world.
Most fluorochemicals have a significantly higher GWPs because fluorochemicals are very efficient energy absorbers. They tend to absorb energy in the atmosphere where no other compounds do—at wavelengths that normally pass unhindered through the atmosphere. They also typically have longer atmospheric lifetimes which greatly affects global warming potential.
This chart shows the GWP of various compounds. Naturally occurring materials like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane have GWPs from 1 to about 300. The first generation of halon replacements—HFCs—have GWPs from the thousands to the tens of thousands. Other materials produced as potential replacements were perfluorocarbons, PFCs. Again, they have GWPs in the thousands. The highest global warming potential known is for a material called sulfur hexafluoride which has a GWP of 22,200.
One of the first of 3M’s new generation of replacements for ozone-depleting compounds was hydrofluoroethers, which are sold under the Novec brand name. These materials have GWPs that start to get down to the level of naturally occurring compounds. What’s even more outstanding with Novec 1230 fluid is now you’re in the range of CO2: 1.
