The webinar discussed how to build financial mobile apps in record time. It covered 5 themes that impact a mobile app's speed to market: 1) choosing between a feature-rich or simple initial scope, 2) deciding between native or cross-platform development, 3) using internal or external resources for app development, 4) whether to include or exclude proprietary data integration, and 5) leveraging cloud-based market data or traditional data feeds. Executives from Xignite, Visible Market, and OpenFin then provided their perspectives on these themes. The webinar concluded with a Q&A session.

Larry:First a quick agenda for today’s seminar. [Go thru each]Also note that we will send the free download codes for the StockTouch app after the presentation to the first 50 registrants who also joined us for today’s session.
Larry introduces the panel, starting with Stephane. Keep this quick.
When developing a mobile app, it’s important to understand the dependencies that impact your ability to get the app out quickly. For instance, if you choose to create an externally facing app with sensitive customer information, this will take extra time to run through compliance, so you may need to choose to simplify in other areas and limit functionality in your first release. Our panel met prior to today’s meeting and came up with 5 key questions that impact the speed of development and will help you shape your mobile strategy. We’ll go through each of these, starting with #1, What’s the scope of your app?
Considerations:Innovative vs. “Me too” (Jennifer with StockTouch vid running) (2 min)Internal or external facing? (Mazy)Market data only vs. sensitive customer data (Mazy) Get compliance involved early (Mazy)Single vs. multi-asset class (Stephane)Narrow functionality vs. broad functionality (Jennifer)Moderator: We polled our panel of experts on key questions that you should ask when shaping your mobile strategy. They agreed that the first question is the scope of the app. Stephane, let’s kick things off with you – how should firms think about the scope of their mobile apps?Stephane: Great question. Apps should be simple. They don’t need to include all of your functionality. Etc.Moderator: Mazy, how are firms you are working with thinking about this issue?Mazy: As Stephane said, it’s important to keep it simple. Simple apps provide better user experience and better time-to-market. Once you get the first version of your app in the hands of users, they will tell you what else the app needs to do. Etc.Moderator: Jennifer, with Stocktouch, you built something truly innovative. We’re going to run a short video of Stocktouch in the background. While we do, tell us about how your firm balanced innovation with the need to get your app out there and generating revenue. Jennifer: [Explain the thinking behind StockTouch v1 and what functionality will come later. Maybe talk about some features they didn’t know users wanted until after they had launched their app and received feedback.]
Considerations:Native (Jennifer)Requires more timeTakes full advantage of technologyRicher user experienceCross-platform (Mazy)Rapid development with HTML5May not exploit full depth of each platform’s potentialHybrid possibilitiesModerator: Ok, let’s turn now to a second question which is the choice of platform. Should firms build native apps or should they been using HTML5? Jennifer, you guys decided to build a native iOS application and put it in the App Store. Can you talk a little about why you made that decision?Jennifer: Sure, here’s why we decided to build a native app. Etc.Moderator: Mazy, your firm is focused entirely on helping financial providers build using HTML5. Can you talk about the advantages you see in HTML5? Can you build an HTML5 app that is as good as a native one?Mazy: Yes. If you know what you’re doing or have the right tools, you can build an app in HTML5 that provides the same UX as a native app. There are some limitations. The advantages are cross-platform and it gets you out of the App Store. You can overcome the limitations with a hybrid approach. Etc.Moderator: Stephane, what are you hearing from customers on this debate?Stephane: …
Considerations: Internal (Stephane)Potential cost savingsSlower ramp upMay need to access developer toolkitExternal (Mazy)Faster developmentHave the toolsPotentially higher costsModerator: Another key question for firms is to decide whether they are going to build their app internally or to out-source the development. Jennifer, did your team build StockTouch in-house?Jennifer: Yes, we built in-house. [Expand on reasons why and the experience – time to delivery]Moderator: Mazy, OpenFin is working with a number of customers in the space. How are firms making this decision?Mazy: We are seeing some firms make the decision to build in-house and others are outsourcing. There are several considerations. Is the technology core? Do they have the expertise? Is it a priority? What is the cost? OpenFin provides an HTML5 toolkit that can be used in-house or by a 3rd party development firm.
Considerations:Accessing sensitive customer info involves security hurdles (Stephane)Are there compliance issues around customer information? (Stephane)Do you require access to real-time portfolio info? (Stephane)Should you develop your own web services? (Stephane)Should you store data locally on the device? (Mazy)
Cloud-based solution (Jennifer/Mazy)“Plug and play” web APIsBypass infrastructureScalable from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of usersTraditional data feed (Stephane)May be required for low latency appsExpensive ramp upRequires infrastructure and maintenance
