ONE IMPRESSION FROM HELSINKI

2. • Helsinki was established as
a trading town by King
Gustav I of Sweden in 1550
as the town of Helsingfors,
which he intended to be a
rival to the Hanseatic city of
Reval (today known as
Tallinn, the capital of
Estonia). Russian Emperor
Alexander II of Russia
moved the Finnish capital
from Turku to Helsinki in
1812 to reduce Swedish
influence in Finland and to
bring the capital closer to
St. Petersburg.

3. • Alexander II was the Emperor
of Russia from 2 March 1855
until his assassination on 13
March 1881. He was also the
King of Poland and the Grand
Duke of Finland. Alexander II
had important connections
with Romania. The most
important queen of Romania,
Mary of Romania, who
fondated The Great Romania
in 1918, was his grandchild.
In Helsinki, Alexander II is
very respected.

the Finnish Model in Education.
