Unit Plan:
Teaching Macbeth
BY SYDNEY HOLLAND
Analyze the leaner
 THE LESSON IS BEING TAUGHT TO AN HIGH SCHOOL BLOCK (90 MINUTES)
ENGLISH CLASS; IT IS FOR STUDENT IN THE 12TH GRADE, APPROXIMATELY THE
AGES OF 17-18.
 THERE ARE 15 STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM: 7 BOYS AND 8 GIRLS.
 THERE IS A VAST DIFFERENCE IN LEARNING STYLES. 6 OF THEM ARE VISUAL
LEARNERS, 5 OF THEM ARE AUDITORY LEARNERS, AND THE 4 OF THEM ARE
KINESTHETIC LEANERS.
 IN ADDITION, 3 OF THE STUDENTS HAVE ADD.
Main OBJECTIVE
 THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS LESSON IS TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE PLOT AND
MEANING OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S PLAY MACBETH.
 THEY WILL LEARN THROUGH VIDEOS, BOOKS, MOVIES, SCRIPTS, AND
PICTURES.
 BY THE END OF THE WEEK, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THE MAIN
EVENTS OF MACBETH, WITH 85% ACCURACY.
Day by Day Breakdown
 DAY ONE: THE CLASS IS INTRODUCED TO THE CHARACTERS, THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF MACBETH IS
DISCUSSED, AND ARE ENFORCED BY SHOWING CORRESPONDING PICTURES. STUDENTS ARE GIVEN THE ROLE THEY
WILL HAVE FOR THE WEEK. THE CLASS ORALLY READS ACT 1 OF MACBETH. THE STUDENTS BREAK UP INTO GROUPS
AND REENACT DIFFERENT SCENES FROM ACT 1.
 DAY TWO: STUDENTS DISCUSS WHAT HAPPENED IN ACT 1 AND THEN PROCEED TO ORALLY READ ACT 2. STUDENTS
BREAK UP INTO GROUPS, AND REENACT KEY POINTS FROM ACT 2. THE STUDENTS THEN RECEIVE A SHORT QUIZ ON
ACTS 1 AND 2, TO CHECK UNDERSTANDING. THE CLASS THEN WRITES A ½ PAGE TO 1 PAGE OF WHAT THEY THINK
OR HOPE WILL HAPPEN NEXT IN THE STORY, AND THEN SHARE WITH THEIR PEERS.
 DAY THREE: THE CLASS REVIEWS ACT 2, THEN ORALLY READ ACT 3. STUDENTS ARE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS AND THEN
REENACT SCENES FROM ACT 3. STUDENTS WILL WATCH CLIPS FROM MACBETH OF MAIN POINTS THAT HAVE
OCCURRED BETWEEN ACTS 1-3. THE CLASS WILL THEN CREATE WANTED POSTERS, OR HIT MAN FOR HIRE ADS, OR
CAMPAIGN ADS FOR MACBETH THE KING BY INCORPORATING INFORMATION FROM ACTS 1-3.
 DAY FOUR: STUDENTS REVIEW ACT 3, THEN ORALLY READ ACT 4. STUDENTS THEN DIVIDE INTO GROUPS AND
REENACT SCENES FROM ACT 4. A SHORT QUIZ WILL BE GIVEN OUT ON ACTS 3 AND 4. THE CLASS DISCUSSES WHAT
THEY THINK THE PROPHECIES MEAN. THE CLASS WRITES A JOURNAL ENTRY AS EITHER MACBETH OR LADY MACBETH,
ON WHAT THEY THINK THE CHARACTER IS FEELING, AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THEM IN THE END.
 DAY FIVE: STUDENTS REVIEW ACT 4, AND PREDICT THE ENDING TO THE PLAY. STUDENTS READ ORALLY ACT 5.
STUDENTS BREAK INTO GROUPS AND REENACT THE FINAL SCENES. THE CLASS IS SHOWN CLIPS OF THE MAIN PARTS
FROM THE MOVIE MACBETH FROM ACTS 4-5. A SHORT QUIZ IS GIVEN ON ACT 5. STUDENTS DISCUSS THE END OF THE
PLAY AND WRITE A 1 PAGE RESPONSE PAPER ON THE PLAY MACBETH. CLASS WATCHES SUMMARY VIDEO.

Analyze the leaner  THE LESSON IS BEING TAUGHT TO AN HIGH SCHOOL BLOCK (90 MINUTES) ENGLISH CLASS; IT IS FOR STUDENT IN THE 12TH GRADE, APPROXIMATELY THE AGES OF 17-18.  THERE ARE 15 STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM: 7 BOYS AND 8 GIRLS.  THERE IS A VAST DIFFERENCE IN LEARNING STYLES. 6 OF THEM ARE VISUAL LEARNERS, 5 OF THEM ARE AUDITORY LEARNERS, AND THE 4 OF THEM ARE KINESTHETIC LEANERS.  IN ADDITION, 3 OF THE STUDENTS HAVE ADD.

Main OBJECTIVE  THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS LESSON IS TO FULLY UNDERSTAND THE PLOT AND MEANING OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S PLAY MACBETH.  THEY WILL LEARN THROUGH VIDEOS, BOOKS, MOVIES, SCRIPTS, AND PICTURES.  BY THE END OF THE WEEK, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THE MAIN EVENTS OF MACBETH, WITH 85% ACCURACY.
  • 4. Day by Day Breakdown  DAY ONE: THE CLASS IS INTRODUCED TO THE CHARACTERS, THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF MACBETH IS DISCUSSED, AND ARE ENFORCED BY SHOWING CORRESPONDING PICTURES. STUDENTS ARE GIVEN THE ROLE THEY WILL HAVE FOR THE WEEK. THE CLASS ORALLY READS ACT 1 OF MACBETH. THE STUDENTS BREAK UP INTO GROUPS AND REENACT DIFFERENT SCENES FROM ACT 1.  DAY TWO: STUDENTS DISCUSS WHAT HAPPENED IN ACT 1 AND THEN PROCEED TO ORALLY READ ACT 2. STUDENTS BREAK UP INTO GROUPS, AND REENACT KEY POINTS FROM ACT 2. THE STUDENTS THEN RECEIVE A SHORT QUIZ ON ACTS 1 AND 2, TO CHECK UNDERSTANDING. THE CLASS THEN WRITES A ½ PAGE TO 1 PAGE OF WHAT THEY THINK OR HOPE WILL HAPPEN NEXT IN THE STORY, AND THEN SHARE WITH THEIR PEERS.  DAY THREE: THE CLASS REVIEWS ACT 2, THEN ORALLY READ ACT 3. STUDENTS ARE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS AND THEN REENACT SCENES FROM ACT 3. STUDENTS WILL WATCH CLIPS FROM MACBETH OF MAIN POINTS THAT HAVE OCCURRED BETWEEN ACTS 1-3. THE CLASS WILL THEN CREATE WANTED POSTERS, OR HIT MAN FOR HIRE ADS, OR CAMPAIGN ADS FOR MACBETH THE KING BY INCORPORATING INFORMATION FROM ACTS 1-3.  DAY FOUR: STUDENTS REVIEW ACT 3, THEN ORALLY READ ACT 4. STUDENTS THEN DIVIDE INTO GROUPS AND REENACT SCENES FROM ACT 4. A SHORT QUIZ WILL BE GIVEN OUT ON ACTS 3 AND 4. THE CLASS DISCUSSES WHAT THEY THINK THE PROPHECIES MEAN. THE CLASS WRITES A JOURNAL ENTRY AS EITHER MACBETH OR LADY MACBETH, ON WHAT THEY THINK THE CHARACTER IS FEELING, AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THEM IN THE END.  DAY FIVE: STUDENTS REVIEW ACT 4, AND PREDICT THE ENDING TO THE PLAY. STUDENTS READ ORALLY ACT 5. STUDENTS BREAK INTO GROUPS AND REENACT THE FINAL SCENES. THE CLASS IS SHOWN CLIPS OF THE MAIN PARTS FROM THE MOVIE MACBETH FROM ACTS 4-5. A SHORT QUIZ IS GIVEN ON ACT 5. STUDENTS DISCUSS THE END OF THE PLAY AND WRITE A 1 PAGE RESPONSE PAPER ON THE PLAY MACBETH. CLASS WATCHES SUMMARY VIDEO.
