19. • “As a business person, you
can and should be a
tremendous force for good.
Business is a noble
calling…creating value for a
host of stakeholders and
helping individuals,
enterprises and communities
grow.”
• – Muhtar Kent
What if the future of business was social…
…and all businesses did good by doing good business?
What if organizations like the one I represent – but not just us – would not only run their core businesses and engage in charitable work, but also creatively develop a third muscle of social enterprise that builds societal value AND business value?
And what if we would all do that together?
Imagine the resources that would be brought to bear and what that would that mean for the billions of people around the world who lack access to basic services that many of us take for granted?
The 800 million who live without access to safe drinking water
The 2.5 Billion who lack access to basic sanitation
The 1.6 Billion who live without electricity
And 2/3 of the worlds population who live without access to information, education because they are not connected.
IMAGINE… how we could improve the physical, emotional, economic and environment well-being of people around the world, who often live in off grid, hard to access communities
IMAGINE… how you could change the lives of people in the community by providing on demand safe drinking water to rural communities who are currently without
IMAGINE if you were to combine that safe water with
Off grid power
Connectivity
Training and development to empower women
Access to improved education
Access to better / more regular healthcare
Well… we did step back and asked ourselves those questions.
That’s when we developed EKOCENTER, a sort of ‘down town in a box’ for the communities I just described.
EKOCENTER is not a silver bullet, but it is an opportunity to start, learn and improve to help solve these challenges through Social Enterprise.
By the end of this year we aim to have almost 30 EKOCENTERs installed in 6 countries.
So, to imagine EKOCENTER,
IMAGINE solar powered self sustaining kiosks…
that provide safe drinking water to communities
And that allow people to connect to the world, to information and – most importantly – to each other.
Imagine these kiosks delivering a suite of products and services to communities. Initially simple services such as charging mobile phones, wifi access, photocopying, but eventually this could easily expand to more advanced services like mobile finance, remote health monitoring or education classes.
What we deliver through each EKOCENTER is completely modular, but all will have water, power and connectivity off the grid.
The community drives what gets delivered.
And all these EKOCENTERs are powered by woman entrepreneurs who will be trained to run their businesses with our support.
As such, they become social enterprise franchisees which we know is a proven success formula.
Take for example our Coletivo project in Brazil, which empowers women to create their own small enterprises. This beautiful lady, Regina Maria Silva Gomes is a single caretaker of 5 grandchildren. But she also is a Coletivo recycling business operator in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her business now economically supports 700+ families. And she is just one example of the over 500.000 women we have helped start their own business around the world as part of our 5by20 women empowerment program. And the story is always the same: the multiplier sin terms of job creation, economic value creation and social inclusion are enormous, especially when women are involved.
Therefore, EKOCENTER will not only bring economic growth to less developed parts of the world. It will also stimulate communities and enable people to drive measurable impact by opening up new pathways for the marginalized and disadvantaged, and helping to unlock their full potential to effect transformational change.
And just as importantly, we believe it can provide a return on investment within 2-3 years which is important for securing investment capital, business interest and empowering more franchisees.
So why do this?
At Coca-Cola,we believe it’s our responsibility – and our privilege – to do our part and help make a positive difference for the consumers and communities we serve. And of course, it also helps us fulfill our mission:
“To refresh the world, inspire moments of optimism and happiness, create value and make a difference.”
Because we know…a business can only be as healthy as the community that it’s in
So community well-being is the starting point of our long term thinking,
Hence the public sustainability commitments we’ve made in water, women and well-being specifically, to help address some of the world’s most pressing problems…
We are committed to replace every drop of water we use by 2020, we are committed to empowering 5 million women in 2020 through our value chain, and we are committed to be part of the solution with regards to improving people’s physical wellbeing wherever we operate.
These priorities are reflected throughout all our strategies and plans
But specifically in EKOCENTER they have an opportunity to make all these commitments come together and be put to collective use for those who need it most.
With these commitments in mind, we believe that sustainable growth truly happens at the intersection of societal value and business growth, where communities needs meet business needs, where we’re able to create shared value.
EKOCENTER enables us to do good by doing good business because it allows us to meet community needs AND business needs.
It’s flexible enough to adapt to individual community needs, but it also delivers against the needs of the business… in terms of building trust and loyalty, more sustainable supply chains, and stronger community ties.
Of course we can’t do this alone
So we’ll need to build partnerships between Civil Society, Governments and Business.
Our Chairman & CEO, Muhtar Kent, calls it the Golden Triangle
…It’s how we all work together help solve society’s challenges, improve people’s lives, and build strong communities. These are partnerships of shared intellect, execution and investment capabilities and of course passion.
We believe that by collaborating and investing together we can do so much more together than we could ever do individually.
We are already working with some great partners like NRG, the Inter-american Development Bank and Technoserve to name a few, and are confident that many more will follow as we further build out the program.
So that together we can help communities thrive.
Our heritage has always linked us to business opportunities that marry with community needs, and the world has many issues we can’t solve, but for those that are solvable – access to safe, power, connectivity, and personal economic stability, we want to partner with those who share this sense of purpose around community well-being, and be a force for good. Both for communities, and for business…”
We have always dared to dream, to reimagine… and that’s invariably where we’ve created the most value and the most meaningful change.
Lastly, I wanted to invite you to come experience EKOCENTER your self. We’re out here on the parking lot and I’ll be there from 1-2 today and tomorrow to answer any questions you may have. Or, you can join us for a breakfast session on EKOCENTER on Thursday morning.
Thank you.
