Editor's Notes
According to Abraham Maslow in his Hierarchy of needs, people are motivated by their individual needs. Some of our basic needs for survival have evolved over thousands of years and must be satisfy before higher order needs such as emotional well being and personal development. Maslow developed his theory to explain what motivates people to do certain things and to behave in certain ways. His theory is guided by the idea that people possess internal resources for growth and healing. He has identified five categories of need that people are motivated to satisfy. Starting with the most basic and working up to the more complex needs. The categories are Physiological needs, Safety needs, Social needs, Esteem needs, and Self-actualizing needs.
Physiological needs - Food, water, air, shelter, warmth, sex, rest, etc. These are basic instinctive survival needs that all other need become secondary if these needs are not met. A modern world example of this could be how a person who is hurting or hungry may not focus on the subject of a business meeting. Safety needs - Security, stability, freedom from fear or threat, protection from elements, order, law, limits, etc. Safety and security needs are also part of survival but is less severe. This may translate to full time employment, heath insurance and safe neighborhoods. Social needs - Friendship, family, affection, acceptance, relationships, interaction with others, etc. The needs for belonging, love and affection are less basic than physiological and safely needs. There are many ways to satisfy these needs such as involvement with families and friends even religious or community group. Esteem needs - self-esteem, accomplishment, mastery, autonomy, status, authority, recognition or respect, etc. These need deal with things that reflect on personal worth and social recognition. Self-Actualization needs - realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth. At this level the individual is concern with personal growth and fulfilling their potential. A self-actualized person may be more concern with a growth and learning opportunity from a career change than the money for example.
Abraham H. Maslow was born in April 1, 1908. He was an American psychologist who is best known for his theory of motivation call Hierarchy of human needs (1943). He is also considered to be the father of humanistic psychology. At the time psychology was only concerned with the abnormal or the mentally ill person. Maslow was interested in positive mental health. He believes that people have the inner resources or motivation to grow and heal from past traumas. His hierarchy of need is arranged with the most basic and powerful need on the bottom and the weaker but more distinctly human needs at the top. Maslow died in June of 1970 due to a heart attack, but his theory had a strong influence on psychology. His hierarchy of need has been adapted and extended by an additional three stages. Many still consider his five stage model to be a good theory.
