“Shane” by Jack Schaefer Essay
In the novel "Shane", by Jack Schaefer, Marian, the wife of Joe and the mother of Bob is initially
played out to be a very simple character. She cooks and cleans and cares for her family. She starts
to develop a more complex character as Shane arrives. You can tell from the beginning that Marian
wants to impress her guest with her cooking and her curiosity of the latest fashions. But as the novel
progresses you begin to see that Marian may want more from Shane than originally shown.
In the beginning of the story, Marian just thinks of Shane as a guest, she cooks and cleans for him
and makes sure he is at home. However, from the start she was drawn to him. He was as she said "
dangerous", and she liked that. Marian liked that Shane was...show more content...
But you can also see that Shane is drawn to Marian as well, and is comfortable with her on many
levels.
As the story goes on, the readers begin to see a love triangle forming. You realize that Marian has
feelings for Shane on page 65 when Bob overhears her talking with Shane. Marian says, "Don't go,
Shane. Joe needs you. More than ever now...it's only fair to say it. I need you too". There are
apparent feelings shown between Marian and Shane, but just the same Marian is still obviously in
love with her husband Joe. You see that Marian loves and supports Shane in almost in the same
way she cares for Joe. For a while, it almost seems that Marian has two husbands because the bond
between her and both men is so strong. The strange thing however, is that Joe knows that Marian
has feelings for Shane. And because Joe knows that she still loves him and does not have any
desire to have a physical relationship with Shane, he is okay with it. You know that Joe knows
that Marian has feelings for Shane is on page 80. Marian is taking care of Shane after the fight in
the bar and is so proud of both Shane and Joe. Joe says to Marian when he is holding her, " Do
you think I don't know Marian? Don't fret yourself; I'm man enough to know a better when his trail
meets mine. Whatever happens will be alright". Even though Joe knows what is going on, his
respect for Shane makes him okay with it.
Marian never has to choose between Joe and Shane and the relationship between Marian

Role of Women in Jane Eyre Essay example
Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre represents the role of women in the Victorian era by giving the reader
an insight into the lives of women from all social classes. Jane Eyre therefore represents figures of
the Victorian time yet the character of Jane Eyre, herself, can be seen as very unconventional for the
Victorian society.
England, in the eighteenth century, was driven by class distinction and wealth. In the lower class
there was always a desperate struggle to survive which contrasted to the life led by the upper class,
socializing with people like themselves. The servant trade, made up by the lower class, allowed the
upper class to live their desired life whilst constantly maintaining superiority based on their position
in society....show more content...
That is a family may wish their children to marry into a wealthy or prestigious family.
It was not a requirement of marriage that the couple love each other and it has been suggested that
love in marriage was usually financially driven or simply a desirable union between two families.
Again this is wear we see Jane as being rare in the fact she married for love, not for money, and that
she obviously married above her station at the time. Her station had improved through her acquired
wealth by the time she returned to marry Mr Rochester.
Often Jane reflects on herself as being unconventional particularly in the way she talks with Mr
Rochester. She refers to the intelligence that she has as being a close match to his but also her
apparent confidence in honestly answering questions which one would usually shy away from.
Jane surprises herself often it would seem, in the ways that she is not conventional and is happy
for it. Having said this, Jane does try, at times top fit the social norm by wanting to be on the
sidelines so to speak when Mr Rochester has friends over to stay. She does not wish to be part of the
group and participate in their games as she is below them in social class and does not want to impose
herself on them as an equal. She is also not a character to publicly discuss her emotions but instead
prefers to suppress them, as she believes a women at this time should. Jane, unlike women of this

Jane Eyre
The way in which society tries to live today goes hand in hand with the quote "What really matters
is on the inside, not the outside", which is often repeated, maybe because people want everyone to
feel equal and no one inferior or maybe because a person just wants to feel better about his or
herself so this statement is said. The story "Jane Eyre" completely contradicts this quote, especially
during the social extravaganza, which was put on by Mr. Rochester and the Thornfield workers. The
main goal during the era in which the book "Jane Eyre" took place was to be wealthy so you could be
a part of all the so called finer things in life such as nice clothing, jewelry, money, large mansions,
and so on. The social...show more content...
In the story "Jane Eyre" the setting as the reader knows renders to be quite a degrading one in a
way. The setting describes all of the elegance which went along with being wealthy like Mr.
Rochester, Louisa Eshton, Mary Ingram, et cetera and the poor hard life which went along with
being born with so called not good blood and therefore a person was started out in life knowing
that he or she would never acquire a life of luxury but a life of hard work and a feeling of
inferiority. During the social get together Jane, Mrs. Fairfax, and many others were at the
Thornfield house for the only reason of making the richer guests happy by waiting on them hand
and foot and performing whatever tasks in which they were told to do such as serving supper and
helping dress the ladies and gentlemen. The guests, Mrs. Eshton, Amy and Louisa Eshton, Lady
Lynn, Mrs. Colonel Dent, Lady Ingram, Blanch and Mary Ingram, Henry and Frederick Lynn,
Colonel Dent, Mr. Eshton, and Lord Ingram were all sat in the nicely cleaned and furnished
dinning room to eat supper and were well provided with the best silverware and china for such
occasions as tea and all meals while the servants would eat in the kitchen or their room.
During the stay of these wealthy people the plot was to seem that Mrs. Ingram and Mr. Rochester
were going to get married but the reader knows that he really loves Jane. Mr. Rochester and Blanch

English 111 Reflection
In my English 111 class, we wrote four essays about various topics. In my portfolio, I will reflect
on my writing in my narrative, literary analysis, compare and contrast, and cause and effect
essays. My narrative essay was an assignment that I struggled picking a topic for and eventually
settled on the story of my first concert. It's a story I have told many times, so I felt passionate
about it; however it was a struggle for me to write my essay through showing and not telling. It
was difficult for me because it is something I don't do naturally when speaking or writing. Writing
a narrative essay was something I had not been formally taught before this year, so it was more of a
challenge than my other essays. I did well focusing on my central...show more content...
I wrote with a lot of excessive phrases that were unnecessary which is something I struggled with
in this essay. I had a tight grip on the theme and idea of the essay, which was my strong point for
this essay. The theme wasn't something I was genuinely passionate about, but I was able to easily
convey passion in my essay through my ability to fully grasp the topic. Through both of my first
two essays, I had slight trouble formatting in MLA which I tried my best doing. In my compare
and contrast essay I was unable to format my heading correctly. While I had similar grades in my
first two essays, my third essay I got a better grade. I felt passionate about this essay because I
fully understood this topic out of the other options and I had done research about the topic prior
to the class. Again I feel my strength would be writing about the theme, while my weakness
would be grammar and mechanics. I followed the dominate theme most strongly and got my
highest grade in my cause and effect essay. I think the greatest challenge of this essay was to
figure out what I wanted to put in my abstract section. I have a great strength in researching about
topics and finding reliable, scholarly sources, especially for topics of a scientific nature. While it
wasn't something I did bad on, a weakness I had for this essay was clear articulation of my

The Importance Of Writing
Language is an essential thing in someone's daily life. Whether it is written or spoken it is our
main way of communication with one another because of this someone is taught how to write and
speak properly. Speaking is easier than writing because it is something someone has been doing
since they were child. This is different for writing. A person is taught how to write when he or she
goes to school and improves over time. I started writing papers after I came to the United States in
2014. I have improved on my writing skills since then. English 101 has helped me to write as a
college level student. I am now able to organize essays and be able to write them in well structured
way.
English is defiantly not my favorite class at all,...show more content...
In class we talked about editorials regarding the Colin Kaepernick's situation. The second essay
was comparing two editorials and writing about the differences and the similarities between them. I
wrote the summary for the two editorials and few bullet points about the differences and the
similarities as part of the organization. However, I did not organize the ideas in an outline, which
made the writing a bit difficult. The second essay had a better flow and structure than the first one,
but still needed a lot of work. Some of the problems were repetition of ideas. If the ideas were put
on the outline these reputations could have been resolved. The second essay grade was better than
the first one, which is an indication for improvement.
As the semester went on, my writing skill was way enhanced significantly. For the last essay I
was supposed to do my opinion and two other editorials on Colin Kaepernick sitting for the singing
of the national anthem. Before writing the essay, I did an outline for my presentation explaining
whether Colin Kaepernick's action were patriotism or not and who are patriots. I used the outline
that I did for the presentation and it was so much helpful. As I was writing the essay the I had no
trouble making the sentences flow or making a transition. The better the organization I had the
better essay. My grade on the third essay was the highest one of all of them. The grades reflect
