3. INTRODUCTION OF RO PURIFICATION
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification
process that uses a Partially Membrane to
separate ions, unwanted molecules and larger
particles from drinking water.
Reverse osmosis differs from filtration in that the
mechanism of fluid flow is by osmosis across a
membrane
In the normal osmosis process, the solvent
naturally moves from an area of low solute
concentration (high water potential), through a
membrane, to an area of high solute concentration
(low water potential).
5. PROCESS OF RO WATER PURIFICATION
In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to
overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative
property that is driven by chemical
potential differences of the solvent,
a thermodynamic parameter.
The result is that the solute is retained on the
pressurized side of the membrane and the
pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side.

Solar Ro initially is most cost-effective for small-scale
system where other technologies are less competitive
In RO Filtration process salty water is presssurized to
flow through a membrane, causing a separation of
the saline solution from the solute.Which required
major energy.
So Solar reverse osmosis system are a new concept
in Indian Water Purification Industry.
In such water purification system, solar energy is
utilized to power RO system, which furthermore

This Solar RO is very cost effective i.e it’s operating
cost is low but Fixed cost i.e plant cost is high.
In Overall way it is Cost efficient.
9. ZERO DISCHARGE WATER STRATEGY
Zero Liquid Discharge(ZLD) is an engineering approach
to water treatment where all water is recovered and
contaminants are reduced to solid waste.
While many water treatment processes attempt to
maximize recovery of freshwater and minimize waste,
ZLD is the most demanding target since the cost and
challenges of recovery increase as the wastewater gets
more concentrated.
Salinity, scaling compounds, and organics all increase in
concentration, which adds cost associated with
managing these increases.
ZLD is achieved by stringing together water treatment
technology that can treat wastewater as the
contaminants are concentrated.
10. ZLD SYSTEM
It indicates there is no liquid discharge since the
effluent is effectively treated, recycled and reused.
Zero Liquid discharge is generally accomplished by
concentrating the wastewater utilizing numerous
technologies together with membrane based and
multi effect evaporation-based system
ZLD comprises of :-
1. Eliminating of wastewater effluent steam from the
industry.
2. Recycling of treated water.
11. ZLD TECHNOLOGY
Main aim of ZLD is to recover useful products and
salts form rejects, apart from recovery of maximum
water for recycle.

Due to high cost there is strong motivation to
employ more saving process to minimize the
MVC/Crystalliztion share.[Compare with cost of
desalination technologies: RO<<ED<<Thermal]
1. Reverse Osmosis(RO) – rejects salt, passes
water, 2-4 kWh/m3
2. Natural Evporation – slow, large footprints
Another possible motivation is presence of
organics, volatiles, colloids etc., which complicates
the treatment and water reuse

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
Solar RO System consist of power generation unit
and desalination unit.
Electricity needed by the system will be supplied by
the Solar PV array, since the RO unit needs a stable
power supply and batteries will be connected for
supplying stable power.
The energy produced by the PV is stored in battery
Bank.
The Stored energy is used for powering the loads

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
o RO desalination process consists of high
pressure pump, membrane unit and pressure
control valve at the brine side
o The valve at the brine side is used to control the
amount of discharged brine and to control the
system pressure.
