Essay on National Disaster Medical System
Citizens of the United States face catastrophic disaster such as hurricane, tornadoes, hazmat spills and flooding. Emergency management situations
varies. Managers have to put into consideration the type of disasters or the response of citizens. A great example, the hurricane in Tuscaloosa, AL
required large amounts of medical and debris assistance from teams to help return the destructed site back to prior condition. National Disaster
Medical Systems would be one of the first to respond if there is a tragic event like in Tuscaloosa, AL. Threw research, I hope to cover the history,
objectives, goals, and support towards National Disaster Medical System. National Disaster Medical System is a federally coordinated system that ...

National Disaster Medical System has nearly 9,800 individuals working rigorously towards the success of emergency medical response, 8,000 of the
9,800 individuals are volunteers, while 1,800 are medically proficient civilians. Volunteers help many victims by providing food, lodging, and clothing.
NDMS responding teams help prevent further casualties in the event of an emergency. In addition, NDMS is not an emergent organization, but NDMS
does help disseminate information to those who seek it, provide solutions for protection and plans for organizing the people who show up to help after
the disaster. The NDMS is an interagency partnership between the Department of Health and Human Service (HHS), the Department of Homeland
Security (HS), the Department of Defense (DOD), and the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) and is based on the 2005 Memorandum of Agreement
(MOA)between these agencies (ndms.fhpr.osd.mil).
The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) has been serving as a federal system that depicts the Nation's medical response capability. NDMS
has been known as an emergent organization since 1984. The formation of NDMS was formed due to executive order, by the fortieth President
Ronald Regan. In addition, NDMS serves as part of the Public Health Service in HHS as a public–private healthcare institutions; its purpose was to
provide medical evacuation and definite care in the U.S.

Earthquake Problems
The Earthquake struck the country at 4:53 p.m, it was a time that many people were out and about, at school, at work or just outside doing things. It
was pure chaos from the moment it struck the overly populated city. There were very few rescues that first evening of the earthquake, and as night
fell, residents found themselves in a world of darkness and grief" (Petrou). One of the larger problems with the earthquake was that it destroyed much
of it's government offices and the capital city of Port–au–Prince, many of the resources that would have helped rescue people and revive the city were
destroyed. Port–au–Prince had a population of 2 million people at the time, that's almost a fourth of the countries population, but the capitals
infrastructure is layed out to support just over 115,000. So on top of the overpopulation in the area, you have a massive catastrophe and a whole lot of
people with nowhere to go, especially with all of the rubble. There wasn't much of anything that residents could do, other than to help each other.
Fredson Demostherma, a resident of Leogane said "Haiti's future is in the hands of other nations, and God,"(Petrou). Fredson was with his family in
his home when the tragedy struck, he jumped out of his second floor window, only to see the the rest of his family get trapped among the rubble.
That was the scene for many residents, seeing their loved ones die instantly or not being able to help, or have someone to call. There were no
resources to go

Morality vs. Truth: The Dilemma Media Outlets Face We are surrounded by news. Because of the amount of technology readily available at our
fingertips, news is everywhere. It is no longer predominately supplied to the public through newspapers or radios at scheduled times. Instead, news
is accessible nearly anywhere at any time. With just a click of a button, news can be accessed from your phone, tablet, or laptop in no time at all.
Through different news sites, or even on different social medias, you can find local, national, and international news. Stories can range anywhere from
pop culture to more serious topics like tragedies. Some of those news stories create an ethical dilemma, especially when they involve death. Though
news stories and their images are meant to be informational, their content can sometimes be unsettling for readers. The use of certain diction and the
connotation that word choice creates can offend some people while not even phasing others. The two articles "Face to Face with Tragedy" and
"Disturbing Media Images of Haiti Earthquake Aftermath Tell Only Part of the Story" portray positive and negative views on a particular international
event covered by multiple news sources. Both articles explore how the media shares information and the different ways readers interpret it. The authors
suggest ethical dilemmas faced by news media. When documenting

Haiti Earthquake Research Paper
The 2010 Haiti Earthquake was a large–scale earthquake that occurred January 12, 2010, on the West Indian island of Hispaniola, comprising the
countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Most severely affected was Haiti, occupying the western third of the island. An exact death toll
proved elusive in the ensuing chaos. The official Haitian government count was more than 300,000, but other estimates were considerably smaller.
Hundreds of thousands of survivors were displaced. So much was destroyed in such little time the survivors had no clue what to do and many of
them were just in shock. One survivor said "It was God who was tucking me away in his arms. It gave me strength." Another survivor said "I felt the
house dancing around me," he

Haiti Surviving after the Earthquake
The effects caused by the earthquakes are devastating. It causes losses of human life and has effects on the infrastructure and economy. Earthquakes
can happen at any time anywhere. In January 12, 2010 an earthquake of a magnitude of 7.0 hit the nation of Haiti. An estimation of 316,000 people
was killed and more than 1.3 million of Haitians were left homeless (Earthquake Information for 2010). Haiti was lead in a terrified chaos. After the
earthquake, families were separated because many of the members were killed. The homes, schools, and hospitals were demolished. People loss their
most value belongings. It would take time to the country to recover from this terrible disaster. The long terms are environmental, health, and economic
issues that effect in the beautiful island of Haiti.
Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Americas. Agriculture is one of the incomes of the population. However, everything changes after the
2010 earthquake. The losses caused by the quake were approximately in $8 billons and $14 billons. Joblessness and the lack of food, and clean water
further affect the economy because people chose to immigrate to other places for work such as Dominican Republic (Haiti earthquake). Furthermore,
"Haiti was a Republic of non–governmental organization to become a Republic of unemployment," and in order to accomplish an economical growth
Haiti needs the investment of companies that can invest in the country to help many of the people to have a job.

What is an earthquake?
An earthquake would be classified as a sudden ferocious shaking of the ground, typically causing great obliteration because of manoeuvre within the
earth's crust or volcanic action.
What is a landslide?
A landslide would be tabulated as a disintegrate mass of earth or rock to configurate a mountain, cliff or a summit.

What Was The Causes Of Haiti Earthquake
The earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010 caused 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings to collapse or be damaged. The earthquake also
killed 100,000 to 160,000 people. However, this earthquake was only a 7.0 on the moment magnitude scale. So why was there such severe damage in
Haiti? The damage was especially severe because of the tectonic setting and energy levels, and because of Haiti's poor economic state. In this essay,
we will explore each factor of damage in depth then see how they connect in order to fully understand why this damage occurred. The first damage
factor we will delve into is the tectonic setting and energy levels of Haiti. In my drawing, you can see that the Caribbean plate (where Haiti is
located) is in the middle of four larger tectonic plates (North American plate, Nazca plate, Cocos plate and the South American plate). Haiti is located
in the northeast of the Caribbean plate on the border of the North American plate. This is a transform boundary and it also has two major strike–slip
faults. The North American plate is moving westward at a rate of 2.3 cm per year and the Caribbean plate is moving eastward at less than one
centimeter per year. This movement causes pressure to build up forming fault lines. There are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Kleist And The Birth Of The Earthquake Analysis
Fortunate and merciful; yet brutal and poignant. Heinrich von Kleist's The Earthquake in Chile (1807) was indeed a story of love, but also
contained a definite twist of ferociousness. In Isak Winkel Holm's "Earthquake in Haiti: Kleist and the Birth of Modern Disaster Discourse," Holm
portrays two different interpretations of Kleist's story. He believes that the earthquake could mean the beginning of a siege of disaster or a merciful
act for Josefa and Jeronimo's love. The two analyses are different and yet they equally correspond to each other's ideas. Thus, it is fair to say that the
deconstruction led by the earthquake was an introduction to the catastrophe that will come in the near future and also the period where Josefa and
Jeronimo could... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the survivors of the earthquake began to help one another to survive, it seemed as if all of the troubles and hardships were left behind. The people
of Santiago begin to take Jeronimo and Josefa as their own, and simply do not bring up their guilt and therefore treat them equally. As they all quickly
adapt to their newly–formed surroundings, peace overcomes them even in the tragically deformed enclosure they face. The destruction of the
earthquake is quickly forgotten, but is awakened when they enter the church and the people are reminded of the accusations towards the young couple.
This is where it seems that the peace and the happy memories the couple shared are taken away and they meet the fate that was omitted in the

Life Is A Of Life
Life is something that requires a considerable amount of physical and mental effort. Some are fortunate enough to have everything prepared for
them. Such as some are born into money; some come across good fortune yet most work hard from the start to get somewhere in the world. It just
all depends on how you were brought into this world. For some people, life is full of stress and hardships. That's how life was for someone very dear
to me Kimberly Domonique. She had it difficult from the start however, she chose not to let life get her down. When life gave her lemons, she made
lemonade.

She moved to New Jersey to get away from the violence and that's when she started high school. When she got to high school at the age of fourteen
years old, that is when she met other students of Haitian descent. She thought she moved away from the discrimination but she actually ran head onto
it. In school the Haitians and the black Americans were separated voluntarily because of the same issues that occurred in Queens. The difference was
that there were more Haitians in New Jersey and they stood together to defend each other. Meanwhile during the drama, she found her high school
sweetheart which became her husband of twenty five years. Throughout the years of their relationship they went through several changes and
hardships, they were blessed with three amazing kids who reside in the USA today.
Life in Haiti was not a walk in the park for Kimberly. Now, school is extremely difficult and back then the competition for scholarships was at an
all–time high. Not many people were wealthy. Most could barely afford to pay for school and only a small amount was considered well off.
Placing monetary value on an individual's life is measured not by the way an individual has lived, but rather the individual's income; at least that is
how society views life. Every individual values life from a different perspective. And while every human will find value in life, those values will not be
the same as everybody else. Some people will value life as a privilege and believe life

Disenfranchisement in Haiti Essay
Often time disenfranchisement is shown in various places throughout the world. Although saddening, people face tragedies that cause them to lose
things most important to them every day. For example, when the earthquake in Haiti struck, the people of Haiti lost everything they considered
valuable. Having faced many obstacles, Haitian people dealt with the disenfranchisement of their pride and their possessions; there are endless amounts
of literature that reference to the tragedies that occurred in Haiti and how these mishaps have affected the life that they are having to live.

The earthquake of 2010 altered the way the people of Haiti looked at everyday life, as well as, it caused them to be deprived of all hope on creating
a new beginning. On Tuesday January 12, 2010, the Haitian society knew that their world would never be the same. Having killed over 300,000 people
and wounded more than 200,000 people, the magnitude 7.0 earthquake was demoralizing to the Haitians ("The 2010 Haiti Earthquake"). To make
matters worse, following the magnitude 7.0 earthquake there were twelve aftershocks containing a magnitude larger than 5.0 ("Earthquake in Haiti").
The outcome of the earthquake was devastating to the extent that the minority of people who survived stood on the remains of their churches, grocery
stores, and even their own homes. Corporations like Merlin USA and others around the globe are contributing in various ways to help try to rebuild
Haiti's nation. Working to repair Haiti's demolished society, Merlin tries to bring appropriate health care to all susceptible associations in Haiti
("Haiti"). Strongly, Merlin continues to put in a great effort and they have tended to around 47,986 patients merely in Port–au–Prince ("Haiti").
Sorrowfully, people are constantly dying from Cholera in Haiti; nevertheless, it seems to them that nothing the world can offer will be able to cure the
adversity they have encountered. The disenfranchisement in Haiti is beyond the grasp of many people

Cause And Effects Of The Haiti Earthquake
On January 12th, 2010, the small country of Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated the city of Port–au–Prince and surrounding
areas (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). The 30–second disaster was just the beginning of a collection of aftershocks that then struck the country
relentlessly for days (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). Many areas were reduced to rubble leaving approximately one million Haitians homeless and 350
000 dead and another 300 000 injured (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). The ill–prepared country was sitting on two tectonic plates– the Caribbean and
the North American, where there was slippage resulting in the earthquake (KS3 Bitesize Geography). Following the environmental catastrophe, the
international community responded, and a relief effort began (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). Though the earthquake happened quickly, the lasting
impact and trauma remained. In an article from the Wall Street Journal, Luhnow and Dugan stated that following the event many people went
searching for psychological support and aid instead of physical (2010). After having buildings tumble and fall onto people, many suffered from PTSD
and survivors guilt; children were the most emotionally traumatized, and there was a fundamental lack of aid for facing psychological traumas endured
by so many (Luhnow & Dugan, 2010). As a society, an increase in crime and violence is on the rise; Haitians had no defined structure in communities,
and most established norms

A Comparison and Contrast of Earthquake in Haiti and Chile...
Introduction There are about 15 tectonic or lithospheric plates on the earth's surface, which have different size and move relative to one another over
the earth's surface. As a result, the crust around the boundaries of the plates bends or deforms, accumulating strong energy during these processes
(Briggs, 2006). When the strain becomes too great to bear by the crust in the future, the crust will snap or slip causing earthquakes. As a type of
geophysical hazard, earthquakes are inevitable for mankind living on the Earth, which destroy tremendous buildings, and take human life away.
However, influences of earthquakes can be reduced if people take appropriate actions. This report provide an overview of two earthquakes that

Earthquakes are inherently unpredictable. Even though many reports are published to illustrate the relationships between earthquakes and other things,

Sarkar, Choudhary, Sonakia, Vishwakarma, and Gwal (2012) indicates that electron density and temperature variation in the ionosphere might be
precursors of earthquakes; they have some interesting founds about these two things during the Haitian earthquake. "There are several sensors onboard
DEMETER (Detection of Electromagnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions) to survey the ionosphere. The electron density and
temperature variation are studied using the Langmuir Probe Instrument (ISL)" (Sarkar et al., 2009, p.634). Based on the data from DEMETER and

The Disaster Of The Haiti Earthquake : 2010 Disaster
Haiti Earthquake: 2010 Disaster The Haiti Earthquake was a major catastrophic event that shook the ground for around 35 seconds which registered 7.0
magnitude on the Richter Scale on January 12, 2010, at around 4:53 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The earthquake hit The Republic of Haiti with the
epicenter near the capital of Haiti– Port–au–Prince region ("The Devastating Haiti Earthquake: Questions and Answers"). The region includes the cities
of Carrefour, Petion–Ville, Delmas, Tabarre, Cite Soleil, and Kenscoff, which were severely affected by the quake. However, the city of Leogane,
which was the city closest to the epicenter, took the brunt of the force damaging and destroying 80%–90% of structures in the area. The earthquake led
to more than 316,000 people dead or missing, 300,000 wounded, and over 1.3 million displaced from their homes and the majority of the people
devastated (DesRoches, et al.).
Let us take a look at how this earthquake in Haiti occurred. Earthquakes happen on the Earth's lithosphere, which is the outer layer of the Earth. There
are three types of plate boundaries: extensional (divergent), compressional (convergent), and transform (J. Louie et al.). In a transform boundary, which
is more relevant to the topic at hand, two massive plates called plate tectonics lock up against each other laterally preventing further movement and
eventually building up pressure on themselves. This pressure buildup stores potential energy which ultimately translates into kinetic energy when the
rocks can no longer hold onto the amount of pressure that builds up causing the two plates to horizontally move or slide abruptly, which is what we
know as an 'Earthquake' (Tom Harris et al.). Earthquakes can also happen along fault lines, which are cracks that develop from the movement of the
tectonic plates. Similarly, as with the plate tectonics, there are three types of faults: normal faults– up and down slippage of rocks or plates–, reverse
faults– when a plate goes under another as a result of pushing against each other– and finally, the strike–slip faults– when two plates slip past each other
laterally. They are usually found near the edges of the plates– such as the San Andreas Fault in California which

How Did The 2010 Chile Earthquake Affect Chile's Economy?
The 2010 Chile earthquake, 2010 Haiti earthquake, and 2015 Nepal earthquake each had varying impacts upon each country's economy, society, and
culture.
Haiti and Nepal's economics were both very different from Chili's economy post earthquake. Although Chile experienced economic loss, due to the
destruction of infrastructure, fishing boats/ports, and vineyards they did not need to worry about money. Chile was one of the wealthiest countries in
South America and had money reserved for emergencies. Having money set aside meant that when disaster struck the Chilean economy only went
down for a few months and the economy still grew the rest of the year. Chile could use its own money to start rebuilding right away and did not

As mentioned earlier Chile had money set aside to deal with disasters, this was a part of Chile's culture of preparedness. Chile had dealt with
earthquakes before the 2010 one and had a non–corrupt government who fostered this culture of preparedness both within their government and
among the Chilean people through making sure all buildings were up to code, educating people on what to do in case of an earthquake, and having
funding for disaster relief efforts available. This preparation paid off for Chile when they experienced far less death than typically expected for a
earthquake the size of their 2010 quake. Haiti and Nepal were both quite the opposite, with literally zero culture of preparedness being fostered by their
respective governments. The governments in both nations were quite corrupt, doing little to make sure building codes were enforced and people
educated on earthquakes. This showed when after each of their quakes both Nepal and Haiti had extremely high body counts in comparison to the size
of the earthquakes that had

The Haiti earthquake and health care Health care can bring people together when there is equal access, or divide people when there is not. On January
12, 2010, Haiti was hit by an magnitude–7.0 earthquake. More than half a million people dies or was injured, and approximately 2 million people were
displayed from their homes. Overcrowded and poor living conditions increased Haitians risk for communicable diseases. The earthquake destroyed
most government buildings, schools, homes, hospitals, and transportation and communication infrastructure in the western part of the country,
including the capital Port–au–Prince and much of the southeastern part of the country. This earthquake that struck Haiti caused an estimated 222,570
deaths and 300,000 injuries. In impoverished countries, like Haiti analyzing the causes of deaths and injuries post–disaster can help countries better

Haiti Earthquake
Have you ever heard of an earthquake so big that hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives, more than three hundred thousand people were
injured, and 1.5 million people became homeless? If not, let me introduce you to the Haiti Earthquake. This enormous earthquake destroyed many lives.
It was believed to have been caused by the shifting of tectonic plates in the Earth. But, is this the truth?
In 2010, an earthquake broke out in Haiti. The city was left in ruins, 1.5 million people lost their homes, and hundreds of thousands of people were
either killed or injured. Scientists claim that the cause of this earthquake was because of slippage along the conservative plate boundary that runs

But, "conspiracy theorists think HAARP's purpose is far more sinister than meets the eye," says Stephanie Pappas, reporter for NBC news. HAARP
is believed to use their resources for weather warfare, which also plays into the role of the thought of HAARP causing the earthquake in Haiti. Some
reasoning that causes this theory is as follows: Just a few hundred miles away from Haiti is a HAARP array; The earthquake did not occur on a big
fault line. This earthquake happened quite farther south of the North American plate and Caribbean plate. It is rare that a quake is to occur here, which
makes room for conspiracies that HAARP caused it. These are just two of the many reasons that stem from HAARP's involvement with the Haiti
Earthquake.
So how did HAARP cause the earthquake? HAARP has heaters in the Ionosphere. From these heaters comes ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) waves.
These waves are powerful enough, at the right frequency, to cause vibrations in the Earth, which can lead to an earthquake. One reason as to why
HAARP would want to cause an earthquake is because of the idea that Haiti is an unguarded, unwanted, low–protection country that could make a good
place to test an earthquake. It also seems odd that, since this earthquake was deep in Earth's surface, it only affected

2010 Chile Earthquake Case Study
Earthquake Case History:
2010 Mw = 8.8 Mega–thrust Earthquake, Maule, Chile
5/2/13
By Travis Eddy
1. Introduction
In early 2010 central south Chile experienced a Mw = 8.8 earthquake and large tsunami waves that devastated areas on the Chilean Pacific coast, nearby
offshore islands, and areas near the epicenter. In addition to the tsunami, theearthquake had many other geological consequences including aftershocks,
terrestrial and submarine land–sliding, elevation changes, and a gravity shift. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze the earthquake, its
consequences, the resulting damages, and mitigation.
2. Geologic Setting

The most severe impacts were observed on the Chilean coastline adjacent to the epicenter from San Antonio – Tirua, and 670 km offshore on the Juan
Fernandez Archipelago (Synolakis, 2011; Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011). The tsunami hit many areas close to the epicenter within 30 minutes of the
main event, however due to bathymetry and coastline shape, tsunami directions, impacts, and arrival times vary. (Synolakis, 2011; Yamazaki and
Cheung, 2011). For example, Talcahuano Harbor located in The Bay of Concepcion 100 kilometers south of the epicenter experienced an impact from a
resonated 129 minute period oscillating wave three hours after the main event (Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011). Resonance such as this occurred in
various areas along the Chilean coastline, and was caused by standing and partial standing wave systems produced along the coast due to wave
reflection between the continental shelf and the headlands, resulting in radiated tsunami energy to become trapped over the continental margin
(Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011).
6. Land sliding
The main event caused both terrestrial and submarine land sliding to occur in the area. Around 30 slides were delineated, with a majority of them
being submarine (Volker, et.al., 2011). These submarine slides were confined to the walls of various submarine canyons, and were characterized as thin
transitional slides retrograding into open slopes adjacent to the canyons (Volker, et.al., 2011).

Causes Of Haiti Earthquake
Despite the fact that the 2010 Haiti Earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0, it caused 316000 deaths, destroyed over 105000 buildings and left the whole
country in rubble. Human contribution contributed greatly to the casualties and the severity of the earthquake.
A social factor that influenced the severity of the earthquake was where people chose to live. Haiti is located on fault lines, where the epicentre of the
earthquake is and where the earthquake is most severe. The earthquake's epicentre was estimated to be around a mere 25 km away from the
Port–au–prince, the capital of Haiti and home to Вј of the population. The closer the area was to the epicentre, the more intense the earthquake was and
the greater the destruction. The area was also urbanised with many buildings, due to the great number of people who resided there which meant that
many buildings were destroyed and many people were killed.
Poverty was an economic factor that greatly influenced how the earthquake affected the population. In Haiti, 80% of the population was under the
poverty line. в…” of Labor force employees relied on agriculture and due to high unemployment levels, many did not have a job and the population
owned an average of under $2 a day. During the earthquake, Haiti's agricultural industries were destroyed, leaving most of the county unemployed and
unable to produce its main exports. This further exacerbated the problem of poverty and left the population without resources, food and water.

Haitian Health Care : A Follow Up
According to the article Haitian Health Care: A Follow–up (2011) it noted that, in January 2010, 46% of Haitians did not have access to health care,
because they could not afford it or because there was no health center near them" (Haitian Health Care: A Follow–up 2011, np.) I personally believe
that regardless of ones' economic or social status; people should have access to sufficient healthcare. When a person can go to the hospital or any
other facility where they can receive medical treatment, the only humane thing to do is to help that person. Dr. Paul Farmer, also believes that
healthcare should be accessible to people from all walks of life; especially in those areas where medical care and treatment is scarce. Dr. Farmer's

Dr. Farmer noted in the Mountains beyond Mountains book (2003) written by Tracey Kidder, that Haiti has increased rates of infant mortality,
tuberculosis, malnutrition, HIV and AIDS. In an article published by Sophie Arie; titled What's next for Haiti's healthcare? (2011) notes that, "Haiti has
the highest rates of infant, under–five and maternal mortality in the Western hemisphere. Diarrhea, respiratory infections, malaria, tuberculosis and
HIV/AIDS are the leading causes of death" (Arie 2011, 340). As with every decision that a person makes; the pros and cons must be thoroughly
examined; especially when charitable contributions of money are involved. Two pros to inspect, as it relates to making a donation to Dr. Farmer's
charitable enterprises, would be the fact that your charitable donations has the potential to stop the spread of infectious diseases to the states or other
countries; especially after natural disasters wreak havoc on the already struggling countries. When people hear about the turmoil going on in other
countries; it pulls at our heartstrings, and without always thinking rationally, we send over monetary donations to charitable organizations by the
truckloads. In some cases red flags go up; often when it's too late. One con, which could resort from donating to Dr. Farmer's charity enterprises
would be if the funds are being properly used to help with achieving the mission of the organization. Natural Disasters, mixed in with a lack of

The local ecosystem affected / at risk by the 2010 Haiti Earthquake:
–Natural Water Sources: Became contaminated (e.g. To date, over 470,000 people have Cholera in Haiti from contaminated water, 6,631of the cases
resulted in death).
–Agricultural Industry: Displacement of soil (e.g. nutrient–rich topsoil became displaced, soil became dry and infertile; it became difficult for the
people to re–grow back their crops and produce after the earthquake).
–Forests: Destruction of Forest Covers (Haiti lost 98% of its forest cover after the Earthquake in 2010).

Summary of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake:
The crust of the Earth is broken into pieces, called tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are constantly moving, the continents are part of these plates and are
also moving. The cause of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake were the movements of the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates.
The 2010 Haiti Earthquake hit about 24 kilometres from it's capital, Port–au–Prince. The earthquake measured 7.0 in magnitude (on the Richter Scale)
and is estimated to be responsible for 50,000 to 100,000 deaths. 80% to 100% of structures in some places/areas of Haiti were destroyed.
As the earth 'quakes', the ground can split; with both the vibrations of the surface and the cracks in the ground, structures can collapse; and often on top
of people.
The sea levels in the area increased, some parts of land were sinking below the sea and the number of forests found in the country decreased. In 1923,
60% of the country was forest, now forest only covers around 2% of Haiti, as a result of the 2010

Essay On Haiti Earthquake
Haiti has traditionally been the poorest country in the Western hemisphere and has repeatedly been a victim of natural disasters such as hurricanes,
torrential rains, floods and earthquakes. Several natural disasters have plagued the country, destroying everything, and affecting everyone's health,
specifically women's and children's. These uncontrolled and unexpected events such as Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Ike have caused spikes in
health issues such as cholera, AIDS, unwanted pregnancies and children who lack proper care. On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit
Haiti originating from a point 25 miles away from the capital of Port–au–Prince. Photographic evidence and first hand reports made it immediately
evident that there was massive physical damage and that the loss of life would be high. Food and water made its way slowly and insufпЃciently to
the survivors; rescue and medical workers could not save all the trapped and wounded (Petersen). However, some of the greatest problems occurred
weeks, months or even years later. Haiti has tried to abide by the Child Rights Convention's Article Six that states that every child has an inherent right
to life, but it has been difficult. An examination of the effects of the earthquake and the resulting problems focusing on healthcare such as women's
safety and reproductive care, the spread of diseases, the impact of poverty and the decline in the mental and physical stability of the youth,
demonstrates the negative impacts the disaster had, especially on the country's children.
The 2010 earthquake left Haiti's people in shock and confusion, causing the women many issues with both their safety and reproductive health. In the
aftermath of a disaster, women and girls are extremely vulnerable to sexual coercion and violence. In Haiti the breakdown of law and order, and the
growing civil unrest, placed women and girls at a significantly increased risk (Claeys). After the the quake, women had a lot of trouble finding or
affording contraceptives and as a result, some women could not use protection regularly or discontinued using contraception altogether (Balsari). This
opened a door to a huge number of issues, one being that an unprotected women is more

Earthquake's Impact on the People of Haiti
On January 12th, 2010, the small Caribbean nation of Haiti was struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. This was the worst earthquake to hit the region
in over two centuries (BBC News). More than fifty aftershocks measuring over 4.5 followed within the next two weeks. The earthquakes left Haiti in
shambles and exacerbated their conditions. There were 3.5 million people affected and over 220 thousand killed (Disasters Emergency Committee).
Major damage was caused at the Haitian capital, Port–au–Prince. The country was manifestly unprepared for this event and Haiti was propelled into a
downward spiral. The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a devastating event which furthered the country's social, economic, and political instability.

However, by purchasing imported food instead of locally–grown food, the prosperity of local farmers becomes undermined. This highlights Haiti's lack
of self–sufficiency as a country. Haiti has become extremely reliant on other countries for it to barely scrape by. In response to the horrific
earthquake, the world rallied together and pledged over $4.5 billion in aid to help alleviate Haiti's troubles. Of the pledged aid, $2.3 billion has
already been disbursed (Washington Post). Yet, years after the incident, the country is still struggling to recover. The money is crucial for restoration,
but it does not create opportunities for the people. The unemployment rate before the earthquake was at a staggering 70 percent (Global Post). Instead
of empowering locals, projects have been created to provide instant, quantifiable results. As the country becomes more reliant on foreign aid, their
development as a nation is hindered. This, in turn, continues the vicious cycle of unsustainability. To quote a Chinese proverb, "Give a man a fish and
you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." International aid would also have been more beneficial if the Haitian
government had an honourable reputation.
The earthquake unveiled the Haitian government's underlying problems. In addition to having a long history of poverty, Haiti was also infamous
famous for political corruption. In

The very nature of the shadow economy poses an issue to its measurement. Because it is defined as the economic activity that occurs outside the
regulations and is hidden from the authorities, it is especially difficult to detect and measure. The size and the approach to measure the underground

Risk And Politics Of Disaster Coverage
Analysis of "Risk and Politics of Disaster Coverage in Haiti and Katrina"
Introduction and Purpose of the Study The article, "Risk and Politics of Disaster Coverage in Haiti and Katrina," by Jennifer Petersen of the
University of Virginia, which appeared in the journal Communication, Culture & Critique in 2014, provides a comparison and contrast of the media
coverage of Hurricane Katrina (2005), which devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast and was the costliest natural disaster in the nation's history, and the Jan. 12,
2010 earthquake in Haiti, which devastated one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. The purpose of the article is to discuss the reasons
why the news media framed Hurricane Katrina as an unmitigated and unimaginable catastrophe that violated expected norms, while the 2010 Haiti
earthquake was framed as an almost routine and manageable crisis, despite the fact that the Haiti earthquake caused much more loss of life and human
suffering than Katrina. This purpose is discussed in both the short, nine–line abstract, and the introduction.
Literature Review and Research Questions Petersen cites more than 50 sources as references for her study. Many of these sources are the news
programs on NBC and CNN, which she compared when reviewing the coverage of each disaster. However, the reference list also includes a fair
number of other scholarly journal articles and publications by reputable academic publishers. The author provides the

Life is something that requires a lot of physical and mental exertion. Some are sufficiently lucky to have everything arranged for them. For

It simply all relies on upon how you were brought into this world. For a few individuals, life is brimming with anxiety and hardships. That is the way
life was for somebody dear to me Kimberly Domonique. She had it troublesome from the beginning however, she picked not to give life a chance to

Kimberly is from the island of Haiti, she moved to the states at the age of ten years old. She lived in Queens, New York with her step mother, she

her background. She moved out of Queens because of the violence that was occurring between black Americans and foreigners. The problem was that
the foreigners used their methods of learning from their country and used it to their advantage because education was not free for them like it is here
in the states. So this allowed them to get good grades and advance well, which made the black

On 12 January 2010 Haiti's capital city, Port–au–Prince, was rocked by a 7.0 earthquake. Being that it is an island with minimal internal support, they
have to rely on external sources in the world for help and rebuilding their own infrastructure. While there are numerous governmental and

equipment the U.S Army had available and how they employed these assets to help the Haitian's. G Company, 407 Brigade Support Battalion was
the Forward Support Company (FSC) called to the task of humanitarian aid for the Haitian people. At any time, the FSC usually had around 14

was transportation of goods and services from transport aircraft of boats to provide assistance for feeding the local populace and rebuilding the
crippled infrastructure. The FSC did not have its own ambulance or hospital teams so the vehicles were also used to transport Haitian's to the hospital in

which causes many strike slip fault earthquakes as it slides part the Caribian plate as well as the North American plate.
The epicenter of this earthquake was relatively shallow at 13km, which caused there to be more traumatic shaking. It was given a 9 on the Mercalli
scale for the destructive shaking. Nearly two weeks after this event, a Tsunami hit a little town called Petit Paradis stated to be a result of the Haiti

that Haiti's government has provided was not sufficient enough. Hou and Shi (2011) argued that the state of emergency was not proclaimed until

people to rely on outside help and that takes extra time. The damage to the presidential house was extremely significant, as Hou and Shi

disasters of extreme magnitude. These usually naturally occurring phenomenon have been responsible from wiping out entire towns throughout history

kind and when a third world country is involved, the result is usually exponentially worse than in a developed country. In the past decades Japan, Chile

Essay On National Disaster Medical System

  • 1. Essay on National Disaster Medical System Citizens of the United States face catastrophic disaster such as hurricane, tornadoes, hazmat spills and flooding. Emergency management situations varies. Managers have to put into consideration the type of disasters or the response of citizens. A great example, the hurricane in Tuscaloosa, AL required large amounts of medical and debris assistance from teams to help return the destructed site back to prior condition. National Disaster Medical Systems would be one of the first to respond if there is a tragic event like in Tuscaloosa, AL. Threw research, I hope to cover the history, objectives, goals, and support towards National Disaster Medical System. National Disaster Medical System is a federally coordinated system that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... National Disaster Medical System has nearly 9,800 individuals working rigorously towards the success of emergency medical response, 8,000 of the 9,800 individuals are volunteers, while 1,800 are medically proficient civilians. Volunteers help many victims by providing food, lodging, and clothing. NDMS responding teams help prevent further casualties in the event of an emergency. In addition, NDMS is not an emergent organization, but NDMS does help disseminate information to those who seek it, provide solutions for protection and plans for organizing the people who show up to help after the disaster. The NDMS is an interagency partnership between the Department of Health and Human Service (HHS), the Department of Homeland Security (HS), the Department of Defense (DOD), and the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA) and is based on the 2005 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)between these agencies (ndms.fhpr.osd.mil). The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) has been serving as a federal system that depicts the Nation's medical response capability. NDMS has been known as an emergent organization since 1984. The formation of NDMS was formed due to executive order, by the fortieth President Ronald Regan. In addition, NDMS serves as part of the Public Health Service in HHS as a public–private healthcare institutions; its purpose was to provide medical evacuation and definite care in the U.S. ... • 2. Earthquake Problems The Earthquake struck the country at 4:53 p.m, it was a time that many people were out and about, at school, at work or just outside doing things. It was pure chaos from the moment it struck the overly populated city. There were very few rescues that first evening of the earthquake, and as night fell, residents found themselves in a world of darkness and grief" (Petrou). One of the larger problems with the earthquake was that it destroyed much of it's government offices and the capital city of Port–au–Prince, many of the resources that would have helped rescue people and revive the city were destroyed. Port–au–Prince had a population of 2 million people at the time, that's almost a fourth of the countries population, but the capitals infrastructure is layed out to support just over 115,000. So on top of the overpopulation in the area, you have a massive catastrophe and a whole lot of people with nowhere to go, especially with all of the rubble. There wasn't much of anything that residents could do, other than to help each other. Fredson Demostherma, a resident of Leogane said "Haiti's future is in the hands of other nations, and God,"(Petrou). Fredson was with his family in his home when the tragedy struck, he jumped out of his second floor window, only to see the the rest of his family get trapped among the rubble. That was the scene for many residents, seeing their loved ones die instantly or not being able to help, or have someone to call. There were no resources to go ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Truth : The Dilemma Media Outlets Face Vanessa Cuenco Rhet 110–18 Prof. MacKenzie Analysis/Evaluation/Synthesis 5 December 2014 Morality vs. Truth: The Dilemma Media Outlets Face We are surrounded by news. Because of the amount of technology readily available at our fingertips, news is everywhere. It is no longer predominately supplied to the public through newspapers or radios at scheduled times. Instead, news is accessible nearly anywhere at any time. With just a click of a button, news can be accessed from your phone, tablet, or laptop in no time at all. Through different news sites, or even on different social medias, you can find local, national, and international news. Stories can range anywhere from pop culture to more serious topics like tragedies. Some of those news stories create an ethical dilemma, especially when they involve death. Though news stories and their images are meant to be informational, their content can sometimes be unsettling for readers. The use of certain diction and the connotation that word choice creates can offend some people while not even phasing others. The two articles "Face to Face with Tragedy" and "Disturbing Media Images of Haiti Earthquake Aftermath Tell Only Part of the Story" portray positive and negative views on a particular international event covered by multiple news sources. Both articles explore how the media shares information and the different ways readers interpret it. The authors suggest ethical dilemmas faced by news media. When documenting ... • 8. What Was The Causes Of Haiti Earthquake The earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010 caused 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings to collapse or be damaged. The earthquake also killed 100,000 to 160,000 people. However, this earthquake was only a 7.0 on the moment magnitude scale. So why was there such severe damage in Haiti? The damage was especially severe because of the tectonic setting and energy levels, and because of Haiti's poor economic state. In this essay, we will explore each factor of damage in depth then see how they connect in order to fully understand why this damage occurred. The first damage factor we will delve into is the tectonic setting and energy levels of Haiti. In my drawing, you can see that the Caribbean plate (where Haiti is located) is in the middle of four larger tectonic plates (North American plate, Nazca plate, Cocos plate and the South American plate). Haiti is located in the northeast of the Caribbean plate on the border of the North American plate. This is a transform boundary and it also has two major strike–slip faults. The North American plate is moving westward at a rate of 2.3 cm per year and the Caribbean plate is moving eastward at less than one centimeter per year. This movement causes pressure to build up forming fault lines. There are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1990 Jean–Bertrand Aristide won 67% of the votes in the election. • 9. Kleist And The Birth Of The Earthquake Analysis Fortunate and merciful; yet brutal and poignant. Heinrich von Kleist's The Earthquake in Chile (1807) was indeed a story of love, but also contained a definite twist of ferociousness. In Isak Winkel Holm's "Earthquake in Haiti: Kleist and the Birth of Modern Disaster Discourse," Holm portrays two different interpretations of Kleist's story. He believes that the earthquake could mean the beginning of a siege of disaster or a merciful act for Josefa and Jeronimo's love. The two analyses are different and yet they equally correspond to each other's ideas. Thus, it is fair to say that the deconstruction led by the earthquake was an introduction to the catastrophe that will come in the near future and also the period where Josefa and Jeronimo could... The people of Santiago begin to take Jeronimo and Josefa as their own, and simply do not bring up their guilt and therefore treat them equally. As they all quickly adapt to their newly–formed surroundings, peace overcomes them even in the tragically deformed enclosure they face. Such as some are born into money; some come across good fortune yet most work hard from the start to get somewhere in the world. It just all depends on how you were brought into this world. For some people, life is full of stress and hardships. That's how life was for someone very dear to me Kimberly Domonique. She had it difficult from the start however, she chose not to let life get her down. When life gave her lemons, she made lemonade. When she got to high school at the age of fourteen years old, that is when she met other students of Haitian descent. She thought she moved away from the discrimination but she actually ran head onto it. In school the Haitians and the black Americans were separated voluntarily because of the same issues that occurred in Queens. The difference was that there were more Haitians in New Jersey and they stood together to defend each other. Meanwhile during the drama, she found her high school sweetheart which became her husband of twenty five years. Throughout the years of their relationship they went through several changes and hardships, they were blessed with three amazing kids who reside in the USA today. Life in Haiti was not a walk in the park for Kimberly. Now, school is extremely difficult and back then the competition for scholarships was at an all–time high. Not many people were wealthy. Most could barely afford to pay for school and only a small amount was considered well off. Placing monetary value on an individual's life is measured not by the way an individual has lived, but rather the individual's income; at least that is how society views life. Although saddening, people face tragedies that cause them to lose things most important to them every day. For example, when the earthquake in Haiti struck, the people of Haiti lost everything they considered valuable. Having faced many obstacles, Haitian people dealt with the disenfranchisement of their pride and their possessions; there are endless amounts of literature that reference to the tragedies that occurred in Haiti and how these mishaps have affected the life that they are having to live. On Tuesday January 12, 2010, the Haitian society knew that their world would never be the same. Having killed over 300,000 people and wounded more than 200,000 people, the magnitude 7.0 earthquake was demoralizing to the Haitians ("The 2010 Haiti Earthquake"). To make matters worse, following the magnitude 7.0 earthquake there were twelve aftershocks containing a magnitude larger than 5.0 ("Earthquake in Haiti"). The outcome of the earthquake was devastating to the extent that the minority of people who survived stood on the remains of their churches, grocery stores, and even their own homes. • 13. Cause And Effects Of The Haiti Earthquake On January 12th, 2010, the small country of Haiti was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated the city of Port–au–Prince and surrounding areas (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). The 30–second disaster was just the beginning of a collection of aftershocks that then struck the country relentlessly for days (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). Many areas were reduced to rubble leaving approximately one million Haitians homeless and 350 000 dead and another 300 000 injured (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). The ill–prepared country was sitting on two tectonic plates– the Caribbean and the North American, where there was slippage resulting in the earthquake (KS3 Bitesize Geography). Following the environmental catastrophe, the international community responded, and a relief effort began (Haiti earthquake of 2010, 2015). Though the earthquake happened quickly, the lasting impact and trauma remained. In an article from the Wall Street Journal, Luhnow and Dugan stated that following the event many people went searching for psychological support and aid instead of physical (2010). After having buildings tumble and fall onto people, many suffered from PTSD and survivors guilt; children were the most emotionally traumatized, and there was a fundamental lack of aid for facing psychological traumas endured by so many (Luhnow & Dugan, 2010). • 14. A Comparison and Contrast of Earthquake in Haiti and Chile... Introduction There are about 15 tectonic or lithospheric plates on the earth's surface, which have different size and move relative to one another over the earth's surface. As a result, the crust around the boundaries of the plates bends or deforms, accumulating strong energy during these processes (Briggs, 2006). When the strain becomes too great to bear by the crust in the future, the crust will snap or slip causing earthquakes. As a type of geophysical hazard, earthquakes are inevitable for mankind living on the Earth, which destroy tremendous buildings, and take human life away. However, influences of earthquakes can be reduced if people take appropriate actions. This report provide an overview of two earthquakes that happened in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 15. The Disaster Of The Haiti Earthquake : 2010 Disaster Haiti Earthquake: 2010 Disaster The Haiti Earthquake was a major catastrophic event that shook the ground for around 35 seconds which registered 7.0 magnitude on the Richter Scale on January 12, 2010, at around 4:53 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The earthquake hit The Republic of Haiti with the epicenter near the capital of Haiti– Port–au–Prince region ("The Devastating Haiti Earthquake: Questions and Answers"). The region includes the cities of Carrefour, Petion–Ville, Delmas, Tabarre, Cite Soleil, and Kenscoff, which were severely affected by the quake. However, the city of Leogane, which was the city closest to the epicenter, took the brunt of the force damaging and destroying 80%–90% of structures in the area. The earthquake led to more than 316,000 people dead or missing, 300,000 wounded, and over 1.3 million displaced from their homes and the majority of the people devastated (DesRoches, et al.). Let us take a look at how this earthquake in Haiti occurred. Earthquakes happen on the Earth's lithosphere, which is the outer layer of the Earth. There are three types of plate boundaries: extensional (divergent), compressional (convergent), and transform (J. Louie et al.). In a transform boundary, which is more relevant to the topic at hand, two massive plates called plate tectonics lock up against each other laterally preventing further movement and eventually building up pressure on themselves. This pressure buildup stores potential energy which ultimately translates into kinetic energy when the rocks can no longer hold onto the amount of pressure that builds up causing the two plates to horizontally move or slide abruptly, which is what we know as an 'Earthquake' (Tom Harris et al.). Earthquakes can also happen along fault lines, which are cracks that develop from the movement of the tectonic plates. Similarly, as with the plate tectonics, there are three types of faults: normal faults– up and down slippage of rocks or plates–, reverse faults– when a plate goes under another as a result of pushing against each other– and finally, the strike–slip faults– when two plates slip past each other laterally. They are usually found near the edges of the plates– such as the San Andreas Fault in California which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The 2010 Chile earthquake, 2010 Haiti earthquake, and 2015 Nepal earthquake each had varying impacts upon each country's economy, society, and culture. Haiti and Nepal's economics were both very different from Chili's economy post earthquake. Although Chile experienced economic loss, due to the destruction of infrastructure, fishing boats/ports, and vineyards they did not need to worry about money. Chile was one of the wealthiest countries in South America and had money reserved for emergencies. This preparation paid off for Chile when they experienced far less death than typically expected for a earthquake the size of their 2010 quake. Haiti and Nepal were both quite the opposite, with literally zero culture of preparedness being fostered by their respective governments. If not, let me introduce you to the Haiti Earthquake. This enormous earthquake destroyed many lives. It was believed to have been caused by the shifting of tectonic plates in the Earth. But, is this the truth? In 2010, an earthquake broke out in Haiti. The city was left in ruins, 1.5 million people lost their homes, and hundreds of thousands of people were either killed or injured. HAARP is believed to use their resources for weather warfare, which also plays into the role of the thought of HAARP causing the earthquake in Haiti. Some reasoning that causes this theory is as follows: Just a few hundred miles away from Haiti is a HAARP array; The earthquake did not occur on a big fault line. This earthquake happened quite farther south of the North American plate and Caribbean plate. It is rare that a quake is to occur here, which makes room for conspiracies that HAARP caused it. These are just two of the many reasons that stem from HAARP's involvement with the Haiti Earthquake. So how did HAARP cause the earthquake? HAARP has heaters in the Ionosphere. From these heaters comes ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) waves. These waves are powerful enough, at the right frequency, to cause vibrations in the Earth, which can lead to an earthquake. One reason as to why HAARP would want to cause an earthquake is because of the idea that Haiti is an unguarded, unwanted, low–protection country that could make a good place to test an earthquake. It also seems odd that, since this earthquake was deep in Earth's surface, it only affected ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The most severe impacts were observed on the Chilean coastline adjacent to the epicenter from San Antonio – Tirua, and 670 km offshore on the Juan Fernandez Archipelago (Synolakis, 2011; Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011). The tsunami hit many areas close to the epicenter within 30 minutes of the main event, however due to bathymetry and coastline shape, tsunami directions, impacts, and arrival times vary. (Synolakis, 2011; Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011). For example, Talcahuano Harbor located in The Bay of Concepcion 100 kilometers south of the epicenter experienced an impact from a resonated 129 minute period oscillating wave three hours after the main event (Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011). Resonance such as this occurred in various areas along the Chilean coastline, and was caused by standing and partial standing wave systems produced along the coast due to wave reflection between the continental shelf and the headlands, resulting in radiated tsunami energy to become trapped over the continental margin (Yamazaki and Cheung, 2011). 6. Land sliding The main event caused both terrestrial and submarine land sliding to occur in the area. Around 30 slides were delineated, with a majority of them being submarine (Volker, et.al., 2011). These submarine slides were confined to the walls of various submarine canyons, and were characterized as thin transitional slides retrograding into open slopes adjacent to the canyons (Volker, et.al., 2011).

The earthquake's epicentre was estimated to be around a mere 25 km away from the Port–au–prince, the capital of Haiti and home to Вј of the population. The closer the area was to the epicentre, the more intense the earthquake was and the greater the destruction. • 28. Essay On Haiti Earthquake Haiti has traditionally been the poorest country in the Western hemisphere and has repeatedly been a victim of natural disasters such as hurricanes, torrential rains, floods and earthquakes. Several natural disasters have plagued the country, destroying everything, and affecting everyone's health, specifically women's and children's. These uncontrolled and unexpected events such as Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Ike have caused spikes in health issues such as cholera, AIDS, unwanted pregnancies and children who lack proper care. On January 12, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti originating from a point 25 miles away from the capital of Port–au–Prince. Photographic evidence and first hand reports made it immediately evident that there was massive physical damage and that the loss of life would be high. Food and water made its way slowly and insufпЃciently to the survivors; rescue and medical workers could not save all the trapped and wounded (Petersen). However, some of the greatest problems occurred weeks, months or even years later. Haiti has tried to abide by the Child Rights Convention's Article Six that states that every child has an inherent right to life, but it has been difficult. An examination of the effects of the earthquake and the resulting problems focusing on healthcare such as women's safety and reproductive care, the spread of diseases, the impact of poverty and the decline in the mental and physical stability of the youth, demonstrates the negative impacts the disaster had, especially on the country's children. The 2010 earthquake left Haiti's people in shock and confusion, causing the women many issues with both their safety and reproductive health. In the aftermath of a disaster, women and girls are extremely vulnerable to sexual coercion and violence. In Haiti the breakdown of law and order, and the growing civil unrest, placed women and girls at a significantly increased risk (Claeys). After the the quake, women had a lot of trouble finding or affording contraceptives and as a result, some women could not use protection regularly or discontinued using contraception altogether (Balsari). Because it is defined as the economic activity that occurs outside the regulations and is hidden from the authorities, it is especially difficult to detect and measure. The size and the approach to measure the underground economy varies according to the institution conducting the estimation. However, it is fair to say that approximately half of the Dominican Economy is informal. Table 1 summarizes a few measurements of the abovementioned sector for the Dominican Republic. To better understand the immigration trends in Dominican Republic, figure 2 presents the evolution of immigrants from 2008 to 2012 (last year for which data is available). • 32. Risk And Politics Of Disaster Coverage Analysis of "Risk and Politics of Disaster Coverage in Haiti and Katrina" Introduction and Purpose of the Study The article, "Risk and Politics of Disaster Coverage in Haiti and Katrina," by Jennifer Petersen of the University of Virginia, which appeared in the journal Communication, Culture & Critique in 2014, provides a comparison and contrast of the media coverage of Hurricane Katrina (2005), which devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast and was the costliest natural disaster in the nation's history, and the Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, which devastated one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. The purpose of the article is to discuss the reasons why the news media framed Hurricane Katrina as an unmitigated and unimaginable catastrophe that violated expected norms, while the 2010 Haiti earthquake was framed as an almost routine and manageable crisis, despite the fact that the Haiti earthquake caused much more loss of life and human suffering than Katrina. This purpose is discussed in both the short, nine–line abstract, and the introduction. Literature Review and Research Questions Petersen cites more than 50 sources as references for her study. Many of these sources are the news programs on NBC and CNN, which she compared when reviewing the coverage of each disaster. However, the reference list also includes a fair number of other scholarly journal articles and publications by reputable academic publishers. The author provides the ... • 33. Life Is The Way Life Life is something that requires a lot of physical and mental exertion. Some are sufficiently lucky to have everything arranged for them. For example, some are naturally introduced to cash; some run over favorable luck yet most buckle down from the begin to get some place on the planet. It simply all relies on upon how you were brought into this world. For a few individuals, life is brimming with anxiety and hardships. That is the way life was for somebody dear to me Kimberly Domonique. She had it troublesome from the beginning however, she picked not to give life a chance to get her down. At the point when life gave her lemons, she made lemonade. Kimberly is from the island of Haiti, she moved to the states at the age of ten years old. She lived in Queens, New York with her step mother, she was enrolled in public school shortly after her arrival. Going to school in America was difficult for her because she did not know how to speak nor understand the English language. She told me that what was also hard for her was developing friendships because there was no one like her that had her background. She moved out of Queens because of the violence that was occurring between black Americans and foreigners. The problem was that the foreigners used their methods of learning from their country and used it to their advantage because education was not free for them like it is here in the states. So this allowed them to get good grades and advance well, which made the black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Haiti Case Study On 12 January 2010 Haiti's capital city, Port–au–Prince, was rocked by a 7.0 earthquake. Being that it is an island with minimal internal support, they have to rely on external sources in the world for help and rebuilding their own infrastructure. While there are numerous governmental and non–governmental organizations to assist, no one is better equipped for immediate worldwide response than the United States Army. We'll look at the equipment the U.S Army had available and how they employed these assets to help the Haitian's. G Company, 407 Brigade Support Battalion was the Forward Support Company (FSC) called to the task of humanitarian aid for the Haitian people. At any time, the FSC usually had around 14 vehicles on the ground ranging from high mobility multi wheeled vehicles (HMMWV's) to wreckers and fuelers. The primary use of these vehicles was transportation of goods and services from transport aircraft of boats to provide assistance for feeding the local populace and rebuilding the crippled infrastructure. The FSC did not have its own ambulance or hospital teams so the vehicles were also used to transport Haitian's to the hospital in Port–au–Prince or to the ocean port to be transported to the USS Comfort for medical treatment. This earthquake was part of the Enriquillo Plantain Garden fault zone which causes many strike slip fault earthquakes as it slides part the Caribian plate as well as the North American plate. The epicenter of this earthquake was relatively shallow at 13km, which caused there to be more traumatic shaking. It was given a 9 on the Mercalli scale for the destructive shaking. • 37. The Role Of Muckraking In Haiti In total, the American Red Cross has received $488m in donations to aid in rebuilding the poor neighborhood of Campeche in Haiti's capital city, Port–Au–Prince (Sullivan et al.). With this copious amount of money, the organization has only built six permanent homes in all of Haiti. Where did all of that money go, and why hasn't it been used to provide assistance to the poor country? Thanks to muckraking done by NPR and ProPublica's investigative journalists, there has been information uncovered about the American Red Cross's scandal. • 40. Cause And Effect Essay On Chilean Earthquake 1 Introduction: A natural hazard is an extreme event that occurs naturally and causes harm to humans or other things we care about, while a Geomorphic hazard is that originating from the lithosphere including, volcanic eruption, earthquake and tsunamis. An earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically showing great destruction. This report will focus on the Great Chilean earthquake. I will report and examine the causes, details, effects including, social, environmental and economical. I will also examine what has been done to prepare, prevent and minimise the hazard and suggest ways to further minimise the effects of this hazard. 2 Information about the event: 2.1 The great Chilean earthquake; the largest earthquake ever recorded struck Valdivia, Chile (See figure 2.1) 2.2 On May 22, 1960, at 3:11 pm origin time. 2.3 The 1960 Chile earthquake was caused by the Nazca plate releasing tension and descending 15 meters underneath the South American Plate. According to Farfel (2011) on Tuesday, January 12th an earthquake with a 7.0 magnitude struck Haiti leaving more than 1 million people homeless, 300000 injured and an estimated number of 316000 deceased. This paper will discuss how Haiti in 2010 could have been more prepared for the earthquake with the building standards being adequate, having an advantage of support by Haitian government and abundant response to those in need, as well as more coordinated help from other countries. This failure to consider what chaos these safety violations can create is one of the reasons so many people had to suffer. Furthermore, the support that Haiti's government has provided was not sufficient enough. Hou and Shi (2011) argued that the state of emergency was not proclaimed until day 6, only 3433 nearby area policeman out of 6000 responded, the Haitian government and MINUSTAH have been out of synchronization with responding to issues due to their building collapsing. Many haitians have been wounded and in critical condition, perhaps if the rescue teams have been there faster this could have been avoided. Limited numbers of 3433 policeman were helping those in critical condition for the amount of people that needed help, as mentioned before 300000 were injured and 316000 deceased. The government has been slow with issuing units and resources and could not address the issues right away, this put a lot of lives in jeopardy.
