Now that we have worked with the different
steps of the writing process, we will start our
writing process for the essay: “My goals for the
9th grade”. (Performance task)
As a prewriting activity, we will make a list of at
least three goals we have for English class. We
will choose which three goals are the most
important for us to achieve and write and create
an outline for our essay.
5. Introduction
• Consists of one paragraph
• Address the topic in the first sentence
• Present three examples or ideas to support your
opinion
6. Body
• Consists of three paragraphs
• 1st
paragraph details on example one
• 2nd
paragraph details on example two
• 3rd

• Each paragraph should have three to five sentences
• Use transitional words and phrases to strengthen the
organization, such as:
First of all, In conclusion,
Secondly, As I have stated,

10. WHY AN OUTLINE?
An outline will help make your essay more organized. A
careful plan will help your body paragraphs stay focused
on the ideas in your thesis statement.
An outline saves time for writers. Preparing an outline
can take time, but when you are finished, you will be
able to write the rough draft of your essay more quickly
than if you didn’t have an outline.
