INTRODUCTION
INTERMEDIATE PERFORMANCE
MUSICIANS WANT TO BE THE
LOUD VOICE FOR SO MANY
QUIET HEARTS
Billy Joel
LEARNING OUTCOMES
▸ By the end of today's session, students will be able to:
▸ Understand the assessment structure and weekly outline
of the course
▸ Agree on a classroom contract
▸ Set 3 SMART goals for themselves to achieve by the end of
the semester
▸ Practice creative journalling
INTRODUCTION
▸ Course Outline
▸ Weekly Schedule
▸ Getting to know each other
▸ Class Contract
▸ What we want to get out of this paper
▸ Forming an Ensemble
▸ Creative practice: Journalling
GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER
▸ Pair up with a class mate and have a chat with them.
▸ Find out three things you have in common
▸ Ask what instrument they play, how long they have played,
and what performance experience they have had.
▸ Introduce your partner to the class, including all of the
above information
WHO ARE YOU AS A PERFORMER?
▸ Think about what kind of performance personality you
have - are you the class clown? A panic mechanic? A soft
and gentle siren? A show off?
▸ Find a short Youtube video, GIF or meme that sums up
who you are as a performer
▸ Share your clip with the class
▸ See if we can guess what kind of performer you are based
on your clip.
MEGAN IS:
CLASS CONTRACT
▸ What is the standard of behaviour for our class this semester?
▸ What do you expect from your tutor?
▸ What do you expect from each other?
▸ What kinds of behaviours are unacceptable.
▸ Brainstorm in small groups. Post ideas in Class Contract forum on
Moodle.
▸ Share your findings with the class
▸ Agree on a class contract
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO GET OUT OF THIS PAPER
▸ Set 3 goals you wish to achieve through this paper, other
that “I want to pass this paper”
▸ Make your goals SMART goals
▸ Share one goal with the class
▸ Post your goals in the Week 1 journal submission box on
Moodle.
CREATIVE PRACTICE: JOURNALLING
▸ In Jeremy’s words: “a journal of cool shit”
▸ It’s important to keep track of things that inspire us as
creative practitioners
▸ Anything can be included in these journals - everything we
include will shape us as performers, and creatives.
▸ Include at least one link to a cool video, image, website,
song etc in your journal entries each week - write a short
paragraph explaining why it’s cool to you.
▸ At the start of every class this semester, we will have a
“cool shit sharing session” - I invite you to share any cool
stuff you’ve found through the week with your classmates,
particularly if it relates to performance.
▸ Journals are due every Monday by 5pm without
exception.
