Part 3 Section 1: Academic and professional Integrity
There is a strong direct relationship between academic
integrity and writing. How a scholarly work is written
represents its owner’s level of academic integrity. Writings that
have been falsified and plagiarized, for instance, do not meet
the required standards of academic integrity. The intentional
falsification and fabrication of scholarly information in either
assignments or research works is a serious violation of
academic integrity (McHaney, Cronan & Douglas, 2019). In the
last decade, there has been a surge in different forms of breach
of academic integrity, partly necessitated by the emergence and
proliferation of information technologies. For instance, ghost
writers lack sufficient time and resources to gather factual data
for studies that require students to undertake real research
within the actual research site. This problem results in
falsifying and fabricating information, thereby tampering with
the universally recommended standards of academic integrity.
Furthermore, plagiarism occurs when a student fails to observe
standards of academic integrity such as correct referencing
practices and treating others’ works as theirs.
Professional practices are strongly related to scholarly
ethics. Professionalism is founded on the ideals of observing
evidence-based scholarly works to guide decision-making in
different areas of life. Therefore, when the body of these
scholarly works are corrupt and based on falsehood, they can
misguide experts in embracing the right professional decisions
when they are confronted with complex problems. Observing
scholarly ethics and integrity directly translates into proper
professional practices in different specialty areas. Universities
are firms of special status in the society (Macfarlane, Zhang &
Pun, 2014). Globalization implies that integrity failures
5. interfere with institutional brands and the credibility of higher
education systems. Professional practices are founded on the
credibility of institutions of higher learning to churn out
scholars who can deal with real and complex problems within
their areas of expertise. As such, academic corruption reduces
people’s observance of professional practices in their
subsequent career life.
Part 3, Section 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
There are various strategies that I am going to embrace to
boost the integrity and ethics of my work as an MSN student
and professional nurse. For instance, I will strive to avoid all
forms of academic dishonesty, such as intentional lying,
cheating, and false representation. Additionally, I will minimize
loopholes for plagiarism through assessment design, such as
customization, avoiding improper citations, and increase my
level of originality. I will also avoid plagiarism by avoiding
copy pasting the texts verbatim from the reference materials and
instead putting the ideas in my own words. Furthermore,
quotations can be utilized to indicate that the textual
information has been lifted from another work. These quotes
need to be precisely in the same manner in which they appear in
the original work from which they were taken (Information
Resources Management Association, 2019). Falsification of data
is one of the most common forms of cheating in academia. In
order to avoid it, I will conduct real studies and report the exact
factual data without adding biases or opinions.
In my career life as a nurse, I plan to use different forms
of strategies to uphold professionalism. For instance, I will
follow professional rules and regulations that guide the field of
nursing. For instance, code of ethics for nurses often include
descriptions that are associated with professional
responsibilities and duties that support and maintain societal
purposes of the profession (Kangasniemi, Pakkanen &
Korhonen, 2015). Furthermore, I will adhere to both national
and international legal standards that guide nurses’ activities. In
many societies, national or international advisory documents
6. hel0p to inform policies, provide professional identity, as well
as regulate the nursing profession. Another strategy that I can
employ to conform to universally-agreed ethical practices for
nurses is to work with multidisciplinary teams to guide my
decision-making practices. Inter-professional collaborations can
provide me with more insights into effective adherence to the
recommended professional practices.
Many critical thinking frameworks and models can be
employed to promote acceptable professional practices in
nursing. When conducting research or completing a complex
task, for instance, I would use Imogene King’s conceptual
system approach to practice critical thinking. This model
emphasizes on the continuing capacity of people to meet their
essential needs so that they can function within their socially
defined roles (Kearney-Nunnery, 2015). Nurses can use the
model to improve their perception by effectively organizing and
interpreting information from sense data and memory. Such
memories can grant meaning to people’s experiences and
represent their image on reality. Nursing practices are directed
towards supporting people to maintain their health conditions so
that they can effectively function within their roles. The King’s
practice model, which is the basis for goal attainment, helps to
improve a nurse’s interaction with patients in order to optimize
positive health outcomes.
Finally, I will uphold professional practice by ensuring
that my work focuses on promoting wholeness for all people,
healthy or sick. Patients are partners and participants in nursing
care. As such, they are temporary dependents of the nurse. As a
nurse, my goal should end such a dependence by providing
quality of care, avoid errors and malpractices, and improve
patient safety. One practice that can support the attendance of
this goal is to formulate an effective nursing care judgment that
is supported by evidence-based scientific methods (Kearney-
Nunnery, 2015). For instance, the nurse should collect data that
will inform nursing decisions and practices with the utilization
of relevant assessment models to establish objective empirical
7. rationales for decision-making. In all decisions that I will make,
I will ensure that I understand the basis for any prescribed
medical regimen, such as medical diagnoses and the patient’s
history.
