Women In The 1900's
Tennis Clothes for Women in the 1800's
Women have been playing tennis since tennis was originated. Back in 1874, women played tennis,
but they only played mixed doubles, which is when men and women play together as partners. The
clothes women wore back then is way different then what we wear nowadays. Back then, women
had to wear a bustle skirt and a corset. This wasn't really the ideal clothing to wear on a sweltering
day while playing tennis. This is probably why a woman playing in the Wimbledon, a tennis
tournament which began in 1877 as a fundraiser, fainted in the second set on that hot, sunny day.
This incident probably occurred because that women was wearing tight and hot clothes while
playing tennis, but instead of taking this incident as a reason to change women's clothing, this
incident became one of the reasons why today women play less sets than men, which was one of the
reasons why they got less prize money than men.

Then, after a while, women's tennis began to look different in terms of what women wore while
playing tennis. Near the 1920's, women began to wear less restrictive clothes, but alas, they were
still long skirts. Then, American tennis player, Helen Wills Moody, who played in the 1930's was the
one who really changed what women wore to play tennis. She wore something that looks like what
women wear today. Finally, women could play tennis properly with being held back with the weight
of there heavy bustle skirts. Women's tennis has changed a lot in terms of what they wear, and it has

Catherine Bellis Research Paper
Could ever imagine getting the chance to play in the US Open? Unimaginable right? Well what
about if you were fifteen and getting the chance to play? Even more unimaginable. But that's just
what Catherine Bellis did! Catherine is the youngest to qualify for the US Open since 1996 when
Anna Kournikova did it. The only way she qualified was by winning the USTA girls' 18s national
championship. Even at this tournament she was the youngest to win since 1991 when Lindsay
Davenport won it.
When playing in the USTA national championship she pulled off one of the biggest upsets ever
seen! (Besides her match in the US Open). She played the number one ranked Marie Bouzkova from
the Czech Republic. Since Bellis is ranked 1,208th, winning this match and even the whole
tournament was a huge surprise to everyone! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the whole game she was nervous but ended up pulling out the win! Winning in 6–4, 4–
6, 6–4 sets. Meaning she would move on to the second round of the tournament.
Next the article talked about how Bellis was nervous to play in front of all these huge crowds. After
winning the USTA and arriving at the US Open she had grown a huge fan base. So huge that she
needed several security guards and event staff to help her to and from her arenas because of all the
fans wanting pictures and autographs. It also told us that while she was waiting in one of the
hallways that she received so many text messages congratulating her and wishing her luck that she
couldn't keep track and lost track of how many there actually was.
The article also told us that Bellis was only one of twelve women from the US that qualified, along
side of Serena and Venus Williams. It also told us that only three US men qualified. The highest
ranked being John Isner, who was ranked

The Equality Of Payment For Both Women And Men
The equality of payment for both women and men
Thanks to Venus Williams and Billie Jean King fight at Wimbledon, women now have equal pay at
tournaments. Venus and Serena Williams faced each other in an intense match at the Wimbledon
tournament that ended in victory for younger sister Serena. Venus Williams has fought and helped
win a long battle for women athletes. According to ESPNW, Williams made her first public mention
of the need for grand slam events to award equal prize money to men and women back in 1998,after
a first round Wimbledon match. At the time in the world, the U.S. open was the only grand slam
tournament that awarded equal prize money to male and females champions. At Wimbledon, one of
the major grand slam events and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That same year, Roger Federer won the men's championship game against American Andy Roddick
in straight sets, collecting $1.13 million in prize money. But, his female counterpart, Williams won
only $1.08 million. After Venus speech at the All England Club, the women's championship prize
money was increased, according to ESPN W, but still did not match the men's award. A question
was asked in the year 2006 of why the pay gap persisted in the face of increasing criticism, the club
chairman , Tim Phillips, justified the prize discrepancy saying the physical demands of the men's
best of five matches are much higher than those of the women's best of three. The club didn't view
the prize as an "equal rights issue". The top ten ladies last year earned more from Wimbledon than
the top 10 men did by playing in the double tournaments. Venus is a superior athlete, a legend but
she is also an activist who revolutionized her sport off the court with her fight for prize equality.
People thought this story shouldn't be regulated to dusty history books and British newspapers.
People in the United States should know of her true professional bravery and personal tenacity in
making sure women athletes are regarded and rewarded on par with their male counterparts. This
was Williams's mission. The CEO of the women's tennis association (WTA) Larry Scott, asked
Venus Williams if she would be willing to play a central role in aggressively pursuing equal pay, a
mission she embraced. Williams

The Colonel Michael Hogan Summary
The author of The Colonel, Michael Hogan, details how a certain Army Colonel influenced his life
through the sport of tennis. Hogan begins by indicating how mainstreamed tennis is today, to the
point an average adolescent could not imagine tennis as a 'rich man' sport. In the fifties, when Hogan
was a child, tennis was a sport reserved for mostly men at country clubs and private resorts. Women
had competed at international competitions such as Wimbledon for a several years, but many of
them were amateurs (oftentimes paid little). Fortunately for female tennis players, Billie Jean King's
assertiveness, in 1967, and the Virginia Slim tournaments, in the seventies, influenced tennis to
include women in professional tennis (such as Chris Everts ... Show more content on

Hogan's father told him of the great players from his day: Poncho Gonzales, Ken Rosewall, Jack
Kramer. He did not really care, as the names meant nothing to him, but he looked up to the Colonel,
with great stories about the recent war. Hogan was interested in war stories as his father's brother,
Harry, died in Belgium during the war; Harry's name memorialized the nearby Little League
baseball field. On a Saturday afternoon, after getting home early from work, Hogan stopped to talk
with the Colonel. The Colonel obviously loved tennis, telling stories from competitions when in
college and in the service. He amused the young boy with stories of tournaments, matches with
famous players, and games in remote parts of the world. The Colonel considered tennis a sport, after
one learns how to play it, that person can play for the rest of their life. When one has no one to play
with, or their body stops working correctly, one can still enjoy a game of tennis (but not football,
basketball, or baseball). Tennis could be played anywhere, as one can always find someone to play
with. The Colonel hooked the young Hogan to play. Maybe it was the Colonel's stories, Hogan's
enthusiasm, his respect of the Colonel's rank, his cheerful personality, or his war experiences. Hogan
may have not wanted to disappoint the venerable man (and likely so); despite this, Hogan was ready
to learn the game of

Bobby Rigg Research Paper
The Battle of the Sexes ended with Bobby Riggs's evisceration by Billie Jean King in three straight
sets, 6–4, 6–3, and 6–3. As Billie Jean King said in an interview preceding the match, "without
women's tennis really making a name for itself, there was no way in the world that we could've had
a $100,000 winner takes all match, such as we're having now." The gains of the women's equality
movement allowed for the Battle of the Sexes to become the spectacle that it was. If Billie Jean
King or even Margaret Court had played Bobby Riggs, and beaten him originally, they wouldn't
have been able to prove that women were equal to men. However, due to the immense following and
popularity of this match, King's win made an important statement to the tennis ... Show more

In the end, both King and Riggs had won. King and women's tennis had made "money from
[Riggs]," and Riggs had made money from the match. Nonetheless, the outcome of this match did
not ultimately change tennis. Though the match brought awareness to the disparities between men's
and women's tennis, little was truly done to change the situation. It took 28 years for a grand slam,
excluding the US Open, to regularly award equal prize money to both men and women, and still
more time for the rest to follow in suit. While tennis is progressive in comparison to other sports in
its implementation of equal prize money to both genders, disparities still exist. Men and women still
do not receive the same pay for playing. It can be argued that Serena Williams, the number one
ranked women's player, is currently one of the most famous tennis players, yet she receives a little
over half the pay of the number one ranked men's player. Despite this, female athletes have not
given up on the fight for equality. The recent awareness brought to wage discrimination in sports
through the US women's soccer team has allowed for discussions surrounding the disparities
between women's and men's

Gender Stereotypes In Tennis Uniforms By Serena Williams
Serena Williams occupies a unique position as she is not simply one of the most successful and
wealthiest athletes in the world but she is also a black woman. Due to this, conversations about her
focus on how she doesn't fit into the normalized, ideal mold of what a woman athlete should look
and behave like (Foster, 2015). These discussions often revolve around how she as dressed, resulting
in Williams being "almost as famous for her fashion statements as she is her ground strokes"
(Schultz, 2005). Williams' outfits on the court become even greater in meaning when you become
aware that she has studied fashion design and often mentions in interviews how fashion "allows her
to make a personal statement" (Yaeger, 2009). For these reasons, I set ... Show more content on

typical preppy nature of the sport. It is very rare to see a conservative print such as stripes on
Williams, although she did wear a pink dress with small black polka dots to the 2014 Australian
Open championships. Williams has also worn more abstract patterns such as a black dress
emblazoned with an orange scale–like pattern at the 2015 US Open and a black dress featuring a red
medallion and gold abstract shapes to the 2006 US Open. Most recently, she wore a black and white

Serena Williams: The Greatest Female Tennis Player
I have been watching the U.S. Open religiously over these past two weeks. The world riveted and
awe–struck as Serena Williams the greatest female tennis player to ever live approached the
possibility of garnering a Grand Slam – winning four major championships within one calendar year
– a feat last achieved in 1988. The world watched with bated breath as she meticulously defeated her
opponents. Her victories were by no means easy. She struggled, she looked at times defeated, but in
the change over between sets, in the seconds between one game and the next, she gathered her
strength and kept pushing forward. On 9/11/2015, a day forever etched in the lives of the American

Minority Groups In Professional Sports Essay
According to Flake et al., (2013), "Net of various productivity measures, the average female player
earned less than her male counterpart for every singles tournament won in 2009" (p. 670).
Understanding that some level of skill difference could be to blame for difference in numbers Flake
et al., (2013) dove deeper into the issue. According to Flake et al., (2013), "We also find that while
prize money for men and women is equal in prestigious tournaments such as Grand Slam events,
women's prize money is considerably lower in many of the less publicized tournaments" (p. 672). To
find that women only get paid in a similar amount in tournaments that are more publicised seems to
be a large lack of ethics in the professional tennis community. ... Show more content on

This belief is reinforced because minority representation in professional sports is exceptionally
larger than the minority representation in the labor force for the United States (Kahn, 1991, p. 395).
Although minority groups are more represented in professional sports than they were in the past,
they still do not hold many managerial or executive level positions. There is a debate on why
minority groups are excluded from these types of positions. One group argues that, "minorities are
excluded from these positions because of negative stereotypes about black players' intelligence or
leadership abilities" (Kahn, 1991, p. 407). Another explanation to why minority groups might not be
in central positions is because of discrimination in training. Positions like quarterback, pitcher, and
linebacker in professional sports require more training than a regular position like an outfielder or
blocker. Minority groups that do not receive the same amount of training as white people in these
positions will most likely choose a non–central position. People in these central positions sometimes
discriminate against minority groups and believe they will not be able to train them because they are
not capable of learning these

What Is The Role Of Women In The 1950's
Throughout the course of history, societies were usually predominantly male because women were
always seen as the mentally and physically weaker sex; however, when women wished to participate
in society, they were criticized and discouraged from doing so. Their roles in life consisted of being
submissive to men, taking care of the house, and providing for their family. Besides that, women
really had no other purpose. One of the many ways that women overcame their struggle of
oppression was by competing in athletics or the Olympics. According to Mishe Semyonov, there is a
positive correlation between women in the labor force and their participation in the Olympics and a
negative correlation between a women's fertility rate and participation in the Olympics. It is
expected that women were not very involved in athletics due to their domestic responsibilities, but
as time progressed, more women stepped out of their separate spheres to pursue opportunities that
were thought to be "masculine." The Olympic Games was crucial to the emergence of women
participation in societal events since it broke the social barriers that prevented them from gaining

There is an old saying about being in the right place at the right time, and for female athlete Billie
Jean, this statement could have been her life motto. Billie Jean had the right ambition, attitude, and

tomboy daughter to play sports, however, her first realization about her future as a professional

she hoped to have a future as a professional player, she was going to have to choose a more

Unequal Pay In Tennis Research Paper
Should women receive the same prize money as men in professional tennis? As it stands now, both
men and women garner about the same amount of prize money from winning tournaments.
However, it hasn't always been this way. Only until recently did men and women earn similar prize
money, especially in Grand Slams; where most of the prize money is won. One may argue that
women do no not play as much as men in matches, therefore they shouldn't be earning as much. For
example, women in professional tennis generally play less than their male counterparts; this is
especially true in the Grand Slams because women only have to play best two out of three sets to

Serena Williams Research Paper
Serena Williams, despite being an all–star tennis player is continually defined by the media, not by
her talent but rather her marketability as a black athlete. The media continues to define her in ways
they feel society should place a person of color that has reached success, and that place is the
"model" person of color. When a person of color reaches success, the media attempts to define them
as model persons of color (who people of color should aspire to be), so they can mold them into a
place that ultimately fits the white imagination. The white imagination is defined in The Meaning of

Although Serena could be a model, and boating is something most people do when analyzed further

"Despite some limited progress on how much media coverage women athletes receive, commentary

Williams does not talk about her faith much, but she is a Jehovah's Witness and attributes her
success to her faith. When she wins, she typically starts a victory interview with "I want to thank
Jehovah God."
Jehovah Witnesses do not typically support organized sports and are rarely athletes. According to the
Huffington Post, the Witnesses avoid sports since they "promote nationalism, violence and celebrity

Williams still participates in church services and has witnessed door–to–door. She prays, and trusts

Serena Williams' 10 second tirade in the 2009 U.S. Open tennis tournament may have cost her the
semi–final match, but what is the lasting impression on her legacy (Ford 1)? Sometimes during a
sporting event, athletes let their emotions get the best of them. Their attitude is like a ticking time
bomb, waiting to be set off by a bad call from the line judge, a good shot by the opponent, or a
simple mistake made by the player. Many people believe athletes should be able to control their
emotions and always exhibit great sportsmanship. However, the media and most spectators have

Consider figure skating's Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. In 1994, the assault of Nacy Kerrigan
by a hired assailant, supposedly hired by Harding, made the headlines and peaked the ratings of
figure skating (Mass Moments 1). Publicity is publicity, whether it is positive or negative (Bondy 1).
Serena was quoted in her apology as saying, "The whole point of leaning from your mistakes is not
to do the same thing." She pledged that she would not allow herself to lose control again (Ford 1).
Many will argue that Serena's raging personality and internal fire make her one of the best female
tennis players of all time (Bondy 2). Long–time tennis coach, Nick Bolletteri, called what Serena
did "not excusable, but certainly forgivable" (2). Obviously, what she did was unacceptable, but she
should be forgiven by society as a whole.
Another debatable topic on Williams' boorish act is how it fits in with the role of her gender. The
foolish foot fault call can be compared to an illegal defense violation made in the final seconds of a
tight NBA Finals game. Many analysts say that her reaction to the horrendous call was similar to the
reaction of a man. Serena's poor sportsmanship is proof that women can act as irrationally as me, but
should women be punished more harshly than men (Bondy 1)? Serena was fined $82,500 which is
nearly double the previous highest fine at $48,000 to Jeff Tarango in the 1990's when he stormed off

A tennis match known as the "Battle of the Sexes" began Billie Jean's King influence in finding

  • 3. Women In The 1900's Tennis Clothes for Women in the 1800's Women have been playing tennis since tennis was originated. Back in 1874, women played tennis, but they only played mixed doubles, which is when men and women play together as partners. The clothes women wore back then is way different then what we wear nowadays. Back then, women had to wear a bustle skirt and a corset. This wasn't really the ideal clothing to wear on a sweltering day while playing tennis. This is probably why a woman playing in the Wimbledon, a tennis tournament which began in 1877 as a fundraiser, fainted in the second set on that hot, sunny day. This incident probably occurred because that women was wearing tight and hot clothes while playing tennis, but instead of taking this incident as a reason to change women's clothing, this incident became one of the reasons why today women play less sets than men, which was one of the reasons why they got less prize money than men. Near the 1920's, women began to wear less restrictive clothes, but alas, they were still long skirts. Then, American tennis player, Helen Wills Moody, who played in the 1930's was the one who really changed what women wore to play tennis. She wore something that looks like what women wear today. Finally, women could play tennis properly with being held back with the weight of there heavy bustle skirts. Women's tennis has changed a lot in terms of what they wear, and it has improved to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Catherine Bellis Research Paper Could ever imagine getting the chance to play in the US Open? Unimaginable right? Well what about if you were fifteen and getting the chance to play? Even more unimaginable. But that's just what Catherine Bellis did! Catherine is the youngest to qualify for the US Open since 1996 when Anna Kournikova did it. The only way she qualified was by winning the USTA girls' 18s national championship. Even at this tournament she was the youngest to win since 1991 when Lindsay Davenport won it. When playing in the USTA national championship she pulled off one of the biggest upsets ever seen! (Besides her match in the US Open). She played the number one ranked Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic. Since Bellis is ranked 1,208th, winning this match and even the whole tournament was a huge surprise to everyone! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the whole game she was nervous but ended up pulling out the win! Winning in 6–4, 4– 6, 6–4 sets. Meaning she would move on to the second round of the tournament. Next the article talked about how Bellis was nervous to play in front of all these huge crowds. After winning the USTA and arriving at the US Open she had grown a huge fan base. So huge that she needed several security guards and event staff to help her to and from her arenas because of all the fans wanting pictures and autographs. It also told us that while she was waiting in one of the hallways that she received so many text messages congratulating her and wishing her luck that she couldn't keep track and lost track of how many there actually was. • 7. The Equality Of Payment For Both Women And Men The equality of payment for both women and men Thanks to Venus Williams and Billie Jean King fight at Wimbledon, women now have equal pay at tournaments. Venus and Serena Williams faced each other in an intense match at the Wimbledon tournament that ended in victory for younger sister Serena. Venus Williams has fought and helped win a long battle for women athletes. According to ESPNW, Williams made her first public mention of the need for grand slam events to award equal prize money to men and women back in 1998,after a first round Wimbledon match. At the time in the world, the U.S. open was the only grand slam tournament that awarded equal prize money to male and females champions. At Wimbledon, one of the major grand slam events and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That same year, Roger Federer won the men's championship game against American Andy Roddick in straight sets, collecting $1.13 million in prize money. But, his female counterpart, Williams won only $1.08 million. After Venus speech at the All England Club, the women's championship prize money was increased, according to ESPN W, but still did not match the men's award. A question was asked in the year 2006 of why the pay gap persisted in the face of increasing criticism, the club chairman , Tim Phillips, justified the prize discrepancy saying the physical demands of the men's best of five matches are much higher than those of the women's best of three. The club didn't view the prize as an "equal rights issue". The top ten ladies last year earned more from Wimbledon than the top 10 men did by playing in the double tournaments. Venus is a superior athlete, a legend but she is also an activist who revolutionized her sport off the court with her fight for prize equality. People thought this story shouldn't be regulated to dusty history books and British newspapers. People in the United States should know of her true professional bravery and personal tenacity in making sure women athletes are regarded and rewarded on par with their male counterparts. This was Williams's mission. The CEO of the women's tennis association (WTA) Larry Scott, asked Venus Williams if she would be willing to play a central role in aggressively pursuing equal pay, a mission she embraced. • 9. The Colonel Michael Hogan Summary The author of The Colonel, Michael Hogan, details how a certain Army Colonel influenced his life through the sport of tennis. Hogan begins by indicating how mainstreamed tennis is today, to the point an average adolescent could not imagine tennis as a 'rich man' sport. In the fifties, when Hogan was a child, tennis was a sport reserved for mostly men at country clubs and private resorts. Women had competed at international competitions such as Wimbledon for a several years, but many of them were amateurs (oftentimes paid little). Fortunately for female tennis players, Billie Jean King's assertiveness, in 1967, and the Virginia Slim tournaments, in the seventies, influenced tennis to include women in professional tennis (such as Chris Everts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hogan's father told him of the great players from his day: Poncho Gonzales, Ken Rosewall, Jack Kramer. He did not really care, as the names meant nothing to him, but he looked up to the Colonel, with great stories about the recent war. Hogan was interested in war stories as his father's brother, Harry, died in Belgium during the war; Harry's name memorialized the nearby Little League baseball field. On a Saturday afternoon, after getting home early from work, Hogan stopped to talk with the Colonel. The Colonel obviously loved tennis, telling stories from competitions when in college and in the service. He amused the young boy with stories of tournaments, matches with famous players, and games in remote parts of the world. The Colonel considered tennis a sport, after one learns how to play it, that person can play for the rest of their life. When one has no one to play with, or their body stops working correctly, one can still enjoy a game of tennis (but not football, basketball, or baseball). Tennis could be played anywhere, as one can always find someone to play with. The Colonel hooked the young Hogan to play. Maybe it was the Colonel's stories, Hogan's enthusiasm, his respect of the Colonel's rank, his cheerful personality, or his war experiences. Hogan may have not wanted to disappoint the venerable man (and likely so); despite this, Hogan was ready to learn the game of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Bobby Rigg Research Paper The Battle of the Sexes ended with Bobby Riggs's evisceration by Billie Jean King in three straight sets, 6–4, 6–3, and 6–3. As Billie Jean King said in an interview preceding the match, "without women's tennis really making a name for itself, there was no way in the world that we could've had a $100,000 winner takes all match, such as we're having now." The gains of the women's equality movement allowed for the Battle of the Sexes to become the spectacle that it was. If Billie Jean King or even Margaret Court had played Bobby Riggs, and beaten him originally, they wouldn't have been able to prove that women were equal to men. However, due to the immense following and popularity of this match, King's win made an important statement to the tennis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the end, both King and Riggs had won. King and women's tennis had made "money from [Riggs]," and Riggs had made money from the match. Nonetheless, the outcome of this match did not ultimately change tennis. Though the match brought awareness to the disparities between men's and women's tennis, little was truly done to change the situation. It took 28 years for a grand slam, excluding the US Open, to regularly award equal prize money to both men and women, and still more time for the rest to follow in suit. While tennis is progressive in comparison to other sports in its implementation of equal prize money to both genders, disparities still exist. Men and women still do not receive the same pay for playing. It can be argued that Serena Williams, the number one ranked women's player, is currently one of the most famous tennis players, yet she receives a little over half the pay of the number one ranked men's player. Despite this, female athletes have not given up on the fight for equality. The recent awareness brought to wage discrimination in sports through the US women's soccer team has allowed for discussions surrounding the disparities between women's and men's ... • 13. Gender Stereotypes In Tennis Uniforms By Serena Williams Serena Williams occupies a unique position as she is not simply one of the most successful and wealthiest athletes in the world but she is also a black woman. Due to this, conversations about her focus on how she doesn't fit into the normalized, ideal mold of what a woman athlete should look and behave like (Foster, 2015). These discussions often revolve around how she as dressed, resulting in Williams being "almost as famous for her fashion statements as she is her ground strokes" (Schultz, 2005). Williams' outfits on the court become even greater in meaning when you become aware that she has studied fashion design and often mentions in interviews how fashion "allows her to make a personal statement" (Yaeger, 2009). For these reasons, I set ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These textile designs range from tie–dye, she wore two different looks featuring the dyeing technique in 2000, to cheetah prints, at both Wimbledon and the French open in 2015 as well as the 2014 US Open. Both of these patterns are more typically seen in street clothes and do not match the typical preppy nature of the sport. It is very rare to see a conservative print such as stripes on Williams, although she did wear a pink dress with small black polka dots to the 2014 Australian Open championships. Williams has also worn more abstract patterns such as a black dress emblazoned with an orange scale–like pattern at the 2015 US Open and a black dress featuring a red medallion and gold abstract shapes to the 2006 US Open. Most recently, she wore a black and white dress with asymmetrical black and white design that emphasized her figure. • 15. Serena Williams: The Greatest Female Tennis Player I have been watching the U.S. Open religiously over these past two weeks. The world riveted and awe–struck as Serena Williams the greatest female tennis player to ever live approached the possibility of garnering a Grand Slam – winning four major championships within one calendar year – a feat last achieved in 1988. The world watched with bated breath as she meticulously defeated her opponents. Her victories were by no means easy. She struggled, she looked at times defeated, but in the change over between sets, in the seconds between one game and the next, she gathered her strength and kept pushing forward. On 9/11/2015, a day forever etched in the lives of the American people, in the back drop of the newly minted Freedom Tower there was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Minority Groups In Professional Sports Essay According to Flake et al., (2013), "Net of various productivity measures, the average female player earned less than her male counterpart for every singles tournament won in 2009" (p. 670). Understanding that some level of skill difference could be to blame for difference in numbers Flake et al., (2013) dove deeper into the issue. According to Flake et al., (2013), "We also find that while prize money for men and women is equal in prestigious tournaments such as Grand Slam events, women's prize money is considerably lower in many of the less publicized tournaments" (p. 672). This belief is reinforced because minority representation in professional sports is exceptionally larger than the minority representation in the labor force for the United States (Kahn, 1991, p. 395). Although minority groups are more represented in professional sports than they were in the past, they still do not hold many managerial or executive level positions. There is a debate on why minority groups are excluded from these types of positions. One group argues that, "minorities are excluded from these positions because of negative stereotypes about black players' intelligence or leadership abilities" (Kahn, 1991, p. 407). Another explanation to why minority groups might not be in central positions is because of discrimination in training. Positions like quarterback, pitcher, and linebacker in professional sports require more training than a regular position like an outfielder or blocker. Minority groups that do not receive the same amount of training as white people in these positions will most likely choose a non–central position. People in these central positions sometimes discriminate against minority groups and believe they will not be able to train them because they are not capable of learning these ... What Is The Role Of Women In The 1950's Throughout the course of history, societies were usually predominantly male because women were always seen as the mentally and physically weaker sex; however, when women wished to participate in society, they were criticized and discouraged from doing so. Their roles in life consisted of being submissive to men, taking care of the house, and providing for their family. Besides that, women really had no other purpose. One of the many ways that women overcame their struggle of oppression was by competing in athletics or the Olympics. According to Mishe Semyonov, there is a positive correlation between women in the labor force and their participation in the Olympics and a negative correlation between a women's fertility rate and participation in the Olympics. • 60. Not Excusable, But Certainly Forgivable Essay Serena Williams' 10 second tirade in the 2009 U.S. Open tennis tournament may have cost her the semi–final match, but what is the lasting impression on her legacy (Ford 1)? Sometimes during a sporting event, athletes let their emotions get the best of them. Their attitude is like a ticking time bomb, waiting to be set off by a bad call from the line judge, a good shot by the opponent, or a simple mistake made by the player. Many people believe athletes should be able to control their emotions and always exhibit great sportsmanship. However, the media and most spectators have never been in the same high–pressure situations as these athletes, and they should not judge without personal experience. Many people question the character of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Consider figure skating's Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. In 1994, the assault of Nacy Kerrigan by a hired assailant, supposedly hired by Harding, made the headlines and peaked the ratings of figure skating (Mass Moments 1). Publicity is publicity, whether it is positive or negative (Bondy 1). Serena was quoted in her apology as saying, "The whole point of leaning from your mistakes is not to do the same thing." She pledged that she would not allow herself to lose control again (Ford 1). Many will argue that Serena's raging personality and internal fire make her one of the best female tennis players of all time (Bondy 2). Long–time tennis coach, Nick Bolletteri, called what Serena did "not excusable, but certainly forgivable" (2). Obviously, what she did was unacceptable, but she should be forgiven by society as a whole. Another debatable topic on Williams' boorish act is how it fits in with the role of her gender. The foolish foot fault call can be compared to an illegal defense violation made in the final seconds of a tight NBA Finals game. Many analysts say that her reaction to the horrendous call was similar to the reaction of a man. Serena's poor sportsmanship is proof that women can act as irrationally as me, but should women be punished more harshly than men (Bondy 1)? Serena was fined $82,500 which is nearly double the previous highest fine at $48,000 to Jeff Tarango in the 1990's when he stormed off the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She explains that Wozniacki mocked Williams because she was not there, and because Wozniacki is envious of the success Williams had in Tennis. There was no justified reason for her to stuff her clothes. Awesomely Luvvie believes she needs to apologize for what she did. The other issue is Williams and Wozniacki are assumed to be friends, but are friends are allowed to do acts like this to each other, and if they are, can the public actually be angry at what they do?
