The Ownership of Time Warner
In 50's, there are over 500 media companies in America, but through many integrations, there are
only 6 major media institutions in America and they dominate nearly 98% of the market in America.
"The media monopoly" written by Ben Bagdikian in 1983 criticized that the concentration of the
media institution in America is fundamentally anti–democratic.
Moreover, In the process of globalisation, people of different countries are becoming "world
audiences". The demands for media texts produced by these 6 media institutions are increasing. For
example, In Hong Kong, most of the foreign films shown in cinema are produced from Hollywood.
And the programmes of the popular paid–TV channels are bought from these 6 major media
institution such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the above, it is shown that Time Warner is a very powerful media institution which holds all
kind of media. It possibly has great influences in the local US. Firstly, Ben Bagdikian stated that an
impressive picture of diversity that there are different kinds of publishing imprints in the market is
created. Consumers seem to have many selections. But actually, consumers have limited choices
only because many of them are owned by Time Warner and they may consist of similar ideologies of
the institution. Consumers are possibly imbued with the ideologies of Time Warner.
Secondly, Bagdikian questioned the editorial independence because editors may be required to
protect interests of the mother company. For example, a film produced by the studio of Time Warner
is commented from the public in both positive and negative sides. the editor or even the executive of
the magazines of the Time Warner would concern the interests of the Time Warner. Hence only the
positive comments may be selected to inform but neglect the negative comments in order not to
affect the box office. From the above case, the information informed to the public may not reflect
the real case.
Finally, concentrated media ownership can create strong political influences. The owners of the
media institution can also have direct control of over media products in order to create political
influence by promoting ideas that enhance their interests. For example, Time magazine

Warner Brothers And The New Medium Of Radio
When the company ran into financial difficulties in the mid–1920s, "It was Sam Warner 's interest in
the new medium of radio that led directly to Warner Brothers investing in the Vitaphone." Warner
Brothers then, made the first full–length all–talking film, and the first all–talking colour film in the
1920s.
Warner Brothers is a fully integrated, broad–based entertainment company, it is a global leader in all
forms of entertainment and their related businesses across all emerging and current media and
platforms. The multicultural, broad–based company is positioned at the forefront of every aspect of
the entertainment industry from feature films, television and home entertainment production and
worldwide distribution to Blu–ray and DVD, animation, digital distribution, comic books, brand
licensing and product and broadcasting. This is one of the most admirable, diversified and
successful motion picture and television studios in the world. This all begin when the four brothers
(Sam, Albert, Jack L and Harry Warner) embraced their up–and–coming movie company on April 4,
1923. Harry, the eldest of them all was the president of the company and ran its headquarters in New
York City, Albert, was its head of sales and distribution. Jack and Sam managed the studio in
Hollywood. Before the up–and–coming of the Warner Brothers, they were in the movie business
way before the Vitaphone idea. They would use a film projector and show movies in a tent that they

Studio System In Hollywood
In essence one could describe the Studio system as a particular method of filming, where the studios
in hollywood were in complete control of the production and distribution of a particular film (Lewis
2008). During the Golden Age of film the studio system was at its peak. Five major companies
dominated the world of movies, they all were conglomerates that owned the production, distribution
of their films. In the Golden Age, censorship was also at the forefront of the studio system.
Originally, censorship was determined by local boards, so began the self censhipric policies and
procedures of the hollywood world. The contract system falls within the realm of the studio system
and is vital in understanding what occurred during the Golden Age

The Film Industry Of Crisis By Frank O ' Hara
Introduction
A a result of my keen interest in my Media Studies Course I have chosen to look for a poem that
highlights the positive and negative viewpoints on different issues surrounding the film industry.
The poem I have found, "The Film Industry In Crisis" by Frank O'Hara in 1957, comments on the
choice audiences must make between "Glorious Silver Screen" or to the American LEgion or the
Catholic church. O'Hara also makes a brief reference to "give credit where it's due", which has lead
me to look further into the impacts of Illegal streaming of film. I also wonder about how the viewing
experience has been affected by external factors throughout history and what the impacts of
developing technology have been on the film industry as a whole.
How have changes to technology, including legal streaming sites, influenced the consumption of
films?
The way films are being made has significantly affected the way films are consumed with the
introduction of full colour viewing to the increase in resolution and frame rate of film as a result of
digitalisation of film in the early 2000's.
Access to entertainment has also changed with audiences shifting from traditional cinema to smaller
more readily accessible methods. Through the early 1900's cinema ticket sales in the US remained
steady, around 80–90 million sales annually (CyberCollege©). After the introduction of television in
1929, ticket sales began dropping and by the time the 1950's arrived ticket sales had dropped to

understanding of a neglected culture, the rage of the streets or anything else can explain it away. As
in much of today 's popular music, the line between performer and performance is purposely
blurred. These are political sermons clearly intended to endorse the sentiments being expressed
Time Warner states, "We stand for creative freedom. We believe that the worth of what an artist or
journalist has to say does not depend on pre–approval from a government official or a corporate
censor." Of course Ice–T has the right to say whatever he wants. But that doesn 't require any
company to provide him an outlet. And it doesn 't relieve a company of responsibility for the
messages it chooses to promote. Judgment is not censorship. Many an anguished cry goes
unrecorded. This one was recorded, and promoted, because a successful artist under contract wanted
to record it. There is nothing wrong with making money, but a company cannot take the money and
run from the responsibility. No commercial enterprise need agree with every word that appears
under its corporate imprimatur. Time Warner intends to be 'a global force for encouraging the
confrontation of ideas,' but a policy of allowing diverse viewpoints is not a moral free pass. Pro and

Warner Brothers Research Paper
When most people think of movies certain things come in mind. One of those things could be
certain logos. One of the most iconic logos in not only just the movie world, but the whole
entertainment world is the Warner Brothers logo. What a lot of people may not know is that that
logo represent one of the most successful entertainment companies of all time. Warner brothers is a
division of Time Warner and is one of the "Big Six" major American film studios along with Disney,
Fox, Paramount, Sony, and Universal.
Warner Brothers was started by a group of brothers named Harry, Albert, Jack, and Sam Warner.
They emigrated to Canada from Poland when they were young. The brothers bought a movie

the 1990s and 2000s Warner Bros. continued to create popular titles and keep its reign as a force in
the entertainment world. Movies such as Goodfellas, JFK, The Fugitive, and The Matrix were
popular among moviegoers and are some of the most successful films of the 1990s. Also the
company launched the WB, a national television network. During the 2000s Warner Bros. continued
its dominance in the entertainment world. 2004 was a very successful year for the company. "Warner

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Groucho Marx's 'Casablanca'
Normally, authors would argue with an objective tone. But it is different in the case of Groucho
Marx. Comedian and film star, Groucho Marx, in his letter, argues to the Warner Brothers to let the
Marx Brothers use the title "Casablanca". Marx uses different diction to help convey a tone and
figurative language such as allusion to convince the Warner Bros. to drop the charges and lawsuits.
Marx appeals to emotion to convince and for the readers to relate and laugh as Marx elaborates his
argument. In his letter, Marx starts by stating on how he did not know Warner Bros. owned the the
name Casablanca; using a sarcastic tone. "For example, up to the time that we contemplated making
a picture, I had no idea that the city of Casablanca belonged exclusively to Warner Brother." By
using sarcastic tone, it implies how Marx is frustrated that Warner would not let the Marx Brother
use the title "Casablanca". The audience can relate and understand how frustrated the author is. To
this, it helps convince the Warner Bros. to drop the lawsuits and let the Marx Brothers use the title.
Then Marx uses an example to mock the Warner Bros. on how supposedly they own the title
Casablanca. "...Ferdinand Balboa Warner, your great–great–great grandfather [...] had stumbled on
the shores of Africa [...] named it Casablanca." Marx uses a mocking tone to show how absurd the
lawsuit is when they do not own title. It helps the Warner Bros. to understand Marx's argument and
convince them to drop the charges. By using a mocking tone, it helps the audience relate and
understand the author's point of view, while laughing at the author's mock. Then Marx moves to a
defensive tone to explain how the Warner Bros. claim that they own the title and giving different
examples of the same names to prove and elaborate on his argument. "You claim you own
Casablanca and that no one else can use that name without your permission." Marx uses a defensive
tone to give his opinion and make his argument more broad. By using a defensive tone, it makes the
Warner understand and listen to his argument. To this, it leads the Warner Bros. to be convinced by
his argument. The audience could relate to the opinion of Marx and agree with the argument of
Marx. Marx,

The Film Industry : The Golden Age Of Hollywood
The film industry, like all industries, is an economical institution that strives to make money out of
their creative projects. In the early years of Hollywood, studios were still trying to figure out
methods that would turn the most profit. Vertical integration allowed companies included in the Big
Five to produce, distribute, and exhibit their own films, but they needed to find a way to maintain
the public's interest of attending theater viewings. The strategy of packaging their actors' "personas"
and selling it to their audiences started to become popular and yielded positive results (VanDerploeg
24). The star system was one of the key economic strategies that helped production companies find
new talent for their movies and helped audiences differentiated movies from competing studios.
While it was primary created to effectively promote their movies, the star system was also the "basis
for a hierarchical division of labour in the Hollywood film industry". This meant that it allowed
Hollywood executives to have power over both their actor's career decisions and their general lives
(Holmes 99). Although all actors were affected by this, women were the main victims of
exploitation and trauma in the work place. Throughout the "Golden Age of Hollywood", actresses
have been highly mistreated by studio executives. Components of the star system left a physical and
emotional toll onto female performers, and it was only through their plight that certain workforce
were developed.

Close USots In Casablanca
In the film Casablanca, there are many extreme close–up shots and zooms, often focused on the
facial expression of characters. These close–up shots show great details of characters face, which
reveal the emotion of a character. For example, when the engines of the plane is starting up, there
are a lot of close–up shots that really demonstrates character's thinking processes. During the scene,
Rick and Ilsa looked toward each other, then Rick turned his head toward Victor, Victor turned to
Ilsa and asked if she is ready. After that, she had another look at Rick, responds with "Yes, I'm
ready." Based on Rick's facial expression, we can say that he is "returning" Ilsa back to Victor, and
he has finalized his decision. At the same time, Ilsa's face tells us that she is accepting this decision,
but still not entirely ready for the final farewell. Scenes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These long shots continues without stopping, moving from a place to another, smooths out the story
by avoiding cutting scenes and thus creates continuity for the story. From the same scene where they
depart from the airport, when Rick announces that Victor and Ilsa will be flying and he will stay, Ilsa
was stunned. Scenes like this create amazing action sequences to help us to focus on the story, and
add extra punches to the movie.
Another good angle that is useful in analyzing this film is the characters roles and their
development, which changes over the course of a narrative. During the narration of Rick's story, his
past was revealed after Ilas's arrival at Casablanca, it is necessary to help emphasize what kind of
person Rick is and how different he was. Captain Louis also took an important role in this story. At
the beginning, he seems like a person who doesn't care about other people, only cares about himself,
but as story goes, he can't hide his feeling to befriend with Rick, finally escapes Casablanca together

In today society different companies go through various contracts on a day to day basis; however, it
is solely up to both companies or parties to ensure that the contract upon entering is in good standing
and there after remains in good binding, As in the case of Prince Vs Warner Brothers. In the
beginning it seems as though the contract was acceptable for both parties, however as the
discrepancies unfold, it became clear that the contract was no longer valid. This created a huge
problem for both parties. It has been observed that the dispute between Prince and Warner Brothers

All his new material that he created after he changed his name, was under his NPG record label.
While he carried out his remaining obligation to Warner Brothers, at every public appearance, Prince
continued to retaliate by writing the word "slave" on his cheek (Orwall, 1995). For a period of time
prince did not play his own music. Benny Medina, VP of A&R for Warner Brothers at the time,
believed that this was apart of his protest against the record label. "Prince was a really unique person
who was not going to be very productive if he was not in a healthy place with the people he had to
deal with. We got it; if you want to go, go! Lets just figure it out", said Benny Medina in a BET
documentary video (BET). In 1997 Prince ended his contract with Warner Brothers. In that same
year he released his last album with the Label entitled Emancipation. In the year 2000, after the
publishing contract with Warner Brothers has ended he legally changed his name back to Prince
(BET).
Parties Interest
It has always been a tradition for record labels to own the masters of the artist sign to the roster;
after all, they are the ones spending millions of dollars to promote and market, as well as distribute
the artist's music. Evidently, Prince disagreed with this notion. Prince did not like the fact that the
labels were able to decide when his album should be

1940's: Film Analysis
There are many factors that lead to how the film industry is today. Over the years there have been
many technological innovations and a developed narrative structure. Hollywood has played a major
role in shaping American culture through the years and continues to do so. American cinema began
as an art of storytelling. In the 1940's it gave Americans an escape from their lives to better, more
exciting lives. People would flood theaters to see Hollywood movies. During this time hundreds of
films were coming out of Hollywood and influence was coming from everyone, creating styles and
perfecting techniques. The Hollywood style involved studios pushing out hundreds of films by mass

narrative. There is normally a person, people, creature or force that obstructs the protagonists known
as the antagonist. There are stakes that put the protagonists at risk that generally increase through the
story. During the rising action the characters will encounter stakes until the crisis which is the
narrative peak where the protagonist is in their greatest jeopardy. The climax is where the
protagonist faces their major obstacle. Once the goal is either gained or lost, it is the revolution,

Mainstream Hollywood Cinema In The 1960s And 1970s
Challenges to Hollywood Cinema Mainstream Hollywood Cinema exhibits a slight decline as other
film movement challenge its constructions and traditions around the 1960s. Mainstream Hollywood
Cinema is characterized by big budget films, a focus on a star or celebrity, continuity editing within
the film, a focus on chronological narrative, and a story that plays out around universal belief and
has a conclusive ending. However, New Wave, New Hollywood, and Third Cinema opposed these
standard constructions and in their own ways offering a different type of viewing experience for
their audiences. Third Cinema is centered on politics and anti–hegemony messages. It has its place
of importance within the various film movements; however, the following essay will focus on the
American and European movements that opposed mainstream Hollywood Cinema in the 1960s and
1970s. The films Breathless (Godard, 1960), Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Fassbinder 1974), and Harold

In a similar fashion to Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Harold and Maude features an unusual relationship
between a young man and an older woman. Instead of praising middle class life with its family–
filled houses and white picket fences as might be seen in mainstream Hollywood, Ashby uses
Harold and Maude to explore these social constructions of it in a dark and humorous way. As for its
technical operations, Harold and Maude uses a great deal of montage to tell the story. While this
isn't strictly non–continuity, it is a departure from the standard establishing shot, and shot–reverser–
shot editing techniques used seen in blockbusters movies and mainstream Hollywood Cinema.
Although Harold and Maude is not necessarily an independent film, it is part of New Hollywood
and it displays a strict turn against the mainstream and a desire to explore fringe stories and

The Impact Of Movies And Hollywood In The 1920's
"You ain't heard nothing yet," is one of the most popular lines from the first talkie ever produced.
That being The Jazz Singer. With this quote, movies were inherently changed forever. Starting from
the beginning, in the 1920's economic prosperity spread like wildfire in America. With that, came
more leisure time for the average person and movies, being a cheap source of entertainment,
boomed along with the stocks. The hotspot for this movie epidemic was in Hollywood, California.
With that being said, movies and Hollywood had a significant impact in the 1920's and modern
times through societal changes and technological advancements. To begin with, some background
information on movies and Hollywood in the 1920's. In the 1920's, movie attendance soared (The
Rise of Hollywood par. 4). As stated in the introduction, with the influx of money in the American
economic system, the average person also had an influx of time on their hands. The normal solution
was to spend that time on entertainment and movies were the perfect way to do that. By the mid–
decade, movie attendance rose to fifty million and only increased from then. The five main movie
studios were Warner Brothers, Paramount, MGM, RKO Radio Pictures, and 20th Century Fox
(Dirks 1). Before these studios were formed, every aspect of making movies was separated into
different companies. The aspects may include filming, editing, or distributing. With the spark of

The Impact Of Sound On The World Of Sound Cinema
Sound is obviously an essential part of cinema, and most couldn't imagine watching any sort of
entertainment without sound. Although how did sounds start and what were some major
advancements in the world of sound cinema? The introduction of sound to cinema began by a
process known as Phonofilm, created by a man named Lee de Forest and Theodore Case in 1923.
The Phonofilm, which recorded synchronized sound directly onto film, was used to record a variety
of entertainment including vaudeville acts, musical numbers, political speeches and opera singers.
Unfortunately, this sound film didn't last long because it was overshadowed by the sound on disc,
later named the Vitaphone.
The Vitaphone was developed by Western Electrics Bell Laboratories and quickly acquired by
Warner Bros Company in April of 1925. The Warner Brothers film Don Juan, directed by Alan
Crosland, which utilized the first system with synchronized music score and sound effects, first
showcased the Vitaphone. Using the Vitaphone, Warner Brothers went on to produce over 100 short
films during the mid 1920's. In 1927, The Jazz Singer was released, which was essentially a silent
picture with Vitaphone score and the occasional episodes of synchronized singing and speech.
Although the Vitaphone seemed like a revolutionary concept opening a whole new market of
cinema, it became apparent that recording on film would be much more convenient.
Sound on disk had been in the tweaking process throughout the early

Baby Face Film Analysis
Baby Face, as originally produced, edited, and released in 1933, gave rise to a fierce controversy
regarding its content that perfectly exemplifies the relationship that existed then between studios,
producers, and the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA). In retrospect,
the film seems to capture the struggle between creative effort and censorship during the Golden Age
of Hollywood. The Hays Code was the product of a rapidly changing era; a time when new
technology allowed for provocative ideas to spread as a form of entertainment. What Baby Face did
was to display the contradictions inherent in the motion picture industry and help elucidate the need
for control over production standards. The Production Code Administration emerged in 1934. It was
the organic outgrowth of a backlash to immorality in film perceived since the 1920's (Gomery &
Pafort–Overduin, 2011). As an entertainment medium, film was revolutionary: all of the sudden,
vivid snippets of life could reach a mass audience. Not long after motion pictures enthralled the
country, producers began to recognize the opportunity to attract larger audiences – and increase
profits – by filming stories involving provocative subjects and thus stimulating the people's sense of
wonder (Gomery & Pafort–Overduin, 2011). A natural outgrowth of this trend was the increasingly
transgressive nature of motion pictures. In an age characterized by both economic and social
progress, a backlash against new ideas

Marxism : An Overview Of Marxism
Marxism: An Overview Marxism is comparable to Capitalism. Like Capitalism, Marxism strives for
the profit–motive. Capitalism is driven by the continuous desire to increase capital (Ott & Mack,
2014). This means that every service exists only to produce profit. Marxism on the other hand
produces two classes. The first are owners, and the second are workers. In the case of this paper we
will simplify this and categorize the workers as consumers. The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a prime
example of Capitalism. As entertaining and popular as the show is, there are a lot of factors that play
into the production of the show. We will now examine these factors in depth.
Concentration and Conglomeration
When watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show, it's hard to realize all the powerhouses, money, and
subsidiaries that go on behind the scenes. The Ellen DeGeneres Show debuted on September 8, 2003

by Time Warner. Time Warner is one of "The Big Six" media giants in the United States. They rank
number 156 on Forbes World's Biggest Public Companies (Forbes, 2015). Under the broadcasting
and cable industry, Time Warner came in third, just behind Comcast and Disney. Time Warner is

The Decline of Classical Hollywood Films
Introduction
The decline of Classical Hollywood films came after the Hollywood Antitrust Case of 1948 as
television audiences dwindled in the wave of television popularity and accessibility and the taste and
interests of viewers which in turn ended the monopoly of Hollywood Studios. To combat this
Hollywood Studios turned it's back on the origins of its creation and headed in a new direction. An
era of film–school educated, liberal filmmakers began in Hollywood where the directors of the films
began to express their personal view and creative insights. These directors and new age film–makers
were heavily influence by the work of the Italian Neo Realism and French New Wave this saw
American film change drastically from its previous eras of filming techniques and saw a whole new
era take over. Many changes happened following the 1948 lawsuit. Which saw the structure of
American cinema completely change and brought a new era which defined the production of films
and had a huge influence on the progression of film. With this, along with the influence of Italian
neo realism and the French new wave, American Cinema grew and grew from Classical styles to
against the grain alternative movies which then flourished into the blockbuster industry those born
in the 80's and 90's grew up with.

The Studio System Essay
The Studio System
Key point about the studio system could be:
Despite being one of the biggest industries in the United States, indeed the World, the internal
workings of the 'dream factory' that is Hollywood is little understood outside the business.
The Hollywood Studio System: A History is the first book to describe and analyse the complete
development, classic operation, and reinvention of the global corporate entities which produce and
distribute most of the films we watch.
Starting in 1920, Adolph Zukor, head of Paramount Pictures, over the decade of the 1920s helped to

The following essay will examine how these changes took place, and what impact it had on the film
making industry in America. We shall also examine how the system relates to the current production
methods used in film making. The main issues raised within the text will be summarised concisely
within the conclusion. Before a film reaches the cinema screen, and its audience it must go through
a three stage process. Firstly and most obviously it has to be produced, following this it must then be
distributed, and finally exhibited. Before the introduction of the studio system in the 1920s all of
these processes were controlled separately. Although this gave the makers of films, such as directors
and producers, room to express their creativity it placed a heavy constraint upon the amount of
movies that could be made, and financial profits. However, despite Hollywood's uneasy birth, by the
1920s it had become one of the worlds leading film producers (Dirks, 2002). This was largely due to
the introduction of the producer, or studio syste

A Hint of Humor, a Dash of Cinnamon... in the Legal...
In the year 1947, legal conflict arose between Warner Brothers Studio and the Marx Brothers. It
began when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their upcoming films, A Night in
Casablanca. When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive rights to the name "Casablanca," Groucho
Marx sent a letter to Warner Brothers in response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a
brilliant and clever combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers's assertion.
Throughout his letter, Marx uses his ever–present wit to dissolve any actual or imagined hostility in
his addressee. For example, in one section, he says "I am sure that the average movie fan could learn
tin time to distinguish between Ingrid Birdman [the female star of ... Show more content on

Marx's argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he shows that the
idea of owning "Casablanca" is absurd in the same way that owning the word "brothers" is absurd.
His logic pierces through any uncertainty and effectively explains his point. He later arrives at the
conclusion that "this attempt to prevent us from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret–faced
shyster, serving a brief apprenticeship in your legal department" (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference
as valid, logical reason for Warner Brothers's interference. As such, he attempts to show the
irrationality of any hindrance to the Marx Brothers' planned film title. While Groucho Marx does
have a number of potent and valid arguments, some poorly planned passages slightly diminish the
overall effectiveness of his letter. A recurring issue, Marx's tendency for rambling distracts the
reader from his main goal. His references to Burbank Studio, "Old Man Burbank," and Harry
Appelbaum seem to have no pertinence to the intended subject. However, these are not major issues
and can be ignored in order to find Marx's true purpose. Even more powerful than either comedy or
logic alone are instances in which both of these elements are used together in harmony with each
other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this comment: "Apparently, there is more than one way of
conquering a city and holding it as your own. For example, up to the

Casablanca’s Liberal Criticism Essay
The film Casablanca will always remain an American classic. American people critiqued it as a high
quality film over a time period, defining a classic and still today Casablanca remains a top American
movie. Michael Curtiz, the director, shows World War II on the home front, using the setting to
transfer the view point. The famous and popular Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul
Henreid play the complex love triangle that leads the film to the stories purpose and theme.
Casablanca illustrates liberal criticism through a hometown war rebellion setting, the nationalistic
view points, and true love's tribulations. The German invasion brings the Casablanca people

Renault, the French sheriff police officer, works with Strasser, the German general. Renault rarely
takes him seriously and complies to do whatever Strasser desires. For example, Strasser tells
Renault that he overestimates 'blundering Americans.' Renault responds," Do not underestimate
American blundering, they blundered all the way into Berlin in 1918." The German general quickly
changes the subject. Renault's and Rick's friendship is where the small town humor occurs, another
example displaying the audiences sympathetic views.
Casablanca's love afflictions render that true love equals self–sacrifice. The married Victor and Ilsa
(Bergman) get separated when Victor gets arrested for leading an underground rebellion. Ilsa
receives word that he was killed in a concentration camp. Then the day she is to leave with new
found love, Rick, she obtains information that Victor lives and leaves Rick without reason. Rick
remains bitter and cynical, making it clear that he, "don't stick his neck out for no one," and, "
isolationism is his foreign policy." He remains cold towards everyone when he finds the truth behind
why she left him and shows no interest helping them escape Casablanca although he has the power.
When Rick and Victor speak, Victor only asks for one exit visa. When Rick asks him if he really
loves her that much, Victor responds honestly yes, well knowing that Ilsa and Rick

Hollywood Influence On Hollywood
Movies and celebrities are a very important part of our culture today. Around the world, Hollywood
is known to be the leading industry in filmmaking along with Bollywood and Nollywood. However,
let's focus on the American movie industry Hollywood. Globally, Hollywood is used as an
inspiration for other filmmaking industries. As influential as Hollywood is, there are always going to
be opinions of other nations in which many believe that Hollywood has created a sense of "anti–
Americanism". Many believe Hollywood is a perpetrator of this, but that is not true. Hollywood
portrays who Americans are and what their culture is inspiring many countries to mimic them in; the

Around the world today, everything is influenced by popular culture, and popular culture is greatly
influenced by the United States. It's no surprise that Hollywood is well known globally because the
best way to share popular culture is through movies and music. As previously stated, popular culture
has been disliked at times, which also means Hollywood is disliked as well. The reason for this is
because many countries think there's too much nudity and too much violence in the movies that are
made in Hollywood. However, America has persevered because in order to be the best, one has to
deal with criticism. American media continues to do very well abroad, especially Hollywood
products that are known to be "a key engine of our economy". Without it, our economy probably
would not be on the top (Bronk). In order for Hollywood products to do well abroad they need to be
liked, and according to our economy people around the world like Hollywood a lot. It's not the
dislike for American cultures that causes countries to ban American films from their countries. For
many, it's because of the huge cultural gap that exists. According to Iranian National Media Council,
"the theme of the film does not fit with our cultural values". For example, in Iran, some of the
aspects of a Hollywood movie do not fit their cultural values, especially sex, and nudity

The Ever Changing Field Of Film Essay
The Ever–Changing Field of Film The world of film has changed dramatically over the years and
will likely continue to change along with technological and professional developments. Like many
modern innovations, film has changed substantially over a rather short period of time, from black
and white movies to modernized color films. Still, it is impressive to think how far film has come,
and looking back into the near past affords an appreciation of the technology that no longer exists.
Thus my viewing experiences towards film have tremendously changed in recent years as I have
become more and more immersed in its world. I am not old enough to recall silent movies, but I
most certainly remember black and white movies that my parents used to watch on TV. In the 1980s,
I always wondered why some broadcasts were black and white, especially when I switched to
another channel that had color broadcasting. Personally, the only black and white TV show that I
used to watch was The Three Stooges (Ray McCarey, 1934). I enjoyed watching this show for its
funny slapstick action; however I did not enjoy watching it in black and white, as my focus was
primarily on the main characters and not the scenery or objects around them. Several years later, this
sort of viewing became a thing of the past because black and white films became less accessible in
either television or movies. Conversely, the advent of computer–generated imagery, known as CGI,
has changed the

Visual Elements In The Film Casablanca
The film, Casablanca, focuses on Rick, who faces lost love, honor and duty, self–sacrifice, and
romance, all within a world currently filled with chaos. The bar scene, where Rick drinks alone after
his club closes, represents the sadness he feels after encountering an old acquaintance – Ilsa Lund,
his former lover. During the scene, Sam plays "As Time Goes by" again, the searchlight circles
around the club, and Rick thinks about the past, just before Ilsa comes to see and talk to him. The
mise–en–scène of the bar scene following Laszlo and Ilsa leaving Rick's nightclub illustrates the
shift of Rick's former character to the man the audience currently sees.
Casablanca contains brilliant visual elements. It is a romantic drama that takes place during World
War II, in a city controlled by France called Casablanca. The city is filled with refugees who are
trying to escape to the United States, dealers selling letters of transit, and French and German
officials. In the beginning of the bar scene, Rick says, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the
world, she walks into mine." This incorporates the idea of coincidence in the film. In an essay
written by Bordwell and Thompson, "The later in the film a coincidence occurs, the weaker it is; and
it is very unlikely that the story will be resolved by coincidence" (13). It explains how ... Show more

Shining a Light on the Dark Corners of Film Noir Hollywood has had a deep influence on cinema
across the world since the early 20th century. The American cinema soon became the most dominant
force in an emerging industry. Since the 1920s, the American film industry has grossed more annual
income than any other film industry across the world. The history of modern cinema is known to be
separated into four main periods: Silent Film Era, Classical Hollywood Cinema, New Hollywood
and the contemporary period. Modern cinema was shaped and inspired by many movie genres
throughout the years and often brings back trends and techniques used years ago.
During the Classical Hollywood Cinema, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This effect leaves deep sharp edged shadows in comparison to soft lighting conceived by rays of
light being scattered in different directions. This sharp and defined change is different from the soft
lights of Classical Hollywood cinematography. For example, instead of having a soft fuzzy
silhouette of a person, Film Noir has that sharp and dark silhouette emphasizing important aspects.
Hard lighting can be achieved by using frosted bulbs or compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs
have a light output of almost a thousand lumens. The bulb diffuses a very cold and strong light. A
cheaper way of achieving the same results would be using a single uncovered incandescent light
bulb. Natural daylight is also great for creating hard shadows. Hard lighting and sharp edged person
define the Film Noir. While soft lighting is only used for glamourizing strong female characters.
Backlighting is also a technique which is used. With backlighting the subject is separated from the
background as it creates a sense of depth in the scene. It occurs when the light is directed at the
camera from behind the object or the person present in the shot. This causes the figure to appear
either in semi–darkness, in a silhouette, or even highlighted. It masks facial expressions and can
even add a mysterious tone to the character. One of the hallmarks of Film Noir is the intensity of the

Affordable And Reliable Home Recording Equipment
Affordable and reliable home recording equipment has led to a revolution in the way that some
albums are recorded these days. It is no longer necessary for many artists to hire an expensive 48–
track studio when they can inexpensively duplicate many of the same production values by using
software programs like Pro Tools (Llommen, 2010). 30 years ago the thought of an artist recording
an album with there own financial backing was unheard of. With advancement in technology over
time the impossible has suddenly become possible. Having a traditional record deal was a necessity
in being able to record and release your music this meaning artists were locked down to labels for
years leaving very little control to the artist, however times have ... Show more content on

The Master License deal is when the artist "leases" the license to their recordings to a label for a
fixed amount of time and therefore the label has a vested interest in the record and how its promoted
and distributed. The label will pay for the records and the means of distribution. The return to the
artist on these types of deals tends to be much higher. Master license deals are very common
amongst "indie" labels such as Inertia. It is common for an artist who funds their own recordings to
push for a license deal, this is less risk for the label as they have the final product and know what
they are investing their money into. It's also great for the artist as the artist has the final product,
which they had total artistic control over without having the pressure and input of a label telling
them what to do. The term within a master license deal tends to be much shorter than that of a
traditional record deal, it will apply only for the rights to that master for a fixed period of time and
after this time full rights and ownership of the master belongs back with the artist. There is no
advance in a master license deal and therefore the artist does not owe the label any money for
recording the album as the artist would have fully paid for the recording themselves. Dissecting a

The Golden Age of Hollywood
The Golden Age of Hollywood was a time when Hollywood hit its peak successfully and
economically, starting with the late 1920s, and met its decline due to corruption in the late 1950s.
One would ask the question: "Where did the name Hollywood come from?" The name came from
Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife, Daeida, who were owners of a small ranch west of Los
Angeles. According to u–s–history.com, "Daeida, who, while on a train trip east met a woman that
described her country home in Ohio, that had been named for the Dutch settlement of Hollywood.
Liking the name, Daeida christened their ranch 'Hollywood,' upon her return." (History of
Hollywood, California) Movies during this time period became a vital form of entertainment for all
Americans during this time period. By the 1910s, Hollywood was combined into its neighboring city
Los Angeles, and many motion–picture studios began to open. Moviemakers rushed to Hollywood,
and competition started to become widespread between directors and producers. By 1910, the first
motion picture was made in Hollywood, titled In Old California, and soon enough, Los Angeles
became second to New York in producing films also because of it's quintessential weather for
movies to be made in all year long during this time. As Hollywood began to industrialize,
filmmakers began to work on the image of a "star"; they would continuously use these highly–paid
actors in order to achieve a form of comfort for the general audience of the movies. Seeing

skewed by an obsolete specific conviction framework, there are no standards or rules to rating a
specific motion picture, and the entire thing is simply pointless these days.
In 1922, the "huge three" film studios established the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of
America, headed by Will H. Feeds. Later in 1930 they peaked Motion Picture Production Code, also
called the Hays Code. This framework put the films we watch into two classes,

displayed in nice attire fitted for those who are quite wealthy. Also, the environment the characters

Prince Rogers Nelson Biography
Prince Rogers Nelson, the artist known as Prince who Thursday became "formerly" with a
devastating finality at only 57, was so gifted it barely can be believed, let alone described.
Thankfully, it hardly needs to be, because anyone who wasn't frightened off by his flagrancies and
ambiguities could tell that this was a talent of the kind that rearranges what culture can do and what
a human can be–the kind possessed, for instance, by two artists who predeceased him, his
contemporary Michael Jackson and his elder by a dozen years David Bowie, and a very short list of
other figures in pop–music history.
He was one of the finest ever pop singers, one of the most incredible guitarists (the anecdote in
which Eric Clapton once replied to the question "What's it like to be the greatest guitarist alive?" by
saying "I don't know, ask Prince" is probably apocryphal but, on a higher plane, definitely correct),

The American Motion Picture Industry
PART I – IDENTIFICATIONS: SUBSECTION A: i. Eadweard Muybridge: The story of the
American motion picture industry begins with the eccentric 'photographic artist', Eadweard
Muybridge. In 1872, Eadweard Muybridge was sought out by former governor of California and
railroad tycoon, Leland Stanford, because of his expertise with the camera. Stanford thought that if
Muybridge could capture equine motion in a series of photographs, it would be possible to discern
whether or not all four of a horse's legs were simultaneously aloft at any point when running.
However, initial series of photographs taken by Muybridge was unsuccessful in resolving Stanford's
query. However, in 1877, Stanford decided to re–enlist Muybridge for a more scientific approach to
the problem of equine motion. The second time around, Muybridge used twelve electrically operated
cameras capable of taking photographs in succession. The product of Stanford and Muybridge's
experiment, twelve instantaneous photographs of a horse in motion, contributed to our
understanding of animal locomotion and showed images could be blurred together by the brain to
produce motion. This discovery set the stage for the invention of the motion picture camera and
inspired Muybridge's later technological innovation, the zoopraxiscope, a basic motion operated
projection device. ii. WKL Dickson: Oftentimes forgotten, WKL Dickson was the colleague of

as a method to help get across themes and motifs. Dialog could now be heard in movies, instead of
having to be read on a blank background. One of the first and most influence German films to

in 1930, and tells of the story of a respected professor who in an attempt to catch his student from

We could not have the films we do today, or at any point without advancing and improving the
technology in the industry. It all started with photography and then came the Kinetoscope, then the
Vitascope, then improvements onto the camera, 30mm cameras, 70mm, and Vitaphones. All these
advances happened within a 30 year period which is quite remarkable. These advances in
technology impacted the history of film forever. Without the innovation to put sound in film,
filmmakers would have been limited to what the can do with their characters. After so long it would
have got sick of seeing very identical silent films over and over again. This also allowed for music
to become a big part in film. Music helps the audiences understand what kind of emotion they
should feel during a film, and during a silent film you cannot achieve that next level of emotion.
Also by putting sound into film this allowed the audience to hear a character speak. Being able to
hear a character talk lets the audience get more invested into the character. The character on screen
being silent would draw a line that the audiences always knew they were in a movie, but now with
the advanced technology hearing the character speak and interact with others get people more

The Ownership Of Time Warner

  • 1. The Ownership of Time Warner In 50's, there are over 500 media companies in America, but through many integrations, there are only 6 major media institutions in America and they dominate nearly 98% of the market in America. "The media monopoly" written by Ben Bagdikian in 1983 criticized that the concentration of the media institution in America is fundamentally anti–democratic. Moreover, In the process of globalisation, people of different countries are becoming "world audiences". The demands for media texts produced by these 6 media institutions are increasing. For example, In Hong Kong, most of the foreign films shown in cinema are produced from Hollywood. And the programmes of the popular paid–TV channels are bought from these 6 major media institution such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the above, it is shown that Time Warner is a very powerful media institution which holds all kind of media. It possibly has great influences in the local US. Firstly, Ben Bagdikian stated that an impressive picture of diversity that there are different kinds of publishing imprints in the market is created. Consumers seem to have many selections. But actually, consumers have limited choices only because many of them are owned by Time Warner and they may consist of similar ideologies of the institution. Consumers are possibly imbued with the ideologies of Time Warner. Secondly, Bagdikian questioned the editorial independence because editors may be required to protect interests of the mother company. For example, a film produced by the studio of Time Warner is commented from the public in both positive and negative sides. the editor or even the executive of the magazines of the Time Warner would concern the interests of the Time Warner. Hence only the positive comments may be selected to inform but neglect the negative comments in order not to affect the box office. From the above case, the information informed to the public may not reflect the real case. Finally, concentrated media ownership can create strong political influences. The owners of the media institution can also have direct control of over media products in order to create political influence by promoting ideas that enhance their interests. • 5. Warner Brothers And The New Medium Of Radio When the company ran into financial difficulties in the mid–1920s, "It was Sam Warner 's interest in the new medium of radio that led directly to Warner Brothers investing in the Vitaphone." Warner Brothers then, made the first full–length all–talking film, and the first all–talking colour film in the 1920s. Warner Brothers is a fully integrated, broad–based entertainment company, it is a global leader in all forms of entertainment and their related businesses across all emerging and current media and platforms. The multicultural, broad–based company is positioned at the forefront of every aspect of the entertainment industry from feature films, television and home entertainment production and worldwide distribution to Blu–ray and DVD, animation, digital distribution, comic books, brand licensing and product and broadcasting. This is one of the most admirable, diversified and successful motion picture and television studios in the world. This all begin when the four brothers (Sam, Albert, Jack L and Harry Warner) embraced their up–and–coming movie company on April 4, 1923. Harry, the eldest of them all was the president of the company and ran its headquarters in New York City, Albert, was its head of sales and distribution. Jack and Sam managed the studio in Hollywood. Before the up–and–coming of the Warner Brothers, they were in the movie business way before the Vitaphone idea. • 7. Studio System In Hollywood In essence one could describe the Studio system as a particular method of filming, where the studios in hollywood were in complete control of the production and distribution of a particular film (Lewis 2008). During the Golden Age of film the studio system was at its peak. Five major companies dominated the world of movies, they all were conglomerates that owned the production, distribution of their films. In the Golden Age, censorship was also at the forefront of the studio system. Originally, censorship was determined by local boards, so began the self censhipric policies and procedures of the hollywood world. • 9. The Film Industry Of Crisis By Frank O ' Hara Introduction A a result of my keen interest in my Media Studies Course I have chosen to look for a poem that highlights the positive and negative viewpoints on different issues surrounding the film industry. The poem I have found, "The Film Industry In Crisis" by Frank O'Hara in 1957, comments on the choice audiences must make between "Glorious Silver Screen" or to the American LEgion or the Catholic church. O'Hara also makes a brief reference to "give credit where it's due", which has lead me to look further into the impacts of Illegal streaming of film. I also wonder about how the viewing experience has been affected by external factors throughout history and what the impacts of developing technology have been on the film industry as a whole. How have changes to technology, including legal streaming sites, influenced the consumption of films? The way films are being made has significantly affected the way films are consumed with the introduction of full colour viewing to the increase in resolution and frame rate of film as a result of digitalisation of film in the early 2000's. Access to entertainment has also changed with audiences shifting from traditional cinema to smaller more readily accessible methods. Through the early 1900's cinema ticket sales in the US remained steady, around 80–90 million sales annually (CyberCollege©). After the introduction of television in 1929, ticket sales began dropping and by the time the 1950's arrived ticket sales had dropped to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ice-T & Time Warner Case Clifton Smith Business Ethics Nov. 1, 2012 Ice–T and Time Warner Case Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Ice T 's Introduction: "This next record is dedicated to some personal friends of mine, the LAPD. Killing policemen is a good thing, that is the plain meaning of the words, and no larger understanding of a neglected culture, the rage of the streets or anything else can explain it away. As in much of today 's popular music, the line between performer and performance is purposely blurred. These are political sermons clearly intended to endorse the sentiments being expressed Time Warner states, "We stand for creative freedom. We believe that the worth of what an artist or journalist has to say does not depend on pre–approval from a government official or a corporate censor." Of course Ice–T has the right to say whatever he wants. But that doesn 't require any company to provide him an outlet. And it doesn 't relieve a company of responsibility for the messages it chooses to promote. Judgment is not censorship. Many an anguished cry goes unrecorded. This one was recorded, and promoted, because a successful artist under contract wanted to record it. There is nothing wrong with making money, but a company cannot take the money and run from the responsibility. No commercial enterprise need agree with every word that appears under its corporate imprimatur. Time Warner intends to be 'a global force for encouraging the confrontation of ideas,' but a policy of allowing diverse viewpoints is not a moral free pass. • 13. Warner Brothers Research Paper When most people think of movies certain things come in mind. One of those things could be certain logos. One of the most iconic logos in not only just the movie world, but the whole entertainment world is the Warner Brothers logo. What a lot of people may not know is that that logo represent one of the most successful entertainment companies of all time. Warner brothers is a division of Time Warner and is one of the "Big Six" major American film studios along with Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, and Universal. Warner Brothers was started by a group of brothers named Harry, Albert, Jack, and Sam Warner. They emigrated to Canada from Poland when they were young. The brothers bought a movie projector and soon got into the movie theatre business. They opened their first theatre in 1903 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. "One of the first pictures they ... • 15. The Rhetorical Analysis Of Groucho Marx's 'Casablanca' Normally, authors would argue with an objective tone. But it is different in the case of Groucho Marx. Comedian and film star, Groucho Marx, in his letter, argues to the Warner Brothers to let the Marx Brothers use the title "Casablanca". Marx uses different diction to help convey a tone and figurative language such as allusion to convince the Warner Bros. to drop the charges and lawsuits. Marx appeals to emotion to convince and for the readers to relate and laugh as Marx elaborates his argument. In his letter, Marx starts by stating on how he did not know Warner Bros. owned the the name Casablanca; using a sarcastic tone. "For example, up to the time that we contemplated making a picture, I had no idea that the city of Casablanca belonged exclusively to Warner Brother." By using sarcastic tone, it implies how Marx is frustrated that Warner would not let the Marx Brother use the title "Casablanca". The audience can relate and understand how frustrated the author is. To this, it helps convince the Warner Bros. to drop the lawsuits and let the Marx Brothers use the title. Then Marx uses an example to mock the Warner Bros. on how supposedly they own the title Casablanca. "...Ferdinand Balboa Warner, your great–great–great grandfather [...] had stumbled on the shores of Africa [...] named it Casablanca." Marx uses a mocking tone to show how absurd the lawsuit is when they do not own title. It helps the Warner Bros. to understand Marx's argument and convince them to drop the charges. By using a mocking tone, it helps the audience relate and understand the author's point of view, while laughing at the author's mock. Then Marx moves to a defensive tone to explain how the Warner Bros. claim that they own the title and giving different examples of the same names to prove and elaborate on his argument. "You claim you own Casablanca and that no one else can use that name without your permission." Marx uses a defensive tone to give his opinion and make his argument more broad. By using a defensive tone, it makes the Warner understand and listen to his argument. To this, it leads the Warner Bros. to be convinced by his argument. The audience could relate to the opinion of Marx and agree with the argument of Marx. Marx, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Film Industry : The Golden Age Of Hollywood The film industry, like all industries, is an economical institution that strives to make money out of their creative projects. In the early years of Hollywood, studios were still trying to figure out methods that would turn the most profit. Vertical integration allowed companies included in the Big Five to produce, distribute, and exhibit their own films, but they needed to find a way to maintain the public's interest of attending theater viewings. The strategy of packaging their actors' "personas" and selling it to their audiences started to become popular and yielded positive results (VanDerploeg 24). The star system was one of the key economic strategies that helped production companies find new talent for their movies and helped audiences differentiated movies from competing studios. While it was primary created to effectively promote their movies, the star system was also the "basis for a hierarchical division of labour in the Hollywood film industry". This meant that it allowed Hollywood executives to have power over both their actor's career decisions and their general lives (Holmes 99). Although all actors were affected by this, women were the main victims of exploitation and trauma in the work place. Throughout the "Golden Age of Hollywood", actresses have been highly mistreated by studio executives. Components of the star system left a physical and emotional toll onto female performers, and it was only through their plight that certain workforce were developed. ... • 19. Close USots In Casablanca In the film Casablanca, there are many extreme close–up shots and zooms, often focused on the facial expression of characters. These close–up shots show great details of characters face, which reveal the emotion of a character. For example, when the engines of the plane is starting up, there are a lot of close–up shots that really demonstrates character's thinking processes. During the scene, Rick and Ilsa looked toward each other, then Rick turned his head toward Victor, Victor turned to Ilsa and asked if she is ready. After that, she had another look at Rick, responds with "Yes, I'm ready." Based on Rick's facial expression, we can say that he is "returning" Ilsa back to Victor, and he has finalized his decision. At the same time, Ilsa's face tells us that she is accepting this decision, but still not entirely ready for the final farewell. Scenes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These long shots continues without stopping, moving from a place to another, smooths out the story by avoiding cutting scenes and thus creates continuity for the story. From the same scene where they depart from the airport, when Rick announces that Victor and Ilsa will be flying and he will stay, Ilsa was stunned. Scenes like this create amazing action sequences to help us to focus on the story, and add extra punches to the movie. Another good angle that is useful in analyzing this film is the characters roles and their development, which changes over the course of a narrative. During the narration of Rick's story, his past was revealed after Ilas's arrival at Casablanca, it is necessary to help emphasize what kind of person Rick is and how different he was. Captain Louis also took an important role in this story. At the beginning, he seems like a person who doesn't care about other people, only cares about himself, but as story goes, he can't hide his feeling to befriend with Rick, finally escapes Casablanca together with ... All his new material that he created after he changed his name, was under his NPG record label. While he carried out his remaining obligation to Warner Brothers, at every public appearance, Prince continued to retaliate by writing the word "slave" on his cheek (Orwall, 1995). For a period of time prince did not play his own music. Benny Medina, VP of A&R for Warner Brothers at the time, believed that this was apart of his protest against the record label. "Prince was a really unique person who was not going to be very productive if he was not in a healthy place with the people he had to deal with. We got it; if you want to go, go! Lets just figure it out", said Benny Medina in a BET documentary video (BET). In 1997 Prince ended his contract with Warner Brothers. In that same year he released his last album with the Label entitled Emancipation. In the year 2000, after the publishing contract with Warner Brothers has ended he legally changed his name back to Prince (BET). Hollywood has played a major role in shaping American culture through the years and continues to do so. American cinema began as an art of storytelling. In the 1940's it gave Americans an escape from their lives to better, more exciting lives. People would flood theaters to see Hollywood movies. Mainstream Hollywood Cinema In The 1960s And 1970s Challenges to Hollywood Cinema Mainstream Hollywood Cinema exhibits a slight decline as other film movement challenge its constructions and traditions around the 1960s. Mainstream Hollywood Cinema is characterized by big budget films, a focus on a star or celebrity, continuity editing within the film, a focus on chronological narrative, and a story that plays out around universal belief and has a conclusive ending. However, New Wave, New Hollywood, and Third Cinema opposed these standard constructions and in their own ways offering a different type of viewing experience for their audiences. Third Cinema is centered on politics and anti–hegemony messages. It has its place of importance within the various film movements; however, the following essay will focus on the American and European movements that opposed mainstream Hollywood Cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. Instead of praising middle class life with its family– filled houses and white picket fences as might be seen in mainstream Hollywood, Ashby uses Harold and Maude to explore these social constructions of it in a dark and humorous way. As for its technical operations, Harold and Maude uses a great deal of montage to tell the story. While this isn't strictly non–continuity, it is a departure from the standard establishing shot, and shot–reverser– shot editing techniques used seen in blockbusters movies and mainstream Hollywood Cinema. • 27. The Impact Of Movies And Hollywood In The 1920's "You ain't heard nothing yet," is one of the most popular lines from the first talkie ever produced. That being The Jazz Singer. With this quote, movies were inherently changed forever. Starting from the beginning, in the 1920's economic prosperity spread like wildfire in America. With that, came more leisure time for the average person and movies, being a cheap source of entertainment, boomed along with the stocks. The hotspot for this movie epidemic was in Hollywood, California. With that being said, movies and Hollywood had a significant impact in the 1920's and modern times through societal changes and technological advancements. To begin with, some background information on movies and Hollywood in the 1920's. In the 1920's, movie attendance soared (The Rise of Hollywood par. 4). As stated in the introduction, with the influx of money in the American economic system, the average person also had an influx of time on their hands. The normal solution was to spend that time on entertainment and movies were the perfect way to do that. By the mid– decade, movie attendance rose to fifty million and only increased from then. The five main movie studios were Warner Brothers, Paramount, MGM, RKO Radio Pictures, and 20th Century Fox (Dirks 1). • 29. The Impact Of Sound On The World Of Sound Cinema Sound is obviously an essential part of cinema, and most couldn't imagine watching any sort of entertainment without sound. Although how did sounds start and what were some major advancements in the world of sound cinema? The introduction of sound to cinema began by a process known as Phonofilm, created by a man named Lee de Forest and Theodore Case in 1923. The Phonofilm, which recorded synchronized sound directly onto film, was used to record a variety of entertainment including vaudeville acts, musical numbers, political speeches and opera singers. Unfortunately, this sound film didn't last long because it was overshadowed by the sound on disc, later named the Vitaphone. The Vitaphone was developed by Western Electrics Bell Laboratories and quickly acquired by Warner Bros Company in April of 1925. The Warner Brothers film Don Juan, directed by Alan Crosland, which utilized the first system with synchronized music score and sound effects, first showcased the Vitaphone. Using the Vitaphone, Warner Brothers went on to produce over 100 short films during the mid 1920's. In 1927, The Jazz Singer was released, which was essentially a silent picture with Vitaphone score and the occasional episodes of synchronized singing and speech. Although the Vitaphone seemed like a revolutionary concept opening a whole new market of cinema, it became apparent that recording on film would be much more convenient. • 31. Baby Face Film Analysis Baby Face, as originally produced, edited, and released in 1933, gave rise to a fierce controversy regarding its content that perfectly exemplifies the relationship that existed then between studios, producers, and the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA). In retrospect, the film seems to capture the struggle between creative effort and censorship during the Golden Age of Hollywood. The Hays Code was the product of a rapidly changing era; a time when new technology allowed for provocative ideas to spread as a form of entertainment. What Baby Face did was to display the contradictions inherent in the motion picture industry and help elucidate the need for control over production standards. The Production Code Administration emerged in 1934. It was the organic outgrowth of a backlash to immorality in film perceived since the 1920's (Gomery & Pafort–Overduin, 2011). As an entertainment medium, film was revolutionary: all of the sudden, vivid snippets of life could reach a mass audience. Not long after motion pictures enthralled the country, producers began to recognize the opportunity to attract larger audiences – and increase profits – by filming stories involving provocative subjects and thus stimulating the people's sense of wonder (Gomery & Pafort–Overduin, 2011). A natural outgrowth of this trend was the increasingly transgressive nature of motion pictures. In an age characterized by both economic and social progress, a backlash against new ideas ... • 33. Marxism : An Overview Of Marxism Marxism: An Overview Marxism is comparable to Capitalism. Like Capitalism, Marxism strives for the profit–motive. Capitalism is driven by the continuous desire to increase capital (Ott & Mack, 2014). This means that every service exists only to produce profit. Marxism on the other hand produces two classes. The first are owners, and the second are workers. In the case of this paper we will simplify this and categorize the workers as consumers. The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a prime example of Capitalism. As entertaining and popular as the show is, there are a lot of factors that play into the production of the show. We will now examine these factors in depth. The Decline of Classical Hollywood Films Introduction The decline of Classical Hollywood films came after the Hollywood Antitrust Case of 1948 as television audiences dwindled in the wave of television popularity and accessibility and the taste and interests of viewers which in turn ended the monopoly of Hollywood Studios. To combat this Hollywood Studios turned it's back on the origins of its creation and headed in a new direction. An era of film–school educated, liberal filmmakers began in Hollywood where the directors of the films began to express their personal view and creative insights. These directors and new age film–makers were heavily influence by the work of the Italian Neo Realism and French New Wave this saw American film change drastically from its previous eras of filming techniques and saw a whole new era take over. Many changes happened following the 1948 lawsuit. Which saw the structure of American cinema completely change and brought a new era which defined the production of films and had a huge influence on the progression of film. With this, along with the influence of Italian neo realism and the French new wave, American Cinema grew and grew from Classical styles to against the grain alternative movies which then flourished into the blockbuster industry those born in the 80's and 90's grew up with. We shall also examine how the system relates to the current production methods used in film making. The main issues raised within the text will be summarised concisely within the conclusion. Before a film reaches the cinema screen, and its audience it must go through a three stage process. Firstly and most obviously it has to be produced, following this it must then be distributed, and finally exhibited. Before the introduction of the studio system in the 1920s all of these processes were controlled separately. Although this gave the makers of films, such as directors and producers, room to express their creativity it placed a heavy constraint upon the amount of movies that could be made, and financial profits. However, despite Hollywood's uneasy birth, by the 1920s it had become one of the worlds leading film producers (Dirks, 2002). This was largely due to the introduction of the producer, or studio syste Cinema is a collaborative art so it is difficult to determine the influence of one particular person on a film. • 41. A Hint of Humor, a Dash of Cinnamon... in the Legal... In the year 1947, legal conflict arose between Warner Brothers Studio and the Marx Brothers. It began when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their upcoming films, A Night in Casablanca. When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive rights to the name "Casablanca," Groucho Marx sent a letter to Warner Brothers in response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a brilliant and clever combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers's assertion. Throughout his letter, Marx uses his ever–present wit to dissolve any actual or imagined hostility in his addressee. For example, in one section, he says "I am sure that the average movie fan could learn tin time to distinguish between Ingrid Birdman [the female star of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marx's argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he shows that the idea of owning "Casablanca" is absurd in the same way that owning the word "brothers" is absurd. His logic pierces through any uncertainty and effectively explains his point. He later arrives at the conclusion that "this attempt to prevent us from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret–faced shyster, serving a brief apprenticeship in your legal department" (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference as valid, logical reason for Warner Brothers's interference. As such, he attempts to show the irrationality of any hindrance to the Marx Brothers' planned film title. While Groucho Marx does have a number of potent and valid arguments, some poorly planned passages slightly diminish the overall effectiveness of his letter. A recurring issue, Marx's tendency for rambling distracts the reader from his main goal. His references to Burbank Studio, "Old Man Burbank," and Harry Appelbaum seem to have no pertinence to the intended subject. However, these are not major issues and can be ignored in order to find Marx's true purpose. Even more powerful than either comedy or logic alone are instances in which both of these elements are used together in harmony with each other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this comment: "Apparently, there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your own. For example, up to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Like many modern innovations, film has changed substantially over a rather short period of time, from black and white movies to modernized color films. Still, it is impressive to think how far film has come, and looking back into the near past affords an appreciation of the technology that no longer exists. Thus my viewing experiences towards film have tremendously changed in recent years as I have become more and more immersed in its world. I am not old enough to recall silent movies, but I most certainly remember black and white movies that my parents used to watch on TV. In the 1980s, I always wondered why some broadcasts were black and white, especially when I switched to another channel that had color broadcasting. Personally, the only black and white TV show that I used to watch was The Three Stooges (Ray McCarey, 1934). I enjoyed watching this show for its funny slapstick action; however I did not enjoy watching it in black and white, as my focus was primarily on the main characters and not the scenery or objects around them. Several years later, this sort of viewing became a thing of the past because black and white films became less accessible in either television or movies. The bar scene, where Rick drinks alone after his club closes, represents the sadness he feels after encountering an old acquaintance – Ilsa Lund, his former lover. During the scene, Sam plays "As Time Goes by" again, the searchlight circles around the club, and Rick thinks about the past, just before Ilsa comes to see and talk to him. The mise–en–scène of the bar scene following Laszlo and Ilsa leaving Rick's nightclub illustrates the shift of Rick's former character to the man the audience currently sees. The city is filled with refugees who are trying to escape to the United States, dealers selling letters of transit, and French and German officials. In the beginning of the bar scene, Rick says, "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." This incorporates the idea of coincidence in the film. This sharp and defined change is different from the soft lights of Classical Hollywood cinematography. Hard lighting can be achieved by using frosted bulbs or compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs have a light output of almost a thousand lumens. The bulb diffuses a very cold and strong light. A cheaper way of achieving the same results would be using a single uncovered incandescent light bulb. Natural daylight is also great for creating hard shadows. Hard lighting and sharp edged person define the Film Noir. While soft lighting is only used for glamourizing strong female characters. Backlighting is also a technique which is used. It is no longer necessary for many artists to hire an expensive 48– track studio when they can inexpensively duplicate many of the same production values by using software programs like Pro Tools (Llommen, 2010). 30 years ago the thought of an artist recording an album with there own financial backing was unheard of. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Master License deal is when the artist "leases" the license to their recordings to a label for a fixed amount of time and therefore the label has a vested interest in the record and how its promoted and distributed. The label will pay for the records and the means of distribution. The return to the artist on these types of deals tends to be much higher. Master license deals are very common amongst "indie" labels such as Inertia. It is common for an artist who funds their own recordings to push for a license deal, this is less risk for the label as they have the final product and know what they are investing their money into. It's also great for the artist as the artist has the final product, which they had total artistic control over without having the pressure and input of a label telling them what to do. The term within a master license deal tends to be much shorter than that of a traditional record deal, it will apply only for the rights to that master for a fixed period of time and after this time full rights and ownership of the master belongs back with the artist. There is no advance in a master license deal and therefore the artist does not owe the label any money for recording the album as the artist would have fully paid for the recording themselves. • 59. The Golden Age of Hollywood The Golden Age of Hollywood was a time when Hollywood hit its peak successfully and economically, starting with the late 1920s, and met its decline due to corruption in the late 1950s. One would ask the question: "Where did the name Hollywood come from?" The name came from Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife, Daeida, who were owners of a small ranch west of Los Angeles. According to u–s–history.com, "Daeida, who, while on a train trip east met a woman that described her country home in Ohio, that had been named for the Dutch settlement of Hollywood. Liking the name, Daeida christened their ranch 'Hollywood,' upon her return." (History of Hollywood, California) Movies during this time period became a vital form of entertainment for all Americans during this time period. By the 1910s, Hollywood was combined into its neighboring city Los Angeles, and many motion–picture studios began to open. Moviemakers rushed to Hollywood, and competition started to become widespread between directors and producers. By 1910, the first motion picture was made in Hollywood, titled In Old California, and soon enough, Los Angeles became second to New York in producing films also because of it's quintessential weather for movies to be made in all year long during this time. As Hollywood began to industrialize, filmmakers began to work on the image of a "star"; they would continuously use these highly–paid actors in order to achieve a form of comfort for the general audience of the movies. • 61. Mpa's Rating Frameworks Defective? The Motion Picture Association of America, also called the MPAA, is the gathering of individuals who rate the motion pictures we watch and appreciate. In any case, the question is; is it true that this is alleged rating framework defective? The rating framework for cutting edge gatherings of people is skewed by an obsolete specific conviction framework, there are no standards or rules to rating a specific motion picture, and the entire thing is simply pointless these days. In 1922, the "huge three" film studios established the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, headed by Will H. Feeds. Later in 1930 they peaked Motion Picture Production Code, also called the Hays Code. This framework put the films we watch into two classes, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nolan directed the film while working side by side with Wally Pfister, the director of photography for the movie. Nolan wanted to make sure to encapsulate the idea of dreams and reality intertwining with one another while still connecting emotionally with the audience. While designing the image, Pfister's intention was to appeal to an audience of individuals who enjoy the suspense inflicted with thrilling films. He targeted an audience primarily of adults 18 years and up who belong to the middle to upper class. On the cover of the poster, all the cast members are displayed in nice attire fitted for those who are quite wealthy. Also, the environment the characters are placed in appear to be in an upkept area filled with modern looking buildings associated with areas that have money. Now looking at the poster, most of the cast is represented by young adults all of whom range from their early 20's to late 30's. • 65. Prince Rogers Nelson Biography Prince Rogers Nelson, the artist known as Prince who Thursday became "formerly" with a devastating finality at only 57, was so gifted it barely can be believed, let alone described. Thankfully, it hardly needs to be, because anyone who wasn't frightened off by his flagrancies and ambiguities could tell that this was a talent of the kind that rearranges what culture can do and what a human can be–the kind possessed, for instance, by two artists who predeceased him, his contemporary Michael Jackson and his elder by a dozen years David Bowie, and a very short list of other figures in pop–music history. He was one of the finest ever pop singers, one of the most incredible guitarists (the anecdote in which Eric Clapton once replied to the question "What's it like to be the greatest guitarist alive?" by saying "I don't know, ask Prince" is probably apocryphal but, on a higher plane, definitely correct), and one of the most indelible songwriters, most influential producers, best wearers (and removers) of clothing, and most electric semiotic manipulators. • 67. Jazz Singer Research Paper The innovation of The Jazz Singer allows it to hold an important place in film history for being among the first synchronized sound films. It is credited for ending the silent film era and pioneering new and creative ways to tell stories. However, silent films would still be made way into the 1930s, and Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times (1936) is sometimes described as the last silent film. People are often surprised to learn that The Jazz Singer was not the first film to use sound. 1926's Don Juan was the first feature–length film to use the Vitaphone for its sound effects and soundtrack, even though the film has no spoken dialogue. The first "all–talking" (or all–dialogue) feature–length picture was Warners Brothers, gangster film Lights of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 69. The American Motion Picture Industry PART I – IDENTIFICATIONS: SUBSECTION A: i. Eadweard Muybridge: The story of the American motion picture industry begins with the eccentric 'photographic artist', Eadweard Muybridge. In 1872, Eadweard Muybridge was sought out by former governor of California and railroad tycoon, Leland Stanford, because of his expertise with the camera. Stanford thought that if Muybridge could capture equine motion in a series of photographs, it would be possible to discern whether or not all four of a horse's legs were simultaneously aloft at any point when running. However, initial series of photographs taken by Muybridge was unsuccessful in resolving Stanford's query. However, in 1877, Stanford decided to re–enlist Muybridge for a more scientific approach to the problem of equine motion. The second time around, Muybridge used twelve electrically operated cameras capable of taking photographs in succession. The product of Stanford and Muybridge's experiment, twelve instantaneous photographs of a horse in motion, contributed to our understanding of animal locomotion and showed images could be blurred together by the brain to produce motion. This discovery set the stage for the invention of the motion picture camera and inspired Muybridge's later technological innovation, the zoopraxiscope, a basic motion operated projection device. ii. • 71. American Influence On German Films Before the 1930's many influential films were silent, except the score in the background that had slight or little relevance to the movie. As technology kept improving, sounds were added to movies as a method to help get across themes and motifs. Dialog could now be heard in movies, instead of having to be read on a blank background. One of the first and most influence German films to properly execute the use of sounds was Blue Angel, by Josef Von Sternberg. Blue Angel was created in 1930, and tells of the story of a respected professor who in an attempt to catch his student from attending a club called The Blue Angel, ends up falling in love with a cabaret performer named Lola Lola. • 77. Warner Bros Logos History In September of 1925, Warner Bros. retrofitted an old studio in Brooklyn, New York to produce sound film using the Western Electric Technology. To showcase the new technology Warner Bros. signed licensing agreements, and a number of popular entertainers. Warner Bros. made an ingenious move by signing these contracts before they even had use for the talent involved, which allowed the company to avoid paying inflated rates routinely demanded by talent once sound became the norm. Since Warner Bros. had a lack of movie stars and its operation was small, sound allowed for them to become a major studio. Warner Bros. pushed ahead with the sound on disc technology, but the majority of the industry agreed that sound directly recorded to film was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We could not have the films we do today, or at any point without advancing and improving the technology in the industry. It all started with photography and then came the Kinetoscope, then the Vitascope, then improvements onto the camera, 30mm cameras, 70mm, and Vitaphones. All these advances happened within a 30 year period which is quite remarkable. These advances in technology impacted the history of film forever. Without the innovation to put sound in film, filmmakers would have been limited to what the can do with their characters. After so long it would have got sick of seeing very identical silent films over and over again. This also allowed for music to become a big part in film. Music helps the audiences understand what kind of emotion they should feel during a film, and during a silent film you cannot achieve that next level of emotion. Also by putting sound into film this allowed the audience to hear a character speak. Being able to hear a character talk lets the audience get more invested into the character. The character on screen being silent would draw a line that the audiences always knew they were in a movie, but now with the advanced technology hearing the character speak and interact with others get people more immersed. The technological innovations have been further improved on today with the use of CGI, digital cameras, and many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
