ART 200 (Corbin)
October 29, 2015
For this project I visited multiple online museums, but decided on The Metropolitan Museum of Art,
National Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Three pieces of artwork that I found to be
interesting to me and that caught my eye are The Harvesters by Pieter Bruegel the Elder found at
http://www.metmuseum.org, Open Window, Collioure by Henri Matisse found at
http://www.nga.gov, and Christ Washing the Feet of His Disciples by Nicolas Bertin found at
http://www.artic.edu. There are a lot of pieces of art to choose from in each museum, so I had to
figure out a way to narrow it down to three. While browsing through ... Show more content on

Bertin tended to paint pictures of subject who are religious, mythological, and allegorical. This
painting in particular portrays Christ washing Saint Peter's feet right after the Last Supper. There is a
strong focal point in this painting and it is the man standing in the red robe with his hand on his
chest. There is also a lot of activity in this painting as well because there is Christ to the left washing
the feet surrounded by his disciples, the women in the background at the table, and the man to the
right fixing his shoe. Bertin used a lot of facial expressions for each of the people in this painting
from puzzled to humiliation. The size of this oil on panel painting is 1 ft 7.5 inches by 2 ft 4.75

How To Visit To A Metropolitan Museum
Over the spring break, I chose to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with my friends Irene and
Mei. We explored many exhibits such as The Egyptian Art, The American Wing, and Asian Art. I
saw statues, ceramics, textiles, pottery, and paintings. I really enjoyed looking at the Sphinx and
sarcophagus in the Egyptian Art section. The interior design of the museum was so well planned out
in each exhibit from the lighting of the room to the smell. The interior design of the museum was so
exquisite especially the atmosphere it created. I felt like I could explore the corners of the world in
one building.
I enjoyed the Asian Art and American Wing the most because there were so many displays on the
Asian art collection and American Wing. The

Countless art has been sought–after throughout history. Explorers, scientists, art collectors,
politicians, and entrepreneurs from Western nations have sought out and removed art from the lands
of great civilizations, often with the assistance and participation of local people and governments.
Even as cultural property faces immediate danger today in conflict zones like Syria and Mali, there
is circumstantial evidence that some nations are awakening to the political and foreign policy
benefits that can flow from the repatriation of cultural patrimony. While on a different scale from
World War II, historic structures, religious monuments, and other priceless ancient times continue to
suffer collateral damage and manipulation in armed conflict. Relics have been stolen, smuggled and
sold in what is a reported multibillion dollar underground market. They have become the illicit
prizes of private collectors and the subject of legal claims against museums. Of the countless
museums subject to legal claims, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City happens to be
one of them. "The Metropolitan Museum has acquired thousands of works and objects of art from
the antiquities". "For the past several years, the government of Turkey has warned U.S. and foreign
museums (including The Metropolitan Museum of Art), that unless ancient objects from Turkish soil
are given up on demand, Turkey will stop lending artworks" (The Committee for Cultural Policy,
2015). Turkey continues to up the

The Statue Of Liberty: Metropolitan Museum Of Art
The Statue of Liberty combines architectural revivals in its pedestal, which was designed by "[t]he
Paris–educated American architect" Richard Morris Hunt was named with neoclassical features
(Bell and Abrams, 47). The pedestal "fully complemented – without rivaling – the majesty of the
statue itself" (Bell and Abrams 47) although it is almost as high as the statue itself. The Statue has a
height of X feet [confers X m] and the pedestal is eighty–nine feet [confers X m] (Baker 319) high.
Besides it is "another truncated pyramid of concrete, faced by granite" (317), which in no way
affects the statue's guise moreover it harmonizes with it.

architect, Gustave Eiffel, of the Eifel Tower in Paris, which likewise shows the European influence

The entrance to the pedestal's inside and stairs to visit the statue is small but protruded, which
clarifies and emphasizes the monument's height. It is incorporated in an executed pedestal consisting

Short Trip To The Metropolitan Museum
Museum experience Museum is a magic place for human beings to talk to the greatest artists in the
history regardless of time and space. Visiting a museum is like taking a long walk in the history of
human beings. Artworks are designated to record either the unique thoughts of artists or the indelible
history of a period. A short trip of the Metropolitan Museum brings me not only the joy of visiting,
but also the decorous feeling of baroque art. It is not surprise that many baroque art is devoted to
demonstrate the majesty and solemnity. Ferdinando de' Medici (1663–1713), Grand Prince of
Tuscany ,which is created by Giovanni Battista Foggini, deeply impress me.

Of the three Assignment prompts, it was "threshold" that spoke to me in its sense as a point of entry
or beginning –– in my artistic interpretation, to a new reality or narrative. In exploring the literal,
literary and figurative meaning of the word, I decided to create a narrative from each meaning,
which resonated with me and stirred the creative juices necessary to begin. My first interpretation
piece symbolizes the literal crossing over the threshold of my artistic journey from museum
enthusiast to artist. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has had a tremendous impact on my study of
art and art history, it was only fitting to include the powerful monuments guarding the threshold

Personal Narrative: Metropolitan Museum Of Art
The day had finally came, it was July 21st, 2020. I had been waiting for this day for what seemed
like forever! I was beyond excited that of all artists, I was chosen to escort the Interplanetary
Ambassador around our world and culture. Once I greeted him at the New York Space Port, I
decided to take him to our very own Metropolitan Museum of Art located here in NYC. The ride
from the space port to the Museum was a little over two hours and felt like forever. On the way there
the Ambassador asked many questions about our clothes, food, money, and many of our everyday
things that are around us. Then, out of nowhere he asked me a question that changed my life as an
artist completely. He said, "In my planet we have clothes and money and everything that you
humans have, but we do not have art. Can you please explain to me what this art thing is?" From
that day on, I have asked myself over and over again what art really is and if I ever did a good
enough job explaining it to him. As an artist, I have been challenged in many ways with different
projects, people, and so one. However never once in the thirty three years of being an artist, have I

it is because "art is in the eye of the beholder." I also explained to him that art is whatever a society
or culture wants it to be, such as whatever his planet wants it to be. I told him that as the
Ambassador he must reveal the world of art to his people once returning to his planet. I explained
that his culture of art would completely differ from that seen here in New York and that his people

The important thing is that everyone who reads their publications can understand what they do in the
museum, in addition to maintaining a constant dialogue with the public.
Brian Droitcour says in his article, The Institution as User: Museums and Social Media, published
by the electronic magazine Art in America the following:
"The Metropolitan Museum of Art uses its Twitter account like a help desk, fielding queries and
requests of all sorts from visitors to their New York home, and from curious users and other
institutions. Most queries get an instant reply, acknowledging the question and asking the user to
wait; a subsequent follow–up provides an answer. The social media manager consults with the
relevant expert at the museum and reports back: it's social media as switchboard." (Art in America
Magazine website).
The goal of the Met in social media is to remain as a reference for culture, reaching more and more
people, for this, it is important to stay close to the audience interested in our content and involved in

The Civil War and American Art Exhibit at the New York...
On Saturday, June 15 I attended the Civil War and American Art exhibit at the New York
Metropolitan Museum of Art. There were a number of different people who were present on this
occasion. I believe there were so many people there because this is one of the better known art
galleries throughout New York. Additionally, the fact that today was part of the weekend probably
contributed to the massive crowds of people present. Not everyone was there to attend the Civil War
and American Art exhibit, however; there were several other exhibits taking place in different
locations throughout the museum that day. The exhibit contained upwards of 20 photographs and at
least 60 paintings. One of the most agreeable things about the works of art that I witnessed is that
collectively, they assisted in recounting the sentiment that gripped the country during the war that
threatened to sunder it. One could almost feel the initial enthusiasm as the war broke out, that was
swiftly prolonged by numerous clashes over a period of years. There were works that alluded to an
impending war, ones that depicted that war, and numerous ones that hinted at a hoped for ending in
which the mightiness of the country would someday be restored. One of the pieces that I found to be
the most moving was Frederic Edwin Church's "Our Banner in the Sky", which was painted during
the war's outset in 1861. This is one of the pieces in which the enthusiasm for the war was quite
clearly seen. In this work, the

many different groups of people. There were students on trips, tourists, and local residents. It was a
magnificent sight to look at. Walking into the museum felt like walking into another world. I had

Most pieces of Virgin and Child or Madonna and Child have the same traditional look to it, with the
child sitting on the mother's lap and the mother, Mary, wearing the traditional cloak looking serious.
This piece looks similar to Duccio's Madonna and Child, however it seems like there is more
emotion being shown by both Virgin and Child, to each other, in Claus de Werve's sculpture. It looks
like the mother is reading the book, in her lap, to her child. Since this piece is religious, the book
would most likely be the Bible. The mother is reading the Bible to her child and sharing the stories
in the Bible with him. From going to the museum and doing some research online, this piece by
Claus de Werve was a gift from either the Duke of Burgundy or his wife, to the Franciscan Order of
Poor Clares, a convent. (Metropolitan Museum of Art) It was a nice take on the iconic Madonna and
Child or Virgin and Child. There were many different pieces of the Virgin and Child or Madonna

was so simple yet so unique. It looks like any ordinary woman with her child, but it is not. It is

Descriptive Essay About Metropolitan Museum
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and finest art museums in the world. The
museum's collection consists of prehistory and present artifacts from every part of the globe. The
Metropolitan Museum of Art is located at 5th avenue and 82nd street in New York City. On Monday,
November 5th, my brother and I took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum. It was a very long journey
to get there. When we arrived at 34th street, we took the E train and transferred to Lexington Avenue
to get to 86th street. From there we walked a couple blocks to get to the Metropolitan Museum. The
reason why I took my brother is because he loves museums, so wanted someone who would not
want to leave the museum after a short period of time due to lack of interest. Not only I enjoyed this
trip, but also my brother enjoyed it maybe even more. Although this isn't the first time that I visit the
Metropolitan museum, every visit never fails to amaze me by how massive it is. Not only the
Metropolitan Museum is imposing from how it's beautifully designed from the outside, but also the
inside of the building is mind boggling from the great amount of priceless of artwork it contains.
When my brother and I first entered the doors of the museum, he was blown away. He couldn't

also Tourists from around the world. Our trip mostly focused upon Islamic and Ancient Egyptian art

As I look at the painting of The Adoration of The Shepherds, two artists, Andrea Mantegna and El
Greco, showed it different ways with same subjects. First, the title of the paintings is about Jesus's
birth. Andrea mantegna artist had lived from ca 1430 to 1506. He established his reputation when he
was 20 years old. This painting is the evident of his highly individual style. He worked it during ca
1451 to 1453. He painted it in horizontal format with 153/4x217/8(40x55.6). He used tempera on a
canvas that transferred from a wood. In difference, El Greco(Spain 141–1641) worked it with oil
color on canvas by vertical format. The size is 125 5/8x707/8(319x180cm). In Greco's painting, the

The angel figures in El Greco's are as humans that they are looking something like a name list. Holy
Maria is in the each of the paintings, but the Maria in El Greco's painting is just looking at the baby.
But Maria is praying to God in Mantegna's painting.
I see differences between the two pictures about painting styles. In Mantegna, it is painted
sensitively in every figures that all of clothes wrinkles are showed. This painting is a detailed
realistic work. Also, the mountain and the land have many lines to show realism. However, Greco's
painting is worked as tone by colors. It feels smooth, but is heavy surrounding. It is used by oil
colors, so it is painted smoothly. It is worked very well. However, the Mantegna's painting is
showed very brightly with tempera colors. The brushes are stroked strongly, but it is also worked
well. The settle of the Greco's painting is in inside; however, Mantegna's painting has the landscape
in outside. This painting seems that the time is arternoon. Greoc's painting is focused to angels who
are placed on top. However, Mantegna's painting is focused to Holy Maria who is placed in middle
side.
Each artist showed their own styles, so I can see the different styles of the paintings. Although it
feels differently, the both of the paintings are successful work that used nice colors at that time.
However, I like Greco's work because the

Shakespeare was a great writer and penned dramas, comedies, and tragedies. (Backman, 530). One
of the pieces is a beautiful print, A Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare, Act 4, Scene 1), is a
print which was engraved after Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 – 1873), from London. The British
engraver, Samuel Cousins (1801 – 1887), created the print in November 1857, using a mixed
method engraving process with mezzotint, on chine coolé. Upon viewing the print, it is engaging as
the characters are expressive and detailed despite the absence of bright colors. The reproduction
represents Bottom, the weaver with a head of an ass being favored by the fairy queen Titania. They
are surrounded by fairies, and enchanted animals while the sprite, Puck watches from behind. The
technique of mezzotint originated in the seventeenth century by a German inventor, Ludwig von
Siegen. Mezzotint was a laborious method which used an engraved metal plate. The highly skilled
artist, engraved or pricked by hand, the plate making numerous small holes that would hold ink.
When the plate was filled with ink, it would create large areas of tone to reproduce a painting.
During the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica,
"mezzotints were the only means most people had of becoming acquainted with the paintings of
major artists". After the invention of photography in the nineteenth century, the use of mezzotint was
rare. Upon learning more on the subject of the print, and the techniques used to create the print, the

The Visit At The Metropolitan Museum Of Art

New York City that has a variety of ancient artwork from different cultures and time periods. There
is paintings and sculptures from Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome and Greece. The museum is
additionally home to artwork from many different time periods including ancient Near Eastern Art,
Middle Ages and Europe during the Renaissance. The Met also has artwork from many different
religions such as Christianity and Islam. Each section in the museum had a specific artwork that
attracted my attention. On the first floor of the Met Museum is the Greek and Roman Art. The Greek
and Roman section has hundreds of art work ranging from the Neolithic period to Roman Emperor
Constantine. In the Greek and Roman section there is many portraits and sculptures including the
statue of Emperor Augustus, the statue of Aphrodite, and the Marble female figure. The sculptures in
this section range in different shapes, sizes and colors and are made with a variety of materials. The
sculptures depict emperors, Kings, Queens, Gods and Goddesses of the time. Much of the statues in
this section are missing key parts such as arms, legs and the head due to the fact that they were
damaged before being bought to the museum. The statue in this section that caught my attention the
most was the Marble Statue of Aphrodite. This is a statue of Aphrodite, who is the Greek Goddess of

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world's largest and finest art museums. The main
Neoclassical architectural style building is located on the eastern edge of Central Park in New York
City, New York. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. It was founded in 1870
with a mission to collect, preserve, and display works of art. In 1866 a group of Americans gathered
at a restaurant to celebrate the Fourth of July. After dinner, John Jay, a prominent lawyer gave a
speech proposing that he and his compatriots decided to create a "national institution and gallery of
art." In the next four years, they convinced American civic leaders, art collectors, and
philanthropists to support the project, and finally in 1870 the Metropolitan Museum of Art was
incorporated. During the 1870s the museum was housed in two different locations in New York City,
first in a building at 681 Fifth Avenue and later at 128 West 14th Street. In 1880 the museum moved
to its present location in Central Park on Fifth Avenue between 80th and 84th Streets. The museum

This paper will analyze the iconography of two medieval works from the collection of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both of them depict the appearance of the resurrected Jesus Christ to
his follower Mary Magdalene (Gospel of John 20:11–17). According to the Bible, three days after
Christ died by crucifixion and was buried, he was resurrected. On that day, Mary Magdalene came
to his tomb early in the morning, alone, and found the tomb empty. As she was weeping in the
garden outside the tomb, she recognized a man she thought was a gardener, and asked him what had
become of Jesus' body. When the man spoke her name, Mary Magdalene recognized that he was
Jesus Christ, who had been resurrected. As she reached out to embrace Jesus, he motioned for her to
stay back, saying "Do not touch me," because he had not yet ascended into heaven. ... Show more

The tapestry was woven of wool, silk, and gilt–metal wrapped thread between 1500 and 1520 CE. It
presents Jesus standing just right of center, in front of a large fruit tree, with Mary Magdalene
kneeling to his right. Because Mary and Jesus are centered horizontally in the composition, and they
are both large (between 2 and 3 feet tall), the viewer can determine that they are the primary subjects
in the tapestry. Christ is wearing a red robe, and the wounds on his hands and feet from where he
was nailed to the cross are visible. These signs identify the figure as Christ, indicating his mortality
and recent death. He is holding a shovel in his left hand, which explains Mary's mistake in
identifying him as a gardener. Behind Jesus, in the upper right corner of the tapestry, is a small cliff
with an open cave and a boulder sitting in front of it. This cave represents Jesus'

The two sites that I have chosen to compare are the National Gallery of Art (NGA) and The

homepage, pictures, text, and content along with the overall quality of the two sites. I will go into
detail about the differences and which site, in my opinion, would be more enjoyable based on their
website. Upon first glance of their homepages, the two sites look completely different in style.
When The Metropolitan Museum homepage loaded, I was in awe of the bold image of a man's face

Its name originated from the well–known architect who built the building – Marcel Breuer, known
for his sharp–edged and box shaped designs. In 1963, Breuer was given the job of building a new
museum in New York City. He built the Whitney Museum which was originally located at 945

A Day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art I. Jan van Eyck's "Last Judgment" Jan van Eyck was

Europe. One of his famous works is "The Last Judgment". At first sight this work immediately

similar work I have seen, triggered in my mind. The material that is used is oil on canvas,

and the setting is not recognizable. In the depth of his eyes one can see the suffering and pain for our
human sacrifice. As well as this one can also see the holy look on the facial expression as he gently
carries the cross. On the cross, above the left hand in Greek letters, "domenikos theotokopoulos

Robert Lehman collection since 1953. Its size is 41 3/8 * 31 in. (105 * 79 cm) and the material used
to make it is oil on canvas. III. Pendant mask; Iyoba 16th century The artist's name is Benin and he

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET)
As I walked up to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) for the first time, I was overwhelmed
with amount of visitors that occupied the steps to the entrance and wondered if this visit was the best
choice. I opened the front doors to the museum and stepped inside; my immediate impression of the
place reminded me of my first experience at Grand Central Station. Initially, I was overwhelmed and
distracted by the hustle and loud noise around me, yet at the same time, I found myself mesmerized
by the architectural beauty and layout of the place.
Though, I started off with perhaps a contradiction of sensations, eventually I found comfort in the
thought that the MET is truly a place of learning. Whilst I was making my way through security
contemplating my next steps, I looked up and there before me was the colossal statue of Amenemhat
II. His presence gave me the immediate feeling that something special awaited for me, I felt
welcomed, and from this experience I entered into the exhibit, Ancient Egypt the Middle Kingdom
Transformed.
The topic of ancient Egypt evoked a forgotten memory of passion for this topic and time period.

This was the medium in which the MET used to construct their narrative and to educate the
participant. These artifacts spoke in a unique way, each one depicting images that told about the
structures of society, trades, religious motifs, as well as the techniques and mysteries around the
methods used in creating such masterpieces. As I continued from one display to the next, reading the
descriptions and tidbits of history, I easily transitioned from one period to the next. I describe this

The Death Of Socrates: Metropolitan Museum Of Art
For my museum paper I have chosen to analyze "The Death of Socrates" painting located at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art located in New York. "The Death of Socrates" was a work during the
Neoclassic period. Neoclassicism symbolizes clarity of form, sober colors, shallow space, strong
horizontal and verticals. It is inspired by Greek and Roman styles. In the painting it shows these
examples of Neoclassicism it has sober colors, shallow space with a raking light and, strong
horizontal and verticals lines which create a classical organized composition. First, the story behind
the death of Socrates. Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher who was being accused by the
Athenian government, for not believing in their gods and corrupting young ... Show more content on

Enlightenment was a movement that began in 1765 responding to Baroque and Rococo styles and
had the desire to come back to the classical elements of ancient Rome and Greece. The "Death of

Enlightenment famous painting compared to the death of Socrates. In this image during the same

Metropolitan Museum Analysis
Since ancient times, humanity has used art to express feelings, emotions, ideas, and much more.
Also, it was used as a medium to communicate between each other. As a result, it is not surprising
that we feel delighted while observing works of art. Now, there are many opportunities to go to
museums, and enjoy the precious art pieces shown there. One of the museums that has a wide
variety of art, is the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Metropolitan Museum is extraordinary because it displaying artwork from all over the world,
and reveales 5000 years of history through its exhibitions. The museum also shows pieces of art
from our ancestors and our contemporary artists. "The mission statement of this museum for the past

The left hand it is resting casually over the club which is covered with a lion skin, representing the
first labor that Hercules had to accomplish. This particular statue is a free standing sculpture made
of bronze, so it has a smooth but firm texture, and gives spectators the feeling of being in the
presence of a god. Even though the sculpture looks opaque, when it was made, using a casting
techniques, it shined and glowed to represent heroic person.
This research was done through The Metropolitan Museum of Art's website, a very user friendly site
to browse and learn about art. Since everything is well organized, and it has links that can help
people find what they are looking for, it is an excellent source to do research papers. The only thing
I will recommend to the museum is to make videos about the sculpture or rotatable pictures in order
to observe them from all angles. Even though the experience of being in front of a piece of art is
incomparable, the website provides a very realistic experience, and history lesson for anyone

From September 2013 through January 2014, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City
was home to an exhibition entitled Medieval Treasures from Hildesheim. The exhibition featured 48
pieces from various media which all originated from the UNESCO Heritage Sites of Saint Mary's
Cathedral or St. Michael's Church in Hildesheim, Germany. These objects consisted of 6 full or
partial manuscripts and 42 sculptural pieces, including 7 reliquaries, 4 portable altars, and 3
liturgical fans. Most of the sculptural pieces had liturgical uses, an almost all were crafted out of
copper, gold, and/or silver. What is most fascinating about these items is that none of them belong to
the Metropolitan Museum; all were borrowed from the Dom–Museum, the Dombibliotek, ... Show

The exhibition was arranged by curator Peter Barnet, in conjunction with the director of the
Hildesheim Cathedral Museum, Michael Brandt, and a curator from the Hildesheim Cathedral
Museum, Gerhard Lutz. The exhibition catalogue also includes a foreword from the Dean of
Hildesheim Cathedral, Hans Georg Koitz where he reveals that these objects are on display in New
York because the museum in Hildesheim, where they are normally displayed, is under renovations
for an expansion. This final observation brings me to my main question which my paper will
address: with a collection as encyclopedic as the Metropolitan Museum of Art's, why would a
curator want to bring 48 artistically and religiously significant artifacts from Hildesheim, Germany
to New York for an exhibition? These objects all had to be shipped thousands of miles in order to be
shown in a lesser exhibition for less than 5 months. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the
largest collections of Medieval art in the world, which is elaborated on at length in the director's
forward from Thomas P. Campbell, and the untrained eye has a difficult time telling the difference
between, for example, the two arm reliquaries owned by the museum

This paper compares and contrasts two sculptures, a statue entitled The Royal
Acquaintances Memi and Sabu (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2016b) which depicts two
Egyptian important people embracing arm in arm, and the Statue of Gudea (The
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2016a) which depicts a seated ruler of the ancient
Mesopotamia era, while considering the effect the intended purpose of the sculptures have on their
appearances. Ricard (2009) described how "Artists are a product of their culture" (Slide.39), and
these two statues are fine examples of how cultural style can be represented in an expression. By
working through the form, content and context of both pieces, I will attempt to describe the purpose
of each artist's work.

Both choices of medium seem to be purposefully chosen by the artists; the choice of color and
medium perhaps going hand–in–hand.
Regarding composition, while the SG sculpture is a solid, seated, one–level piece, the
RAMS sculpture is an unbalanced, asymmetrical one, showing the significant difference in height
between the male and female figures.
The primary content of both represent real–life features, such as RAMS' loving couple, their
embrace, and their smiles, and SG's focal hat, prominent, powerful–looking ruler, seated position
and his bare feet. Furthermore, SG's secondary meaning behind the content could be the gesture of
clasping hands, perhaps showing a conventional significance in the artist's Neo–Sumerian culture
when a ruler goes before his subjects, whereas RAMS' couple might depict a husband and wife of
high social status, which was typical for many Egyptian artifacts.
Finally, both sculptures have script etched into their medium; SG's on the robe, expressing Gudea's
restored great temples, and RAMS' names in Hieroglyph, on

DBA/380 Jeff Pohl
October 14, 2014 A database is used to store collections of information and easily retrieved at a later
date. The larger the amount of information, the more organized a database needs to be. A database is
created with the requirements and needs of current and future users and most importantly, with past
users and their information. Out book defines database systems as "an organization of components
that define and regulate the collection, storage, management, and use of data within a database
environment". (Database Systems, 2013)
A database is part of a larger system known as an information system, it helps with the collection,
storage and retrieval of data. The database structure needs to be defined and its fields labeled
properly for it to be an asset to the user.
The database environment I have selected to analyze is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York City. On April 13, 1870, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was opened to the public. Located in
New York City, it is the largest museum in the United States, with a collection of more than two
million works of art, spread among seventeen departments. According to their website, "the
Museum's two–million–square–foot building houses over two million objects, tens of thousands of
which are on view at any given time". (The Metropolitian Museum of Art, 2000–2014)
I will be analyzing the development of a database to suit their needs. The database will be used

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Essay
Positioned alongside Central Park within the heart of New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of
Art is one of the largest and most influential art museums in the world. The Met houses an extensive
collection of curated works that spans throughout various time periods and different cultures. The
context of museums, especially one as influential as the Met, inherently predisposes its visitors to a
set of understandings that subtly influence how they interpret and ultimately construct meanings
about each individual object within a museum. By analyzing two separate works on exhibit at the
Met, I will pose the argument that museums offer a unique expression of a world view that is
dictated through every element of its construction.
An object placed on display behind a glass case inside a museum would hold a vastly different
meaning if it were for sale by a street vendor, such as the individuals who set up their tables only a
few feet away from the Met. Brent Plate in Religion, Art, and Visual Culture argues that "objects
obtain different meanings in different locations and historical settings." The different meanings that
objects are able to obtain is attributed to the relationships that are established between the object
itself and the environment that it is located in. These relationships often involve the kind of audience
that a museum attracts, where the work is exhibited, and how the exhibit is laid out. Museums
subsequently have the ability

My Experience at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
Never before have I seen a museum as grand as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. From
its architecture to its massive art collection, The Met has a little bit of everything and one is sure to
find something that captures his or her interest. Considering that The Met is the United States'
largest art museum, it is easy to get lost within its many corridors and wings. My visit to The Met
took place during the last week of July. Despite the almost unbearable heat and humidity that hung
in the air, visiting museums under these climate conditions is a welcome respite from a suffocating,
yet bright summer afternoon. One of the first things that I noticed about The Met was its exterior
architecture. Like many historical buildings and museums, The Met's architecture is highly
influenced by European architecture; in this case, it appears as though the architecture is attempting
to emulate the gothic style. Once inside the daunting faรงade, I was pleasantly surprised to see how
richly illuminated the museum was. What made it even more remarkable was that much of the light
appeared to permeate through skylights that had been built into the building's ceiling. Moreover, I
was pleasantly surprised to see that The Met was considerably less crowded than the American
Museum of Natural History, which I had visited the day before. As I began to wander through the
museum, I stumbled upon one of the best Egyptian collections I have ever seen, with the exception
of special travelling

In the Metropolitan Museum of Art, two paintings are exhibited taking place in the 1800s. These
artists have similarities and differences viewpoints of the environment in their painting and it helps
people get a glance of what the 1800s were like.
The first painting was by a man named George Caleb Bingham. Bingham was born March 20, 1811,
Augusta County, Virginia to Mary Amend and Henry Vest Bingham and died July 7, 1879, in
Kansas City, Missouri. Bingham was a self taught artist. He's well known for his painting like The
Country Election. He was actually a Democratic activist and used his art to demonstrate his position.
Bingham's nationality was American. His famous art piece was titled Fur Traders Descending the

Three specific details that indicate that the artist is a close observer are one, the blood marks on the
duck that one can assume his son shot at in order to eat on their way to their trade point. Two, if
observed closely, one can see a flock of birds flying toward the sunlight draw lightly to demonstrate
the illusion of afar. Three, one can see native symbols on the quilt that the son is leaning on. The
painting is painted as if the viewers are on land watching the father and son rowing the boat towards
possibly the end of the Mississippi river. The water is clear and it reflects everything in the boat.
Both the father and son are calm. The son is lounging and the father is smoking a pipe giving off a
calm mood. The artist uses curves to help demonstrate the son's boredom by making look as if he's
slouching. Bingham made the father and son's body to connect and make a semicircle. Bingham
uses spring colors, happy colors, to portray a relaxed mood. He uses soft colors, for instance the soft
red color of the father shirt and the matte color black of the cat's fur the keep the tranquil feeling.
The second painting was by a man named Winslow Homer. Homer was born in February 24, 1836,
Boston, Massachusetts to Charles Savage Homer and Henrietta Benson Homer. He attended the
National Academy of Design, which helped him develop as an artist. Homer was very artistic he did
drawing, wood engraving, oil painting, and watercolor painting

art work that I have heard about. But going there give me a real taste of the struggle as well as the

I chose was the prehistoric period dating from 3800 B.C.E. to 1600 B.C.E., (TMMoA). The first

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located in New York City on the famous Museum Mile, also
known as 5th avenue, and it is one of the biggest in the United States. Among the hundreds of
galleries, the modernist room 901 is located in the back, left side of the building. There, the three
main styles present are fauvism, cubism and surrealism. The museum labels show how the paintings
are from 1910 to 1950, however, after looking more closely it becomes clear that most of them
range from 1920s to 1930s. Majority of the pieces are oil on canvas, with very few exceptions. As
far as the provenance, the artists are mainly from France, there are some Italians, Americans, and
very few artists from other European countries. The overall theme is a tormented perception of the
world, with a voluntary, and sometimes even involuntary, Freudian influence. ... Show more content

Literally, in French the word fauve means "wild animal", which denotes the recklessness, and
colorfulness that characterizes this style. Fauvists made color the subject of their paintings, thus it
was not just a way of describing reality, and rather the color became the reality. Basically, they gave
color the ability to stand by itself. It was never a coherent movement as each artist had a personal,
unique approach. Many artists looked at non–European art, especially African Art, and were
influenced by it. This is not to be read in an undermining way, but Fauvism is a movement in which
painters experimented colors and their interaction. The founder of Fauvism is Henri Matisse, who
studied in the studio of Gustave Moreau, where he met Georges

evolution from high brow institutions to ones that serve, educate, and engage the populace. The
articles also trace the constant discussions museum professionals had regarding the focus and
dissemination of their collections. These articles all agree that museums must transform from places
that solely focus on the collection, preservation, conservation, and dissemination of rare items to
ones that also become a part of the community, represent the many voices and interests of the

In addition to the traditional artifacts one expects to find, the museums presented different voices
and perspectives, in addition to many opportunities for the visitor to get closer and interact.
Additionally, they provided current perspective to their exhibitions. My recent visits to the Stax
Records Museum, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, and the Hermitage, proved
enlightening as to the prime function and obligation of modern museums, as well as their future
roles in society. While the primary draw to the Stax Records Museum is the connection the visitor
has to the music from the label and studio, Stax begins the tour in a reconstructed church and
exhibitions that trace the culture and heritage essential to understanding the people and the art
preserved and displayed. The recently opened Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol,
Virginia provides the visitor several opportunities to "lean in," interact, and personalize their
experiences with the various exhibitions throughout the floorspace. For example, they provide a
multimedia discography of the records made during the "Big Bang of Country Music." The
information with the touchscreen display can be sorted and searched by the patron from the

The Metropolitan Museum of Art displays a beautiful display of Ancient Egyptian art. I can use
differentiated instruction while allowing my students to analyze art from different time periods. As a
teacher I can try to incorporate a field trip to this museum as it will be beneficial for all types of
learners. A field trip to this museum would be great for middle school and high school students.
Before the trip, I can provide my students with information about the time period in which we are
studying. This may include a power point and reading from our class textbook. I can also show a
video which gives insight to the time period and art. I can also provide them with a list of key terms
to understand that will help them during our museum trip. I would also provide a list of questions
that can serve as a guide during our visit to the museum. Visiting the museum will be beneficial to
auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. For auditory learners there are guided tours where you can
listen to information about the artwork as well as read the information on the piece of artwork. For
visual learners viewing and analyzing the art can help them learn about the time period. It will also
benefit kinesthetic learners who get a hands on approach to learning more about a time period. I
would ask all students to take notes on the trip and write down the names of the art they were most

Personal Narrative: The Metropolitan Art Museum
Sophomore year of High School we took a trip to New York to visit The Metropolitan Art Museum

bus and see what the museum held for us. We were greeted by our guide and we began our tour
which would only be part of this magnificent day. It must have been one of the first things we came
across and the most memorable piece not only the artwork that was in front of me but the feeling I

We continued through the museum by this time we broke off into small groups of our peers and I
walked those halls filled with all that great artwork snapping all the photos I could and taking in
every piece. It is a beautiful experience to be surrounded by such artwork, brilliance, and mastery of
craft. I felt like I travelled through time and countries with each piece was a different feeling but
none would compare to the ballerina. Before this I saw artwork and didn't understand it's depth and
nor did I want to but after I realized the talent, effort, and story behind some of the pieces I realized
art is the most intimate storytelling and expression. After this trip I was determined to find my place
in artwork and after a few failed attempts with many forms of media I found Graphic Design. It was
one of the most challenging but rewarding things I'd ever done in my life. Many times I found
myself frustrated with the programs and the even sometimes the outcome but I just worked harder

Metropolitan Museum Of Art Exhibition Report

  • 1. Metropolitan Museum Of Art Exhibition Report Exhibition Critique Essay II Larah Davenport ART 200 (Corbin) October 29, 2015 For this project I visited multiple online museums, but decided on The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Three pieces of artwork that I found to be interesting to me and that caught my eye are The Harvesters by Pieter Bruegel the Elder found at http://www.metmuseum.org, Open Window, Collioure by Henri Matisse found at http://www.nga.gov, and Christ Washing the Feet of His Disciples by Nicolas Bertin found at http://www.artic.edu. There are a lot of pieces of art to choose from in each museum, so I had to figure out a way to narrow it down to three. While browsing through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bertin tended to paint pictures of subject who are religious, mythological, and allegorical. This painting in particular portrays Christ washing Saint Peter's feet right after the Last Supper. There is a strong focal point in this painting and it is the man standing in the red robe with his hand on his chest. There is also a lot of activity in this painting as well because there is Christ to the left washing the feet surrounded by his disciples, the women in the background at the table, and the man to the right fixing his shoe. Bertin used a lot of facial expressions for each of the people in this painting from puzzled to humiliation. The size of this oil on panel painting is 1 ft 7.5 inches by 2 ft 4.75 ... • 3. How To Visit To A Metropolitan Museum Over the spring break, I chose to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with my friends Irene and Mei. We explored many exhibits such as The Egyptian Art, The American Wing, and Asian Art. I saw statues, ceramics, textiles, pottery, and paintings. I really enjoyed looking at the Sphinx and sarcophagus in the Egyptian Art section. The interior design of the museum was so well planned out in each exhibit from the lighting of the room to the smell. The interior design of the museum was so exquisite especially the atmosphere it created. I felt like I could explore the corners of the world in one building. I enjoyed the Asian Art and American Wing the most because there were so many displays on the Asian art collection and American Wing. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Countless art has been sought–after throughout history. Explorers, scientists, art collectors, politicians, and entrepreneurs from Western nations have sought out and removed art from the lands of great civilizations, often with the assistance and participation of local people and governments. Even as cultural property faces immediate danger today in conflict zones like Syria and Mali, there is circumstantial evidence that some nations are awakening to the political and foreign policy benefits that can flow from the repatriation of cultural patrimony. While on a different scale from World War II, historic structures, religious monuments, and other priceless ancient times continue to suffer collateral damage and manipulation in armed conflict. Relics have been stolen, smuggled and sold in what is a reported multibillion dollar underground market. They have become the illicit prizes of private collectors and the subject of legal claims against museums. Of the countless museums subject to legal claims, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City happens to be one of them. "The Metropolitan Museum has acquired thousands of works and objects of art from the antiquities". "For the past several years, the government of Turkey has warned U.S. and foreign museums (including The Metropolitan Museum of Art), that unless ancient objects from Turkish soil are given up on demand, Turkey will stop lending artworks" (The Committee for Cultural Policy, 2015). The Statue Of Liberty: Metropolitan Museum Of Art The Statue of Liberty combines architectural revivals in its pedestal, which was designed by "[t]he Paris–educated American architect" Richard Morris Hunt was named with neoclassical features (Bell and Abrams, 47). The pedestal "fully complemented – without rivaling – the majesty of the statue itself" (Bell and Abrams 47) although it is almost as high as the statue itself. The Statue has a height of X feet [confers X m] and the pedestal is eighty–nine feet [confers X m] (Baker 319) high. Besides it is "another truncated pyramid of concrete, faced by granite" (317), which in no way affects the statue's guise moreover it harmonizes with it. • 9. Short Trip To The Metropolitan Museum Museum experience Museum is a magic place for human beings to talk to the greatest artists in the history regardless of time and space. Visiting a museum is like taking a long walk in the history of human beings. Artworks are designated to record either the unique thoughts of artists or the indelible history of a period. A short trip of the Metropolitan Museum brings me not only the joy of visiting, but also the decorous feeling of baroque art. It is not surprise that many baroque art is devoted to demonstrate the majesty and solemnity. Ferdinando de' Medici (1663–1713), Grand Prince of Tuscany ,which is created by Giovanni Battista Foggini, deeply impress me. Metropolitan Museum Of Art Analysis Of the three Assignment prompts, it was "threshold" that spoke to me in its sense as a point of entry or beginning –– in my artistic interpretation, to a new reality or narrative. In exploring the literal, literary and figurative meaning of the word, I decided to create a narrative from each meaning, which resonated with me and stirred the creative juices necessary to begin. My first interpretation piece symbolizes the literal crossing over the threshold of my artistic journey from museum enthusiast to artist. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has had a tremendous impact on my study of art and art history, it was only fitting to include the powerful monuments guarding the threshold found in the Ancient Near Eastern Art Gallery of the Met, the ... • 13. Personal Narrative: Metropolitan Museum Of Art The day had finally came, it was July 21st, 2020. I had been waiting for this day for what seemed like forever! I was beyond excited that of all artists, I was chosen to escort the Interplanetary Ambassador around our world and culture. Once I greeted him at the New York Space Port, I decided to take him to our very own Metropolitan Museum of Art located here in NYC. The ride from the space port to the Museum was a little over two hours and felt like forever. On the way there the Ambassador asked many questions about our clothes, food, money, and many of our everyday things that are around us. Then, out of nowhere he asked me a question that changed my life as an artist completely. He said, "In my planet we have clothes and money and everything that you humans have, but we do not have art. Can you please explain to me what this art thing is?" From that day on, I have asked myself over and over again what art really is and if I ever did a good enough job explaining it to him. As an artist, I have been challenged in many ways with different projects, people, and so one. However never once in the thirty three years of being an artist, have I ... I told him that as the Ambassador he must reveal the world of art to his people once returning to his planet. • 19. The Civil War and American Art Exhibit at the New York... On Saturday, June 15 I attended the Civil War and American Art exhibit at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. There were a number of different people who were present on this occasion. I believe there were so many people there because this is one of the better known art galleries throughout New York. Additionally, the fact that today was part of the weekend probably contributed to the massive crowds of people present. Not everyone was there to attend the Civil War and American Art exhibit, however; there were several other exhibits taking place in different locations throughout the museum that day. The exhibit contained upwards of 20 photographs and at least 60 paintings. One of the most agreeable things about the works of art that I witnessed is that collectively, they assisted in recounting the sentiment that gripped the country during the war that threatened to sunder it. One could almost feel the initial enthusiasm as the war broke out, that was swiftly prolonged by numerous clashes over a period of years. There were works that alluded to an impending war, ones that depicted that war, and numerous ones that hinted at a hoped for ending in which the mightiness of the country would someday be restored. One of the pieces that I found to be the most moving was Frederic Edwin Church's "Our Banner in the Sky", which was painted during the war's outset in 1861. This is one of the pieces in which the enthusiasm for the war was quite clearly seen. In this work, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My friends and I had taken the subway and had gotten off a stop early. We had walked around Central Park before we finally saw the museum. The front steps were packed with many different groups of people. There were students on trips, tourists, and local residents. It was a magnificent sight to look at. Walking into the museum felt like walking into another world. I had initially walked in wanting to do my project on a piece in the Ancient Egyptian wing. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most pieces of Virgin and Child or Madonna and Child have the same traditional look to it, with the child sitting on the mother's lap and the mother, Mary, wearing the traditional cloak looking serious. This piece looks similar to Duccio's Madonna and Child, however it seems like there is more emotion being shown by both Virgin and Child, to each other, in Claus de Werve's sculpture. It looks like the mother is reading the book, in her lap, to her child. Since this piece is religious, the book would most likely be the Bible. The mother is reading the Bible to her child and sharing the stories in the Bible with him. From going to the museum and doing some research online, this piece by Claus de Werve was a gift from either the Duke of Burgundy or his wife, to the Franciscan Order of Poor Clares, a convent. (Metropolitan Museum of Art) It was a nice take on the iconic Madonna and Child or Virgin and Child. There were many different pieces of the Virgin and Child or Madonna and Child in the same wing, but this piece by Claus de Werve was the one that stood out the most. It was so simple yet so unique. • 23. Descriptive Essay About Metropolitan Museum The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and finest art museums in the world. The museum's collection consists of prehistory and present artifacts from every part of the globe. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located at 5th avenue and 82nd street in New York City. On Monday, November 5th, my brother and I took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum. It was a very long journey to get there. When we arrived at 34th street, we took the E train and transferred to Lexington Avenue to get to 86th street. From there we walked a couple blocks to get to the Metropolitan Museum. The reason why I took my brother is because he loves museums, so wanted someone who would not want to leave the museum after a short period of time due to lack of interest. Not only I enjoyed this trip, but also my brother enjoyed it maybe even more. Although this isn't the first time that I visit the Metropolitan museum, every visit never fails to amaze me by how massive it is. Not only the Metropolitan Museum is imposing from how it's beautifully designed from the outside, but also the inside of the building is mind boggling from the great amount of priceless of artwork it contains. When my brother and I first entered the doors of the museum, he was blown away. He couldn't believe how enormous the museum actually is. Not only local New Yorkers took a visit that day, but also Tourists from around the world. Our trip mostly focused upon Islamic and Ancient Egyptian art and we found it to be ... • 25. Metropolitan Museum Essay Metropolitan Museum As I look at the painting of The Adoration of The Shepherds, two artists, Andrea Mantegna and El Greco, showed it different ways with same subjects. First, the title of the paintings is about Jesus's birth. Andrea mantegna artist had lived from ca 1430 to 1506. He established his reputation when he was 20 years old. This painting is the evident of his highly individual style. He worked it during ca 1451 to 1453. He painted it in horizontal format with 153/4x217/8(40x55.6). He used tempera on a canvas that transferred from a wood. In difference, El Greco(Spain 141–1641) worked it with oil color on canvas by vertical format. The size is 125 5/8x707/8(319x180cm). This painting is a detailed realistic work. Also, the mountain and the land have many lines to show realism. However, Greco's painting is worked as tone by colors. It feels smooth, but is heavy surrounding. It is used by oil colors, so it is painted smoothly. It is worked very well. However, the Mantegna's painting is showed very brightly with tempera colors. The brushes are stroked strongly, but it is also worked well. The settle of the Greco's painting is in inside; however, Mantegna's painting has the landscape in outside. This painting seems that the time is arternoon. Greoc's painting is focused to angels who are placed on top. However, Mantegna's painting is focused to Holy Maria who is placed in middle side. One of the pieces is a beautiful print, A Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare, Act 4, Scene 1), is a print which was engraved after Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802 – 1873), from London. The British engraver, Samuel Cousins (1801 – 1887), created the print in November 1857, using a mixed method engraving process with mezzotint, on chine coolé. Upon viewing the print, it is engaging as the characters are expressive and detailed despite the absence of bright colors. The reproduction represents Bottom, the weaver with a head of an ass being favored by the fairy queen Titania. They are surrounded by fairies, and enchanted animals while the sprite, Puck watches from behind. The technique of mezzotint originated in the seventeenth century by a German inventor, Ludwig von Siegen. Mezzotint was a laborious method which used an engraved metal plate. The highly skilled artist, engraved or pricked by hand, the plate making numerous small holes that would hold ink. When the plate was filled with ink, it would create large areas of tone to reproduce a painting. During the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, "mezzotints were the only means most people had of becoming acquainted with the paintings of major artists". After the invention of photography in the nineteenth century, the use of mezzotint was rare. The Met is an art museum in New York City that has a variety of ancient artwork from different cultures and time periods. There is paintings and sculptures from Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome and Greece. The museum is additionally home to artwork from many different time periods including ancient Near Eastern Art, Middle Ages and Europe during the Renaissance. The Met also has artwork from many different religions such as Christianity and Islam. Each section in the museum had a specific artwork that attracted my attention. On the first floor of the Met Museum is the Greek and Roman Art. The Greek and Roman section has hundreds of art work ranging from the Neolithic period to Roman Emperor Constantine. In the Greek and Roman section there is many portraits and sculptures including the statue of Emperor Augustus, the statue of Aphrodite, and the Marble female figure. The sculptures in this section range in different shapes, sizes and colors and are made with a variety of materials. The sculptures depict emperors, Kings, Queens, Gods and Goddesses of the time. Much of the statues in this section are missing key parts such as arms, legs and the head due to the fact that they were damaged before being bought to the museum. The main Neoclassical architectural style building is located on the eastern edge of Central Park in New York City, New York. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. It was founded in 1870 with a mission to collect, preserve, and display works of art. In 1866 a group of Americans gathered at a restaurant to celebrate the Fourth of July. After dinner, John Jay, a prominent lawyer gave a speech proposing that he and his compatriots decided to create a "national institution and gallery of art." In the next four years, they convinced American civic leaders, art collectors, and philanthropists to support the project, and finally in 1870 the Metropolitan Museum of Art was incorporated. During the 1870s the museum was housed in two different locations in New York City, first in a building at 681 Fifth Avenue and later at 128 West 14th Street. In 1880 the museum moved to its present location in Central Park on Fifth Avenue between 80th and 84th Streets. The museum moved to this land to make a permanent home for the collections. • 33. Metropolitan Museum Of Art Analysis This paper will analyze the iconography of two medieval works from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both of them depict the appearance of the resurrected Jesus Christ to his follower Mary Magdalene (Gospel of John 20:11–17). According to the Bible, three days after Christ died by crucifixion and was buried, he was resurrected. On that day, Mary Magdalene came to his tomb early in the morning, alone, and found the tomb empty. As she was weeping in the garden outside the tomb, she recognized a man she thought was a gardener, and asked him what had become of Jesus' body. When the man spoke her name, Mary Magdalene recognized that he was Jesus Christ, who had been resurrected. As she reached out to embrace Jesus, he motioned for her to stay back, saying "Do not touch me," because he had not yet ascended into heaven. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tapestry was woven of wool, silk, and gilt–metal wrapped thread between 1500 and 1520 CE. It presents Jesus standing just right of center, in front of a large fruit tree, with Mary Magdalene kneeling to his right. Because Mary and Jesus are centered horizontally in the composition, and they are both large (between 2 and 3 feet tall), the viewer can determine that they are the primary subjects in the tapestry. Christ is wearing a red robe, and the wounds on his hands and feet from where he was nailed to the cross are visible. These signs identify the figure as Christ, indicating his mortality and recent death. He is holding a shovel in his left hand, which explains Mary's mistake in identifying him as a gardener. The reason I chose these specific sites was the first images I saw which made me want to explore the webpages. I will be comparing the visual quality of the homepage, pictures, text, and content along with the overall quality of the two sites. I will go into detail about the differences and which site, in my opinion, would be more enjoyable based on their website. Upon first glance of their homepages, the two sites look completely different in style. When The Metropolitan Museum homepage loaded, I was in awe of the bold image of a man's face covered with ink art. It was eye–catching at first, but then I noticed there was no other graphics or pictures on the homepage. The one slide show picture did not even fill the screen from side to side either. It left a kind of boring, bland feeling with me. Then I clicked on the link for the National Gallery of Art homepage. As this site loaded, it filled the computer screen with side to side full color. The background was a beautiful picture of an elegant cathedral–like building. In the middle of this eye–catching background was a slide menu where each group had its very own beautiful picture. Another refreshing feature is that the background image changes often so that each time I visited it is was a different background image. Descriptive Essay: The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Esther Jacob POLSC 110 Ms. Logan April 2017 The Metropolitan Museum of Art I grew up in a small town in upstate New York where the closest supermarket was a 15–minute drive. A few times a year my mom would take me and my siblings to the Big Apple and expose us to city life. I always loved the city – the lights, the skyscrapers, the street filled with people – it captivated me. One of the places we would visit was the Metropolitan Museum of Art, otherwise known as the Met. I remember walking through the museum in awe – everything was so big and beautiful. The Met then took an "eight–year lease on the building from the Whitney Museum, with the option to renew another five and a half years, until approximately 2029" (www.wikepedia.org). The Met Breuer was created to further expand the Met's modern and contemporary art collection. As New York Times art critic Roberta Smith said on the Met Breuer's opening, "The Met [Fifth Avenue] is huge and old, with a history of treating contemporary art as an afterthought." The Met Breuer focuses on the beauty of modern and contemporary art. The Met Breuer's main exhibit is called "Unfinished – Thoughts Left Visible." This exhibit displays over 200 works of art that were left incomplete either intentionally or unintentionally. This final observation brings me to my main question which my paper will address: with a collection as encyclopedic as the Metropolitan Museum of Art's, why would a curator want to bring 48 artistically and religiously significant artifacts from Hildesheim, Germany to New York for an exhibition? • 55. The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Essay Positioned alongside Central Park within the heart of New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and most influential art museums in the world. The Met houses an extensive collection of curated works that spans throughout various time periods and different cultures. The context of museums, especially one as influential as the Met, inherently predisposes its visitors to a set of understandings that subtly influence how they interpret and ultimately construct meanings about each individual object within a museum. By analyzing two separate works on exhibit at the Met, I will pose the argument that museums offer a unique expression of a world view that is dictated through every element of its construction. An object placed on display behind a glass case inside a museum would hold a vastly different meaning if it were for sale by a street vendor, such as the individuals who set up their tables only a few feet away from the Met. Brent Plate in Religion, Art, and Visual Culture argues that "objects obtain different meanings in different locations and historical settings." The different meanings that objects are able to obtain is attributed to the relationships that are established between the object itself and the environment that it is located in. These relationships often involve the kind of audience that a museum attracts, where the work is exhibited, and how the exhibit is laid out. Museums subsequently have the ability ... Despite the almost unbearable heat and humidity that hung in the air, visiting museums under these climate conditions is a welcome respite from a suffocating, yet bright summer afternoon. One of the first things that I noticed about The Met was its exterior architecture. Like many historical buildings and museums, The Met's architecture is highly influenced by European architecture; in this case, it appears as though the architecture is attempting to emulate the gothic style. Once inside the daunting faรงade, I was pleasantly surprised to see how richly illuminated the museum was. What made it even more remarkable was that much of the light appeared to permeate through skylights that had been built into the building's ceiling. Moreover, I was pleasantly surprised to see that The Met was considerably less crowded than the American Museum of Natural History, which I had visited the day before. Three, one can see native symbols on the quilt that the son is leaning on. The painting is painted as if the viewers are on land watching the father and son rowing the boat towards possibly the end of the Mississippi river. The water is clear and it reflects everything in the boat. Both the father and son are calm. The son is lounging and the father is smoking a pipe giving off a calm mood. Among the hundreds of galleries, the modernist room 901 is located in the back, left side of the building. There, the three main styles present are fauvism, cubism and surrealism. The museum labels show how the paintings are from 1910 to 1950, however, after looking more closely it becomes clear that most of them range from 1920s to 1930s. Majority of the pieces are oil on canvas, with very few exceptions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art displays a beautiful display of Ancient Egyptian art. I can use differentiated instruction while allowing my students to analyze art from different time periods. As a teacher I can try to incorporate a field trip to this museum as it will be beneficial for all types of learners. A field trip to this museum would be great for middle school and high school students. Before the trip, I can provide my students with information about the time period in which we are studying. This may include a power point and reading from our class textbook. I can also show a video which gives insight to the time period and art. I can also provide them with a list of key terms to understand that will help them during our museum trip. I would also provide a list of questions that can serve as a guide during our visit to the museum. Visiting the museum will be beneficial to auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. For auditory learners there are guided tours where you can listen to information about the artwork as well as read the information on the piece of artwork. For visual learners viewing and analyzing the art can help them learn about the time period. It will also benefit kinesthetic learners who get a hands on approach to learning more about a time period. • 77. Personal Narrative: The Metropolitan Art Museum Sophomore year of High School we took a trip to New York to visit The Metropolitan Art Museum we spent the full day immersing ourselves in the artwork. It was the trip that would inspire me to become an artist. We arrived to this momentous building with lots of stairs I was eager to be off the bus and see what the museum held for us. We were greeted by our guide and we began our tour which would only be part of this magnificent day. It must have been one of the first things we came across and the most memorable piece not only the artwork that was in front of me but the feeling I felt that day. It was "The Little Fourteen–Year–Old Dancer" a bronze cast by Edgar Degas it was mixed media of sorts she was wearing a cotton skirt with a satin hair ribbon ... We continued through the museum by this time we broke off into small groups of our peers and I walked those halls filled with all that great artwork snapping all the photos I could and taking in every piece. It is a beautiful experience to be surrounded by such artwork, brilliance, and mastery of craft. I felt like I travelled through time and countries with each piece was a different feeling but none would compare to the ballerina. Before this I saw artwork and didn't understand it's depth and nor did I want to but after I realized the talent, effort, and story behind some of the pieces I realized art is the most intimate storytelling and expression. After this trip I was determined to find my place in artwork and after a few failed attempts with many forms of media I found Graphic Design. It was one of the most challenging but rewarding things I'd ever done in my life. Many times I found myself frustrated with the programs and the even sometimes the outcome but I just worked harder and harder and in the end when I finally did get the results I wanted it was the most accomplished I'd ever ...
