1. Forward Policy
From whichever side of the gun control debate one stands, it is clear that
compromises can be made to lessen the impact of gun violence across America. The
laws in place stop the majority of people that should not possess firearms from
acquiring them, but there are exceptions and ways around them if one desperately
wants a gun. One major way to obtain a firearm without a paper trail is through gun
shows. All across America a person can go to a gun show and pick up a gun from a
seller without a background check or registration. All gun dealers require a
background check and registration if the firearm is a pistol. So why aren’t gun shows
the same way? The argument against background checks at gun shows is that it is
not the governments right to know what guns citizens buy. However, the purpose of
those background checks is to keep those who have no business from owning guns
from acquiring them. They are quick and simple and ensure that the one buying the
firearm should be allowed to legally possess a firearm. Taking these precautions
would be no hindrance to those who are law-abiding citizens with a clean record
and could possibly prevent future gun violence committed by those who could have
been stopped from ever obtaining a firearm.
