Gun Control: What should we do?
16 February 2014

I believe that we do have a gun problem in the United States. The problem is that way too
many people are getting their hands on guns, especially those with high power and are harming
others. Most of these violent acts take place by criminals, or those who have something mentally
wrong. There are also many other cases of accidental harm to others because of guns. The other
problem with guns in the United States is the debate and controversy over gun control laws.
The question “What do we do,” is a hard one to answer. I don’t believe there will ever be
an actual solution to the gun control policy. Coming up with a solution would mean that
everyone would have to agree on a policy, and there are always going to be people who see
things differently and in different perspectives with different situations. The best thing I think
that can happen is that there becomes a compromise between the people for more gun legislation
and those for less gun legislation.
There are many different policies that can be proposed, but there are some specific ones
that I am for. I believe that if a person is going to own a gun then they should have to go through
a gun safety course on how to use their gun. I also believe that they should have to register each
of their guns, and have a licensed to be renewed. Most people do not like this idea because they
don’t believe it is anyone’s business how many guns that they own, but if they are not going to
use these guns for violent crimes then why should it matter who knows what kind of gun that
they should use? Also, I believe that all guns should be unloaded and under at least one lock if
they are going to be stored in a home or around people who are not the gun owner themselves.
Another big thing that I believe in is that each person should not only undergo a background
check, but also a mental health check in which the results can be confidential between the
government issued doctor and the person registering for the gun. If a person is not able to pass a
mental health check, then they should not be able to purchase a gun. Overall, if you believe
strongly about this situation there are things that can be done to make a difference and a change,
but there will never be any guarantees on the policies made because those who want to cause
harm will find a way to with or without guns.
