A. Historical Development Perspective
1.a.Pre-scientific management era
In early days people work alone or in group however work conditions were brutal.People used
to work from morning to evening under intolerable conditions.
b.Industrial Revolution (1800’s)
Robert Own ,a young factory owner from Wales refused to employ children and taught
workers for cleanliness and improved work conditions
Andrew Ure published book The Philosophy of Manufacturers and recognized mechanical
and commercial parts of manufacturing . He added human factor at work stations like medical
treatment and ventilation and sickness payment to workers.

Elton Mayo ( Harvard associates) conducted a study at Western Electric Company , Howthrone Plant to know the
behavior of men at work.In the study of seven years, they knew about workers productivity, effect of changes in
work hours and related working conditions on workers productivity, workers attitude and sentiment towards work
and effect of social system on work at organization.

upgrading technology and growing sized organization. Mayo enlisted effect of social forces like trade unions and
minority groups.

Theory X Theory Y
• The typical Person dislikes work and will avoid
if possible
• Work is as natural as play or rest
• The typical person lacks responsibility has
little ambition and seeks security above all
• People are not inherently lazy. They have
become that way as a result of experience
and applied self direction and self control in
the service of objectives.
• Most people must be coerced ,controlled And
threatened with punishment to get them to
work
• People have potential . Under proper
conditions , they learn to accept and seek
responsibility. They have imagination and
creativity that can be applied to work.
6.OB in the modern Era: OB has changed into a systematic field of study.
The key elements of OB are, technology, organizational structure and
external and internal environment . OB helps to understand , predict and
manage the behavior of people in work. OB is even applied in HRM .
