Introduction to Organizational Behaviour
Syllabus
Organization: An organization is a consciously coordinated social or human unit,
composed of two or more people that function on a relatively continuous basis to
achieve a common goal or set of goals.
Behaviour: Behaviour includes anything a person or animal does that can be observed
in some way.
Concept of Organizational Behavior (OB)
5
Organizational Behaviour (OB): OB is directly concerned with the understanding,
prediction and control (management) of human behaviour in organizations. OB is human
tool for human benefits. It applies broadly to the behaviour of people in all types of
organizations.
Organization behaviour is directly concerned with the understanding , prediction and
management of human behaviour in organizations
Fred Luthans
Organization behaviour is the field of study that investigates the impact that
individuals, groups and structures have on behaviour within organization for the purpose of
applying such knowledge towards improving an organization’s effectiveness

Foundation of OB
A. Historical Evolution/Development Perspective
B. Basic Assumption Perspective

Stage 1 Historical Origins (Pre-scientific Management Era)
Stage 2 Scientific Management Era (Early 1900s)
Stage 3 Hawthorne Studies Era (1924 – 1932)
Stage 4 Human Relations Movement Era
Stage 5 Theory 'X' and Theory 'Y' Era
Stage 6 OB in the Modern Era (OB Today)
From Historical Evolution/ Development Perspective
Foundation of OB
A. Historical Development Perspective
1.a.Pre-scientific management era
In early days people work alone or in group however work conditions were brutal.People used
to work from morning to evening under intolerable conditions.
b.Industrial Revolution (1800’s)
Robert Own ,a young factory owner from Wales refused to employ children and taught
workers for cleanliness and improved work conditions
Andrew Ure published book The Philosophy of Manufacturers and recognized mechanical
and commercial parts of manufacturing . He added human factor at work stations like medical
treatment and ventilation and sickness payment to workers.
2. Scientific management era ( Early 1900’s)
F. W Taylor, the father of scientific management brought changes in the management
field. He advocated right workers for right jobs with training and remuneration however his
main contribution is in field of technical efficiency.in 1920 ,Whiting Williams published “What
on the Workers Mind” to give emphasis to human resource.

3.Howthrone Studies Era ( 1924-1932)
Elton Mayo ( Harvard associates) conducted a study at Western Electric Company , Howthrone Plant to know the
behavior of men at work.In the study of seven years, they knew about workers productivity, effect of changes in
work hours and related working conditions on workers productivity, workers attitude and sentiment towards work
and effect of social system on work at organization.
4.Human Relation Movement Era (1950)
Correction on cultural lag on Howthrone studies was done in Human relation Era by Mayo and his associates.
Likewise,Mayo added the skill for managers in building effective organizations in different situations like
upgrading technology and growing sized organization. Mayo enlisted effect of social forces like trade unions and
minority groups.
5.Theory X and Theory Y Era (1957)
Douglas Macgragor Published The Human Side of Enterprise and included Theory X and Theory Y to clearify
assumptions on people

Theory X Theory Y
• The typical Person dislikes work and will avoid
if possible
• Work is as natural as play or rest
• The typical person lacks responsibility has
little ambition and seeks security above all
• People are not inherently lazy. They have
become that way as a result of experience
and applied self direction and self control in
the service of objectives.
• Most people must be coerced ,controlled And
threatened with punishment to get them to
work
• People have potential . Under proper
conditions , they learn to accept and seek
responsibility. They have imagination and
creativity that can be applied to work.
6.OB in the modern Era: OB has changed into a systematic field of study.
The key elements of OB are, technology, organizational structure and
external and internal environment . OB helps to understand , predict and
manage the behavior of people in work. OB is even applied in HRM .
