Dental caries is a common disease that results in the demineralization and destruction of tooth structure. It has historically been treated using a surgical model where decayed tooth material was removed and replaced with artificial fillings. However, this led to larger cavities over time and increased need for retreatment as secondary caries developed. Newer prevention-focused strategies aim to conserve more natural tooth structure by shifting to a medical model of disease management.
