C
(Accept any suitable answer.)
Malaysia is a multicultural and multiracial
country. This is best seen in its variety
of music. Religious music is enjoyed
by the older generation, while younger
Malaysians prefer pan-Asian pop music.
In rural areas, folk music and lullabies
are more popular. Due to the increasing
influence of Western culture, Western
music is becoming more popular in major
cities.

complexion is really bad because
I have acne. Can you suggest
suitable ways to get rid of acne?
You :	Sure. I used to have many
pimples on my face too. My
mother advised me to use some
fresh aloe vera juice and it
worked.
Friend	:	Can you elaborate on that?
You :	Just slit the leaf of an aloe vera
plant and use a spoon to scrape
some of the slimy pulp. Rub a
little on your face and leave it
there for a few minutes. Then,
wash it off.
Friend	:	How often should I do this?
You :	Do this as often as you can.
You can also rub your face with
the inside of a banana peel to

eat a lot of vegetables and fresh
fruits too.

You :	My tummy hurt and I had food

Friend	:	Do you know what caused it?
You :	I think it was the fried rice I ate
for lunch. I was the only one
who had it. I think the prawns
were not fresh or a fly must have
landed on the food. I had bad
diarrhoea and I vomited a lot.
Friend	:
That’s awful. Did you go to the

You :
No. My mum gave me some
ginger tea with lemon.
Friend	:	Did you feel better after that?
You :	Yes, I did. It took a whole day for
me to recover, so I had to miss
school. At least it wasn’t a sore
throat. My mum makes us gargle

One theme of this poem is that heroes
can be found in real life. The persona’s
dad is not afraid of many things that
people are usually afraid of, such as
late-night films, ghosts and vampires.
However, he is terrified of a spider, and
the persona learns that his mum is brave
enough to remove it.

Inventor: Percy Spencer
Year of Invention: 1945
Problems of Early Ovens: Too large, too

Year of Sale of Microwave Ovens: 1967
B
(Accept any suitable answer.)
Percy Spencer invented the microwave
oven by accident in 1945 when the
microwaves from a radar set melted
the chocolate bar in his pocket. He
experimented using microwaves to heat
food. The earlier ovens were not popular.
Microwave ovens were sold commercially
in 1967 when they were smaller and
cheaper.
C
Do you know what an (^) inventor is? An
inventor is (T) someone who comes up
with an idea for the first time. You must be
creative, (P) hard-working and persistent.
You must not be afraid to fail. Instead
of getting discouraged, you must ask
yourself what went wrong and try again.
Did you know that Bill Gates
experienced many failures before
achieving (Sp) success? His first
invention, a machine that was supposed
to create reports for roadway engineers
from raw traffic data, failed to process the
data when he tried to present it to a traffic
employee. (P) Yet, he wasn’t discouraged
from trying again. He was able to create
a company (P) that completely changed
the computer industry, and we all know
just how successful that was for him.

some good points and I think that
this is one of the risks of shopping
online. It makes me rethink the idea
of ordering clothes online.
	4	(Accept any suitable answer.)
I think that online shopping is a
good idea, depending on what you
buy. My mother buys her groceries
by shopping online. We stay in a
condominium, so she doesn’t want
the hassle of carrying the groceries
up to our apartment. With online
shopping, the groceries are delivered
to our doorstep. However, she never
buys fresh food this way as she
wants to choose the food herself and
check its quality.

Weng :	Why do you want to go there?
Isn’t it far from your house?
Salleh	:	Things there are a lot cheaper.
I can buy more at an overall
cheaper price.
Weng :
Do you really need to buy in
bulk? I think you might end up
wasting a lot of the products,
especially if you don’t use them
all. You may also have trouble
storing the items, especially if
they are big.
Salleh	:	Sure, I don’t have to buy in bulk,
but my family shares everything
we buy. My mother shares the
extra items with her friends.
Weng :	I see. But is it worth the trouble
and cost? How do you decide
who pays first? What happens if
the others change their minds?
Salleh	:	My mum and her friends take
turns to shop and they only
buy when there are good
offers available. They have a
good system and everyone
seems happy. For the most part,
everyone always chips in.
Weng :	I’m glad to hear that. However, I
suggest you check all the expiry
dates.Sometimes things on sale
are old stock or inferior goods.
Salleh:
That’s good advice. I will
definitely do that.

In order to reduce air pollution, we
should take some preventive measures.
First, we can reduce the traffic on the
road by carpooling and using more
public transport. Vehicles should also be
serviced regularly. Next, we must also
check on factories that emit toxic fumes.
We should also impose heavier penalties
and set up factories and power plants far
away from residential areas. In addition
to that, we have to stop clearing valuable
forests. We need to plant more trees and
encourage the development of more
green projects.
Reduce, reuse and recycle as much
as possible. We can give away things that
we no longer use like clothes, shoes, toys
and books. This way, they will not end
up in a landfill. If you cannot give them
away, remember that plastic, paper, glass
and other materials can be recycled or
reused. If something cannot be recycled,
at least put it into a rubbish bin instead
of littering! Lastly, use eco-friendly and
energy-efficient products whenever
possible, such as reusable shopping
bags and containers.

An inventor is (T) someone who comes up with an idea for the first time. You must be creative, (P) hard-working and persistent. You must not be afraid to fail. (ii) Kamal was very disappointed because the shirt didn’t fit him. The buttons and the shirt colour were different from the picture. 2 At first, Kamal thought that buying a shirt online was a great idea and he was excited about it.After he received the shirt, he was disappointed that he would have to send it back to get a refund. He no longer wanted to risk buying clothes online again. 3 (Accept any suitable answer.) I was surprised when I read the email. I have never bought clothes online, but I have friends who have done so. They have had good experiences, so I was surprised by Kamal’s bad experience. However, the email has some good points and I think that this is one of the risks of shopping online. It makes me rethink the idea of ordering clothes online. 4 (Accept any suitable answer.) I think that online shopping is a good idea, depending on what you buy. My mother buys her groceries by shopping online. We stay in a condominium, so she doesn’t want the hassle of carrying the groceries up to our apartment. With online shopping, the groceries are delivered to our doorstep. However, she never buys fresh food this way as she wants to choose the food herself and check its quality. Weng : Hi, Salleh! Where are you rushing off to? Salleh : I have to get home. I’m going to do some grocery shopping at the hypermarket in town. Weng : Why do you want to go there? Isn’t it far from your house? Salleh : Things there are a lot cheaper. I can buy more at an overall cheaper price. Weng : Do you really need to buy in bulk? I think you might end up wasting a lot of the products, especially if you don’t use them all. You may also have trouble storing the items, especially if they are big. Salleh : Sure, I don’t have to buy in bulk, but my family shares everything we buy. My mother shares the extra items with her friends. Weng : I see. But is it worth the trouble and cost? How do you decide who pays first? What happens if the others change their minds? Salleh : My mum and her friends take turns to shop and they only buy when there are good offers available. They have a good system and everyone seems happy. For the most part, everyone always chips in. Weng : I’m glad to hear that. However, I suggest you check all the expiry dates.Sometimes things on sale are old stock or inferior goods. Salleh: That’s good advice. I will definitely do that. LITERATURE IN ACTION A Honesty and Integrity – Geoff felt that his entry should be disqualified once he realised that he may have gotten his idea from a book he had read years ago./ Geoff was willing to give up his medal to Lynne. Fair Play – Lynne thought it was unfair for a cheater to win./Mr Velos reversed his decision when he learnt that Lynne’s story was more original. The Cost of Being Judgemental – Lynne strongly believed that Geoff was hiding the story he had stolen his idea from./ Although Lynne won the medal she wanted, she was appalled at the idea of Geoff being disqualified. First, we can reduce the traffic on the road by carpooling and using more public transport. Vehicles should also be serviced regularly. Next, we must also check on factories that emit toxic fumes. We should also impose heavier penalties and set up factories and power plants far away from residential areas. In addition to that, we have to stop clearing valuable forests. We need to plant more trees and encourage the development of more green projects. Reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible. We can give away things that we no longer use like clothes, shoes, toys and books. This way, they will not end up in a landfill. If you cannot give them away, remember that plastic, paper, glass and other materials can be recycled or reused.
