Financial management in higher education has been under scrutiny for the way money is
handled. There are many opportunities for employees to personally benefit from the money
designated for universities. All universities should strive to educate and monitor financial
transactions to ensure that the public trust is unquestioned.
When a person acts for the public good they strive to increase the welfare of those around
them other than themselves. Our policies should be established in a way that does not require
a person to act against their own self-interest. The policies should provide a well thought-out
framework in which to work so that the temptation to benefit one is not an option. People have
a tendency to operate from a position of self-interest. Self interest can be referred to as
“egoism”. Acting for the public good requires that the person is motivated by their own ego but
the action is to increase the public good.
Collectivism is when a group of persons are benefitted by a certain action. In higher education
we work individually and in groups to accomplish the goals of the university. When a group
works to better the institution in which they also benefit is collectivism. Social dilemmas arise
when a person or group have to choose who will benefit from a particular action. Some groups
benefit while others do not. Another dilemma is when the benefits of a decision are greater for
one group than another.
We say that a person is altruistic if their motives are to benefit one or more persons other than
themselves. Principlism is motivation to uphold a morale principle. It is necessary to
understand these various concepts to lay the foundation for understanding how to properly
manage money.
As administrators in higher education we are expected to act in a manner that is ethically and
fiscally responsible. We have a social responsibility to do the jobs we are paid to do to the best
of our abilities. Fiduciary responsibility means that we are responsible for the proper financial
management of the money we control. Anyone who experiences the effects of the activities of
the university are called “stakeholders”. A healthy tension occurs when our fiduciary
responsibilities are contrasted with our social responsibilities. This tension is called the
“stakeholder’s paradox”.

In addition to its economic role in society, business also has several other roles and responsibilities towards society viz. responsible conduct of business activities while pursuing economic gains; the social and environmental responsibilities of the business towards its stakeholders; and business’s contributions that would benefit the society at large. Companies around the globe are recognizing the importance of engaging in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that is crucial to their survival and growth. It is evident that when an organization integrates appropriate CSR practices in its strategy that embed the societal and environmental concerns, these practices undoubtedly bring tangible benefits to the business along with a sustainable competitive advantage.
It is mandatory for companies to conform to the legal responsibilities as they are prescribed by law. So, organizations have no alternative but to comply with the basic law of the land. On the other hand, Ethical responsibilities of corporations are taken as additional responsibilities going beyond legal compliance and profit making and include those that firms believe are the right things to do. Ethical responsibility originates from humanistic, religious and moral orientation of corporations. The voluntary responsibilities to the society refer to the discretionary nature of obligations rooted in the altruistic principles which are not required by law. The motivation for such sense of responsibilities arises from the reciprocal obligation of giving back to the society in exchange of profit and power that companies receive from society. This school of thought gave rise to CSR which is seen as continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce, their families, local community, and society at all, including the environment. Even though Bangladesh is one of the world’s poorest countries, CSR activities in Bangladesh have risen significantly in importance. It is believed that the interest in CSR initiatives in Bangladesh has been fueled by MNCs’ global activities.

When a person acts for the public good they strive to increase the welfare of those around
them other than themselves. Our policies should be established in a way that does not require
a person to act against their own self-interest. The policies should provide a well thought-out
framework in which to work so that the temptation to benefit one is not an option. People have
a tendency to operate from a position of self-interest. Self interest can be referred to as
“egoism”. Acting for the public good requires that the person is motivated by their own ego but
the action is to increase the public good.
Collectivism is when a group of persons are benefitted by a certain action. In higher education
we work individually and in groups to accomplish the goals of the university. When a group
works to better the institution in which they also benefit is collectivism. Social dilemmas arise
when a person or group have to choose who will benefit from a particular action. Some groups
benefit while others do not. Another dilemma is when the benefits of a decision are greater for
one group than another.
We say that a person is altruistic if their motives are to benefit one or more persons other than
themselves. Principlism is motivation to uphold a morale principle. It is necessary to
understand these various concepts to lay the foundation for understanding how to properly
manage money.
As administrators in higher education we are expected to act in a manner that is ethically and
fiscally responsible. We have a social responsibility to do the jobs we are paid to do to the best
of our abilities. Fiduciary responsibility means that we are responsible for the proper financial
management of the money we control. Anyone who experiences the effects of the activities of
the university are called “stakeholders”. A healthy tension occurs when our fiduciary
responsibilities are contrasted with our social responsibilities. This tension is called the
“stakeholder’s paradox”.

The purpose of business is to make money. However, the profit motive is sometimes viewed as less than virtuous because it emphasizes self-interest. Nevertheless, self-interest is not the same as selfishness, which emphasizes one's own interests at others' expense. Self interest is simply a concern for financial reward and is arguably necessary if society is to be maximally productive and efficiently allocate its resources. Business is an inseparable and embedded part of the society. In addition to its economic role in society, business also has several other roles and responsibilities towards society viz. responsible conduct of business activities while pursuing economic gains; the social and environmental responsibilities of the business towards its stakeholders; and business’s contributions that would benefit the society at large. Companies around the globe are recognizing the importance of engaging in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that is crucial to their survival and growth. It is evident that when an organization integrates appropriate CSR practices in its strategy that embed the societal and environmental concerns, these practices undoubtedly bring tangible benefits to the business along with a sustainable competitive advantage.
It is mandatory for companies to conform to the legal responsibilities as they are prescribed by law. So, organizations have no alternative but to comply with the basic law of the land. On the other hand, Ethical responsibilities of corporations are taken as additional responsibilities going beyond legal compliance and profit making and include those that firms believe are the right things to do. Ethical responsibility originates from humanistic, religious and moral orientation of corporations. The voluntary responsibilities to the society refer to the discretionary nature of obligations rooted in the altruistic principles which are not required by law. The motivation for such sense of responsibilities arises from the reciprocal obligation of giving back to the society in exchange of profit and power that companies receive from society. This school of thought gave rise to CSR which is seen as continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce, their families, local community, and society at all, including the environment. Even though Bangladesh is one of the world’s poorest countries, CSR activities in Bangladesh have risen significantly in importance. It is believed that the interest in CSR initiatives in Bangladesh has been fueled by MNCs’ global activities.
How to Develop a framework for CSR and Sustainability

- 2. Instead of analyzing foreign places which I don’t really know, it's better to analyze university in which I’m already are.
- 3. CSR is an investment …and should be measured like other investments. Since I don’t have public data on the performance of our university so I can only analyze the presence of initiatives that are visible from outside.
- 4. Our university doesn’t have much information on the topic of CSR The only things which I could find are some kind of grant for the best MBA student (possessing a Belarusian company) and discounts on education for performance in social activities. 🤔 C SR?
- 5. We could conclude that we speak more about CSR than we do to implement it Yes, there are some student-funded activities, but university participation and promoting them needs serious improvement.
- 6. People in our countries have never heard of the CSR It would be strange just to expect that average student would know lots of things about it, let alone creating some useful activities. In that case indicative should include management decision to invest time and some resources into proper ideology distribution.
- 7. One course isn’t enough You should communicate at least basic principles of CSR throat the whole experience of studying in university, make it part of the university brand. It is a good idea to start from adding a CSR section on the visible spot of the university website.
- 8. System of benefits for CSR projects, should be standardized and approved on the high-level. We need to use practical motivations: great discounts or standardized bonuses for attendance (a good example is P.E. lessons which could be substituted by visiting a certain sports event)
- 9. Here the things we could do:
- 10. Health care program Blood donation: Arrange blood donations regularly and give great benefits for that. This creates awareness to the mass that regularly donation of blood makes a person healthy and also help others who require blood. From the blood donation activity, people can easily know their blood group and also free checking of blood diseases.
- 11. Environment • Tree plantation: As a part of this society leading university also think it has some responsibilities toward society. To minimize pollution LUSSC also goes for tree plantation. • Creation of separated trash bins everywhere. Also, include batteries recycling.
- 12. General initiative program It would be great to offer some lucrative alternative for people that study business. For example: create CSR project which make impact measure and document it in some basic but convincing form get a bonus like automatic exam pass (not only CSR teacher, enforce this principle) lots of additional P.E lessons or just significant discounts on the tuition fee (requirements should not require lot’s of other irrelevant activities)
- 13. Proper brand creation Turn benefits that we already have into marketing strengths for university. For example, explain that we don't require paper books, and mainly are using modern electronic screen and book
