Anemia definition and classification. General Signs and symptoms of Anemia . Anemia is strictly defined as a decrease in red blood cell (RBC) mass. The function of the RBC is to deliver oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. This is accomplished by using hemoglobin (Hb), a tetramer protein composed of heme and globin. In anemia, a decrease in the number of RBCs transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide impairs the body’s ability for gas exchange.[1]The decrease may result from blood loss, increased destruction of RBCs (hemolysis), or decreased production of RBCs.

3. Introduction
√ A person with anemia may not have any symptoms,
depending on the underlying cause, and no symptoms may
be noticed, as the anemia is initially mild, and then the
symptoms become worse as the anemia worsens.
√ Symptoms of anemia can come on quickly or slowly.
√ Early on there may be few or no symptoms.
√ If the anemia continues slowly (chronic), the body may
adapt and compensate for this change. In this case, no
symptoms may appear until the anemia becomes more
severe.
