8. READ,TRANSLATE AND RETELL .
Just as winter began to seem unbearably long, preparation for Easter
began. In old Russia the coming of Easter was a yearly drama, with a
beginning, a middle and an end and even a curious epilogue. Two months
of every year were spent preparing for and celebrating the Resurrection
and the coming of spring. First there were the eight days of carnival
called Maslenitsa, or ‘’Butter Week’’. All restaurants and taverns
served blini. In Moscow, in St. Petersburg, in provincial towns and tiny
villages, there were celebrations-figures in masks, traveling troupes of
actors entertained the peasants. No meat of any kind, no milk of any kind,
eggs or butter was permitted during the Great Fast. For 7 weeks public
amusement, dancing and theatrical performances were forbidden. The one
happy interruption to the Great Fast was Branch Sunday (Palm Sunday),
which the Russians call Verbnoe Voskresene.Singing hymns, people
сarried the branches that had been consecrated in church. Finally the
Easter service was coming. At Pascha midnight a priest joyously
announced 3 times,”Khristos Voskrese!” And there was a response
“Voistinu Voskrese!”
